Dwayne Johnson revealed in a recorded message from Hawaii that a live-action reimagining of Disney Animation’s 2016 hit feature film “Moana” is in development. The announcement was shared by Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger during The Walt Disney Company’s Meeting of Shareholders Webcast.
The new feature film is produced by Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia via their Seven Bucks Productions and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. Executive producers include Auli‘i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the 2016 film, and Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co. Jared Bush and Samoan industry pro-Dana Ledoux Miller will also take part in the production. Bush, who was a director and co-writer of Disney’s Oscar®-winning feature “Encanto” and a writer and co-director of Disney’s Oscar®-winning film “Zootopia,” wrote the screenplay for 2016’s “Moana.”
Like its animated predecessor, the film will celebrate the islands, communities, and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path. Moana’s journey of self-discovery and reflection on the lives of her ancestors won hearts worldwide, as did her newfound friendship with an exiled demigod named Maui.
Johnson, who plans to return to the fictional world to set sail with Moana, said, “I’m deeply humbled and overcome with gratitude to bring the beautiful story of Moana to the live-action big screen. This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength.”
“I wear this culture proudly on my skin and in my soul, and this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by the mana and spirit of my late grandfather, High Chief Peter Maivia, runs very deep for me. I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavor because there is no better world for us to honor the story of our people, our passion, and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the core of who we are as Polynesian people.”
Native Hawaiian actor Cravalho, who helped shape Moana in the original film, said the beloved protagonist’s reach is sweeping. “She has had such a profound impact on how we think of Disney princesses,” Cravalho said. “Moana’s strength and perseverance are inspiring—to audiences around the world, to me, and to everyone who helped bring her to life. I’m looking forward to sharing her story in a whole new way.”
Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production (Disney Live Action), said the film would join a successful lineup of live-action adaptations that include 2017’s “Beauty and the Beast,” 2019’s “Aladdin” and the highly anticipated live-action version of “The Little Mermaid,” opening May 26. “It’s still early, but the idea of working with these fantastic partners to tell such a meaningful story on a live-action canvas, particularly as we celebrate 100 years of storytelling at Disney, is thrilling,” said Bailey.
Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Moana” debuted in theaters on Nov. 23, 2016, grossing nearly $644 million at the global box office. The title, which debuted on Disney+ with the streamer’s 2019 launch, is among the top 15 movies streamed in the United States in 2022. The film’s soundtrack, written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i, and Mark Mancina, was lauded worldwide.
Miranda won a GRAMMY® for best song written for visual media (“How Far I’ll Go”), and an Oscar® nomination for best achievement in music written for motion pictures – original song (“How Far I’ll Go”). In 2021, the “Moana” soundtrack broke a Billboard Soundtrack chart record for the amount of time spent at number one (52 weeks). Additionally, the film was nominated for an Academy Award (best-animated feature film of the year), a BAFTA (best-animated feature film), and a pair of Golden Globes® (best motion picture – animated and best original song (“How Far I’ll Go”)).
During ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball, the trailer for Marvel Studios’ espionage thriller “Secret Invasion” debuted and is now available. This original series is premiering June 21, exclusively on Disney+.
In Marvel Studios’ new series “Secret Invasion,” set in the present-day MCU, Nick Fury learns of a clandestine invasion of Earth by a faction of shapeshifting Skrulls. Fury joins his allies, including Everett Ross, Maria Hill, and the Skrull Talos, who have made a life for themselves on Earth. Together they race against time to thwart an imminent Skrull invasion and save humanity.
Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion” stars Samuel L. Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Martin Freeman, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Charlayne Woodard, Killian Scott, Samuel Adewunmi, Dermot Mulroney, Christopher McDonald, Katie Finneran, with Emilia Clarke and Olivia Colman, and Don Cheadle.
Ali Selim directs the series and executive-produces, along with fellow executive producers Kevin Feige, Jonathan Schwartz, Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Samuel L. Jackson, Ali Selim, Kyle Bradstreet, and Brian Tucker. Kyle Bradstreet is also the head writer, and Jennifer L. Booth, Allana Williams, and Brant Englestein serve as co-executive producers.
Happy Earth Month! What better time to talk about life-sized recycled elephant sculptures, plant-based treats, an inspiring new series, a 25th park anniversary and so much more? There is so much to share about how Disney celebrates throughout April, so let’s get started.
Disney is committed to taking meaningful action to support a healthier planet for future generations. By reducing the environmental footprint, investing in animal care and conservation, and telling stories that inspire action, Disney is continuing longstanding work to ensure that people, plants, and animals have a healthy place to call home. These collective efforts are known as Disney Planet Possible — tangible actions that put possibility into practice and inspire optimism for a brighter, more sustainable future for us all.
Celebrate 25 Years of Innovation & Conservation at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park
Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park will celebrate its 25th anniversary this Earth Day. Since it opened in 1998, this one-of-a-kind theme park has embraced the magic of nature by offering awe-inspiring animal encounters and thrilling attractions. Disney’s Animals, Science, and Environment team lead the way in providing best-in-class animal care, connects guests to nature, and engages in scientific programs focused on conserving wildlife in Disney’s backyard and beyond while inspiring all individuals to care for wildlife and wild places through everyday actions.
And since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has directed more than $120 million and the expertise of our dedicated teams to support organizations working with communities to save wildlife, inspire action, and protect the planet.
In April, there will be several new ways to join in the celebration of Earth Day and this milestone, including new sweet and savory treats, specialty merchandise, limited-time character sightings, and a National Geographic photo spot at the entrance of the park in celebration of the second season of “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” on Disney+.
At Disneyland Resort, guests can enjoy delicious dishes from Paradise Garden Grill’s new fully plant-based menu for the Disney California Adventure Food & Wine Festival, now until April 25. Kristen Kish from National Geographic’s Restaurants at the End of the World will also be stopping by the Festival for a cooking demonstration on April 22 and 23. In addition, Disneyland Resort cast members are sharing their love of Disney and the environment by designing unique works of art as part of the annual Environmental Art Challenge.
The art is created using waste found in cast members’ work areas ranging from park maps, plastic bottles, bubble wrap, and more. Guests can join in on the fun and vote on their favorite art piece at Stage 17 located in the patio area near the Super Store featuring Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure park.
We’re excited about what Disney is doing as we work towards a more sustainable future, and we remain committed to making a difference—not just during Earth Month, but year-round!

Since California has experienced tons of Rain this year, Knott’s is extending the Boysenberry Festival three additional weekends. Guests can enjoy the unique boysenberry-inspired food and wine festival daily, now through April 16, and every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, April 21-23, April 28-April 30, and May 5-7.
Also, National Boysenberry Day is On Monday, April 3, and Knott’s Berry Farm is celebrating National Boysenberry Day to commemorate its historical roots and the little berry that started it all, the boysenberry.
In 1932 Walter and Cordelia Knott put their stamp on the berry world by being the first to harvest the boysenberry successfully. The Knott family then began selling boysenberry jams, jellies, and preserves, and the popularity of their products later led to the birth of Knott’s Berry Farm.
Today all the boysenberries in the world can trace their roots back to Knott’s. To show love to the berry that placed our park on the map, Knotts invites guests to dress their “berry best” with formal, purple-themed outfits for National Boysenberry Day. During the event, guests are encouraged to dress in bowties, gloves, suits, or pin-up skirts.
Guests entering the park will receive a commemorative National Boysenberry Day button to mark the occasion. At 3 pm on the Calico Mine Stage, guests dressed in their berry best will have the opportunity to participate in the Berry Style Stroll to show off their festive outfits and be a part of the special group photo to honor this national holiday.
