Mickey’s Toontown to Reopen at Disneyland Park on March 8

Disneyland

It’s Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse’s birthday! In honor of this special occasion, the Disneyland Resort is pleased to announce the official reopening date of Mickey’s Toontown in Disneyland park – March 8, 2023!

It was this time last year that Mickey’s Toontown would undergo an ambitious reimagining, and reopen with some all-new experiences for families and young children to have more opportunities to play together inside Disneyland park. At D23 Expo in September, we shared a bit more about the interactive play areas and how we are stepping into a new era of inclusive experiences in this land for families of all ages.

I know we are all excited to see just how Mickey’s Toontown will become a vibrant symphony of sights, sounds and sensations very soon. Here’s a look at some of what you can expect when the land reopens on March 8!

The reimagined Mickey’s Toontown will provide open, grassy play spaces for everyone to unwind, starting with CenTOONial Park, the first space guests will see when they enter the land. CenTOONial Park will be anchored by two new interactive play experiences; a beautiful fountain featuring water tables designed for play that invite guests to have a sensory experience, plus a nearby dreaming tree with sculpted tree roots providing an opportunity for children to crawl and explore.

Mickey’s Toontown will be home to the new attraction, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway! Inside the El CapiTOON Theater, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will put you in the wacky and unpredictable cartoon world of Mickey and Minnie, where you’ll board a train with Goofy as the engineer.

Disneyland

One magical moment after the next leads you to a zany, out-of-control adventure filled with surprising twists and turns that the entire family will enjoy!

As you may already know, Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway will open on Jan. 27, when the Disney 100 Years of Wonder Celebration comes to life at Disneyland Resort!

Disneyland

Over in Goofy’s neck of the woods, you’ll find Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard, as shown in this new aerial rendering of the area.

Disneyland

Dedicated to all things play, Goofy’s How-To-Play Yard incorporates a whimsical soundgarden where kids will discover new ways to make wacky noises, as well as enjoy an all-new, elevated clubhouse.

Disneyland

When you step inside Goofy’s House, you’ll find a fun, interactive candy-making contraption that only Goofy could imagine! The confectionery contraption begins high outside of Goofy’s home, as drips of honey fall from a beehive onto a chute that slides the colorful drops around and down into the home. From there, junior candymakers will help Goofy make the candy, and the silly sounds of household appliances will combine to make a truly Goofy symphony.

Disneyland

Donald’s Boat will be perched in the duck pond of the Goof homestead. Imagine larger-than-life spinning water lilies, balance beams and rocking toys at Donald’s Duck Pond that will help little ones get the wiggles out. Kids will definitely love making a splash in this space! You also can look into the boat through the portholes to witness bubbles of fun inside the flooded vessel and interact with some familiar ducklings including Huey, Dewey, Louie and Webby.

For those wanting to get a little “nutty,” you can head over to Chip ‘n’ Dale’s GADGETcoaster, where Mickey’s Toontown’s favorite tinkerer, Gadget Hackwrench, has created a one-of-a-kind, fun-sized coaster for the town’s tiniest citizens.

Disneyland

And at Mickey’s House and Minnie’s House, you’ll once again be able to step right into their homes and enjoy a self-guided tour as you discover special surprises in every room. You may even be able to visit with Mickey and Minnie while you’re there, should they be home!

Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin will also return, where you can board Lenny the Cab and spin through the streets and alleys of Toontown as you follow the adventures of Roger Rabbit.

And when you feel a snack attack coming on, you’ll be able to turn to two new places to appease your appetites in the land: Café Daisy, where acclaimed culinary expert, Daisy Duck, serves up diner classics at her sidewalk table eatery; and the Toontown Farmers Market at Good Boy! Grocers, a friendly roadside stand, offering grab-and-go drinks and treats.

Be sure to stay tuned for more information about the transformation of Mickey’s Toontown as we get closer to March 8. And in the meantime, please join us in wishing our beloved Mickey and Minnie a very happy birthday!

Both a Theme Park reservation and valid admission for the same Park on the same day are required for Park entry. Park reservations are limited, subject to availability and not guaranteed. Visit Disneyland.com/updates for important information to know before visiting the Disneyland Resort.

Movie Review: Can Disenchanted Spark New Magic?

disenchanted

‘Once Upon a Time’ will never be the same after the release of Enchanted and considering this month marks the 15th anniversary of the film’s theatrical debut, it’s safe to say it has become one of the most beloved Disney stories of all time.

It all stems off the clever crafting of Walt Disney’s classic animation style mixed in with modern and real world struggles, calling to question if dreams can really come true, if true love’s kiss is the most powerful magic of all, and if a simple song could save the day. This bold creative choice pushed the envelope and took a big risk, igniting a magical spark that all these years later, has ignited into a fervorous flame that is yet to be extinguished.

Just as Enchanted brought fairy tales to the modern age in 2007, the era of streaming is once again pushing the medium to the next generation, bringing Giselle and the world of Andalasia from the big screen onto screens of all sizes across all realms over the land.

With the constant demand for new content, 2022 marks the era of legacy sequels, with Disney being no stranger to revisiting hit content; an easy example being the recent release of another streaming exclusive, Hocus Pocus 2. Because of this, the landscape has changed since 2007, and with it, a new layer of hopes and expectations. The pressure is on. Can Disenchanted wield the same magical charm that made Enchanted a timeless classic, or is it destined to be just another option to skip passed in an ever growing library of online streaming content?

As it may have been destined to be, the film is a beautiful wish come true! Disenchanted is as enchanting as the original, filled with magic and excitement, giving fans the follow up they deserve with an endless amount of charm, a delightful symphony of new songs, and performances that will be sure to cast a spell on you!

enchanted

Being a huge fan of the original film, I couldn’t be happier diving back into this rich and fantastical world and was graciously rewarded for doing so. Many classic elements return, such as the use of traditional, hand-drawn animation, which is a marvel all its own considering the medium is a dying art in the industry and one that deserves to endure beyond the transition to digital animation techniques. The film also plays up the fun with Easter eggs and on the nose fairy tale tropes, providing an easy to follow and entertaining story that ventures into unexplored territory, while still maintaining the essence of what made the concept of Enchanted so memorable.

Though, just like the original tale, it all comes down to the power of Amy Adams to seal the deal and make this a worthwhile return. Adams returns to her Andalasian roots as if no time has passed, once again making us all believe in happy endings and being able to sing our hearts out in beautiful ballad. With every single moment of screen time, she is the Giselle we know and love…well, almost!

Adams adds to that unique magic that shimmers so brightly in Giselle, unlocking something deliciously wicked in return and melds the innocent with the daringly dark in a perfect concoction that breaks Disenchanted away from the original tale into something else entirely. It all happens ten years after the events of Giselle’s “Happily Ever After”, and as it turns out, things aren’t as perfect as they may seem. Giselle must come to terms with the real world moving on, with the feeling of “Ever After” fading away despite her best attempts to keep the spark alive.

amy adams disenchanted

Her beautiful voice, unwavering optimism, and Hallmark-esque attitude isn’t enough to overcome the challenges that come with modern adulthood, including changing dynamics with her family, and most importantly, her relationship with her now grown up daughter, Morgan.  In trying to mend those connections, Giselle has the family move to the perfect little town of Monroeville, which only causes a larger rift with Morgan and ultimately, leads to things spiraling out of control after Giselle attempts to use the magic of Andalasia to fix all her problems. With her wish, she comes to find very villainous consequences, cursing her and turning her into the polar opposite of herself: A Wicked Stepmother.

As fairy tale fans are all too familiar, the most powerful lesson when wielding magic is simple: queue Rumpelstiltskin voice and remember- “All magic comes with a price!”. This is where Disenchanted transforms, creating a splintered, cursed, and very conflicted Giselle. This calls on an opportunity for Adams to deliver something fresh to her iconic role, which is absolutely necessary for this story to work all these years later.

What’s even better is this gives fans such a wide array of emotions, personalities, and nuisances that blend together perfectly, creating a performance that is nothing short of triumphant. Adams levels up, and helps usher in the real core of what makes this film so special: Giving the cast a chance to evolve and grow into something more.

Disenchanted does this in every sense of the word, bringing incredibly entertaining new journeys for some of our favorite characters. Patrick Dempsey gets a chance to wield a sword and storm into the very arms of adventure through song and dance (Yes, Patrick Dempsey sings!) and slays with charm and laughter.

If anyone is keeping score, Dempsey may even rival the hilarious musings of his royal counterpart, James Marsden, who returns as Edward. Now King of Andalasia, Marsden slips right back into his royal form with ease, bringing in a much needed charisma that never ceases. The only downside that comes along for the ride in this film is that Marsden doesn’t get as much screen time.

Yet, once you have an opportunity to see what direction the story goes, you will see that it may be a sacrifice well worth it. Idina Menzel being a perfect example, blossoming beyond the confines of her original role and delivering a powerhouse diva in Nancy that fans have waited years to see. Her new song, “Love Power”, is a dream come true in itself and really does justice to just how special Menzel is.

Alan Menken, who had previously revealed he had tried multiple times to get Menzel a song in the original, delivered gloriously, leaving that ever so familiar magic touch that is felt throughout the entire soundtrack. Menken also crafts a whole new selection of songs, including some extremely entertaining sides for the film’s new cast.

In her Disney debut, Gabriella Baldacchino takes over the reigns as Morgan from Enchanted’s Rachel Covey. Baldacchino’s introduction is a perfect pairing for Adams, delivering a loving chemistry that takes center stage and brings the film to new heights in a breakthrough performance that hopefully opens new doors for the young actress. The true essence of this film comes from her relationship with Adams and its one that fans will surely resonate with.

amy adams

Though, this may not be the only relationship viewers will want to keep their eyes on, as Disenchanted introduces a new baddie into the mix with Maya Rudolph. Playing the part of Malvina, Rudolph bursts into the scene with a quick wit and gumption for trouble. Helped by her two minions, Rosaleen (Yvette Nicole Brown) and Ruby (Jayma Mays), Malvina has a firm grip on the picture perfect town of Monroeville, calling all the shots and standing to be the pillar of perfection.

In doing so, she acts as the perfect parallel for Giselle, focusing all her might and energy on living up to her own exaggerated view of herself, all the while seeing Giselle as a threat. Adams and Rudolph play on that marvelously, and with it, cast a spell all their own with a musical number that is fiery, fun, and extremely catchy.

It all builds up into an incredible ride, filled with all the right ingredients to satisfy both a taste for the original flair while unraveling a beautiful new series of layers for all its characters. Disenchanted ultimately continues the legacy proudly, giving fans a love letter that despite deserving that big screen experience, is very much worth holding dear for years to come.

The Return of Giselle- A Chat with Amy Adams

amy adams disenchanted

November 21st will mark the 15th anniversary of Enchanted and to celebrate the milestone anniversary, as well as to discuss her triumphant return to the role of Giselle in the upcoming Disney+ sequel, Disenchanted, Amy Adams recently sat down to discuss the longstanding power Giselle has had in her career as well as how it felt when the original film debuted those 15 years ago.

“For me, it was interesting because we were looking at where Giselle would be now and when we leave her in the last movie, there’s been an evolution from the beginning of the movie of Enchanted to who Giselle is at the end of the movie. Sort of taking that taking that evolution of who she might be after spending ten years, but also making sure we keep her grounded in sort of the truth of her feelings but without losing that joy and that naivety and innocence and purity that makes Giselle so special”

Staying true to the spirit of Giselle was essential, and something Adams did not take for granted. “That was sort of where my launching place was, was taking everything I loved about Giselle in the first movie and just getting this opportunity to spin it throughout this one”

She would go on to admit that Giselle has always been a part of her core and a character that felt very natural returning to. “Coming back, I feel like Giselle never left me. We were in the meeting with Disney and I just flipped right back into it and like talking about where I thought she was and I just was realizing that it was the right time. Like, she was in there ready to come out”

Yet, getting to this point was an unknown to Adams, especially looking back at 2007 with the release of the original film. At the time, Adams admitted they weren’t sure fans would be receptive to such a unique story premise.

“With Enchanted, we were taking like a big leap. I knew how much I loved Giselle and how much I believed in her spirit.  We just got into it, not really knowing what it would be or if people would get it.”

amy adams

She would go on to add what it was like experiencing that initial fan reaction, wondering if Enchanted would be as well received as she hoped it would be.

“I do remember feeling really scared the first time I watched it with an audience…It was in London and it was very quiet for the first bit of the movie while people sort of started to understand what they were seeing and then I remember after ‘Happy Working Song’, there was a shift in the energy where the audience started going on the journey with us and it was a really overwhelming feeling for me. It let me know that they understood what we were doing and that they were sort of understanding Giselle’s purity and it was a really wonderful moment.”

disenchantedpic3

Adams knew in that moment that Giselle would leave a lasting impact, and all these years later, it means so much more to bring a new chapter to life and once again, take a leap of faith that the fans will love this new chapter of Giselle’s story.

“It was a very special moment for me. It was really early on in my career too. This movie has meant so much to me in so many ways, so just grateful to get to come back and revisit Giselle at this point in my life.”

Idina Menzel Reveals Enchanted Song Cut From Original Film

enchanted

Idina Menzel’s voice is one of the most iconic, powerful, and well known in all the land, so it may come as a mystery why Menzel wasn’t given a single note to sing in 2007’s hit film,  Enchanted. Yet, that mystery may have just been uncovered almost 15 years to the debut of the original film and more importantly the why behind one of Disney’s most puzzling questions.

With the upcoming release of Disenchanted on Disney+, Menzel sat down and had a chance to speak about her song work for Enchanted with legendary composer, Alan Menken, who like Menzel, is returning for the highly anticipated sequel.

Menken revealed that Menzel was not only meant to sing in the original Enchanted, but had crafted specifically with her in mind. “We had two attempts in the first movie to do that, we just couldn’t get it in. It was timing,” he admitted.

Idina recalled one of the songs, discussing what it was like working with Menken on trying to get Nancy’s song into the film. “We shot one of them and I remember Jenny said ‘this isn’t going in the movie, it’s gonna be on the cutting room floor.’ I was like, what do you mean it’s gonna get cut? She’s like, ‘It’s never gonna make it’

Yet, Menzel admitted that it had to happen to fit with the pacing of the rest of the story despite her musical chops. “It was just superfluous at the time because you (Menken) were trying too hard and I really appreciate that but now you made up for it in so many ways that I’m singing a song that I can barely sing live if I tried”.

Menken once again teams up with legendary songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, crafting all new songs for Disenchanted, that include two songs for Menzel, both of them bringing fans what many would consider 15 years in the making.

“When you have someone like Alan and Stephen writing for you, because they are so incredibly talented, even for character, the way they write melodies and these soaring melodies, it’s kind of their little sign to tell you how to approach it. You don’t even have to think that much because the way they write gives you everything you that you need. To have someone like them write for you, for all of us, it’s such a gift, to have someone take you in,” Menzel exclaimed.

Disenchanted will also give a chance for other returning cast to join in on the musical fun, including Patrick Dempsey’s Robert. Dempsey discussed bringing a new side to Robert and the fun in transforming the character beyond his less-than-enthused attitude towards song and dance from the original film.

Dempsey said it was “great fun with the singing and the dancing. It was a joy! That whole process of going through finding your voice, working with the coach on that. Learning the lyrics and the dance was an extraordinary experience and something I’ve never done before.”

Yet, it was a bit out of his comfort zone as he would go on to admit, nevertheless, something Dempsey was more than willing to take on with enthusiasm and excitement. “It was a great opportunity to play something that was so broad. I don’t get that opportunity and I really loved it. It’s a little bit scary at first but you know it was great, it was a safe environment to work in. It was fun to play and I hope people enjoy that.”

It’s a perfect mix, especially with Menken and Schwartz leading the way with their musical charm. “Rather than writing for any individual actors, Stephen and I, write for the characters and the storyline and take it from there. It so happens that the actors are perfect for this,” Menken said proudly. He, like many returning, feel that Disenchanted will bring the right tune to fans.

“The first Enchanted had the most amazing premise. We start in the world of early Walt Animation and this animated princess has a spell put on her and and is thrown up in Times Square, where’s she’s totally unequipped to deal with what happens and the score kind of grows up with her as she gets to adapt to this world. In the new version, she longs for that world, so we still go back to that,” Menken mentioned.

“They know our voices and they can write for our strengths and then we can really shine and to have that kind of back and forth with composers like the two of them is just, yes,” Menzel added.

Meet the Cast of Disenchanted: A Magic-Filled Interview

Disenchanted

With the eve of the release of Disenchanted on Disney+, we got the opportunity to sit down and connect with the cast and creative minds behind the sequel to the ever popular smash, Enchanted, learning more about the new cast of characters, as well as some exciting updates from our returning cast!

Right away, producer, Barry Josephson, revealed the sequel all began with Amy Adams.  “Amy really was our starting point of wanting to play Giselle again”, yet, she was just the beginning. Adam Shankman takes the reigns from Kevin Lima as the director of Disenchanted, and Josephson let us know that they struck gold with Shankman when the process started.

“When Adam joined, our development process took us into the stratosphere because he brought with it Richard LaGravenese, who developed the script and really went to another level. It was such a joy to see the script come together and become something joyous”.

The challenge would come in finding an original story that was not only true to the first film, but would bring new layers to Giselle and the world of Arandelle. Shankman described his concept, which became the premise of the film’s new direction.

“I walked in and was talking to Sean Bailey, the president of Disney and he was talking about how the project was sitting there and as we discussed it I said well basically…‘You know Giselle is the step-mother. She’s Morgan’s stepmother!’ and that for me became the absolute jumping off point. I was like, that’s low hanging fruit. This is perfect in terms of a continuation. She has this now developed daughter that doesn’t believe in magic anymore”.

“It was sort of a thrill ride from there,” he added. Yet, both of them agreed that the film meant more than just a return of classic characters. “I wanted to work with Amy for so long because we speak a very similar language. I suddenly thought I want to make a movie not with Amy, but for Amy as well,” Shankman revealed.

Shankman would definitely get his wish, as Adams would not only reprise her role as Giselle, but step into the role of producer, reuniting her original cast alongside some new faces that are sure to bring something fresh and exciting to the story.

Getting the return cast together, it was so fun to get to see everybody just step back into it, that we were so lucky to have everyone come join us. I can’t thank them enough, I’m very appreciative. For our new cast members, I was just so so so pleased to get everybody we have”.

Part of that journey involved discovering Gabriella Baldacchino, who will be making her Disney debut as the teenage Morgan Philip. “I think a dream come true is honestly the best way to put it. When I was little, even growing up, Enchanted was my favorite movie, so being able to join all of these people was surreal to me,” Baldacchino admitted.

Finding the right actress for Morgan was key according to Josephson. “That was our ultimate big question mark before we started was. This is such a strong mother-daughter story, and how do we find the right daughter?”

He would go on to admit with no hesitation that Baldacchino was the perfect choice. “When Gabby read I think for me and Adam and Amy, we just completely realized together, at the same time, but we were all separate, different places. She was the one.”

Shankman would add that “pretty much everybody was our first choice”, which fits right in with the fairy tale magic that is needed to bring a film like Disenchanted to life. Joining in that would be Bridesmaids, The Good Place, and SNL Alumn, Maya Rudolph.

Rudolph will be joining the cast as the wicked, Malvina Monroe, who runs the town of Monroeville, calling all the shots and acting as a foil for Giselle throughout the central conflict and climax of the film.

“Even though I had a chance to sing in things before, it was nothing like this experience and knowing I was going to get to write this Menken and Schwartz song was really, truly, almost like a like a life fulfillment. Like I was training for the marathon I’ve been training for my whole life and that what it was every day”

Coming along for the ride are other sitcom and superstar comedy alums, including The Office star, Oscar Nuñez (Edgar),  Yvette Nicole Brown (Rosaleen), and Jayma Mays (Ruby).  Brown, who many know already has ties to the magical world of Disney, revealed a special connection to Enchanted and how the story has come full circle with her being cast in the new film.

“My friend Marilyn Sue played the bus driver in the original Enchanted. You know how you’re just happy for somebody and you feel bad in your soul because it’s not you?”, Brown joked.

“Fifteen years later for the call to come my way and to get to be a part of this group…we all had the best time in Ireland. It was just a lovely gathering, a little troupe of us coming together to make a love letter to everyone that loved the original film and I am just so honored to be a part of it”

Mays shared in the excitement, and like many of the new cast, revealed their love for the original really elevating their joy in getting a chance to tell a new story. “I was so excited to join this cast. I was a huge, huge fan of the first film, so when I got this job, I was like, I can retire now. I did it!”

Nuñez also shared some behind the scenes memories, giving fans a glimpse of how much like Giselle Amy Adams truly is. “While we were waiting to shoot, Amy would sing. You (Amy) were so happy just hanging out and you wouldn’t stop singing with a big smile on your face so there was a lot of love there”

We can’t forget our returning favorites though, as both Patrick Dempsey and Idina Menzel shared their thoughts on what’s changed for their characters and what it was like returning to the roles of Robert and Nancy.

“Robert at the very beginning is very much the same. He’s now trying to balance, you know, life between his new baby and his other child and the conflict between the stepmother and that dynamic,” Dempsey explained. Yet, that was only the beginning.

Robert’s journey takes a very chivalrous turn in Disenchanted, and Dempsey couldn’t have been more excited. “Getting into larger than life was completely freeing and really fun. For me it was a fantastic ride. I had a great time where I could work a little bit, do a little sight seeing in Ireland and work on the musical.

Menzel also got a chance to bring something new to Nancy, who unlike her real life musical self, did not have as whimsical and melodic of a debut as she would have expected in the original film. “Mine was a pretty drastic change,” according to Menzel. “I go from this, you know, cynical New York chick and then I jump down a portal, or a manhole and then I come out. It was so much fun for me.”

Coming back as an Andalasian royal did mix things up a bit for her. “The challenge for me…just trying to figure out the balance. How much of my New York accent do I still have coming from Andalasia and how much is this idyllic, romantic, beautiful, perfect place has rubbed off on me?”

The exciting part is Menzel will get a chance to sing in this film, and with it, gets to honor the incredible works of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. There are plenty of other new surprises coming when Disenchanted debuts exclusively on Disney+ on November 16th.

Adventureland Treehouse at Disneyland Details Finally Unveiled

Adventureland Treehouse

Prepare for a brand new expedition into the wilds of Adventureland, as the Disneyland Resort has finally unveiled the details surrounding the future of the Adventureland Treehouse.

The news broke courtesy of the Disney Parks Blog, which shared the first concept art and inspirations behind the future of this beloved attraction. This also means that the classic Tarzan’s Treehouse theme will be in our heart, always, as a part of Disney history and yesteryear.

The new design will pay tribute to the original imagination of Walt Disney and his Imagineering team who built the 1962 variation of the treehouse, modeled after the Disney classic, Swiss Family Robinson. You can read more about the details and see the concept art below from this excerpt from the Parks Blog!

The Adventureland Treehouse will showcase wonderous new environments created amongst the branches of a giant tree on the shores of the Jungle River, where guests will once again enter by the giant waterwheel and follow the wood rope stairways up, up, up into the boughs.

Here, you will find fascinating rooms that the family in this new story created for one another. From the mother’s music den (as depicted in the concept art above) and the young sons’ nature room to the teenage daughter’s astronomer’s loft, all things are fashioned from found objects, natural resources, and pure ingenuity.

For those who would rather stay on terra firma, the bottom floor will showcase an ingenious kitchen and dining room, along with the father’s art studio, displaying hand-drawn sketches and paintings of each of the rooms.

Adventureland

No details have been shared on an opening date, but the Parks Blog has assured fans there will be more details to come. Make sure to stay tuned to learn all the latest!

In Calico Park, guests can be serenaded by the a capella group, The Sleigh Bells, with a soulful version of Christmas classics.

Every night during Merry Farm, the park comes alive as the lights of the season brighten the night. In Ghost Town, a magical Snow and Glow experience fills the buildings and paths with thousands of lights dancing to the beat of Christmas music while “snow” gently falls. The Wilderness Dance Hall joyously transforms into Santa’s Christmas Cabin, where the entire family can create fond memories by taking photos with Santa Claus and his friends.

Throughout the park, guests can indulge in traditional holiday classics with a twist, including a Merry Farm favorite, crispy breaded turkey bites filled with perfectly seasoned stuffing and sweet cranberry sauce, or Prancer’s pumpkin cheesecake roll funnel cake.

Zootopia+ Weaves a New Story for Disney Fans

ZOOTOPIA

Your Disney+ experience is about to become a little more “Wilde” with the debut of Zootopia+ this week, featuring a brand new series of short stories, each featuring familiar characters and scenes that will tie directly into the original Disney Animation Studios hit, Zootopia.

Gazelle’s lyrics, “Try Everything”, definitely come to mind when looking at the new series, with so many new and fun moments coming to fans across the globe. The creative team behind this new show came together recently to discuss what it was like to revisit Zootopia, as well as how the series will help weave together these new stories into the larger narrative for the franchise.

Director, Josie Trinidad, focused on giving the spotlight to some of the fan favorite Zootopia characters that may have not had the most screen time in the original film. Each character in the series get a chance to tell their own story.

“There are so many rich characters, and we sort of wanted to focus on the others, the secondary characters. We felt like they warranted their own episodes. They warranted the spotlight.” In that Trinidad revealed that when coming to choose from this wide array of characters and stories, it was natural to bring forward stories focusing on Stu and Bonnie Hopps, Mr. Big, as well as the infamous and small time crook, Duke Weasleton.

“The characters are so fun, so interesting and Zootopia is like New York City, where everyone has a story and you really want to delve into each character,” Trinidad added.

Fellow director, Trent Correy, revealed that they had worked on multiple variations of the series, each giving an endless amount of possibility and making it a challenge to narrow down to

“I might have had ten different versions, their world is so ripe and some of them were new characters, but a lot of them were ones we have had met…the range is huge and it really gave us the opportunity to tell different stories like Chief Bogo and Clawhauser their friendship and dynamic at the office. It was just a joy. All these felt very different and fun to explore those personalities,” Correy said.

The directorial duo also had praises to share about their cast, especially Don Lake and Bonnie Hunt, who reprise their roles as Bonnie and Stu Hopps. “With Don and Bonnie, comedic genius. So incredibly smart and hilarious and they forced Trent and I to elevate the material because they were already a couple of steps ahead of us. We had some hilarious sessions,” Trinidad said proudly.

Both Hunt and Lake chimed in, sharing nothing but praises for returning, excited to bring Zootopia to the world of Disney+. “We just explore and have fun, and there’s kind of a built in relationship,” Lake mentioned. “We certainty appreciate it and want to make the most of it!”

Hunt described their new episodes as “intelligent, and kind, and full of humor”, both of the stars hinting that they would love to return and do more for Zootopia+ in the future. Yet, with six episodes, there are still plenty of other stories to tell. This includes the sneaky and shiesty likes of Duke Weasleton.

ZOOTOPIA

Returning to the rule of Duke is the iconic Alan Tudyk, who was given the opportunity to bring a new musical element to his character through a brand new song, “Big Time”. Writers Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson spoke about the song, sharing that they were given the concept directly from acclaimed composer, Michael Giacchino.

Samsel describes “Big Time” as a “Queen inspired genre, leaning into David Bowie’s Starman style”. The song will explore Duke’s quest to reach the big time and imagine a new path for himself. “We had so much fun coming up with the Duke version of all these different kinds of career paths. It was just a blast,” Anderson added.

You can catch all six episodes of Zootopia+ exclusively on Disney+ right now!

Review: Black Panther Wakanda Forever Breaks New Ground

Wakanda Forever

The time has come to return to the kingdom of Wakanda and for the first time, the world will have to take its first steps into the story and the future of the franchise without the help of the legendary Chadwick Boseman. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is here, and the question looming is simple- Will this film be able to carry forward without T’Challa, and what direction will it take in moving the narrative of Black Panther into this latest Marvel phase and beyond?

To put it simply, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is glorious to behold, delivering a beautiful and powerful story with incredible performances, unexpected surprises, all the while carrying on the legacy of Chadwick Boseman with grace and dignity. The film, similar to its predecessor reminds fans and the world of cinema that representation matters; not for the sake of an agenda or to push ideology, but to tell real stories that are relatable to audiences of all backgrounds and experiences. (You can read more about this in our exclusive interview here).

This tale fits right in with the original film in breaking barriers, unleashing a remarkable power that has helped shape this franchise into a beacon of light for the very cultures it highlights, finding new ways to bring these stories to a wider scope and spotlight in the most genuine way possible.

It all boils down to breaking away from the traditional super hero formula in subtle ways, slowing down the pace to allow time to center in on the raw emotions each character is enduring through loss and reshaping their notions of not only their own identities, but how to grapple with their emotions to move forward. Those decisions, heavily weighted, have consequences, and in the end, every single person in Wakanda Forever has to come face to face with themselves and how their own feelings towards this tragedy will help shape what’s to come and how the world is impacted by the change in tide through T’Challa’s passing.

Yet, this is not a new concept, as the lasting impact of grief and loss is a common thread that ties much of the MCU together. Even looking back at the introduction of T’Challa and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, the very struggle all comes center to the loss of his father, the discovery of the lies and death of his uncle, and the fervor and rage that comes from losing those who are most close to you. This carries forward again with the aftermath of the Battle of Wakanda against Thanos, as T’Challa and many others were taken in the snap, only to return after the heroic efforts of the Avengers in Endgame.

Nevertheless, the turmoil and struggle continue to play out in sync in this story, bringing Shuri to the limelight as she and her entire family try to find a way to keep moving without the presence of T’Challa, who was the heart and center of their world. Letitia Wright’s performance speaks volumes, evolving right in front of the audience and bringing newfound depth into an already rich and loveable character.

Shuri, who has always been full of light, acting as a guardian angel for T’Challa, will have to not only learn how to grapple with her own internal grief and loss of self, but try and pick up the pieces in the waves of destruction and chaos that surround her. Wright’s Shuri is a force to be reckoned with, bringing something special to the forefront all the while making room for the rest of her ensemble to shine through.

That spotlight definitely shines brightest for Angela Bassett, who delivers a powerhouse performance worthy of the highest praise and one that rivals the very strength of Vibranium. In light of all that has taken place in Wakanda, Bassett’s Queen Ramonda stands tall and doesn’t back down even in the darkest of times. Leading into this performance, Queen Ramonda’s influence as a supporting character has always had a beautiful part to play in the narrative, but this performance breaks beyond that, elevating Bassett into the leading lady this franchise so rightfully deserves, shattering all expectations and bringing home a truly Oscar worthy performance.

Everything she touches is absolute gold. Giving Bassett the reigns and giving her a chance to lead this film has honestly been one of the best decisions Marvel Studios has ever had, and a true indication of how multifaceted these stories can be.

It’s not just about cool action sequences, cutting edge graphics, or pushing the edge of modern technology, it’s about the heart and soul of the human condition, showcasing the voices that deserve a chance to be heard, and giving way to a message that resonates beyond the decorum of the medium it is presented. Bassett, along with Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira were the perfect choices to bring Wakanda Forever the beating heart needed to push Marvel into new territory. It works beautifully!

Though that isn’t all that can be said, as Wakanda Forever pushes even further with the introduction of Tenoch Huerta as the illusive Namor, bringing a whole world of indigenous culture to life from the shadows, and in the end, acts as a perfect parallel for the Wakandans. Very similarly, Namor’s people have spent generations hidden from the rest of the world, with their own claim to technological and mystical powers that stem from the very precious metal that Wakanda has weaved into their society and identity.

Though, unlike Shuri and the people of Wakanda, Namor does not have the same benevolent desire to coexist with the rest of the world as it evolves from the events of the first film. What this leads to is an incredible matchup of might and power, raising the stakes in a performance that stands up proudly and opens the door for a whole new era of storytelling in the MCU. Though, as this is a spoiler free endeavor, you will just have to see the film for yourself to see what Namor will unleash.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuts exclusively in theaters on November 11th!
