Toy Story 4 Movie Review

The last time we joined Woody and the gang on the big screen, we were left with one of the most emotional and bittersweet endings of all time. Toy Story 3 had wrapped up a generation’s childhood with poise and perfection, leaving us all balling our eyes out with satisfaction and nostalgic daydreams of childhood. How can a studio bring out an encore for such an amazing film? Better yet, how can they possibly top it? When Toy Story 4 was announced, those questions definitely lingered, giving fans a lot to think about when going back into the beloved world of toys we’ve gotten so close to over the years.

Toy Story 4 doesn’t just meet the expectations set by the original three films, it soars beyond infinity and finds its way to the core of what makes the Toy Story franchise so special. From the very beginning in 1995, the Toy Story series has focused on the struggles of change and personal growth. Woody and his band of toys transport us all into a fun and entertaining space where we can discover what it truly means to evolve and grow beyond what we thought we were capable of.

D23 Merchandise
THREE-IN-ONE – He’s not a fork. He’s not a spoon. And most of all, Forky is not a toy! At least that’s what he thinks. Bonnie created him from an assortment of supplies Woody’s retrieved from the kindergarten trash can. So, it’s no wonder Forky feels strongly that he’s trash and not a toy. Featuring Tony Hale as the voice of Forky, Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

There is no more perfect example of this than Forky, a creation of Bonnie’s design and whimsy. Forky doesn’t believe he is a toy, and uses every fiber in his plastic and googly eyed body to find his way back to the trash he so strongly feels is his destiny. Yet, with the help of Woody, Forky will soon discover his true purpose, and be given the chance to unlock a whole new world of self discovery. Though, for some that may be skeptical, the film really isn’t about Forky at all and is more about including him in a larger narrative that begs us all to question: What are we truly meant for?

Forky has a incredibly hilarious innocence, and one that is the perfect pairing for Woody’s over the top personality. Together, they make a great team, and also act as a mirror into each other’s doubts and insecurities, something that is a lot more than you’d expect from a glorified piece of cafeteria utensil. In essence, Pixar took a huge gamble and as only Pixar can do, hit the jackpot in execution. Tony Hale nails his performance, giving everyone plenty of laughs and cheers along the way.

Still, Forky is just one piece of the puzzle, and ultimately, helps boost up the story that we’ve all been dying to see. After Toy Story 3, nobody knew what happened to Bo Peep, why Woody wasn’t able to save her, and why Andy wouldn’t have held onto her like his other toys. This alone gave Pixar the perfect toy box to play with in terms of story ideas, and it also gave Woody his greatest opportunity yet. When Woody finds Bo, his entire perception of what it means to be lost is turned upside down, and as you can see from the trailers, isn’t sure what to make of it. Bo has grown beyond the confines of a child’s bedroom, breaking through her original mold into a character all her own.

LOST AND FOUND – In Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Woody is reunited with his long-lost friend Bo Peep, who’s been on the road for years. She’s become an adventure-seeking free spirit whose strength and sarcasm belie her delicate porcelain exterior. Featuring the voice of Annie Potts as Bo Peep, “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

When we left Bo Peep in Toy Story 2, we had a love interest. That was about it, plain and simple. Now, with the help of a fantastic performance by Annie Potts, Bo is given her chance to shine, bringing Woody his latest and greatest challenge. She is fiercely independent, witty, and full of surprises. Bo retains her charm and chemistry, making her a fully rounded, lovable character. She also brings with her an opportunity for viewers to look beyond the expectations set in the original series, and without giving away any major spoilers, a real hard look at what it means to feel lost.

There are so many moments in life where we all feel down trodden, forgotten, or unsure of ourselves. Everyone has felt lost at some point, even if the world doesn’t fully recognize that vulnerability. Toy Story 4 shines a light on those moments, and whether you are young, or young at heart, it’s so reassuring to know that you’re not the only one. In perfect Pixar fashion, your heartstrings are pulled and you are left with something you can really relate to. It’s really what makes the film stand out beyond another animated feature, it gets right to the heart and stays with you until the very end.

D23 Merchandise
GABBY GABBY – In Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Woody finds himself in Second Chance Antiques, home to an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s and her crew of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Unfortunately for Gabby Gabby, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. Christina Hendricks lends her voice to Gabby Gabby. “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019…©2019 Disney•Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Even the film’s established villain, Gabby Gabby, has a lot more to say than a standard baddie. The film doesn’t create a black and white rubric for her to play off of, and instead, gives some depth and unique elements to really draw you into what makes her so menacing and fun. Christina Hendricks definitely deserves some praise for bringing Gabby Gabby to life. It’s the perfect mix of creepy and charming, which may include a hilarious nod to the horror classic, The Shining. Yet, rather than just be a creepy doll, Gabby Gabby has reasons behind her actions, her own struggles and doubts. It all showcases the reality that everyone has their hopes and fears. We all have obstacles, and it’s a challenge that must be met head on.

Toy Story 4 is exactly what it needs to be, a film that brings us all back to a level playing field, filled with the ups and downs of growing up. There’s laughter and charm, sadness and struggle, triumph and new beginnings. Everything about this film fits the fan base it was created for, and no matter what, it’s a place we can call home for infinity and beyond!

CLOSE QUARTERS – In Disney and Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” Bo Peep takes Woody to a secret hangout within the antique store—the inside of a vintage pinball machine—where a lot of toys go to socialize. Featuring Annie Potts and Tom Hanks as the voices of Bo and Woody, “Toy Story 4” opens in U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019. ©2019 Dinsey/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

The news, revealed at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, has given fans their first look at the latest Disney+ original series, “Chip ‘n’ Dale”.

The series is being developed by Disney’s London based animation team in collaboration with Xilam Animation in Paris. “Chip ‘n’ Dale” will have 39 seven minute episodes, each throwing back to a non-verbal style comedy, similar to what fans have seen in earlier iterations of the character’s classic shorts. The series will also have a similar look and feel to the new Mickey Mouse shorts, combining a traditional and contemporary style through the direction of Jean Cayrol and Marc du Pontavice.

Disney+ also received another reveal, as the streaming service shared a first look at the logo for the new original series, “Monsters at Work”. Set to debut in 2020, “Monsters at Work” will bring back the talented duo of Billy Crystal and John Goodman as Mike and Sulley.

The series will introduce a new character, Tylor Tuskmon, an eager and talented young mechanic that wants nothing more than make it to the Laugh Floor with his idols, Mike and Sulley. The series was developed and is executive produced by Disney animation veteran Bobs Gannaway (“Mickey Mouse Clubhouse,” “Planes: Fire & Rescue”) with Ferrell Barron (“Planes: Fire & Rescue”) serving as producer.

Disney+ will release to the general public this fall, with an onslaught of original content that includes original series, films, and more. Make sure to stay tuned for more as we get closer to the big debut!

Disney Launches “Protect the Pride” Campaign in Honor of “The Lion King”

THE LION KING - Featuring the voices of James Earl Jones as Mufasa, and JD McCrary as Young Simba, Disney’s “The Lion King” is directed by Jon Favreau. In theaters July 29, 2019...© 2019 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

To celebrate the upcoming release of Disney’s The Lion King, the Walt Disney Company is joining forces with the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Lion Recovery Fund to help fund a global conservation campaign to raise awareness for the crisis facing the lions and other wildlife across Africa.

Disney has donated more than 1.5 million in proceeds towards protecting and revitalizing lion populations and the habitats they need to thrive. Fans are also welcome to join in the effort and donate, together with the WCN, LRF, and their partners in raising funds. The overall goal is to raise $3 million.

Fans may participate by purchasing special-edition products and take part in celebratory experiences that will be part of The Lion King Protect the Pride campaign. “Disney is committed to supporting lion conservation efforts and we believe The Lion King is the perfect story to remind us of the role we each have in helping ensure a world where these majestic animals are treasured and protected,” said Elissa Margolis, senior vice president, Enterprise Social Responsibility for The Walt Disney Company. “Conservation has always been a core value of The Walt Disney Company and that commitment is apparent in everything from our films to our theme parks and is why we created the Disney Conservation Fund. Through the stories we tell and the experiences we create, we have the power to reach people around the world and inspire them to take action with us.”

The Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) has directed $75 million to save wildlife globally since 1995, including $13 million to protect African wildlife spanning more than 30 countries. The Lion King Protect the Pride donation will be DCF’s largest single contribution in its 24-year history, supporting WCN’s Lion Recovery Fund and their work to engage people in conservation solutions. The Lion Recovery Fund supports a variety of partner organizations working in Africa and employs a three-pronged approach to lion recovery: investing in conservation projects on the ground, developing campaigns that build support for the protection and revitalization of Africa’s lion populations, and expanding and strengthening collaborations, as no single entity will be able to solve this challenge alone.

As a kickoff to The Lion King Protect the Pride campaign, Disney and WCN convened more than 80 leading lion conservation experts this past May at the Lion Footprint Forum at Walt Disney World® Resort, the first meeting of its kind in 20 years, aimed at expanding collaboration to grow conservation impact. Participants from 18 countries and representing more than 50 organizations and foundations discussed challenges impacting lion populations across lion range countries and strategies to address them. Resulting ideas and project proposals will be considered for support through the LRF.

“The Lion Recovery Fund has a vision to bring lions back across Africa, and Disney’s powerful storytelling is a perfect way to get even more people aware of the lion crisis and inspired to take action,” said Charles Knowles, President and Co-Founder of Wildlife Conservation Network. “The Wildlife Conservation Network is proud to continue its longstanding collaboration with Disney to make a meaningful impact for people and wildlife across Africa.”

Help Protect the Pride

It takes many different approaches, which differ by regions, habitats, and local communities, to help protect lion populations. Fans can explore The Lion King Protect the Pride website to learn more about The Lion King Protect the Pride campaign and find ways that they can get involved, including:

  • This summer, take part in Protect the Pride lion-related Disney experiences celebrating WCN’s LRF, like the Kilimanjaro Safaris® Expedition at Disney’s Animal Kingdom® Theme Park in Florida during opening week of The Lion King film (July 19-25); purchase special-edition Simba and Nala plush lions available at certain Disney stores, on shopDisney.com, and in select U.S. Disney Parks and Resorts locations; Disney Theatrical Productions will celebrate with audiences on Broadway during the month of July, providing campaign information in Playbills® for The Lion King; learn about the history of Disney’s commitment to conservation in films and Disney Publishing Worldwide’s support of the campaign through The Art and Making of The Lion King book. LEGOLAND California Resort Celebrates 20th Birthday

Legoland is an entire theme park dedicated to LEGOS and the kids that love them (photo by Greg Aragon)

I never met a kid who didn’t love Legos. The toys are simple, durable and inspire creativity and imagination. So when LEGOLAND California opened in 1999 as an entire theme park dedicated to the little, plastic building blocks it was big news. And now today, as it celebrates its 20th birthday, the destination is more popular than ever and still welcoming families and exciting new attractions.

My family and I recently visited LEGOLAND to check out the new DUPLO Playtown area, the Sea Life Aquarium and a bunch of other cool rides and attractions. We also wanted to experience the park’s mystical Castle Hotel.

Out getaway began when we checked into a wizard’s themed room. The hotel, which opened in 2018, features 250 LEGO Castle themed rooms with your choice of Knights & Dragons, Royal Princess, or Magic Wizard.

The entire hotel is decorated just like a medieval castle and offers many surprises for kids. There are talking portraits and musical seats located throughout, the lobby has a giant “Lego pond,” and there is a new themed restaurant called Dragon’s Den Restaurant & Bar, where the hotel serves free breakfast for registered guests each morning.

All rooms come with a separate kids’ area with bunk beds and LEGO building tables, a treasure chest, and a scavenger hunt. They also boast a big TV, comfortable bed, coffee maker, refrigerator, free WiFi, and a large bathroom with shower and tub. Just outside the hotel is an Entertainment Courtyard with play zones for kids of all ages, and a pool area.

But the hotel’s best feature is its location next to LEGOLAND’s main entrance. This was a great feature, as we were able to have breakfast and then stroll into the park within five minutes.

Once in the park, we were transported into a magical world of Legos. With more than 60 rides, shows and attractions celebrating the iconic toys, the park is an interactive, hands-on experience for families with children 2 – 12. The Resort is also home to SEA LIFE Aquarium and the world’s first LEGOLAND Water Park.

Our first adventure at the park was NINJAG The Ride, where guests encounter 3D imagery, high-tech sensors as they use hand movements in a striking motion to master their skills before battling a villain called The Great Devourer. We began the ride by climbing in a 4-person car and putting on 3-D glasses. The lap bar senses hand movements, so kids can hurl fireballs, lightning, shockwaves and ice to help fight a host of menacing enemies on a 30-ft screen.

From here we entered MINILAND USA, where roughly 32.5 million Lego bricks have been turned into incredible mini-recreations of some of America’s most beloved locations. Highlights include the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, the capital building in Washington D.C., Mardi Gras in New Orleans, Grand Central Station in New York, the Las Vegas strip, and Griffith Park in Southern California.

MINILAND also now includes a Star Wars section, featuring a floating Death Star and seven different LEGO Star War scenes, made of more than 1.5 million LEGO bricks, featuring one scene from each of the movies.

Another fun attraction is Coastersaurus, a roller coaster that takes guests through a prehistoric jungle of LEGO brick dinosaurs. Riders circle around a 1,100-pound Brachiosaurus and whiz by a ten-foot-tall Parasaurolophus scavenging for food.

The park’s newest adventure is DUPLO Playtown, a colorful new LEGO town geared towards children five and under. The area features more than ten whimsical playhouses with hands-on activities, slides and interactive elements that encourage kids to use their imagination and creativity while playing. Children can explore a barn, fire station, grocery store, hospital and maze complete with an interactive scarecrow.

One of the most colorful new attractions is the SEA LIFE aquarium, a multi-level aquarium with over 350 different species and more than 6,000 real creatures swimming around in 16 different interactive zones. There are jellyfish, octopi, seahorses, sharks, rays, a hands-on touching pool, and lots more. SEA LIFE Aquarium admission is an extra $25 with a LEGOLAND ticket.

With summer around the corner, the LEGOLAND Water Park ($30. with a LEGOLAND ticket) is now open, with a myriad of thrilling waters rides and slides, rafts, pools, a lagoon, and more.

LEGOLAND California is located in Carlsbad, CA. For more information and current ticket prices, visit www.LEGOLAND.com or call 760.918.LEGO.
