“Andor” series star Andy Serkis reflects on Season One

On Monday, May 1st, “Andor” series star Andy Serkis & executive producer Sanne Wohlenberg attended a fan screening of the popular series on the Disney Studios Backlot. The screening featured three episodes from the hit Disney+ Star Wars series, bringing the intense story arc of Narkina 5 front and center along with an exclusive Q&A hosted by Collider’s Steven Weintraub.

Most viewers will remember the time Cassian Andor goes to Star Wars prison. It was this arc from the show which featured Andy Serkis as a fan favorite and a main player in the show’s larger story. The series’ story follows Cassian Andor’s journey to ultimately becoming a spy for the rebel alliance as told in the 2016 Star Wars film “Rogue One”. Before we meet Andor’s character in that film, showrunner Tony Gilroy, along with executive producers Sanne Wohlenberg, and series star Diego Luna wanted audiences to follow the character’s journey from an ordinary man to a hero of the rebellion all in a galaxy far far away.

Andor

A major part of the “Andor” series and one which lends to heavy character development for its series lead is the introduction of Andy Serkis, “Kino Loy”, whom Andor meets when he arrives at a strange prison located on “Narkina 5″. It was this performance from Serkis as Kino which lead him to become a Star Wars fan favorite almost instantly. Serkis is no stranger to a galaxy far far away (he previously captured a mo-cap performance for Supreme Leader Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy). When asked about joining the series, he was apprehensive about becoming a part of the Star Wars universe once again.

“When I was approached (about the series) I was quite trepidatious,” Serkis remarked. As he spoke about his hesitations, it was clear his caution to joining the series lay with fans who might think “Kino Loy was associated with Snoke!” If you remember during the last Star Wars trilogy release, Snoke theories were all the rage, it seems Serkis did not want to add more fuel to that fire with his casting in this show.

Ultimately, Serkis shared he had joined the show because of “his respect for Tony Gilroy”, whom “he had respected already as a writer, director”, even before he approached him for the part. It was because of this respect when asked about when he ultimately made the decision to join the show he answered, ” I pretty much knew when I first talked to Tony about being a part of it (the series) “. After discussing his time before and then actually agreeing to join the production, Serkis began to share with the audience in attendance some of his experience on the set of Narkina 5.

Serkis spoke about how acting on the special prison set made for its own unique challenges. “There was nowhere to hide on the set, (there were) bright glaring lights (everywhere)… we were wearing paper clothes… those uniforms were so demoralizing” he humorlessly quipped, he elaborated how the mixture of the unique set and his costume helped him to better play the role in the way he needed to. “It mucked your head around, and really got you into character”, Serkis added.

Andor

When asked whether or not he took his costume home from the set he responded, “I use them as my pajamas”, to which he then truthful told about the condition of his costume once production wrapped, as being not being something you would want to take home with you.

The anecdote he appeared most assumed to share was his experience in finding his “sliders” after each take, with the cast working barefoot throughout their scenes, he created a picture of how “after each takes it was fifty people going for their sliders, and out of the fifty trying to remember which ones were yours”

One curious fan asked Serkis about his “headcanon” for what happened to Serkis’s character after his final tragic appearance in the series; this was asked shortly after the moderator asked a similar question about his character’s swimming abilities that could lend to his escape in which Serkis replied, “There is a scene (we haven’t seen) of Kino in his own cell practicing his crawl and the breath stroke”, with this obvious humorous reply being met by laughter from the audience.

In response to the actor’s own Headcanon, he gave a few short sentences about what he thinks Kino did to survive if he could not escape, “He would’ve found other survivors and others who weren’t able to make it out, He would’ve stayed and galvanized everyone together… Other survivors would have had to be there… He would have done all manner of means to gather everyone together to survive.”

Speaking to his own assessment of his character and how these actions would lend over to Kino, Serkis spoke about he viewed Kino’s life before his prison sentence, ” Prior to being in (prison ) he would’ve been someone with a great heart. He elaborated that he would’ve been a family man and a community leader which lent to his actions in helping others on Narkina 5.

With no clear indication of Serkis’s return in season two, he was able to speak further to the end of his character’s story for now along with Wohlenberg, when they spoke about the infamous “I can’t swim scene” being the last scene shot on season one.  When they spoke about the final day of filming they both recalled “The diving scene was the end of it, after that, that was the wrap.”

Speaking of episode director Tobey Haynes, Serkis shared that ” he was interested in the nuance of the performance, (for this scene) “. Fans can now know such a heartfelt scene and some of the arguably best acted of the season were given the time and attention that can so clearly be felt on screen. We will have to wait until Season two of “Andor” to see if he survived his tragic fate that we last saw him face.

Andor

Executive producer Sanne Wohlenberg also spoke about the set which ultimately became the setting for the prison,  Wohlenberg about the set had said how it was “cleverly used and reused” to cut down on the cost of the series. She went on to speak about the budget of the Disney+ show and its unique complications with filming on location.

When later asked about any consideration of the use of “the volume ” in “Andors'” production she replied, “Tony’s writing doesn’t lend itself to being used in the volume…His writing simply doesn’t cater to it”. With other Star Wars Disney+ productions making use of “the volume” in their productions, what seems to set this show apart is not only known for its unique storytelling but its filming location that seems to set it apart from its predecessors.

From its acting to its production design, Andor has set itself apart from the other current Star Wars shows. With the show going into award season with hopefully Emmy nominations on the horizon, one can’t help but think it will be heartfelt conversations like these from Serkis, during this for your consideration season and insight from its executive producer that will exhibit how game-changing this series is for Star Wars.

In the now infamous chant from Kino Loy, there is only “one way out” for “Andor” this award season, that is as a winner in its categories. It was only fitting than at the end of the evening Serkis on his way out of the theater, chanted with fans “one way out, One way out, one way out”

Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3” Movie Review

Guardians of the Galaxy

The Guardians of the Galaxy are back! Maybe not as the cast as you remember them exactly, there have been some additions as of late to the roster, but this is truly a return to form for these fan-favorite characters. This rag-tag crew has been through a storied journey on film together and sometimes apart, but never alone, to become just a true family of misfits we have come to know and love. That journey has spanned the course of five film appearances as well as one Disney+ original Holiday Special, with each project seemingly knitting these characters closer together and at the same time adding additional members along the way.

The last few MCU projects that have featured these characters have been woven into the larger MCU and cleverly disguised as character-driven pieces that have showcased that these Guardians of the Galaxy thrive in that form of storytelling.  What affects one of these Guardians seems to affect all in their larger story. Just like us fans, the MCU experience on screen is different post-Endgame, and those repercussions are felt that much more in this film.

Andor

The Guardians are dealing with the loss of Gamora (played masterfully once again by Zoe Saldana), who was once a part of their beloved family, and the love interest for Chris Pratt’s “Peter Quill.” As Pratt’s character deals with the loss of Gamora, in more amusing ways than one, he delivers a heartfelt performance as he continues to deal with love and loss throughout the film all while his character also continues to grow with his found family. As this family continues to grow and friends come and go, some pains for these characters stay the same.

That is where this story begins as well as ends. This film takes us through the pains, emotional and physical traits these characters endured and yet still throughout the course of the film suffer because of how strong their bond is with one another. Indeed some of these painful experiences on screen may be upsetting for most viewers to watch but none are done for the sake of shock but rather to drive these characters and their stories throughout the film.

These shocking scenes, seen as flashbacks directed by James Gunn, evoke storytelling that was perfected by Francis Ford Coppola in The Godfather Part II. In that film the flashbacks served as a backstory to the Corelene family, here they serve as a tragic backstory to Rocket.

Andor

The story starts with and gives a fitting end to the story arc of Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper), this always-seemingly oddball has been portrayed throughout his time in the MCU as brash, selfish, and a little more than arrogant. His character has developed beyond those characteristics in recent MCU projects, to become an essential part of this family, as well as truly a Guardian of the ENTIRE Galaxy (you’ll remember he teamed up with the Avengers to bring back half the universe).

His character’s portrayal in this film as being the brains of the operation is highlighted in this film. It is what drives the plot, and that is not a task that is taken lightly here by the production, this essential part of the movie, and one on which the crux of the movie stands, is what gives its most human element.

Rocket’s skill set which has been showcased throughout the course of his time in the MCU is finally given a back story explored as being both a blessing and curse. Rocket is a unique being in the larger MCU, that is even compared to those he’s played alongside a talking tree and a literal god.  His existence and skills are explored throughout the film, and through engaging storytelling.

As characters’ motivations are explored and character arcs are brought to their furthest reach, this is when you realize that this film is what has been so missed in the MCU lately and also makes it worth watching. The action is a return to form for direction and CGI-filled pandemonium that has been missed in the MCU, and only this group has been able to bring time and time again.

Andor

The action sequences are spread throughout and are not as often made as large as expected to be, but when the action sequences are on the big screen along with the movie’s soundtrack, you can’t be expected not to be grinning from ear to ear. The larger set pieces for some of the sequences are executed well by James Gunn and Co., and the CGI-fueled beatdowns these characters are known for are done in tighter set pieces amongst all the CGI madness and they are the better for it, including one of the best-extended fight sequences in recent MCU memory.  Everyone brings their A-game for this action-packed, emotional send-off to the Guardians.

Each of the Guardians has their time to shine in this epic conclusion, and each of their own motivations and story arcs is so wonderfully explored here, that you don’t even mind the runtime at a little over the two-hour mark. While some things by films end change for our characters it feels as if some things stay the same, and that’s not a bad thing, this is found in “Drax” played by Dave Bautista, and Pom Klementieff’s “Mantis” with these two there are guaranteed brand of humor and familiarity that can always be depended on for those moments as well as heartfelt ones, they deliver a performance that reminds us why we have grown to love every member.

Andor

Amongst others returning is “Kraglin” played by Sean Gunn. His character has been an essential part of this team, and this really shows throughout the film. His presence feels familiar and is welcomed amongst many of the other returning characters, as they finish their story arcs. The team would also not be complete without Karen Gillain’s “Nebula” as well as Vin Diesel’s “Groot”.

These characters’ sacrifices for the rest of their found family throughout this series and in the larger MCU are not taken for granted. They have both been core parts of the larger MCU including being in both Avengers three and four respectively. These characters remind us not to underestimate what easily could just be a talking tree and an android in any other sci-fi film as of late, but in this movie, their characters are truly unsung heroes.

Filling out the rest of the cast is Maria Bakalova as “Cosmo the Space Dog” who is a joining member of the Guardians, a character that has been showcased since they were featured as an easter egg in the first film. This character’s addition pays off in a really nice way for this story and is a welcome addition. Appearing as the film’s antagonists are Will Poulter as “Adam Warlock” and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary respectively.

Poulter, it would seem like Bakalova’s character has been hinted at since the first film as an easter egg as well. His inclusion is what fans have been tepidly hoping for and does not disappoint that his character gets to play. Although many find him underused in this film, beyond being a simple Superman in this story, his character does come with a promise.

Andor

The most compelling character is Iwuji as the film’s villain, whose story and motivations are intertwined with the existence of Rocket. He evokes a Bond villain in his portrayal in this film and one that is dying to be seen on the big screen. His villainous story told throughout the movie, is what feels like what has been missing as of late. You’ll find there are no redeeming qualities for him, he’s just evil plain and simple. He is played by Iwujii in such an over-the-top way, it leaves you wanting more.

With more motivations largely explored and story arcs finished by the movie’s end, this film may very well leave the audience satisfied with the fact that we were able to say goodbye to this unique family in such an awesome and heartfelt way. If the Avengers characters gave us a satisfying conclusion to their character arcs in “Avengers Endgame” then the same can be said for this group.

The Guardian’s story concluding with this trilogy is done so with the love and care of a creative team that outpaces those other projects the studio has been releasing as of late. This is the same studio that has brought us great character-driven moments in their movies and has seemed to be burnout with the handling of most of them.

The Ant-Man character just concluded his trilogy and left many fans feeling as if the studio is running out of good stories and ideas within their projects. There appears to be no burnout here, just simply an exciting conclusion to these character-driven stories that have kept us coming back time and time again and that is done so well under the direction of James Gunn, we are left yet wanting more and more.

Marvel fans can only hope for this level of storytelling and direction to return to the big screen, but for now, we can be grateful to the cast and crew for telling such a satisfying ending to what may very well be the best Marvel Trilogy for the foreseeable future.

Watch: Chris Pratt & Jimmy Kimmel make a virtual surprise appearance for guests exiting Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout

Chris Pratt

On Thursday, April 27th, Jimmy Kimmel & Chris Pratt along with a studio audience pulled off a remarkable stunt to promote Chris Pratt’s new film from Marvel Studios, Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, and they did it all live from Jimmy Kimmel’s Hollywood Studio.

The stunt involved a mixture of “AI” as Chris Pratt jokes throughout the stunt (which is simply Chris Pratt miming the robotic nature of an “AI” through the course of that stunt), a live 3d image projector (think of an advanced zoom call screen), cast members from the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout attraction (which is at Disney California Adventure Park) ushering the unsuspecting guests to experience the “AI”, and finally Jimmy Kimmel and his live studio audience to pull of one of the best promotional materials for a film I have ever seen.

Andor

The skit which I’ll refer to it further, first leads unsuspecting guests who appear to have been selected while exiting the ride, to a cast member hallway just beyond the ride’s exit. Once ushered into this hallway hilarity ensues. Chris Pratt playing his “AI” counterpart greets guests as just that an “AI” counterpart, Pratt then proceeds to interact with the guests as a software program, acting and miming as a computer program would.

The Chris Pratt computer program acts out what you would think an “AI” of Chris Pratt would act and sound like, except with a blend of his own unique humor, that no computer could ever hope to replicate. This type of humor has the guests confused and in shock, but all in good fun. Pratt speaks with more than a few guests as his “AI” counterpart while also encouraging them and flat-out asking them if they plan to watch his new Marvel Studios film.

The skit ends with Pratt welcoming Jimmy Kimmel to join him in this large screen projector to reveal to the guests that he and Jimmy are actually just that, themselves, and that they are live from Hollywood. Pratt was on the show Thursday night promoting the new Guardians of the Galaxy Film before he attended the World Premiere of his movie across the street at the Dolby Theater.

Disney Animation Studios Releases “Wish” Trailer

Disney Animation Studios

Check out the new trailer, plus a poster for Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Wish,” which opens exclusively in theaters on Nov. 22. The trailer introduces 17-year-old Asha, the powerful King Magnifico, Asha’s pet goat Valentino, and Star, a celestial ball of boundless energy that Asha’s wish calls down from the sky. It also features a snippet of the song “This Wish,” performed by Ariana DeBose; it’s one of several new songs written by Julia Michaels and Benjamin Rice for the film.

The all-new musical-comedy welcomes audiences to Rosas, a fantastical land located off the Iberian Peninsula. “Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said director Chris Buck, who helms the film with Fawn Veerasunthorn. “People come from everywhere to give their wishes to a magical king who promises to grant their deepest desires—someday. Only he can decide which wishes will come true and when.”

Added Veerasunthorn, “We have been inspired by so many iconic films over Disney Animation’s 100 years, especially stories where we explore the power of someone with a wish, combined with the conviction to make that wish come true. Being able to honor that legacy with this incredible story and these amazing characters has been a joy for our entire team.”
