Theatre Review – School of Rock The Musical

WHAT. A. SHOW.

School of Rock the Musical at Segerstrom Center of the Arts is a delightful and charming addition to this year’s Broadway lineup. School of Rock follows our protagonist Dewey Finn, a deadbeat guitarist who is kicked out of his own band, No Vacancy, thus destroying his chances of entering the Battle of the Bands. Without his band, he is also unable to pay the rent on his room he rents from his high school best friend and ex-bandmate, Ned Schneebly. Ned’s live-in girlfriend, Patty Di Marco, tired of Dewey taking advantage of them, tells Dewey that he needs to move out. Dewey intercepts a phone call from a nearby prep school calling for Ned to come be a substitute teacher. Desperate for money, Dewey pretends he is Ned, and accepts the position. It only takes a few minutes of being at Horace Green Prep School for Dewey to discover that he is completely in over his head, but a chance encounter with Principal Mullins’ music class sets his imagination ablaze.

Can this group of kids get him to the Battle of the Bands? Though reluctant at first to stray from the rigid coursework of their school, the children of Horace Green find a confidence in simply being heard and recognized by their new substitute, and excitedly become part of the band they soon name “School of Rock.” Getting them out of the school and to the Battle of the Bands proves to be quite a daunting task. Dewey uses his trouble-making charisma to attempt to charm the principal, Ms. Mullins into allowing him to take the children on a field trip to a concert for educational purposes. But do the kids get to the Battle of the Bands? Of course, they do! You’ll have to come see the show to find out how.

Rob Colletti (Dewey Finn) has amazing comedic timing. Perfect pauses, vocal inflection, and slapstick physical comedy made me laugh (pretty loud, sorry seat neighbors) quite a few times throughout the course of the show. He was great at being simultaneously warm and irritating. Our performance featured the understudy for Principal Mullins, Elysia Jordan, and all I can say is what a range! Her vocals were crisp, and just phenomenal.

It is important to recognize that any time a child is on stage playing an instrument, they are actually playing it. One of the stand outs for me was 12-year-old Vincent Molden (Zack). Molden has never even acted before prior to this tour. He is quite an accomplished guitarist and has fantastic stage presence. Though Iara Nemirovsky (Summer) played a character who could not sing, her vocals in the company were terrific. Her bossy attitude and precise delivery of lines were spot on for her role. She was a delight any time she was on stage. Grier Burke (Tomika) comes in with a presence beyond her years, backed by talent and experience.

Director Laurence Connor hopefully had as much fun directing this show as we had watching it. This cast has so much life and inherent chemistry, the blocking and gag timing were just impeccable. Like all new musicals, I personally waited to hear the music from this show live. I was honestly unsure what to expect from Andrew Lloyd Webber and the co-creator of music from Galavant and Tangled, Glenn Slater. How can you combine the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber with some of the funniest and enchanting lyrics in the last decade? School of Rock the Musical, apparently. I laughed so much and also felt heartache. It’s a fantastic soundtrack. For the most part, the costumes were simple, with the children being in their school uniforms for most of the show. However, they pull out all the stops with the glittery glam rock versions of their uniforms. Scenic and Costume designer Anna Louizos does an amazing job with the Battle of the Bands costumes especially. Louizos also fantastically translated Horace Green into a set that requires minimal changes which allows the characters to quickly move around the school without the need for blackouts.

Overall, I was completely charmed by this show and the cast. I would be lying if I said I was not listening to the soundtrack while writing this. It is just so good! Any seat is a good seat for this one. Don’t forget to grab some “Band Merch” in the lobby. If you are bringing kids, the School of Rock fidget spinner should be a huge hit. If you are coming sans kids, grab a beer and enjoy the rock show! You will not regret it.

School of Rock is performing until August 5, 2018 at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Visit the box office or call (714) 556-2787 for tickets.

All Warner Bros. Trailers from Comic Con 2018!

Every year, Comic-Con provides a days-long extravaganza of anticipation for all the film and television you’ll be champing at the bit to see for the next several months. Below are all the major Warner Bros. trailers that debuted at this year’s SDCC, including a very silly Shazam!, and just about everything in-between. Grab some popcorn and enjoy, keeping in mind all of those scattered premiere dates.

From Warner Bros. Pictures and director James Wan comes an action-packed adventure that spans the vast, visually breathtaking underwater world of the seven seas, “Aquaman,” starring Jason Momoa in the title role. The film reveals the origin story of half-human, half-Atlantean Arthur Curry and takes him on the journey of his lifetime—one that will not only force him to face who he really is, but to discover if he is worthy of who he was born to be…a king.

The film is set to hit theaters on December 21, 2018, in 3D and 2D and IMAX.

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).

A New Line Cinema production, “Shazam!” is set for release on April 5, 2019.

Following the global success of “Godzilla” and “Kong: Skull Island” comes the next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ cinematic MonsterVerse: “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” an epic action adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.

“Godzilla: King of the Monsters” hits theaters on May 31, 2019.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™.

At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings.

In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

Slated for release beginning November 16, 2018, the film will be distributed worldwide in 2D and 3D in select theatres and IMAX by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Mickey Mouse Receives Special 90th Birthday Portrait

Mickey Mouse was honored at San Diego Comic Con with a special portrait to commemorate the iconic character’s 90th birthday this year. The painting was revealed during D23’s “Celebrating 90 Years of Mickey Mouse” panel, and was created by legendary animator, Mark Henn.

The portrait is part of a long standing tradition between D23, the Walt Disney Archives, and the Walt Disney Animation Studios. The title of this year’s painting has been dubbed “Spreading Happiness Around the World,” and is one of many ways Mickey will be celebrated around the globe this ear. Henn follows in the footsteps of artists such as Disney Legend John Hench, who crafted five of Mickey’s official portraits.

“It is one of the great honors of my career to be asked to paint Mickey’s 90th birthday portrait,” says Henn. “I was greatly inspired by the portraits painted by John Hench. I wanted to capture some of the same style and sense of youth that John achieved in his portraits.” The painting will appear on the Fall 2018 cover of Disney twenty-three, the quarterly publication sent exclusively to Gold Members of D23.

The Her Universe Fashion Show Celebrates 5 Years of Geek Couture

Ashley Eckstein and Her Universe returned to the world’s biggest stage to celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Her Universe Fashion Show at San Diego Comic Con. The highly anticipated event honored multiple milestones, featuring series such as The Nightmare Before Christmas, The Powerpuff Girls, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Eckstein started the show with a heartwarming message about the goals of the event, as well as the importance of fandom in all of our lives. “Milestones should be celebrated. Behind every milestone is a story, a journey. At San Diego Comic Con, we celebrate our favorite shows, films, stories, characters and all these things represent so much more than just an interest or hobby. These powerful properties and the lessons they teach us have changed the way we live our lives. We’re all here because we have an emotional connection to our fandoms that fuel our need to create, collect, consume, and connect.”

In that spirit, models took to the runway, showcasing both Eckstein’s latest collection as well as custom designs painstakingly made by a handful of upcoming and aspiring designers. “Year five of the Her Universe Fashion Show represents countless journeys. Behind every designer and model is a story. Lives have been changed, life long friendships have been formed, and careers have been launched, ” Eckstein added in reference to the creative minds that came together for the show.

Fans rejoiced in the spectacle, being surprised and wowed throughout the evening. One of the biggest surprises came from Doctor Who’s Jodie Whittaker. Hooded and silent, she revealed herself after a dramatic entrance on the catwalk. Whittaker was met with thunderous applause and gasps from Eckstein herself.

When asked about her fashion choice as the Doctor, she honed in on making it universal and fully inclusive to all genders. “The main feature for me and the overriding sense of style have to be comfort”, Wittaker exclaimed. “We have the sky and we have space…I wanted to represent the sky I fell through and potentially the dawn of the new one which is me as the Thirteenth one.”

The Doctor wasn’t the only one making waves, as fans were also greeted by Matt Lanter and Dee Bradley Baker. In honor of the Star Wars: Clone Wars 10th Anniversary, the voice actors shared their reactions to the breaking news released at Comic Con earlier that day, which revealed the series would be returning with all new episodes exclusively for the upcoming Disney streaming service. “To have it back so incredible! I think it’s something that we’ve always dreamed of and wanted as fans and as performers on the show getting back together and doing it again”, said Lanter.

It was truly a night to remember, never ceasing to remind everyone to embrace their love of pop culture, to express their fandom, and to create something truly special. You can check out a full gallery of some of the amazing work below, which features some of the award winning elements of the night. The gallery also showcases Longefly’s latest fall collection, which was an official event sponsor.

You can learn more about the details of the Her Universe Fashion Show by checking out the official blog! A full video of the event was teased by Eckstein, will be made available at a future date. Make sure to stop by the Her Universe’s official site to see all the latest collections, which are now on sale in celebration of San Diego Comic Con.

Ready Player One Blu-Ray Review

Let the hunt begin!

Return to the Oasis with Ready Player One’s Blu-Ray/4K release, featuring exclusive behind the scenes looks, stunning visuals, and in depth interviews. The set boasts a 90 minute feature list, taking you on a 6 part journey through the making of the film. For the true film geek, it’s a wonderful adventure that will light the very fires of imagination. Each featurette is chalk full of detail, painting the reality of difficulty it was to bring the film to the big screen. It also sheds some light on the incredible technology used in building the virtual world.

Steven Spielberg took on the project with no previous knowledge of the story or the technology needed to make the film come together. With the Oasis, over 60 percent of the film was done in a digital space versus real functioning sets. Rather than leave the work to the special effects crew and hope for the best, Spielberg jumped right in, making sure he was directly involved with every step of the process. It’s a real testament to his faith in the film, but also to his directorial prowess.

For Ready Player One, pre rendered environments were created. The cast and crew had the opportunity to view the locations via VR headsets and real time monitors. As the filming commenced, Spielberg also had the chance to set up shots in a special editing tent, generating over 6500 unique cuts and angles. From a technical standpoint, it’s a marvelous achievement, allowing a more realistic portrayal in a purely digital space. It was a daunting undertaking, and safe to say, a widely huge success when you view the final product.

Here’s a look at the full features list!

  • Game Changer: Cracking the Code
  • Effects for a Brave New World
  • Level Up: Sound for the Future

  • High Score: Endgame
  • Ernie & Tye’s Excellent Adventure
  • The ’80’s: You’re The Inspiration

The nostalgia level is also in high gear. We get to ride in Cline’s DeLorean, take a closer look at the iconic Shining scene, and see the magic behind bringing back Alan Silvestri’s legendary score from Back to the Future. Having Silvestri return was a match made in heaven, giving a balance in score that retains the power of the past while melding into a unique and new sound that fits the film perfectly. With so many amazing easter eggs, nods, and references, it all comes together to create pure cinematic magic. For those who want the full scoop, you can read our full film review here.

You can find your copy of Ready Player One and discover more about the film by visiting Warner Bros’ official site. To mark the release of the film on Blu-Ray, Warner Bros. will also be hosting a special pop up challenge at this year’s San Diego Comic Con. Fans will get the opportunity to test their 80s Trivia, explore the Oasis, and visit a set piece recreation of Room 237 from The Shining. Admission will be free to all participants throughout the weekend of the convention. You can find out all the details by visiting www.readyplayeronechallenge.com.

A Boy and His Bear- A Quick Chat with Jim Cummings

Christopher Robin (Ewan McGregor) with his long time friend Winnie the Pooh in Disney’s live-action adventure CHRISTOPHER ROBIN.

Winnie the Pooh is floating off the page and into the real world this summer with the release of Disney’s upcoming picture, Christopher Robin. With the big debut only weeks away, we had the chance to catch up with legendary voice actor, Jim Cummings, who shared his experiences working on the film and his thoughts on bringing our favorite silly old bear to life.

Q: It’s so exciting to see you return as Pooh. Now that he’s in the real world, how was it approaching the character this time around? Did it feel any different or pose any new challenges?

“It did and it didn’t. I think the bond that Pooh and Christopher have was immediate. In Pooh’s world, he only sees the world through honey colored glasses. Seeing Christopher as an adult throws him a little bit, but he looks straight through and still sees Christopher Robin in there. It comes through beautifully and is quite touching. You get nostalgic and go ‘Oh Gosh! Has it been 40 years since he’s seen him?’ But boom, once they’re back, they’re back…It’s a boy and his bear…We are off to the races!”

Q: The film was a surprise, since fans did not know the film was going to be released until this year. When did Disney approach you about the project, was it planned behind the curtain for a while before being announced?

“It was peculating behind the scenes for a good while. They called me up and said, ‘Hey would you like to go meet with Marc Forster and Brigham Taylor’ and I said ‘My goodness yes!’ Marc is a true artist and he’s got a beautiful vision and he realizes it wonderfully. He tells the story and brings you right into the Hundred Acre Wood…He brings the Hundred Acre Wood right into you too. It’s a beautiful thing. Christopher gets back in touch with his inner self and his family, and his inner child. I can’t wait for people to see it.”

Q: Have you had a chance to see the finished film yet?

“I probably saw it at 75 percent. I haven’t seen it completely. I wasn’t cast as Tigger originally. They started showing focus groups and target audiences the film. It was such a difference, the people didn’t warm to the character the way they usually did. Chris O’Dowd is a fantastic actor. I think he’s great. People ask me about doing voices and I think what happens is you get a certain imprint in your head, if it it sounds like it it does, if it doesn’t it just doesn’t…Tigger sounded a certain way for almost 40 years, so it’s hard to bring it back in a different persona.”

Q: You’re so well known in the Disney community and have done so many voices over the years, what makes Pooh so special for you?

“I’ve always been a fan of Winnie the Pooh. The original ones in the 60s, I was still in the audience. When I think of certain Disney characters/projects like Davy Crockett, Zorro, or the Mickey Mouse Club and then Winnie the Pooh, it’s woven into Disneyana and is also woven into Americana. I think they are all threads out of the American experience. I think it’s a true honor to be associated, to be part of such a beautiful tradition…You can go to any country and you can say Winnie the Pooh and everyone will know what you’re talking about. It’s a universal feeling.”

Q: Are there any other characters in the film other than Pooh that you relate to?

“Definitely Tigger. I’m probably a cross between Pooh and Tigger. I’m a little laid back, but I gotta bounce.”

Q: With shows like DuckTales coming back in the spotlight, do you ever imagine what it would be like to see one of your classic shows return? What classic Disney Afternoon Character would you like to see come back?

“Definitely Darkwing Duck. That’s for sure. I’ve always had a soft spot for Don Karnage (Tale Spin). They brought Don Karnage back and nobody told me about that. They got someone else to come in and sing a song…That was weird. To not even be told was odd, I’m not sure how happy I am about that. It’s like someone taking your kid to the park and telling you to stay home. Darkwing it seems is one they are always ready to do a reboot for. It’s fine with me, I’m right here.”

Jim Cummings will return as Pooh in Disney’s Christoper Robin, which releases on August 3rd. Make sure to stay up to date on all the latest details, features, and video for the film, which can be seen by clicking here.

Disneyland Celebrates 63 Years with Style and Magic

Another year of magic and memories has begun as Mickey Mouse led 63 characters down the heart of the Disneyland Resort to celebrate the park’s 63rd anniversary. The milestone paid tribute to Walt Disney’s original dedication, the past, as well as the future of the park’s legacy.

Moving through the parade route, guests had the opportunity to wave, dance, and sing “Happy Birthday!”. Similar to previous year celebrations, the cavalcade started their journey on Main Street USA and made their way to It’s A Small World.
