Meanwhile, we get our first look at Hope’s new suit as the Wasp. Just like the character, it’s kickass, providing a powerful look that fits perfectly for the Marvel Universe. Imagine, if you will, you are seated in a dark movie theater about to watch the latest blockbuster on the big screen in your local cinema; however, you are about to experience it in a way you never thought possible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu4M5SL6Em4

At first glance, you may think this is just a theme park gimmick, but it can be much more than that. The special effects around the audience is designed to enhance the movie-going experience and not so much a distraction.  You can feel like a character in the movie world; feel the roar of King Kong, sail across the Caribbean, race inside a DeLorean time machine, fly the Millennium Falcon, survive an aircraft turbulence, or even tremble at the footsteps of an approaching dinosaur.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is the latest summer blockbuster to receive the 4DX treatment. The motion seats will not only vibrate, but it will roll left and right, heave up and down, and pitch back and forth.  For the premium experience, you can also get leg ticklers, back knockers, and air blasts by your head. Environmental effects will have air blasts to your face, water effects, sensory smells, falling snow, misty fog, gusts of wind, and strobe lights complete the immersive checklist.

4DX currently caters to two locations in Southern California.  The first in the United States is at L.A. LIVE and CGV Cinemas Buena Park.  The future is bright as it was announced at CineCon 2018, Regal Entertainment has agreed to open 4DX in 79 new U.S. locations including Irvine and San Diego. Pricing may vary, from $18-$30, with different levels of features at certain venues.

Jurassic World is a perfect example of the immersive power of 4DX, having a plethora of various elements and special effects in the film worth bringing experiencing first hand. If you would like to know what to expect from the 4DX experience, please continue to read.  If not, be warned, SPOILERS AHEAD. Below is a description of one of the film’s explosive volcanic sequences.

Environmental and motion effects you can anticipate includes misty rainfall, gusts of wind, vibrations from roars and footsteps, shattering earthquakes, aircraft turbulence, volcanic debris whizzing past your ears, rubble tumbles past your feet, strobe lights and seat vibration for electric tasers, rolling blanket of deadly fog gas, punching fists, powerful kicks, and blood splatter.  Yes, you read that last part correctly.

Though, there is one effect that may need some improvement. Part of the experience is scent sensory. When trying to imitate the smell of pinewood and lush foliage, the effect comes off with a smell of burnt plastic. Regardless, the overall experience is full of amazing features, worthy of giving 4DX a try. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is a good start.  You can follow 4DX on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/4dxusa/ and Instagram account @4DXusa

Evangeline Lily and the Power of The Wasp

With the upcoming release of Marvel Studios’ Ant-Man and the Wasp, Evangaline Lily had the opportunity to speak about her role, the true power of Hope, and her fascination with science. The full press conference is below, but please be warned, there are mild spoilers for the film. The article will not contain any spoilers, but the video may hint at some.

Rather than be a sequel to Ant-Man in the sense of Ant-Man 2, this film is just as much a Wasp origin story as it is another outing for Ant-Man. Paul Rudd, who reprises his role as Scott Lang, confirmed that the movie focuses on Hope Van Dyne’s strong abilities as well as their strength as a team unit. “One of the things I really like about this…it really is a duo and a team. We work together pretty well”, said Rudd.

Lily agreed, as she mentioned her pride in seeing Marvel give Van Dyne the opportunity to take charge. “It was just fun to finally get to see her take on the mantle. This is something she has been ready and willing to do her whole life…To actually seeing her fighting in that moment is wonderful”.

Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige, also went over the planning for the film, looking back at the idea and confirming it was the studio’s intention all along to bring Hope Van Dyne into the center of the spotlight. “The first Ant-Man film essentially is all about how qualified Hope is and her estrangement from her father which is preventing her from doing these things. It was without question in what would end up being the tag on the first Ant-Man Film that was in there from the beginning which was her finding that suit and saying ‘It’s about damn time’. We always knew what the next one was going to be: Ant-Man and the Wasp. It would finally be time for her to suit up and be the hero that she said earlier she was born to be.”

The focus of the entire press event revolved around that lead up, where things were left at the end of the first film, and how important it was that Van Dyne sets herself apart in a way that doesn’t treat her as a supporting damsel in distress. “I think Hope was born into this. It’s a family business. I think in the first one it was pretty clear she would be really good at this”, Rudd added.

Yet, Lily wasn’t the only one that had a chance to expand upon the importance of her character. Hannah John-Kamen, who plays the film’s central villain, made sure to note that there was more than meets the eye when looking at her role in the film. Rather than be a bad to the bone antagonist, Ava doesn’t see herself as the enemy. “It’s not black and white. It’s very grey. The villains are very redeemable because they are fun and we want to see them again”.

Lily again stepped forward and supported John-Kamen in her observations. When dealing with her own children, she knows how important it is to paint a more realistic and complex picture when dealing with the darker side of villainy rather than a simple and cliche approach. “There’s no such thing as a bad guy. There are only just good guys who have made so many bad choices they’ve forgotten how to make good choices and a true hero’s job is to remind them of their goodness…not to annihilate and to kill them but to help them redeem themselves”.

Marvel’s villains have been unique, and especially in the case of Thanos, there is a lot more than meets the eye. The complexity is something to be observed, and Lily wanted to make sure to express that when going in to see the new film. Maybe there is some good that needs to be salvaged to save the day. “To have redeemable villains, you’re teaching children that if you encounter somebody that might  have a different opinion than you, that doesn’t mean they’re a villain…If they have a different objective than you doesn’t mean you should attack them. Maybe you wanna try to understand them first.”

Ant-Man and the Wasp will release nationwide on July 6th. You can read our spoiler free review by clicking here!

The show features elements from all four Hogwarts Houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. The state of the art visuals are also accompanied by the iconic musical arrangements of John Williams and are conducted by William Ross. The show is a perfect way to end your magical journey, complete with fireworks and memorable sequences. A warm butterbeer is recommended for the best experience.

As the summer begins, the Wizarding World of Harry Potter will continue to wow guests with new offerings and additions. There will be new magic wand experiences, as young Witches and Wizards will be given the opportunity to master two new spells. The Incendio fire-making spell will conjure flames of varying size based on skill level, and the Alohomora spell will unlock a series of intricate locks that may reveal the fiery breath of a creature hidden behind a secret door. With the new installations, you are now given the opportunity to practice 15 different experiences, so don’t forget to bring your wand. If you haven’t had a chance to acquire a wand, Ollivander’s will be your first stop, making sure you have the opportunity to go through the world famous, Wand Selection Ceremony.

Once you master your magic skills, The Three Broomsticks will be featuring new fare on their lunch menu, which can be seen below:

Sunday Roast Sandwich: Served on a freshly baked baguette filled with warm prime rib, caramelized onions, English Cheddar, horseradish sauce and homemade garlic pickles served with fresh salad or potato wedges.

To bring the full wizarding experience together, travelers are now given the opportunity to add to their warddrobe by new additions at Gladrags Wizardwear. Two new pieces are now available for purchase, including Severus Snape’s iconic robe, as well as a replica of Hermione’s stunning Yule Ball gown from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The dress will be available in both adult and children’s sizes. Robes, scarves, and other Hogwarts apparel will be in stock, just in time for your next adventure in the wizarding world.

You can learn all about what’s coming next by visiting Universal Studios’ official site. Prepare yourselves for a summer full of fun and magic!

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP Movie Review

After the emotional whiplash of Avengers: Infinity War, Marvel fans deserve a respite from the intense drama and overwhelming uncertainty that was left for them to process. Ant-Man and the Wasp is just what the doctor ordered, providing a fresh dose of comedy and plenty of incredibly fun sequences that still manage to keep you asking questions about what comes next.

Ant-Man and the Wasp feels like a standalone film, bringing the world of Scott Lang center focus. After over ten years of easter eggs, hints, and Nick Fury filled connections to larger crossovers, this movie hones in on a more individualized narrative. The film follows Scott in the aftermath of his decision to fight alongside Steve Rogers in Captain America: Civil War. In a plea deal with the FBI, Scott goes under 2 years of house arrest, severely limiting his freedom and creating a strain on his ability to be the father he wants to be for his daughter, Cassie. All the while, Scott also has to come to terms with how his epic battle in Germany will affect the relationships he has with Hank Pym and his daughter, Hope. Given what we know from the first film, the stakes are all personal, and the key theme is family.

The same can be said for Hope and her father, Hank. This film gives us our first real look at their past, shedding the light on the tragic loss of Hope’s mother in the Quantum Realm. We also get to take a closer look at Hank and Hope’s relationship, growing beyond the antagonism that we started with in the first act. It’s a shift away from the constant worry of world ending stakes, and instead, creates a path for a fun side trip into what makes these characters so strong and relatable. Still, the film doesn’t turn into a sappy soap opera, as it still stays true to the Marvel formula of fast paced action. New York takes a back seat, since we are back in San Francisco, learning about a mysterious new villain that appears to phase in and out of the Quantum Realm. Played by Hannah John-Kamen, Ava is unique, hell bent on her own agenda and someone that will prove to be a worthy foe to Ant-Man and the rest of the gang.

Not surprisingly, the most entertaining part of the entire film is Hope. Evangeline Lily kicks some serious ass, being in total control and rolling with the punches as they come along. Hope’s arc is fantastically written, giving Lily the perfect opportunity to capitalize on every moment, bringing us to the edge of our seats while reminding you that she’s in charge. There is a reason this film has double billing, and Hope’s character does not let it go to waste. There is plenty to conquer, and Evangeline Lily does not disappoint. In that same thread, Paul Rudd also delivers a stellar performance, reminding us that there’s more to saving the world than super powers. Rudd is phenomenal, being just as hilarious as he is grounded in his role as Scott. Michael Douglass is just as charming and funny, reprising his role as Doctor Hank Pym. The entire supporting cast returns, including Michael Pena and Abby Ryder Fortson. Each of them do a wonderful job at keeping the fabric of the film together. As for Michelle Pfeiffer, fans are in for a fun treat, and for the sake of avoiding spoilers, all we can say is, it is great to have her on board and a part of the Marvel Universe.

Ant-Man and the Wasp is solid, providing the best of what Marvel can do without feeling like the same old story. There is still something new to bring to the table, and there is also plenty of laughter to come along for the ride. Don’t worry though, as there are some hints and details leading up to the connections to Infinity War. With the wounds of Thanos still fresh, it’s great to have a chance to smile again.

A Colorful Look at Pixar Pier’s Attractions and Entertainment

The world of Pixar Pier has been revealed, bringing in a wide assortment of fun entertainment offerings for fans to enjoy and take part in. From the new “Incredicoaster” to boardwalk games, to the Paint the Night Parade, there’s something for the whole family.

Right off the bat, let’s kick it into high gear and hop onto the “Incredicoaster”. Dedicated to the Incredibles, this coaster is filled with stunning visuals and unique twists and turns. Just as we stated in our coverage of opening weekend, this ride keeps the speed and daring spins of California Screamin’ in tact while creating a story based coaster with some real character. Check out the full ride through below, which also includes a walk through of the new queue. You will find descriptions of each character along with an entertaining preshow.

Make sure to look closely as you start the attraction, as you will get a good look at Edna and Jack-Jack. As you go through the ride, you will also get to see the entire family in action, but there are still some details that may be missed. The first being Dash’s surprise cameo at the beginning of the ride. As you are launching, look to the left, as you will see the water splashing at a high speed along the side of your car. This isn’t by accident, as Dash is moving so quickly, you only see the water trail he leaves behind. It’s a cool little touch that may be hard to see on your first outing. You can also find Jack-Jack multiplying towards the end of the coaster, taking over the entire building tops of Toy Story Mania! Make sure to pay close attention, as a lot of the special touches for each part of the coaster whip by in a flash. Once you are done, make sure to grab a snack at Jack-Jack’s Cookie Num Num’s, which you can read all about by checking out our food overview.

For fans of the original Boardwalk Games, a new twist can be found that brings new prizes and fun. Each game focuses on various Pixar characters from the films and shorts La Luna, Wall-E, A Bug’s Life, and Toy Story. The idea is simple, and the game mechanics stay the same as the original version; however, the prizes are brand new, bringing in a new challenge for those hardcore collectors. For the little ones, it also creates a fresh look that is easy to play along with.

A special look at some of the new prizes you can win at the Games of Pixar Pier!
A special look at some of the new prizes you can win at the Games of Pixar Pier!

The games are apart of the new Pixar Promenade, featuring character meet and greets, special dance parties, as well as musical performances. We had a chance to encounter Russell from Up and listen to the new band, The Pixarmonic Orchestra. This charming musical symphony performs various Pixar themed songs and jingles. Our favorite segment is the random segway into the Tripledent Gum commercial. The annoying jingle from Inside Out fits in perfectly and is good for a quick laugh. Pixar Promenade is just one of the special neighborhoods that can be found in the Pixar Pier.

When the sun goes down, the play continues in the Pier area as fans prepare for the Paint the Night Parade. To celebrate Pixar Pier, The Incredibles have joined the nighttime spectacular with their very own float. The sequence includes Mr. Incredible and Elastagirl at the forefront while Frozone, Jack-Jack, and Dash are also featured throughout the various elements of the float. Check it out for yourself below in this special first look from the float’s opening night.

The float is a spectacular addition to the parade, which we were able to get a closer look at in this exclusive behind the scenes video. Check out the amazing footage, showcasing the special effects and light elements that bring everything to life. The most impressive details come from Jack-Jack and Dash. Both are full of color and come together for a visually stunning presentation.

Don’t miss out on all the excitement! Pixar Pier is now open to guests and will continue to bring in new surprises within the coming months. Check out our full entertainment gallery below, showcasing more of the fun you’ll discover when you visit!
