November 21st will mark the 15th anniversary of Enchanted and to celebrate the milestone anniversary, as well as to discuss her triumphant return to the role of Giselle in the upcoming Disney+ sequel, Disenchanted, Amy Adams recently sat down to discuss the longstanding power Giselle has had in her career as well as how it felt when the original film debuted those 15 years ago.
“For me, it was interesting because we were looking at where Giselle would be now and when we leave her in the last movie, there’s been an evolution from the beginning of the movie of Enchanted to who Giselle is at the end of the movie. Sort of taking that taking that evolution of who she might be after spending ten years, but also making sure we keep her grounded in sort of the truth of her feelings but without losing that joy and that naivety and innocence and purity that makes Giselle so special”
Staying true to the spirit of Giselle was essential, and something Adams did not take for granted. “That was sort of where my launching place was, was taking everything I loved about Giselle in the first movie and just getting this opportunity to spin it throughout this one”
She would go on to admit that Giselle has always been a part of her core and a character that felt very natural returning to. “Coming back, I feel like Giselle never left me. We were in the meeting with Disney and I just flipped right back into it and like talking about where I thought she was and I just was realizing that it was the right time. Like, she was in there ready to come out”
Yet, getting to this point was an unknown to Adams, especially looking back at 2007 with the release of the original film. At the time, Adams admitted they weren’t sure fans would be receptive to such a unique story premise.
“With Enchanted, we were taking like a big leap. I knew how much I loved Giselle and how much I believed in her spirit. We just got into it, not really knowing what it would be or if people would get it.”
She would go on to add what it was like experiencing that initial fan reaction, wondering if Enchanted would be as well received as she hoped it would be.
“I do remember feeling really scared the first time I watched it with an audience…It was in London and it was very quiet for the first bit of the movie while people sort of started to understand what they were seeing and then I remember after ‘Happy Working Song’, there was a shift in the energy where the audience started going on the journey with us and it was a really overwhelming feeling for me. It let me know that they understood what we were doing and that they were sort of understanding Giselle’s purity and it was a really wonderful moment.”
Adams knew in that moment that Giselle would leave a lasting impact, and all these years later, it means so much more to bring a new chapter to life and once again, take a leap of faith that the fans will love this new chapter of Giselle’s story.
“It was a very special moment for me. It was really early on in my career too. This movie has meant so much to me in so many ways, so just grateful to get to come back and revisit Giselle at this point in my life.”
Idina Menzel’s voice is one of the most iconic, powerful, and well known in all the land, so it may come as a mystery why Menzel wasn’t given a single note to sing in 2007’s hit film, Enchanted. Yet, that mystery may have just been uncovered almost 15 years to the debut of the original film and more importantly the why behind one of Disney’s most puzzling questions.
With the upcoming release of Disenchanted on Disney+, Menzel sat down and had a chance to speak about her song work for Enchanted with legendary composer, Alan Menken, who like Menzel, is returning for the highly anticipated sequel.
Menken revealed that Menzel was not only meant to sing in the original Enchanted, but had crafted specifically with her in mind. “We had two attempts in the first movie to do that, we just couldn’t get it in. It was timing,” he admitted.
Idina recalled one of the songs, discussing what it was like working with Menken on trying to get Nancy’s song into the film. “We shot one of them and I remember Jenny said ‘this isn’t going in the movie, it’s gonna be on the cutting room floor.’ I was like, what do you mean it’s gonna get cut? She’s like, ‘It’s never gonna make it’
Yet, Menzel admitted that it had to happen to fit with the pacing of the rest of the story despite her musical chops. “It was just superfluous at the time because you (Menken) were trying too hard and I really appreciate that but now you made up for it in so many ways that I’m singing a song that I can barely sing live if I tried”.
Menken once again teams up with legendary songwriter, Stephen Schwartz, crafting all new songs for Disenchanted, that include two songs for Menzel, both of them bringing fans what many would consider 15 years in the making.
“When you have someone like Alan and Stephen writing for you, because they are so incredibly talented, even for character, the way they write melodies and these soaring melodies, it’s kind of their little sign to tell you how to approach it. You don’t even have to think that much because the way they write gives you everything you that you need. To have someone like them write for you, for all of us, it’s such a gift, to have someone take you in,” Menzel exclaimed.
Disenchanted will also give a chance for other returning cast to join in on the musical fun, including Patrick Dempsey’s Robert. Dempsey discussed bringing a new side to Robert and the fun in transforming the character beyond his less-than-enthused attitude towards song and dance from the original film.
Dempsey said it was “great fun with the singing and the dancing. It was a joy! That whole process of going through finding your voice, working with the coach on that. Learning the lyrics and the dance was an extraordinary experience and something I’ve never done before.”
Yet, it was a bit out of his comfort zone as he would go on to admit, nevertheless, something Dempsey was more than willing to take on with enthusiasm and excitement. “It was a great opportunity to play something that was so broad. I don’t get that opportunity and I really loved it. It’s a little bit scary at first but you know it was great, it was a safe environment to work in. It was fun to play and I hope people enjoy that.”
It’s a perfect mix, especially with Menken and Schwartz leading the way with their musical charm. “Rather than writing for any individual actors, Stephen and I, write for the characters and the storyline and take it from there. It so happens that the actors are perfect for this,” Menken said proudly. He, like many returning, feel that Disenchanted will bring the right tune to fans.
“The first Enchanted had the most amazing premise. We start in the world of early Walt Animation and this animated princess has a spell put on her and and is thrown up in Times Square, where’s she’s totally unequipped to deal with what happens and the score kind of grows up with her as she gets to adapt to this world. In the new version, she longs for that world, so we still go back to that,” Menken mentioned.
“They know our voices and they can write for our strengths and then we can really shine and to have that kind of back and forth with composers like the two of them is just, yes,” Menzel added.
With the eve of the release of Disenchanted on Disney+, we got the opportunity to sit down and connect with the cast and creative minds behind the sequel to the ever popular smash, Enchanted, learning more about the new cast of characters, as well as some exciting updates from our returning cast!
Right away, producer, Barry Josephson, revealed the sequel all began with Amy Adams. “Amy really was our starting point of wanting to play Giselle again”, yet, she was just the beginning. Adam Shankman takes the reigns from Kevin Lima as the director of Disenchanted, and Josephson let us know that they struck gold with Shankman when the process started.
“When Adam joined, our development process took us into the stratosphere because he brought with it Richard LaGravenese, who developed the script and really went to another level. It was such a joy to see the script come together and become something joyous”.
The challenge would come in finding an original story that was not only true to the first film, but would bring new layers to Giselle and the world of Arandelle. Shankman described his concept, which became the premise of the film’s new direction.
“I walked in and was talking to Sean Bailey, the president of Disney and he was talking about how the project was sitting there and as we discussed it I said well basically…‘You know Giselle is the step-mother. She’s Morgan’s stepmother!’ and that for me became the absolute jumping off point. I was like, that’s low hanging fruit. This is perfect in terms of a continuation. She has this now developed daughter that doesn’t believe in magic anymore”.
“It was sort of a thrill ride from there,” he added. Yet, both of them agreed that the film meant more than just a return of classic characters. “I wanted to work with Amy for so long because we speak a very similar language. I suddenly thought I want to make a movie not with Amy, but for Amy as well,” Shankman revealed.
Shankman would definitely get his wish, as Adams would not only reprise her role as Giselle, but step into the role of producer, reuniting her original cast alongside some new faces that are sure to bring something fresh and exciting to the story.
Getting the return cast together, it was so fun to get to see everybody just step back into it, that we were so lucky to have everyone come join us. I can’t thank them enough, I’m very appreciative. For our new cast members, I was just so so so pleased to get everybody we have”.
Part of that journey involved discovering Gabriella Baldacchino, who will be making her Disney debut as the teenage Morgan Philip. “I think a dream come true is honestly the best way to put it. When I was little, even growing up, Enchanted was my favorite movie, so being able to join all of these people was surreal to me,” Baldacchino admitted.
Finding the right actress for Morgan was key according to Josephson. “That was our ultimate big question mark before we started was. This is such a strong mother-daughter story, and how do we find the right daughter?”
He would go on to admit with no hesitation that Baldacchino was the perfect choice. “When Gabby read I think for me and Adam and Amy, we just completely realized together, at the same time, but we were all separate, different places. She was the one.”
Shankman would add that “pretty much everybody was our first choice”, which fits right in with the fairy tale magic that is needed to bring a film like Disenchanted to life. Joining in that would be Bridesmaids, The Good Place, and SNL Alumn, Maya Rudolph.
Rudolph will be joining the cast as the wicked, Malvina Monroe, who runs the town of Monroeville, calling all the shots and acting as a foil for Giselle throughout the central conflict and climax of the film.
“Even though I had a chance to sing in things before, it was nothing like this experience and knowing I was going to get to write this Menken and Schwartz song was really, truly, almost like a like a life fulfillment. Like I was training for the marathon I’ve been training for my whole life and that what it was every day”
Coming along for the ride are other sitcom and superstar comedy alums, including The Office star, Oscar Nuñez (Edgar), Yvette Nicole Brown (Rosaleen), and Jayma Mays (Ruby). Brown, who many know already has ties to the magical world of Disney, revealed a special connection to Enchanted and how the story has come full circle with her being cast in the new film.
“My friend Marilyn Sue played the bus driver in the original Enchanted. You know how you’re just happy for somebody and you feel bad in your soul because it’s not you?”, Brown joked.
“Fifteen years later for the call to come my way and to get to be a part of this group…we all had the best time in Ireland. It was just a lovely gathering, a little troupe of us coming together to make a love letter to everyone that loved the original film and I am just so honored to be a part of it”
Mays shared in the excitement, and like many of the new cast, revealed their love for the original really elevating their joy in getting a chance to tell a new story. “I was so excited to join this cast. I was a huge, huge fan of the first film, so when I got this job, I was like, I can retire now. I did it!”
Nuñez also shared some behind the scenes memories, giving fans a glimpse of how much like Giselle Amy Adams truly is. “While we were waiting to shoot, Amy would sing. You (Amy) were so happy just hanging out and you wouldn’t stop singing with a big smile on your face so there was a lot of love there”
We can’t forget our returning favorites though, as both Patrick Dempsey and Idina Menzel shared their thoughts on what’s changed for their characters and what it was like returning to the roles of Robert and Nancy.
“Robert at the very beginning is very much the same. He’s now trying to balance, you know, life between his new baby and his other child and the conflict between the stepmother and that dynamic,” Dempsey explained. Yet, that was only the beginning.
Robert’s journey takes a very chivalrous turn in Disenchanted, and Dempsey couldn’t have been more excited. “Getting into larger than life was completely freeing and really fun. For me it was a fantastic ride. I had a great time where I could work a little bit, do a little sight seeing in Ireland and work on the musical.
Menzel also got a chance to bring something new to Nancy, who unlike her real life musical self, did not have as whimsical and melodic of a debut as she would have expected in the original film. “Mine was a pretty drastic change,” according to Menzel. “I go from this, you know, cynical New York chick and then I jump down a portal, or a manhole and then I come out. It was so much fun for me.”
Coming back as an Andalasian royal did mix things up a bit for her. “The challenge for me…just trying to figure out the balance. How much of my New York accent do I still have coming from Andalasia and how much is this idyllic, romantic, beautiful, perfect place has rubbed off on me?”
The exciting part is Menzel will get a chance to sing in this film, and with it, gets to honor the incredible works of Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz. There are plenty of other new surprises coming when Disenchanted debuts exclusively on Disney+ on November 16th.

Your Disney+ experience is about to become a little more “Wilde” with the debut of Zootopia+ this week, featuring a brand new series of short stories, each featuring familiar characters and scenes that will tie directly into the original Disney Animation Studios hit, Zootopia.
Gazelle’s lyrics, “Try Everything”, definitely come to mind when looking at the new series, with so many new and fun moments coming to fans across the globe. The creative team behind this new show came together recently to discuss what it was like to revisit Zootopia, as well as how the series will help weave together these new stories into the larger narrative for the franchise.
Director, Josie Trinidad, focused on giving the spotlight to some of the fan favorite Zootopia characters that may have not had the most screen time in the original film. Each character in the series get a chance to tell their own story.
“There are so many rich characters, and we sort of wanted to focus on the others, the secondary characters. We felt like they warranted their own episodes. They warranted the spotlight.” In that Trinidad revealed that when coming to choose from this wide array of characters and stories, it was natural to bring forward stories focusing on Stu and Bonnie Hopps, Mr. Big, as well as the infamous and small time crook, Duke Weasleton.
“The characters are so fun, so interesting and Zootopia is like New York City, where everyone has a story and you really want to delve into each character,” Trinidad added.
Fellow director, Trent Correy, revealed that they had worked on multiple variations of the series, each giving an endless amount of possibility and making it a challenge to narrow down to
“I might have had ten different versions, their world is so ripe and some of them were new characters, but a lot of them were ones we have had met…the range is huge and it really gave us the opportunity to tell different stories like Chief Bogo and Clawhauser their friendship and dynamic at the office. It was just a joy. All these felt very different and fun to explore those personalities,” Correy said.
The directorial duo also had praises to share about their cast, especially Don Lake and Bonnie Hunt, who reprise their roles as Bonnie and Stu Hopps. “With Don and Bonnie, comedic genius. So incredibly smart and hilarious and they forced Trent and I to elevate the material because they were already a couple of steps ahead of us. We had some hilarious sessions,” Trinidad said proudly.
Both Hunt and Lake chimed in, sharing nothing but praises for returning, excited to bring Zootopia to the world of Disney+. “We just explore and have fun, and there’s kind of a built in relationship,” Lake mentioned. “We certainty appreciate it and want to make the most of it!”
Hunt described their new episodes as “intelligent, and kind, and full of humor”, both of the stars hinting that they would love to return and do more for Zootopia+ in the future. Yet, with six episodes, there are still plenty of other stories to tell. This includes the sneaky and shiesty likes of Duke Weasleton.
Returning to the rule of Duke is the iconic Alan Tudyk, who was given the opportunity to bring a new musical element to his character through a brand new song, “Big Time”. Writers Elyssa Samsel and Kate Anderson spoke about the song, sharing that they were given the concept directly from acclaimed composer, Michael Giacchino.
Samsel describes “Big Time” as a “Queen inspired genre, leaning into David Bowie’s Starman style”. The song will explore Duke’s quest to reach the big time and imagine a new path for himself. “We had so much fun coming up with the Duke version of all these different kinds of career paths. It was just a blast,” Anderson added.
You can catch all six episodes of Zootopia+ exclusively on Disney+ right now!
The time has come to return to the kingdom of Wakanda and for the first time, the world will have to take its first steps into the story and the future of the franchise without the help of the legendary Chadwick Boseman. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is here, and the question looming is simple- Will this film be able to carry forward without T’Challa, and what direction will it take in moving the narrative of Black Panther into this latest Marvel phase and beyond?
To put it simply, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is glorious to behold, delivering a beautiful and powerful story with incredible performances, unexpected surprises, all the while carrying on the legacy of Chadwick Boseman with grace and dignity. The film, similar to its predecessor reminds fans and the world of cinema that representation matters; not for the sake of an agenda or to push ideology, but to tell real stories that are relatable to audiences of all backgrounds and experiences. (You can read more about this in our exclusive interview here).
This tale fits right in with the original film in breaking barriers, unleashing a remarkable power that has helped shape this franchise into a beacon of light for the very cultures it highlights, finding new ways to bring these stories to a wider scope and spotlight in the most genuine way possible.
It all boils down to breaking away from the traditional super hero formula in subtle ways, slowing down the pace to allow time to center in on the raw emotions each character is enduring through loss and reshaping their notions of not only their own identities, but how to grapple with their emotions to move forward. Those decisions, heavily weighted, have consequences, and in the end, every single person in Wakanda Forever has to come face to face with themselves and how their own feelings towards this tragedy will help shape what’s to come and how the world is impacted by the change in tide through T’Challa’s passing.
Yet, this is not a new concept, as the lasting impact of grief and loss is a common thread that ties much of the MCU together. Even looking back at the introduction of T’Challa and Black Panther in Captain America: Civil War, the very struggle all comes center to the loss of his father, the discovery of the lies and death of his uncle, and the fervor and rage that comes from losing those who are most close to you. This carries forward again with the aftermath of the Battle of Wakanda against Thanos, as T’Challa and many others were taken in the snap, only to return after the heroic efforts of the Avengers in Endgame.
Nevertheless, the turmoil and struggle continue to play out in sync in this story, bringing Shuri to the limelight as she and her entire family try to find a way to keep moving without the presence of T’Challa, who was the heart and center of their world. Letitia Wright’s performance speaks volumes, evolving right in front of the audience and bringing newfound depth into an already rich and loveable character.
Shuri, who has always been full of light, acting as a guardian angel for T’Challa, will have to not only learn how to grapple with her own internal grief and loss of self, but try and pick up the pieces in the waves of destruction and chaos that surround her. Wright’s Shuri is a force to be reckoned with, bringing something special to the forefront all the while making room for the rest of her ensemble to shine through.
That spotlight definitely shines brightest for Angela Bassett, who delivers a powerhouse performance worthy of the highest praise and one that rivals the very strength of Vibranium. In light of all that has taken place in Wakanda, Bassett’s Queen Ramonda stands tall and doesn’t back down even in the darkest of times. Leading into this performance, Queen Ramonda’s influence as a supporting character has always had a beautiful part to play in the narrative, but this performance breaks beyond that, elevating Bassett into the leading lady this franchise so rightfully deserves, shattering all expectations and bringing home a truly Oscar worthy performance.
Everything she touches is absolute gold. Giving Bassett the reigns and giving her a chance to lead this film has honestly been one of the best decisions Marvel Studios has ever had, and a true indication of how multifaceted these stories can be.
It’s not just about cool action sequences, cutting edge graphics, or pushing the edge of modern technology, it’s about the heart and soul of the human condition, showcasing the voices that deserve a chance to be heard, and giving way to a message that resonates beyond the decorum of the medium it is presented. Bassett, along with Wright, Lupita Nyong’o, and Danai Gurira were the perfect choices to bring Wakanda Forever the beating heart needed to push Marvel into new territory. It works beautifully!
Though that isn’t all that can be said, as Wakanda Forever pushes even further with the introduction of Tenoch Huerta as the illusive Namor, bringing a whole world of indigenous culture to life from the shadows, and in the end, acts as a perfect parallel for the Wakandans. Very similarly, Namor’s people have spent generations hidden from the rest of the world, with their own claim to technological and mystical powers that stem from the very precious metal that Wakanda has weaved into their society and identity.
Though, unlike Shuri and the people of Wakanda, Namor does not have the same benevolent desire to coexist with the rest of the world as it evolves from the events of the first film. What this leads to is an incredible matchup of might and power, raising the stakes in a performance that stands up proudly and opens the door for a whole new era of storytelling in the MCU. Though, as this is a spoiler free endeavor, you will just have to see the film for yourself to see what Namor will unleash.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever debuts exclusively in theaters on November 11th!
“A Few Good Men” commands a solid salute to the meticulous and prestigious legacy of proflic playwright Aaron Sorkin. La Mirada for the Performing Arts is fortunate to craft a production that takes the best parts of the original Broadway run and the 1992 film version as the writer articulated his writing skills from both experiences. The pace is quick with the steady close-knit talking characters and grasping chemistry between actors that draws the audience into the powerful courtroom drama.
Those who are only familiar with the movie will have a different experience with the live stageplay. The drama is accentuated to be read and heard clearly across the open space and feeds off the audience reaction bouncing from playful humor to intense moments of awe. The show brings a handful of set-ups and payoffs that doesn’t ring the same as it would on a film medium. A couple of men drinking beer bottles from a baby stroller plays true for an audience who frequent the local theme parks. A scene between the colonel and the doctor is a setup that gives a different payoff in the movie version.
Fans of the film will get a different take upon experiencing the show with live actors and a live audience. The audience is transported and becomes a part of the drama from beginning to end.
From Academy-Award winning writer and renowned playwright Aaron Sorkin (“The West Wing” and To Kill A Mockingbird), this Broadway hit about the trial of two Marines for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay sizzles on stage. The Navy lawyer, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea bargain and a cover-up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, the lawyer eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in so doing, puts the military mentality and the Marine code of honor on trial.
The audition process narrowed down from 500 submissions into a final cast of 18. Doug Harris will no doubthgly be compared to actor Tom Cruise based on the film version for the character of Lt. j.g. Daniel A. Kaffee. But with Harris’ expressive presence, I particularly saw him more as Jim Carrey playing a lawyer in the movie “Liar Liar” with the dramatic gravitas of more serious roles. Leanne Antonio puts her own passionate stamp on strongly opinionated and eager Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway always on her feet to get the work done.
Andy Umberger makes an intimidating and imposing Col. Nathan Jessep who you do not want to mess around with. 2020 Ovation Award recipient for Best Actress Sara King as by the book Lt. Jack Ross. King expertly demonstrates how her character can be played beyond traditionally associated with a man.
This production will not attract those more familiar with grand musical spectacles. This show asks for the audience’s undivided attention to not only the drama of a court martial hearing, but also the drama that sets up before and takes place outside the court room. Although the main stage is solely set up as a court room, the upper level of the back reveals the Guantanamo Bay post and different portions of the stage split up as different locations with re-positions of tables and chairs.
The sounds and music undertones also contribute to separating time and space between scenes. This show will command the attention of those who grew alongside such court dramas as “Matlock” and “Diagnosis: Murder”. This show is not to be missed if you love stageplay court dramas like “12 Angry Men”
“A Few Good Men” is ready for final inspection from a few good audience members. Playing on select dates now until November 20 at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts. Interestingly enough, the show runs appropriately during elections and a veterans holiday weekend.
Be aware the show is recommended for a mature audience. The show includes adult language, the portrayal of violence, suicide, and gun shot sound effects. For more information, visit www.lamiradatheatre.com
