SOLO: A Press Junket Story

“He’s reckless, cynical, doesn’t trust anybody, does things he shouldn’t do and is a little bit stupid.” Legendary writer Lawrence Kasdan described how he first saw Harrison Ford as Han Solo and being fascinated by his character while seeing him in the cantina in A NEW HOPE. That fascination carries over 41 years later for Kasdan, who co-wrote SOLO with his son, John. The love for Han, his legacy and the universe he exists in was shared amongst the panel during the press junket for SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.

Here’s a few tidbits that were shared:

  • Ron Howard felt honored to be able to direct a STAR WARS movie, saying that he told himself, “Ron, don’t f*** this up.” He knew the weight and importance of these films, and how gargantuan of a task taking on a film of this magnitude would be. He was happy to inherit an incredible crew, including cinematographer Bradford Young.
  • On finding the right role for his brother, Clint, Ron remarked “there was this great scene with L3 and it just sort of came up in conversation that L3 needed somebody to be pissed off at. And I said, ‘My brother!’”
  • Howard also praised the script the Kasdans wrote, and how well it handled each character’s impact on the younger, naive Solo. The screenplay also allowed him to focus on character beats, rather than wrapping his head around references to the larger Star Wars canon; he left that job to his technical advisors. Coming in to the movie, Howard said he “would treat this like it’s a true story” and worked off instinct to tell the story. He found it difficult at times to stage the big action sequences, but discovered that the set pieces were really about testing Han and furthering his character. In the end, that defined the way the action played out.
  • Howard, about halfway into the press junket, was also the first to mention previous directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller, noting that he took over after “creative differences created circumstances where they were not going to carry on.”
  • The father-son duo of Lawrence and John Kasdan were able to find a great working dynamic between them when writing the movie. John said he “shared a deep love with [Star Wars], and I came at it from a totally different [perspective]. I grew up playing with the toys, and that with me as a fan, and [Lawrence] as an older Jedi master, we could figure out some sort of dynamic where the story felt contemporary and true to the spirit of Solo.”
  • The Kasdans tried to approach the movie in terms of “is there a genre movie – a crime movie, a western – that we could fit Han Solo into?” The younger Kasdan wanted to plug Han into the kind of story they wanted to see. “At its base, it’s trying to be its best version of a western,” John remarked.
(L to R) Lawrence Kasdan, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Woody Harrelson, Donald Glover, and Alden Ehrenreich.
  • Inheriting the role of Han Solo, Alden Ehrenreich found it “wild and exciting to step into the Millennium Falcon.” Early on into his process, he watched the original Star Wars trilogy to absorb Solo’s character and view of the world. Harrison Ford even gave him some pointers during a meeting, and also surprised Alden the morning of the press junket during an interview. Ehrenreich was so happy that his predecessor was extremely effusive and supportive of the movie.
  • Fresh off an SNL hosting gig and the release of a controversial, yet important music video, Donald Glover dons the cape that Billy Dee Williams wore before him as Lando Calrissian. Glover said that Star Wars feels like the bible to him, as he had toys of Land and Darth Vader, amongst others when he was younger. “When I heard they were making these, I told my agent, ‘If they’re making anything with Lando in it, I have to be Lando.’ And he was like: ‘I hear you. I don’t like your odds.’ That was exactly what I needed to hear. I really auditioned like it was the only role I wanted in the world. It really was,” Glover said. Don’t ever tell Glover the odds, as he beat them handily to nab the role of young Lando.
  • Joonas Suotamo plays the lovable Chewbacca, and felt honored to carry on the legacy of Peter Mayhew. This role was a life changer for him, and was very thankful of getting to step into this franchise. He joked, “[for Chewie bootcamp,] tickets were sold out, but I was lucky to squeeze in,” as he let out a classic Chewie yell to the delight of everyone in the crowd.
  • SOLO contains many familiar characters, but also introduces a few new characters into the universe, including Woody Harrelson’s Tobias Beckett. Woody was attracted to the project because of how well written Beckett is, and was overjoyed at the chance to be in a Star Wars movie.
  • Emilia Clarke found her character very exciting, but expressed that it was sometimes difficult to play mysterious. In the end, she loved playing the enigmatic Qi’ra, the love interest to Han and a new character created for this movie.
(L to R) Emilia Clarke, Joonas Suotamo, and Paul Bettany.
  • Playing the nasty villain, Dryden Vos, was a pleasure for Paul Bettany. He found it very fun to play bad, and was eager to be in the Star Wars universe, going so far as to text Ron Howard to find him a role. Bettany compared his role as Vision in the Avengers movies as being a fundamentally good character, while Dryden Vos is viciously bad.
  • Thandie Newton, who plays Val, a member of the crew Han joins, reminisced about the fun times filming, as well as the size of the sets and scope of the movie. She told a story about how her son’s first interactions with the Star Wars universe was him blabbering back and forth with R2-D2 on set. “This is the stuff dreams are made of.”
  • Phoebe Waller-Bridge did motion capture and voiced L3-37, Lando’s droid companion. She says that L3 is “a self-made droid, so she created herself out of other droids, which is kind of frightening when you put it like that.” L3 is also upbeat, independent and inspirational to Waller-Bridge (who was also responsible for one of the funniest lines of the movie).

The last remarks of the morning put the movie into a more relevant perspective. John Kasdan stated that “Star Wars… has been a classic story of the dark and the light, the good and the evil. And we saw this as an opportunity… to make it so every character had some ambiguity to them, and everyone was after their own particular end.” He hopes that the world we live in now is reflected in their art, and they tried to be faithful to what they think is appropriate for today and how the perception of Han would evolve through time. He went on, saying “Han is centrally conflicted, at his core, there is conflict and it’s beautifully laid out in A NEW HOPE between his ideals and his desires.”

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY, starring Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke and Paul Bettany, and directed by Ron Howard, opens on May 25 nationwide.

An In Depth Look at the Costumes of Black Panther

This week, Marvel is celebrating the release of Black Panther on Blu-Ray/4K with an inspirational talk with costume designer Ruth E. Carter, going in depth about her journey at creating the iconic outfits for the film.

Going into detail, Carter spoke about her research and concepts for T’Challa’s iconic hero suit. It had to reflect the power of vibranium as well as a mix of African patterns and textures to get the right feel for the Black Panther.

Marvel Studios’ BLACK PANTHER..Black Panther Conceptual Character and Costume Design Sketch..Costume Design and Art: Ryan Meinderding and VisDev Team..©Marvel Studios 2018

“Nowadays, every superhero suit seems to have a small pattern that creates a texture on their suit, so I was excited that there was an opportunity for me to include a surface treatment to Black Panther’s suit. Within the design, you can see some veining of a Wakandan language that circles around the suit – but I put a small triangle in between the line-work. I call it the Okavango pattern. The Okavango print, in combination with the veining, helps the piece feel like the roller prints you see in so many African patterns and printed fabric. Now, he’s not only a superhero, but he’s also an African king.”

For T’Challa’s sister, Shuri, Carter and her team took a different approach. One that was more modern and less tied to tradition. “She is bored with tradition. She designs the new Black Panther suit and she’s the head of the Wakandan Design Group, so I knew it was important that we really try and think outside the box for the character.” Carter was able to reflect on the script and character, coming out with the right look needed to fit the progressive head of Wakandan’s technological infrastructure.

“When we see Shuri at the airstrip, she talks to her brother and he teases her about having to wear a traditional costume at Warrior Falls. Then, when we see her at Warrior Falls, she says, “Can you hurry up, people? This is very uncomfortable.” I feel like that [dialogue] allows audiences to understand the character. She’s saying, ‘I know I am a princess and I know there’s a place for tradition, but I’m moving on from that.’

A lot of thought and effort went into the characterization and personality each piece needed to bring out the best in performance for the actors and story. That definitely comes to light when Carter discusses the work done for the strong and powerful warriors of the Dora Milaje. “I made the reds and the oranges really vibrant because we only have a few members of the Dora Milaje in the film. In total, I think there were only eight – but I wanted the eight Dora Milaje to feel like 10 or 20 women.”

With the mixture of prominent color and bead work, the finished product created the level of ferocity Carter was looking for. Still, that layer of culture and honorable tradition was kept in mind. “Overall, I wanted the costume to look like something that would be passed on or handed down. I wanted there to be this feeling that it would be given to you with such pride and such ornate handiwork of Africa that it was a privilege and an honor to receive the uniform.”

There were a lot of great elements put into the costume work for the film, and other concepts can be seen below. Every piece of fabric, dye, bead work, and stitch was put in with intricate detail and meaning.

Black Panther: Blu-Ray Review

“Wakanda Forever!”

The record shattering, awe inspiring, and revolutionary, Black Panther, has made the journey home with a Blu-Ray/Digital and 4K Ultra HD release. From start to finish, the set packs a punch with up close looks at story development, cultural inspirations, and the evolution of Black Panther from the early comic book panels to a full feature in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios’ BLACK PANTHER

In the feature, “From Page to Screen”, director Ryan Coogler, sat down in a round table discussion with some of the thinkers and storytellers behind Black Panther both in the world of Marvel Comics and film. Coogler and company weaved together the timeline from Black Panther’s earliest days as a beacon of strength during the Civil Rights movement and how his character has evolved into a powerful symbol, tearing down boundaries of story and characterization that have inspired the world over for decades. The history of the character alone is fascinating. For those who may be newer to the Marvel Universe, this is a great way to fill in any gaps and learn what impact the character has in the larger world of comics and pop culture.

Another interesting aspect to take away from the discussion is the risk involved at bringing Black Panther into the MCU. Though in hindsight, he may seem essential and an unquestioned part of the franchise, the round table discussed the challenges at introducing T’Challa to the world in a way that would test the waters for what was to come. Being brought into the fray during the hit, Captain America: Civil War, Coogler and company could not have anticipated the fan reaction, and as we now know, the gamble paid off in a way nobody could have imagined. Yet, along with the man and the iconic story, other elements stand out, including the powerful women and warriors brought to life on screen.

Grace and ferocity reign, and “The Warriors Within” feature brings that front and center. A small preview can be seen above, but the set gives the well deserved tribute to all the hard work and dedication each actress brought in creating an inspirational glimpse into the importance of female leadership.

They are at the forefront of the entire narrative, as warriors, advisors, and powerful leaders for the world around them. Black Panther takes every advantage, creating role models and new faces for viewers to look up to. There is no damsel in distress to be seen, shattering conventional gender stereotypes. That’s incredibly vital, as young women need more strong characters to relate to, more versatile roles to see themselves in. It’s a key part of this set, and one that is definitely worthwhile.

Going beyond gender, the inclusion of so many elements of African culture and tradition really took the world by storm when the film hit theaters. The set does not disappoint, as we get a full look at the production’s research on locations, cultural heritage, fashion, and ways of life. Though Wakanda is a place of marvelous advancements in technology and innovation, the featurettes guide us along the path taken to meld a world of future and fantasy with a world deeply rooted in ethnic diversity and culture.

It was important for the crew to keep those two contrasts in sync, and as fun as it is to see what makes Vibranium so powerful, effects used to create awesome technology, and props that represent the impossible, it is just as entertaining to see the level of effort that went into fine tuning the elements used to reflect a truly real and prominent African culture. There is plenty of content worth your time that will make the world of Black Panther feel a little bit closer to home.

‘HAMILTON’ Review – IT’S HERE!

Hamilton Joseph Morales and Nik Walker will lead the second national tour of Hamilton as Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr, respectively. Other principal roles in Hamilton will be played by Ta'Rea Campbell as Angelica Schuyler; Marcus Choi as George Washington; Elijah Malcomb as John Laurens/Phillip Schuyler; Shoba Narayan as Eliza Hamilton; Fergie L. Philippe as Hercules Mulligan/James Madison; Kyle Scatliffe as Marquis de Lafayette/Thomas Jefferson; Danielle Sostre as Peggy Schuyler/Maria Reynolds and Jon Patrick Walker as King George. The second national tour also includes Tia Altinay, Amber Ardolino, Conroe Brooks, Cameron Burke, Evan S. Cochran, Phil Colgan, Desmond Sean Eillington, Hope Endrenyi, Lili Froehlich, Daniel Gaymon, Camden Gonzales, Jennie Harney, Stephen Hernandez, Kristen Hoagland, Abby Jaros, Emily Jenda, Wonza Johnson, King David Jones, Carina-Kay Louchiey, Brandt Martinez, Taeko McCarroll, Tyler McKenzie, Justice Moore, Antuan Magic Raimone, Julian Ramos, Jen Sese, Willie Smith III, and Julius Thomas III.

You are undoubtedly already aware of the much celebrated and successful musical, HAMILTON. In fact, you’re probably already aware of its hiphop roots from famed composer and lyricists Lin-Manuel Miranda. However, If you aren’t already familiarized yourself with In The Heights or the music coming out of this instrumental, Broadway-changing show, then now is the time to hear it. HAMILTON has arrived in Costa Mesa at Segerstrom Center for the Arts and there are no more excuses to miss it! Not only does Lin-Manuel’s lyrical harmonies inspire us to improve upon our current political climate, but it also motivates our nation to improve inclusion.

HAMILTON raps and rhymes its way through its entire, nearly 3-hour long, running time (intermission included) and never skips a beat. There is no lag, no slowness. The shows opens with its strong preface, “Alexander Hamilton”, and is quickly followed by a chain of already incredibly popular numbers including the “Arron Burr, Sir” introduction that leads to the infamous “My Shot” epic crescendo. By song number 4 the audience already feels they are deeply engulfed in this world.

The audience, already bobbing their heads to hiphop beats are introduced to “The Schuyler Sisters” with a mash-able mix of late ‘80s rap and early ‘90s guitar riffs with the beautiful soft voices of Eliza, Angelica… and Peggy. Songs will continue through a dynamic range of styles firmly based around story-filled lyrics providing a history lesson like no other.

Boy do I ever wish I had this type of entertainment as a child. I think I would have learned, if not at least be more interested in American history. But, HAMILTON is not about the history we have alway been told. Instead, Lin-Manuel Miranda’s story focuses around a founding forefather that is never talked about, unless you’re counting a Got Milk commercial from the 90s.

There is no missing a word in HAMILTON. These rap-based poetic songs and the more musically grounded numbers will have your ears perked up like never before. Telling its story through rhythmic rhyming and catchy tunes, HAMILTON will have you intently listening to every word that rolls off the tongues of these talented individuals.

Joseph Morales plays Alexander Hamilton and is straight from the original Chicago HAMILTON company. Morales perfectly resembles Lin-Manuel’s original performance without feeling like he’s just an imitation. Marcus Choi plays a strong George Washington and makes a perfect MC during the shows rap battles. The Schuyler sisters had perfect vocal range. But when it all comes down to it, two people steal the show. Kyle Scatliffe played the roles of Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in our performance, and was just… EVERYTHING. Flamboyantly perfect as both. He would make for an excellent Lola in Kinky Boots. The other showstopper and deserving of his own ovation would be King George himself. With only a few numbers, Jon Patrick Walkers portrayal was unforgettable and hilarious. I could see a one-man show with Walkers.

There are countless other mentionable performances, but I would rather emphasize all players were as good as anyone could ask for. All extremely talented, fitting their part well and matching perfectly to the Broadway cast recordings that I assume many have already listened to countless times. Those who know the music and attend should feel fortunate just to be in the presence of such a momentous and important show.

This isn’t a show that has gained popularity just because it has great music or stellar performances, but rather because of the story it tells. A forgotten story told in such a uniquely original way that allows the audience to forget the ethnicities that are purposely different than their non-fictional counterpart. The purpose is to perhaps not forget that Hamilton is played by Puerto Rican, Thomas Jefferson is played by a black man, or that George Washington is Asian; instead that these immigrants are just as vital to the creation of our nation as our white founding forefathers. Above all else, breaking down these barriers and the removal of the “big wigs” allows the story to feel more relatable, even more palatable.

HAMILTON encourages positive change and reminds us to re-tell the important stories from our past to ultimately help us understand where we came from and how we can move toward a better tomorrow. Oh, and the stage is cool too.

Despite popular belief, at the time I am writing this, there are still some select seats available through Segerstrom! For more info, visit scfta.org.

Cooking For Mom on Mother’s Day Celebrity Chef Shares Recipe

Taking mom out for brunch or dinner is a traditional way to celebrate her on Mother’s Day. But there’s another way that incorporates food, and it can be fun for the family as well as food for thought for the kids.

In other words, when you involve the children in the meal preparation on Mother’s Day, it might lead to a lifelong interest in cooking. The idea, says a chef to the celebrities, is to ingrain healthy nutritional habits and other life skills through involving the kids more in the kitchen.

“Giving mom a nice day by preparing a tasty recipe, and the kids having fun doing it, is a great gift for both the children and mother,” says Zipora Einav (www.chefzipora.com), author of Recipe for a Delicious Life. “It may even mark the beginning of an interest in cooking, along with all the benefits of learning to eat healthy and do things for others.

“It’s helpful to their self-sufficiency and self-confidence. They’ll become well-versed in how to help their future family eat healthy and have fun making meals together, because the heart of a family is in the kitchen. And a lot of families are so busy these days, they don’t spend enough time in there together or at the kitchen table.”

Chef Zipora offers a tasty recipe for Mother’s Day that the kids can have fun preparing and serving.

During Pixar Fest, guests will encounter beloved Pixar characters and stories in new and exciting ways at Disneyland Park, Disney California Adventure Park, the Downtown Disney District and the Disneyland Resort hotels. With so much to see and do during this limited-time celebration, here are 12 experiences for any must-do list.

  • Experience “Together Forever—A Pixar Nighttime Spectacular” from multiple Disneyland Park locations: This new multimedia fireworks show immerses guests into a story of friendship featuring your favorite Pixar characters with the use of projection mapping on iconic locations including Sleeping Beauty Castle, the water screens of the Rivers of America, the façade of “it’s a small world” and the buildings of Main Street, U.S.A.

  • Be dazzled by the “Paint the Night” parade: The nighttime parade with more than 1 million brilliant lights returns, this time making its way through Disney California Adventure. Becoming even more super in June, “Paint the Night” adds a new float inspired by “The Incredibles” and “Incredibles 2.”
  • Check out what’s new in the “Pixar Play Parade”: For the first time, “Pixar Play Parade” makes its way through Disneyland Park. This interactive, daytime parade gets even more playful with three new story elements featuring the iconic Pixar Lamp and Ball from the original Pixar short, “Luxo Jr.,” and characters from “Up,” and “Inside Out.”

  • Dine at Alien Pizza Planet: Everyone’s favorite green Space Aliens have invaded Disneyland Resort and transformed Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port at Disneyland Park into Alien Pizza Planet. Inspired by the family restaurant frequented by Andy (and his toys) in “Toy Story,” the restaurant serves a few new pizzas and other creatively themed menu items.
  • Take a ride on Pixar attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure: For 20 years, Disney Parks and Pixar Animation Studios have collaborated on attractions and experiences inspired by the colorful worlds of Pixar films. Guests at the Disneyland Resort now enjoy more than a dozen experiences that immerse them in the worlds of some favorite Pixar stories, including Toy Story Mania! and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage.
  • Taste Pixar-inspired eats and treats: Guests will discover creatively themed food and beverage offerings around every corner, inspired by Pixar stories and characters. Among the many fun food items are a “Monsters, Inc.”-themed chilled noodle salad at Lucky Fortune Cookery (with noodles that change colors!), a “Ratatouille”-inspired three course dinner at Café Orleans, and new churro flavors, including the “Coco”-inspired Coco Churro (Frontierland churro cart) and the “Up”-inspired multi-colored fruity churro with lemon sugar (Main Street, U.S.A. churro cart).
  • See which Pixar friends you can find on the Disneyland Monorail: During Pixar Fest, the monorail fleet gets a new look with characters from “The Incredibles” and “Finding Nemo.” This highway in the sky offers transportation to Downtown Disney with aerial views of the theme parks while on the 2.5-mile route.
  • Enjoy Pixar delights in Downtown Disney: Pixar fun expands to Downtown Disney with colorful Pixar-inspired topiaries in six different locations, plus a variety of Pixar-themed treats at Marceline’s Confectionery.
  • Meet some of your favorite Pixar pals: Guests may meet some of their favorite Pixar pals at Paradise Gardens in Disney California Adventure, such as Buzz Lightyear and Woody, Russell and Dug, Flik and Atta, Mike and Sulley, and Mr. and Mrs. Incredible.

  • Dance and sing along to live Pixar musical performances: Disneyland Resort musicians also celebrate the theme of friendship with renditions of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”from “Toy Story” in both parks. In Disney California Adventure, a zany, new seven-piece band, TripleDent Gum presents The Pixarmonic Orchestra, performs a fun-filled repertoire of songs from Pixar films.
  • Draw favorite Pixar characters at Animation Academy: In Disney California Adventure, guests will learn to draw their favorite Pixar characters such as Sulley, Dug, Edna Mode, Jack-Jack, Bing Bong and more with the artists at Animation Academy. Drawing classes typically occur every 30 minutes and guests may take home their art as a souvenir.
  • Exchange tokens of friendship: Guests may celebrate their own friendships with Pixar-themed friendship items, such as the “Finding Nemo” and “Finding Dory” souvenir light-up sippers and Pixar Fest friendship bracelets, available at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure.
