Powerful themes and emotions were shared at the California Science Center in Los Angeles during a special Blu-Ray release event for the hit film, Wonder. Leading the discussion was Emiliana R. Simon-Thomas, director of Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.
Simon-Thomas tied in pivotal scenes from the film, discussing the positive trends towards kindness and generosity and how they exemplify those principles in a very moving discussion that impressed the audience as well as the director of the film, Stephen Chbosky. “Our behavior tends to be in the realm of kind, generous, and cooperative. That’s really what the Wonder film was trying to tap into and demonstrate”, stated Simon-Thomas.
In her studies, those levels of kindness and generosity are found to be a huge factor in the overall happiness of an individual. In multiple studies ranging from children to young adults, findings leaned towards the positive reinforcement of quick action towards selflessness. Teamwork, friendship, and social bonds were also discussed, as friendship is a huge theme in the film through Auggie’s search for common ground with children his own age.
Wonder director, Stephen Chbosky, related directly to her discussion of kindness and ultimately the importance of finding your place in a world where you might not always feel you belong. Not a stranger to the narrative power of emotions and self discovery, Chbosky comes from a strong background of relatable themes and characters with his critically acclaimed novel and film, Perks of Being a Wallflower, in addition to his work for the live action adaptation of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. When focusing on Wonder, Chbosky believes Auggie is perfect representation for those universal themes.
“This movie is probably the purist expression of that. Whether in my career you are talking about Charlie, Beast, or Auggie Pullman, all three heroes for various reasons don’t feel they fit in the norm of their surroundings and society”. He went on to explain what stands out in these characters is how their experiences help them find their own individual humanity. Though each story is unique, each character’s growth brings them closer to the world around them and altogether transforms the world around them. It’s the human connection and need for kindness that breaks down the barriers that many can relate to.
The entire cast was said to bring in their own stories and experiences to help bring Wonder to life, creating a gripping, realistic, and inspiring story that is worth telling. Auggie’s sister, Via, played by Izabela Vidovic, was a great example of that.
Having struggles of her own, Via still finds a way to reach out and push her brother to be the best that he can be. That bond, sense of friendship, allows her to put him first and support him in a way vital to his self discovery. “She’s very frank with him because she loves him and she wants to be realistic with him. She wants him to understand that not everyone’s going to treat him the way he should be treated and I think that’s very important”, said Vidovic.
Vidovic‘s own background gravitates towards positive examples of inner strength and kindness. At 17, she has produced two of her own film projects, has her own philanthropic foundation, Passion for Compassion, and is a strong supporter of making the community more aware of some of the issues brought to the light in the film. Working together with myFace and the Children’s Craniofacial Association, Vidovic wants to make sure important causes like craniofacial disorders and bullying have an accessible platform.
“However you want to make a difference, you can”, Vidovic urged. “Go online, research. There are so many great organizations out there.”
Beyond the cast, so many people came together to help bring Auggie’s story to life. One of the biggest players was Arjen Tuiten, who created and designed the practical makeup used in the film for Auggie. “This is the first time in film history, to my knowledge, where a 9 year old has been in full prosthetics as a lead” Tuiten explained.
The makeup consisted of 4 part mold. 40 prosthetics were made to be used during the production, which included a very intricate design that was heavily researched and drawn on real medical records, personal accounts, and visits from children experiencing the same struggles and condition as Auggie.
“Normally on a make up of this type…you’re looking at three and a half hours,” Tuiten said. However, due to the production’s needs and time restraints, the crew was able to do the work each day in half the time while still keeping the balance between actor and effects in check.
“If the make up became distracting, the movie wasn’t going to work. It had to be a real boy, a real actor”. Tuiten and the crew helped make that reality come to light in a monumental way. Wonder has received an Oscar nomination for that work, which will be featured against other major features such as Gary Oldman’s The Darkest Hour.
All aspects of this film were done with the upmost care and respect by all involved. For those who haven’t yet seen the film, Wonder is now on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD.

As guests navigate past the ticket booth, through the flourishing outdoor garden and into the theatre queue, they will encounter a series of 36 movie posters that pay homage to DreamWorks Animation films. Within the lobby, a selection of over 20 award statuettes will be on display, representing a sampling of the Golden Globe, Emmy, People’s Choice, Critic’s Choice, National Board of Review and Annie awards DreamWorks Animation has amassed from 2008 to 2015. A collection of original sculpted maquettes of the “Kung Fu Panda: The Emperor’s Quest” characters will also be on display along with artifacts embodying magical powers that Po brought back from the Spirit Realm.

There come points in time in life where all-star casts are assembled for movies that garner much deserved attention. Movies like, The Godfather, Inception, Pulp Fiction, Lord of the Rings, Saving Private Ryan and many more have had people seething to see it and let the world know about it. Films like Django that bring so much buzz from promotional photos to trailers, people are counting down the days until it is officially released or just its premiere. Moments like this seem to happen and each time the bar is raised higher and higher. The same can be said with Marvel Studios newest film Black Panther.
However this time the buzz was centered on not just the films titular character, played by Chadwick Boseman but its supporting cast of strong women. Women that include Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong’o who plays Nakia the ex-girlfriend of T’Challa, Oscar-nominee Angela Bassett who portrays T’Challa’s mother Rowanda, Danai Gurira is Okoye and Letitia Wright who plays Shuri, T’Challa’s younger sister, who is the creator of the majority of updated technology and weapons within Wakanda. This buzz continued well after the highly praised and reviewed premiere into the film’s Global Press Junket on January 30th in Beverly Hills.
All of the stars of the film including director Ryan Coogler and Marvel Studios President and Producer, Kevin Feige were in attendance. The Conversation to the cast focused primarily on is powerful female characters. When asked how proud she was to look at the screen and seeing herself and the other women so powerful, beautiful and regal on screen, Angela Bassett who portrays the Queen Mother, Rawonda said,
“I was so pleased at this story and how it was supported.” Bassett went on to say, “In African culture they feel there is no king without a queen. I feel this story it highlights the queen, the warrior, the general and the younger sister.”
Nyong’o (Lupita) who plays the love interest and ex-girlfriend to the king was asked about her feelings during the premiere and what was going through her mind when the lights went down in the theater and she knew she was about to experience Black Panther. Lupita says, “I’ve been waiting a long time for this. This was a movie that we all felt a lot of ownership. When you make a movie like this and of this scale so much happens between the time you film it until you see it.”
Danai Gurira, who plays the general of the ALL WOMEN ELITE GUARD to the king, the Dora Milaje (which translated means “The Adored Ones”) spoke to her experience and shaving her head.
“Ryan (Coogler) sat me down and talked to me about the vision of the characters, and I was floored.” On the idea of the Dora Milaje, the idea of these women was amazing, the concept of them.” Gurira went on to talk about being bald, “on the first day there was a shock…then there was a level of pride amongst the women portraying the Dora Milaje a pride around it.”
Strength and power seen of these women is carried over to who is arguably the shining star of the film Letitia Wright. Wright, who plays T’Challs’s younger sister, is a genius but also still a teenager. With so many snaps and comebacks, Wright’s character keeps the cast surrounding her on their toes and brings a lot of laughs along with her. She was asked what her favorite weapon or gadget she began by joking “I created all of them.”
The women of Black Panther take center stage for everyone to see, when the film is released in theaters on February 16th.
The irresistible, the titillating, the absolutely SENSATIONAL Broadway smash hit that is KINKY BOOTS has runway-walked itself back into Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. With its red two and half tall stilettos, this essential musical returns with its high-energy showstoppers and emotional performances! Winner of six Tony Awards including Best Musical, it comes at no surprise that KINKY BOOTS remains a fan favorite. This larger than life show pulls at the heartstrings while keeping it upbeat, ultimately ending in culmination of lessons to learn from that are just as prevalent in todays world as ever before! You’ll wind up on your feet cheering, no doubt, but will also leave feeling inspired to make positive change.
Following a similar screenplay to the Miramax movie of the same name, KINKY BOOTS the musical features a golden lineup of songs by Cyndi Lauper. From ballads to glitzy, showy musical numbers, this musical ranges through everything a theatergoer could ever ask for. KINKY BOOTS delivers a nonstop energetic ride with pacing that could keep even the most fidgety person engaged.
As I have mentioned in a previous review, my best way to quickly describe the show is that it’s Billy Elliot meets Tommy Boy. Inspired by a true story, KINKY BOOTS tells an emotional story of a man struggling to overcome prejudice and another mans struggle to save his late fathers shoe factory. In an effort to save the factory including everyones job in it, Charlie Price faces a challenge in keeping his girlfriend happy while finding a way to save the company. After running into a cross-dressing entertainer, Lola, with the physique of a boxing champion, Charlie discovers a high-heeled alternative for his business.
Bringing his solution back to his unsupportive girlfriend and even more perplexed employees, Charlie and Lola must work together showing the team that the only way to save the factory is to enter into a whole new world of big, SEXY shoes. Their biggest dilemma however will be accepting one another. KINKY BOOTS strums along following a standard formula, but is supported by a cast of colorful cross-dressers, breathtaking performances, and powerful musical numbers that will have grinning ear to ear. I am not just giving some cliche oneliner, it’s the truth!
The show truly triumphs because of its characters, and it takes good actors and performers to pull them off. This production make no exception delivering a mere-perfect representation of world class musical experience. From fantastic staging to powerful vocal performances to hilarious characterization to downright top-notch acting, KINKY BOOTS makes sure to hit you with a one – two – punch and knocks you out by its final curtain call.
Those that are familiar with the show are most likely only read about three things; Charlie, Lola, and Lauren. These three characters are the true heart and soul of the show and requires three strong leading performers to fill those, uh… shoes. While Lola starts off a little off like the show does in general, everything comes together quickly I as I found myself attached to all three halfway through Act I.
I feel KINKY BOOTS, in general, starts off with a lack of compelling story and some rather lyrically silly songs that could have people concerned for whats to come. But fear not! The shows really starts rolling by “Step One”, a solo song for Charlie just a few numbers in. The hardcore fans here maybe wondering why I didn’t start with Lola introduction, “Land of Lola”. Well, lets back up a little.
Charlie is racing through the dark streets of London before getting knocked out, literally, by the infamous Lola. The audience knows what’s coming… it’s who everyone is really here to see. The lights dim, the sequence shines, and cue that grandiose figure, LOLA! Unfortunately, her song just falls flat for me and made Lola, played by Jos N. Banks, come across as bit of a lackluster of energy. Perhaps his voice wasn’t quite there yet, but I ask to give it a couple more songs and you will surely be ALL IN. Banks gave Lola the stage presence she deserves and delivered an incredible performance filled with extravagance and confidence. KINKY BOOTS is nothing with a solid Lola, Jos N. Banks hits the mark and surpasses it.
Lauren, the lovable little quirky shoemaker has a thousand redeemable qualities that requires a certain type of physical humor and voice talent to bring this character to life. A challenge can be that her character is over-the-top to the tenth degree, which at times can come across as taxing. Sydney Patrick that plays this eclectic character of sorts does a great job, but took it into directions that were a bit too much for me at times. Its something a little silly to fault her for as she played the character right. In the end, I was in love with her though. So take it for what it’s worth.
Our leading man Charlie is played by Lance Bordelon. He shines during every solo and hits notes in “Soul of a Man” that I don’t think I ever heard hit before! I loved his inflection and his acting even more. Great presence with meaningful acting moments that felt raw, even genuine.
The show contains several musical numbers that can rival the best of the best. Its soundtrack does not do this show justice. This is a show that has to be experienced in the theater so you can feel each belting note hit you the chest and leave your arms covered with goosebumps at each crescendoing climax. Not to mention, the class of drag queens in this production were beautiful. No really, gorgeous! It shows they take a lot of pride in their performances and one even does a somersault in high-heels. INSANE!
KINKY BOOTS is a tough show to write about as there is no way to properly explain its impact and its importance to society. While it is easy to say that it reminds us that we must except each other for who they are, it doubles down with it themes and stresses that we can change the world when you change your mind. Perhaps this musical is more important for our leaders to see, but we can still help the change by accepting others and spreading love.
KINKY BOOTS is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa until February 11th.

Flashback to 2012: A recent college graduate applies to be part of The Disney College Program, forever shaping the destiny of his life and providing a path that would ultimately lead to this article.
Dramatic flair aside, this year marks my 5th anniversary of being accepted to The Disney College Program and moving down to Southern California to be a part of one of the best adventures I could imagine. Throughout the course of that journey, I had the unique opportunity to document and share my experiences through videos and personal vlogs.
A full playlist is above. It was a lot of fun to document my journey and share it with you all!
Yet, I have never really written about the program officially. I wanted to take this week’s post to reflect on those wonderful months with Disney, provide some advice for anyone that may be curiouser and curiouser, as well as highlight something truly special shared by all those who have or will participate in this internship.
Making the overnight drive down to Anaheim back in 2013.
That adventure started in January of 2013. A Northern California native, I had never spent more than a few days at a time in Southern California and was completely uprooted to make the dream come true of working for The Walt Disney Company. All the promotions, videos, and positive press marketing aside, I really wanted to find somewhere I truly felt like I was making a difference.
Applying to the college program allowed me to do that. Thousands upon thousands of applicants apply every year for two seasons of the internship (Fall and Spring) with the slim chance of becoming a Disneyland Cast Member and intern with the company. Only 400 or so are accepted out of all those applicants. Excitement was fierce, friendships were made, and a bond was created. We were all in this together, even though it had nothing to do with High School Musical.
Check In Day
On that first day, I had all my possessions packed into a tiny car and only a half bag of Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles to get me through the week. I had no money in my bank account, and I was eager to get to work while everyone else was just happy to relax and enjoy the calm before the storm of training and orientations. The check in process can be a bit daunting and tiring, so for anyone interested in taking the plunge and moving down to Anaheim, I highly recommend packing light and getting to your arrival location as early as you can.
Arrival!
Take note of what you see when you first move in, as the apartments will be furnished and should be left in the same condition as they were found upon that first day. In my case, we had to replace at least a couple of bowls due to a few clumsy moments I had over the program. You will also be responsible for partnering with your roommates to keep the place clean for weekly inspections from the program staff. If you are lucky, you will have a roommate you have chosen yourself; however, if not, it’s a great opportunity to get to know your roommates and get a once over of what your place has and may need for your time there.
My side of the apartment during the program was pretty nice.
For most program terms, a Facebook page or other media group will form to allow fellow interns to speak to one another, learn about the program, and provide support. It also gives you the chance to find a potential roommate, though there are no guarantees. These pages are monitored by Disney and the program though, so be mindful what you put out there for all to see.
The very first day I made some long term friends, a few that I am still in touch with to this day. We helped each other buy groceries, apartment supplies, and explore the area around us. It was a wonderful start, and the program gave me a lot of opportunities to meet and greet with so many new faces. If you’re lucky, you can really make a lasting bond with someone, which will make the experience that much more fun.
One of my first nights, I was lucky enough to catch World of Color with my fellow CPS.
Though, I also know things aren’t perfect. During my program, not everyone got along, and for most, it was the first time being away from home or family. Even though I had been living on my own for a while, not everyone had that shared experience. There may be some conflict, some drama, and some misunderstandings between the people you will get to know over the course of the program.
I know we had our share of issues as a group, and though I won’t go into detail about any of those interesting memories, I will say that it’s important to stray away from anyone you don’t trust or feel comfortable around. I was very fortunate for the friends and roommates I spent my time with, but not everyone could say the same.
Be on your best behavior. Though it seems obvious, it can make things a lot harder and could potentially end up in a packed bag and a trip home if you are too far off the cuff. Thankfully, I had plenty of time to adjust to the new people and living situation. Now that I was settled in, I could leap into to my next step: Training.
Most job sites give you maybe a day to a couple of hours of training before sending you out into the fray. Disney; however, puts you through a pretty intensive training process that is a nice surprise to those who are used to being tossed into the mix before they have a chance to ask any questions. A lot can be said for experience on the job, but actually having the opportunity to learn and spend some time getting comfortable with the company you work for is a definite asset to success.
I had plenty of time to be awkward and learn my new role.
Multiple classes take you through the process of what it means to be a part of the Disney brand. You learn how to handle tough situations, what to expect in your assigned role, and how to put your best foot forward in a positive way. Being a Cast Member, even if you are just an intern, is a big representation of Disney. This is both fun, but a very serious responsibility and should not be taken lightly.
Going through my college program was some serious work, and for anyone reading this article interested in applying, please note: This is not a vacation. Yes, there is a lot of fun, magical, and surprising moments, but you will have to roll up your sleeves and work hard to succeed.
Training also allows you to see where you will spend your time while with the company. In my case, I was one of the first new hires brought into Cars Land. Along with a small handful of CPs, I found my home at the late Luigi’s Flying Tires attraction. I couldn’t be more excited. I had two great trainers who answered all my questions, allowed me to make mistakes, and gave me real support going into my final assessment.
I received a prize for passing my PA. Sadly, I have since lost that jet.
Before you can be officially signed off to work, you will need to be tested on your training skills and on the job knowledge. Doing some light studying and research is a great tool, and will be necessary pending on your role. To make it fun, I also learned as much about my location as possible, that way I had something to surprise my own training staff with.
When training, use your resources, buckle down, and relax. Your trainers are there to support you and make sure you succeed in your role. Starting out can be a challenge, especially as a CP. You will be working alongside seasoned Cast Members, who are there full time, and are expected to be role models for anyone new coming in. Take advantage of their experience. It’s okay to ask questions, and if you aren’t sure about something, take a step back and let your trainer get you back on track.
It doesn’t hurt to be friendly either. Like I said, you are working along with seasoned Cast. Creating a friendship and common interest will make the job more fun and easier when things get tough. Some of my most potent memories of that experience come from those first few days of training. It makes a big impact.
Working your location will also provide you with opportunities to partner with other roles and Cast Members in your area. Though I was in Attractions, I worked very closely with PhotoPass, Custodial, Security, and Maintenance CMs.
Take pride in your role too. Pit Stop!
If you haven’t noticed, The Disneyland Resort works in sync to provide all the entertainment, food, and events that we all take for granted. Every single person works together in a collective goal at keeping the resort running. Just because you are in one role, doesn’t mean that you are separate from everyone else around you.
It takes a lot of effort to get the park ready, open, and then closed at the end of the day. Thousands upon thousands work hard to provide the fun and memories we all cherish. I have a lot of respect for how Disneyland functions, and the College Program really helped me understand how much elbow grease goes into every inch of that park.
Tower of Terror was a wonderful example of how hard work provided amazing and fearful results!
When completing the program, you will also have to learn to balance class and education with your workload. As an intern, I received full time hours and scheduling priority to ensure I could have my shifts revolve around either my days off or my shift times. Each CP will have to take one class during their term, and since I did the Spring program, I had to take two over the course of the program.
There’s still plenty of time to visit the park. Look at all these tickets from just the first few weeks!
These classes are designed to be a resource in learning about the company, how to brush up on your interview skills, and how to succeed out there in the adult world. The more intense courses also provide college credit. As a graduate, this wasn’t as appealing to me, since I had already received my degree. However, for anyone that is still going through the motions in college, it’s a great bonus and incentive. Those classes were fun, and gave me a wider scope of the resort and company.
Maybe I should have had a career in Stark Industries?
As time went on, I grew confident in my skills, and wanted to learn what else there was to do after my program had ended. Each program is a fixed set of time and there is no guarantee you will remain with the company pending on the role you were assigned to. While I did my program, I researched other roles and departments, seeing what transfer opportunities there were to find out what I would do when graduation commenced.
I almost ended up graduating with a Walt Disney World ear hat.
Ultimately, I focused on Guest Relations as well as Hotel Operations. I also began the transfer process before my program came to a close. So, I recommend for those who are interested in staying on after their program ends to speak to their manager about any opportunities early. It’s better to be prepared than to wait last minute. Even if you aren’t interested in transferring or staying on after the program ends, the more you know about the process the better.
The reason I decided to switch from my role was due to my scheduling. As said earlier, all CPs get scheduling priority, and for most roles, you are treated like a brand new CM right when your program ends. This means you start completely over, and have to build up your seniority. When you are used to more hours and flexible scheduling, it can be a rough transition. So be prepared. Some of my first shifts right off the program were only four hours, and sometimes at closing. It was a huge change and one that will be harder to balance with anything going on outside of your role.
It’s not all about work and books though, as the program tries to allow you a chance to add a little bit more fun than the average internship. Special events are hosted throughout the CP to help keep you motivated and inspired. These will include tours of various locations such as The Walt Disney Studios, exclusive film screenings, raffles, and hosted events.
Program events include back stage tours, like this one I did for World of Color.
Nothing beats being able to spend time in Walt Disney’s apartment, riding Space Mountain with the lights on, or seeing a free movie with no crowds or lines. The events change each program, so it’s hard to say what the future holds for anyone new to it all. Ultimately, I was very pleased and excited with every event I went to.
My very first event calendar.
Scheduling was very important to keep in mind though. I almost missed the Space Mountain event I went to due to working a night shift. Make sure that if you want to experience a special tour or event, that you work with your location to try and coordinate your schedule around it. It’s not a guarantee, but keeping an eye on your work schedule could make the difference between a memory and a missed opportunity.
Our program also ended with my very first D23 Expo.
Even when I ventured out on my own, I always found new things to do at Disneyland and was one of the first people to experience Mickey and the Magical Map, and the newest Fantasyland expansion of Fantasy Faire. Growing up as a regular park guest, I never got the opportunity to see the park change or evolve.
Lost Friends Week. RIP
This was my first real taste of Disney’s progress and I couldn’t have been more excited. Though the park has gone through some more drastic changes since then, those were the first steps into the hardcore Disneyland fan that I am today. Funny to think about, as I already thought I was obsessed before I moved down to work there.
The debut show of Mickey and the Magical Map.
5 years later, I am no longer a Disney Parks Cast Member, but I will always hold onto the special moments I shared because of that first few months with the College Program. I cannot stress enough how thankful I am for those times. Each program has a unique experience, and though the program has also grown and changed since I was a part of it all, we all carry a special bond.
Every program participant has a love for the impossible, the optimism, and legacy that Walt Disney has left behind in the Disney brand. The program is a way to express that admiration and passion. For those interested, it’s a bucket list experience that is hard to pass up.
Though, for anyone wanting to sign up, there’s a lot of information to review and tips out there to make the experience the best it can be. So many past participants have shared their own advice, posted videos, and given a guide on how to apply and go through the program. My advice is make the program your own. Everyone’s path is different.
You may have different reasons behind your application, your own story to share during the interview process, and other unique chances that alumni may not know about. When you do your research, make sure to set some time aside to reflect on what Disney means to you. What’s your history with the brand and the park?
Over the last ten years, and now eighteen films deep into this ever expanding series, the Marvel Cinematic Universe shows no signs of slowing down. Who can blame them when you you’re one of the most successful properties right now currently in Hollywood? But a studio doesn’t become this successful off of making the same movie time and again, and has to force itself to buck the formula to keep itself fresh and interesting. Enter filmmaker Ryan Coogler, known for his work on Fruitvale Station and Creed, who has not only given us one of the most unique films in the MCU, but what may also be one of the most important superhero films to date with Black Panther. Tasked with bringing the fictional African nation of Wakanda to life, Coogler has delivered a timely film that as much a political and social affair as it is a James Bond film, crafting a truly rousing picture sure to leave audiences cheering.
Following the conclusion of Captain America: Civil War, Prince T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) returns to his home of Wakanda, where he is set to pick up the mantle of King after the death of his father. But upon his arrival, T’Challa finds himself unsure if he’s ready for the mantle, wondering if it’s too soon for him to become king. However, an old foe, Claw (Andy Serkis), working with a man named Erik Stevens (Michael B. Jordan) rock Wakanda to its core, forcing T’Challa to finally pick up the mantle of king. More than that though, T’Challa must also embrace the Black Panther, to not only save his people, but to save his nation as well.
It’s hard not to absolutely fall head over heels for Black Panther, because from the film’s opening prologue, Coogler entrances the audience with a very unique film and world within the confines of a series that felt pretty familiar thus far. Coolger has a very distinct feel in his films, rooted in a very real world approach, that makes everything he does not only relatable, but realistic and real. The world of Wakanda feels tangible from the moment it appears on screen, and Coogler infuses it with his unique sensibilities, be it in ways that the world works, or the characters that inhabit it. Few superhero films let the supporting cast not only have standout moments in a film, but Black Panther goes the extra mile to let all the characters actually matter to the film. Coogler doesn’t waste a single one of his incredibly talented cast here, something that’s not only refreshing, but adds an extra layer to the film as well.
Chadwick Boseman reprises his roles as T’Challa following Civil War, and he feels even more comfortable in the role this time around. Once thing the MCU has always done well was casting its heroes, and they’ve struck gold with Boseman as Panther. The complexity of a man who has to balance what it means to rule while also trying to be a hero isn’t easy, but Boseman does very well under Coogler’s watchful eye. But it’s not just Boseman who stands out, as Michael B. Jordan’s villain, Erik Stevens, is not only one of the MCU’s strongest villains, but he’s one of the most layered and relatable as well. He’s dangerous, and at times unhinged, but on the same coin, his reasoning is rather sound in his beliefs, and you can understand where his frustration and anger with Wakanda comes from. Jordan is enthralling every moment he’s on screen, and with his third collaboration with Coogler, it proves that the two push each other to be the best they can, and you can feel it here. However, enough can’t be said for the trio of Letitia Wright, who plays T’Challa’s sister Shuri, Danai Gurira as the head of the Wakandan guard, Okoye, and Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, T’Challa’s former lover. Each one of these women steal the film, and each anchor a part of T’Challa’s personality, giving him extra dimension, but without only serving his character. It’s a tough tightrope to walk, but Coogler manages to handle it all with ease.
What’s so interesting about Black Panther though is not just the character work, but it’s the dynamic study in current race relations, our world, and where Wakanda fits into it. But not only that, it also presents a really beautiful look into African cultures, whether fictional or not, that is not normally displayed in big budget tentpoles like this. Coogler uses this film as a great way to open conversations about how we look at people and treat them throughout the world, no matter who they are or where they’ve come from, which feels incredibly relevant in the current social climate. For those worried that the political nature of the film takes over too much of the film, rest assured that the film is also action packed, featuring some fantastic set pieces done in a way only Coogler could. Each one feels as grounded as a superhero film can, spliced in with the bombastic nature you come to expect from the MCU. Coogler melds so well with the material, you can feel his passion for the character and the world oozing out of every frame.
Black Panther is an incredibly fresh take on the superhero genre that is a welcome change from the standard formula. Packed with a fantastic cast, great action, and a timely message, the film is one of the biggest surprises that the MCU has brought us. It’s always exciting when this early on into the year we get gifted a film that is this great, this fun, and also feels exciting and new. This is not only a fantastic film in its own right, but this is one of Marvel Studios’ best films to date. Ryan Coogler, you’ve outdone yourself. This is a bold and exciting new playground for Marvel Studios, and I can’t wait to go back. As they say, Wakanda forever!
Alden Ehrenreich is Han Solo in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.
“Thought we were in trouble there for a second”
After several months of waiting, undying curiosity, and anticipation, Star Wars fans can rejoice as Solo: A Star Wars Story finally releases a full length teaser trailer. The trailer itself was teased in a short TV spot during the Super Bowl coverage last night.
Narrated by the smuggler himself, we are given the first puzzle pieces to the soon to be canonical origin story of one of the saga’s most beloved characters. Han has been causing trouble since he was 10 years old, was kicked out of the Imperial Academy, and is just as cocky as when we meet him in A New Hope.
We also get an up close look at Donald Glover’s Lando, stylish as ever. Social media has already been blowing up about his coat and fresh looks. New characters also find their way into the mix with Emilia Clarke as Qi’Ra and a first glimpse at Woody Harrelson.

Harrelson, who plays Tobias Beckett, offers Solo (Alden Ehrenreich) a chance to team up on a daring adventure that allows him to test his will and skills to the limit.

The Falcon is fresh, new, and both familiar and drastically different than the scrap metal we meet in A New Hope. That new car smell is definitely going to linger, but how long into the film before that first dent and scorch mark finds its way onto the hull?
In short, the trailer is exciting and gives us all some fresh and very well needed optimism for Solo. So close to the release date, it was hard to determine whether or not we would actually get a substantial preview prior to rushing off to the big screen debut in May.
Thandie Newton is Val in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.Phoebe Waller-Bridge is L3-37 in SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY.
The real question the trailer brings is, what will this story teach us about Han? What details, characters, and scenarios are going to unfold that are going to share something unexpected?
This project has been under lock and key for the majority of the film’s time in production. Given the directorial changes, reshoots, and lack of previous marketing, Lucasfilm has found themselves in a tricky situation and it’s no mystery that we haven’t had any real details until now because of those challenges. The story concept alone, though intriguing, has created some hesitation from fans and the media alike. The reason for the hesitation comes directly from the source of the story, Han Solo himself.
For the most part, Solo’s character has been taken at face value. He’s a charming anti-hero with witty one liners, a quick trigger finger, and a habit of running into danger. Though his cinematic backstory was never explained in any of the previous films, fans and even Harrison Ford felt that we already have a pretty good understanding of the character.
The new film’s challenge is breaking beyond those preconceived notions and bring us a fresh appreciation of Solo. Now that we have two teasers and new promotional stills, we have a lot to get excited about, discuss, and debate on.
Take a look at some of the new posters below featuring the main cast and cool designs.
