Cemetery Lane Rises From The Grave Oct. 19-30

Cemetery Lane

The Cemetery Lane trick-r-treat experience returns to Heritage Square Museum in Los Angeles for select dates between October 19-30, 2022. Costumed visitors of all ages will make their way from home to home in the safely gated ‘neighborhood’ of Heritage Square Museum’s Victorian manors, which have been reimagined into a Halloween night from an era when the Addams Family, the Munsters and residents of the Twilight Zone joined millions of 1950’s and 1960’s American families in their homes each week.

“This year, guests will step back into the ‘50s and ‘60s when pop culture became obsessed with monster movies, as well as fascinated with the ‘horror hosts’ who permeated television airwaves late at night,” said David Markland, event Creator and Co-producer.

Cemetery Lane

The mid-century theme of this year’s Cemetery Lane will transport guests young and old to a time when horror comics and magazines like Famous Monsters of Filmland flew off the shelves, and the real-life fears generated by the Cold War caused many a nightmare.

After a completely sold out event for its first year in 2021, Cemetery Lane has expanded to two weekends, with hourly timed ticketing including daylight hours on Saturdays and Sundays so the younger ghouls and boils will have plenty of time to fill their candy buckets before darkness falls and the eeriness intensifies in the neighborhood of Cemetery Lane.

Guests should expect a 45-minute to one hour immersive experience, including 13 trick-r-treat stops, character interactions, photo-ops, a selection of spooky vendors to shop from, and a curated selection of food trucks, along with other surprises.

Cemetery Lane

Cemetery Lane is resurrected by David Markland (Co-Founder and Executive Director of Midsummer Scream) and Claire Dunlap (Co-Founder/Supervising Producer of Midsummer Scream and Co-Creator/Producer of Spooky Swap Meet), with decor and effects provided by Jeff Schiefelbein (creator of Sinister Pointe Haunted Attraction).

Tickets go on sale Saturday, August 27 at 9 a.m PST. Admission cost before 6 p.m. is $27 and from 6 p.m on is $32. Toddlers two years and under, not trick-or-treating, are admitted for free.

Event entry is located at 3515 Pasadena Avenue, Los Angeles, 90031. Absolutely no parking or entry is available for Cemetery Lane from Homer Street.

Artist Lance Inkwell (“Cuphead”) designed Cemetery Lane’s 2022 premium trick-r-treat bag featuring Heritage Square’s Valley Knudsen House, available for purchase with tickets!

Press Conference Highlights: “Andor”

Andor

Premiering exclusively on Disney+ September 21st, is Andor–the prequel to Rogue One, which is itself the prequel to A New Hope.

Andor

Set five years prior to the events of Rogue One, Andor follows the path of Cassian Andor as circumstances mold him into the consummate spy/warrior the Rebellion desperately needs.  The first season of twelve episodes covers the first year of the interval, and the second season of twelve will finish the rest of the four years.

Andor

To discuss the process of revisiting the galaxy of Star Wars during a time of fomenting rebellion, Andor filmmakers Diego Luna (“Cassian Andor” and Executive Producer,) Genevieve O’Reilly (“Mon Mothma,”) Kyle Soller (“Syril Karn,”) Denise Gough (“Dedra Meero,”) Adria Arjona (“Bix Caleen,”) and Tony Gilroy(Executive Producer / Writer / Showrunner) came together for a virtual press conference.

Andor Press Conference highlights:

On starting up the project:

Gilroy:  “I think the main idea, is we have a character in Rogue One, and we know where he ends up and we know how accomplished and complicated he is.  The idea that we can do a story that takes him literally from his childhood origins and walk him through a five-year history of an odyssey that takes him to that place, during a revolution, during a moment in history in a place where huge events are happening and real people are being crushed by it–the fact that we could follow somebody as an example of a revolution all the way through to the end, that was the walk-in for me.”

On revisiting old characters:

Luna:  “First of all, just the chance to be back working with this family, getting to do more stuff with Tony, who is someone I admire, and I love his company…collaborating with him is amazing.  So just being back felt great.

“But I think Rogue One is a film about an event, you know?  You don’t get to know those characters.  You don’t get to understand exactly where they come from, what needed to happen.  For me, it’s quite relevant today to tell the story of what needs to happen for a revolutionary to emerge, to exist, to come to life, you know.  What gives meaning in the life of someone to be willing to sacrifice everything for a cause?  What needs to happen?  That journey matters to me.  The character says stuff that haunts me in Rogue One.  You know that he started to fight since he was six years old.  What does that mean, exactly?  You know, why a six-year-old would miss his childhood and start a fight?  That, to me, is really interesting to know.  He talks about a dark past.  He talks about doing terrible stuff for the Rebellion.  What is he referring to?  I think that story matters.  That story is interesting.  And there is a lot of material there for us to play.  So I was really excited to be able to go into that journey and give those answers you know?”

PGM 079553 R

O’Reilly:  “You know…we’ve met Mon Mothma before in different iterations, in different versions of the Star Wars storytelling.  And each time we’ve met her, we’ve met this kind of composed, regal, dignified woman who often…like with Cassian in Rogue One, she is to send people out on a mission.

“I think what’s extraordinary about how Tony has written Andor and where he has chosen to begin this story is so very different to where we find Mon Mothma in Rogue One.  She is still that very dignified senator, but for the first time, we get to see the woman behind the role.  We get to see a private face of Mon Mothma.  We get to flesh out not just the senator, not just the would-be leader of a Rebel Alliance, but also the woman.

“We meet a woman steeped in Empire, navigating a very male-dominated Empire with a very powerful Emperor Palpatine at the top of it.  Previously, in Rogue One or at other times, we’ve seen her surrounded by…people with different opinions but with like-minded Rebels.

“We find her in Andor very alone, living in a world of orthodoxy and construct.  We see a woman who has had to navigate her ideals and her beliefs within systems of oppression, and so, we find her in a place we’ve never seen her before.  We find her in a bit of a gilded cage, and so, what I’m excited for, is for us to travel that story with her.”

Disney+

On introducing new characters:

Arjona:  “Well, I liked a lot of things about Bix.  I think she’s fearless.  She’s bold, yet really deep inside, she’s incredibly loyal and compassionate and cares a little too much for the people around her, and I think that’s sometimes at her own detriment.  I think this boldness and powerful thing is sort of like a facade that she puts on for…  She almost puts that as a show.  But deep down, she cares deeply about the people around her, and I think that’s the part that I love the most about Bix.”

Andor

Gough:  “So Dedra is an ISP officer.  When we meet her, she’s at the kind of low end of the ladder.  She’s incredibly ambitious and meticulous.  What I love about playing her is that, you know, she’s in this very male-dominated world and she’s seeing around her the way that people are missing what she can see is happening.

“We’ve been talking a lot about this today, both about Dedra and Syril and how they come into this world–they’re sort of outsiders within the ISB, so yes, she’s clawing her way up the ladder.  I love portraying the effect that power just has on a person, like the danger of that pursuit of power and control, regardless of gender.

“I mean, I do kind of love that you’re thinking ‘oh, go girl!’  And then you remember, she’s in a fascist organization.”

Andor

Soller:  “Well, what attracted me to the role was Tony’s writing.  He had created a character that was really three-dimensional and had a big question mark over him…he could kind of go either way.  He could go into the Empire.  He could go into the Rebel Alliance.  He’s got a lot of gray areas, and he came from a place of such lack and such pain in his home life, that he’s trying to fill this void within himself through the fascist, corporate, bureaucratic structure, where he finds order.  He finds a place to be seen if he can supersede his station and climb those ranks.”

Andor

On what Cassian represents:

Luna:  “How far can someone be from learning he could be a tool of change?  How far can you be from that and still find your way into acknowledging that you are capable of big stuff, you know?  I think it was that:  It was like, how far can we find Cassian?  You see the guy in the first episode and you don’t see any possibility of that happening, you know.  That, to me, gives me hope in the world we live in.

“If that’s possible, anyone can do something.  We can all find what we are capable of and it’s about the reference, it’s about what we find and the people we meet in our journey.  I always thought of him as a character that has been forced to move therefore he brings a pain that he’s carrying that is making him very cynical about life, you know.

“Exploring that person and then finding a way to get the clarity of someone that suddenly starts believing, that goes through a process of acknowledging that articulating something in community can give you enough strength to be useful and to bring change, you know.  I thought that story matters too much.

It’s a story I would like to tell to my kids, to my friends.  It’s a story I would like to see as an audience.  Again, that’s why we have to be so real because it doesn’t matter that we pretend to be in a galaxy far, far away.  This story matters today in the world we live in, you know.  Otherwise, I wouldn’t care and I always saw this potential in this story.”

Andor

On getting back into the saddle:

Luna:  “Oof, yeah…probably this was like the first or second day that I arrived to Pinewood at the very beginning when we were in preproduction, and I go to the stunts, where they have an amazing facility and stuff for you to climb and to jump and to, you know, fall and roll.

“And I go like, ‘Let’s do a very simple one.  I need to get back into this.’  And I pretend I was 10 years younger, you know, than what I had to play in this show.  And the next morning, I was like, shit, I’m gonna have to quit this job.  I can’t handle this anymore.  Like every part of my body ached, and I felt like I went into a battle, and it was just the first rehearsal, you know?  And I was talking to my family, saying I don’t know if I’m gonna be able to do this.  No one’s gonna believe, I mean, I’m gonna have to spend the first two months in a chair, you know?

“Clearly, time passed, and gladly, there was a fantastic stuntman that helped me and managed to do all the stuff I can’t do anymore.”

Andor

On diversity and representation in casting:

Luna:  “I think the industry is reacting to some things happening out there, you know?  We’re supposed to be a mirror for audiences to be able to see themselves, and I think with the platforms and these new ways to connect with audiences, I think audiences are sending the right messages.  And the industry is reacting.  I think when you buy a ticket, you send a message.  When you don’t buy it, you also send a message.  When you click, you send a message.  When you don’t, you send a message.  And the industry will respond to that and it’s responding.

“I think it makes sense if we’re talking about a galaxy where there are so many planets that people come from different places.  And if we’re talking about refugees, they come from different places and they gather in one place and they sound different, they look different.  That diversity, I mean, it’s what makes this, the reality I live in, very rich, you know?  So I mean, I celebrate that the stories we see reflect on that.”

Andor

On how Andor stands out from the rest of Star Wars:

Luna:  “Well, first of all, this one is written by Tony Gilroy, which makes it very special and I’ll tell you why:  Tony’s not a writer that lives in the language of right and wrong, you know?  Or like black and white.  He spends of his time in the complexity of the gray areas.  In the contradictions of characters.  That’s where I think this real thing comes out of, because it’s full of that experience of just being someone trying to live your life and having to make choices.

“And this is a show about people, about real people, you know?  It’s very dark times in the galaxy, there are no Jedis around, these people having to articulate a reaction to oppression and it’s the most grounded kind of Star Wars you’ll get.  It is a show about us, it is a show about these people finding the strength to come up with a reaction, to change and bring change to their reality.  It’s very inspiring, I think.  It’s huge, it’s big as Tony says.  It’s adventure and action at its best, what you expect from Star Wars, but then it goes very intimate and it’s very subtle and it takes time to understand each character and it has time for each storyline.

“I just think it’s very rich, it’s powerful, and people are gonna like it hopefully.”

Lucasfilm’s Andor will debut exclusively on Disney+ on September 21, 2022.

The series’ episodes are directed by Steve Purcell (Eps 1, 2, 8), Bobby Podesta (Eps 5, 6, 9) and Brian Fee (Eps 3, 4, 7). Composer Jake Monaco created the score for all nine episodes.

“Growing Up”
Created by Brie Larson and Culture.House, “Growing Up” is an innovative hybrid docu-series that explores the challenges, triumphs, and complexities of adolescence through ten compelling coming of age stories. From Disney Branded Television, the series uses narrative, experimental, and documentary filmmaking to follow one casted individual, ages 18-22, as they tell their story. They represent a wide range of lived experiences, giving audiences emotionally powerful narratives that offer an engaging look at teenage-hood and the diverse social, familial, and internal obstacles young people face on their path to self-discovery and acceptance.

Each 30-minute episode features one young person, or “hero,” and their experience growing up. Each episode is anchored by a deeply personal interview that allows our heroes to walk us through their childhood and teenage years. Alongside these interviews, creative cinematic reenactments help bring their major inflection points to life.

“Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory”
The face of a new generation of aspirational adventurers and natural history filmmakers, 29-year-old National Geographic Explorer Bertie Gregory takes viewers on epic and nail-biting journeys that push into the most spectacular and secretive corners of our wild world. Armed with leading-edge film technology, the Disney+ original series “Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory,” from National Geographic, breaks the mold of the traditional natural history program by telling extraordinary, real-life animal stories and taking viewers with him for every beat of the action.

For weeks at a time, the charismatic BAFTA Award-winning cinematographer immerses himself into the animals’ lives to capture the untold stories of iconic creatures living in some of the harshest environments on our planet. This season, we will see Bertie braving the icy worlds of Antarctica in search of the biggest gathering of whales ever filmed and coming face-to-face with specialist buffalo-hunting lions in Zambia. In this multipart adventure series, he will take audiences on an ambitious odyssey across the globe, showcasing the natural world at a time when it faces its greatest challenges.

The awards ceremony is just one of the many spectacular events fans can enjoy during the three-day D23 Expo.

The 2022 Disney Legends Award honorees (listed alphabetically) are:

Anthony Anderson grew up in Los Angeles. Haunt O’ Ween LA Returns To Southern Cal – Bigger and Spookier

Haunt O' Ween

The Experiential Supply Co., an innovative experiential productions and attractions company that drives high profile viral destination experiences, and Fever, the global entertainment discovery platform, today announced the return of their groundbreaking, one-of-a-kind Halloween experience: Haunt O’ Ween LA. The fully immersive spooktacular event will take place September 30th-October 31st, 2022 at 6100 Topanga Canyon Blvd. in Woodland Hills, California. Hundreds of thousands of guests are expected to enjoy over 200,000 square feet of the most over-the-top, spooky fun, and authentic Halloween environments in the entire country. The state-of-the-art event also is expanding nationally this season with a new New Jersey location.

All Hallows Eve, by its very nature and origin, has always been communal – bringing people together for the shared escapade of turning fear into fun. Though the past two years have put a wrinkle in that, Haunt O’ Ween’s epic concept is one of the first in the country to put the entire holiday on display in one place – in one very vast and unique format.

Comprised of nine distinctive and wholly immersive worlds, Haunt O’ Ween LA lets guests adventure through the massive grounds with thousands of photo ops, over 25 live character performers that they can engage and interact with, face painting, rides, games, trick-or-treating, dancing, and more. Additionally, there is no time limit, so guests are welcome to stay for hours and enjoy all the ghoulish mayhem.

New attractions for 2022 include: Dance Domes in Beyond The Grave Rave, more rides, games, and even more candy. The organizers have spent almost $1,000,000 on candy this year – all to trick and treat the attendees. Live music, stunt performances, and pumpkin carving will also thrill guests this year.

“We’ve worked very hard this year to put on the country’s largest and most magical Halloween experience for all ages. Over 200,000 square feet of immersive thematics flooded with interactivity, all built on the foundation of Halloween – trick-or-treating, pumpkins, costumes, and spooky fun,” said Jasen Smith, Experiential Supply Founder & Chief Experience Officer. “We cannot wait to welcome thousands of families in the Southern Cal and New Jersey area this year to our massive creation. Make sure to bring your sweet tooth this year!”

Experiential Supply was born in the entertainment industry, putting on large scale experiences for film studios in Hollywood. From themed interactive screenings to multimillion-dollar micro theme parks to promote theatrical releases, the events were always free to attend and promotional in nature. Once the pandemic hit, the company began creating their own experiences – Haunt O’ Ween LA was born in October 2020. The original experience was designed as a drive-thru to make sure kids could still trick or treat. Cars would drive from house to house (that were built by the company) and candy was quite literally dumped into their cars. Similarly crafted events are their Christmas Wonderland and Sugar Rush – a candy-inspired Wonka-like world.

In 2021, Haunt O’ Ween LA transformed into an in-person format, focusing on the engaging nature of Halloween and immersing guests in a myriad of activities. Over 100,000 attendees received over 3,000,000 pieces of candy.

“This is about families having a safe and incredibly fun place to enjoy the holiday and there’s just nothing like it.” adds Smith.

There will be plenty of food and beverages available so that families can enjoy a full night out. Past sponsorships include FX – What We Do in The Shadows, Warner Bros. Pictures The Witches, KiwiCo, Happy Dad Hard Seltzer, Malibu Wines, and The Addams Family 2.

The Haunt O’ Ween LA experience is brought to you by Experiential Supply and Fever, two experts in their fields. Combining their decades of experience, the companies have partnered to curate this innovative production while they continue to conquer and elevate the immersive space together.

One of the big events of the weekend was the insanely popular New Crunchy City Music Fest which went on throughout all three days and provided high-energy performances from rock and J Pop artists like SiM, ATARASHII GAKKO! and Burnout Syndromes.

For people seeking a more interactive experience, there was also a Super Arcade that featured all-day gaming, both video and tabletop, and a manga library which provided a quiet place for people to read and decompress from all the excitement.

As usual however, the highlight of the expo was the Theater District, which played host to anime premieres and over 80 panel presentations.

In Anime Insiders, a group of reporters on the anime beat came together to discuss some of the trends and issues significant to the current times.  One of the biggest new topics they cover is VTubers–people who live-stream shows behind an anime avatar.  This is a concept that really took off during the pandemic years, as people at home searched online for things to entertain them and make the world seem less bleak.  They also discussed the problem of live-action adaptations that are so frequently disappointing from both critical and financial standpoints and felt that the people who raced to put them out often had no knowledge of the field and were just looking to quickly monetize something.  They did have hope that as anime has become more popular, the people involved with future adaptations will approach them from a standpoint of genuine respect for them and pointed to Speed Racer and Alita as examples of they enjoyed.

As for upcoming shows, the whole panel was very enthusiastic about the upcoming Chainsaw Man, streaming on Crunchyroll in October.

Later in the weekend, Chainsaw Man had a chance to display its drawing power as a panel with MAPPA CEO/Producer Manabu Otsuka and MAPPA Executive director and Rights Management Director Makoto Kimura filled three rooms of fans excited to learn more about the upcoming show.

Along with discussing how enthusiastic the whole MAPPA team is about the project, the panelists brought a video from Chainsaw Man manga editor Shiehi Lin, who expressed how much the creator, Tatsuki Fujimoto, enjoyed the trailer that came out that weekend: “There was a lot of blood and I loved it!”

Both Aniplex of America and Crunchyroll had Industry panels where they ran through their large stable of current and coming soon shows at breakneck speed.  From Aniplex, some of their featured shows were Lycoris Recoil, Engage Kiss, and Demon Slayer, Swordsmith Village Arc.

From Crunchyroll, the highlight shows included Fuuto PI, Mob Psycho 100 III, and Jujutsu Kaiden 0, which actually premiered during the expo.

One of the painful parts of any convention is trying to navigate a schedule that seemingly always puts everything you want to see at the same time.  Of the several premieres during the weekend, I was able to catch two of them–Shinobi no Ittoki and Kaina of the Great Snow Sea World.

Shinobi no Ittoki follows Ittoki Sakuraba, a completely normal boy, who finds out after a hectic night of near-assassination that he is a pivotal point in the war between two ninja clans, and must become a master of ninja skills to have any hope of survival.  I thought the first episode they showed us was pretty funny, and seiyuu Ryouta Oosaka does a fun job as the completely bewildered and out-of-his-depth Ittoki who has to confront not only certain death but the fact that everything he thought he knew about ninjas is wrong.  Catch this show when it starts streaming on Crunchyroll October 4th.

The first four episodes of Kaina of the Great Snow Sea in contrast, were not particularly funny but did a lot of heavy lifting as far as world-building is considered.  Kaina is a young adult in a small group of elderly folks who, we learn, are the last remaining people living up in the sky on what is known as “the canopy,” which may or may not turn out to be a metaphor for the ozone layer.  Down below, war is brewing between different countries in an environment that is in both perpetual winter and a state of drought, all of which may be tied to the poor health of the enormous trees that span the two surfaces.  The setup seems interesting and likely to be a cautionary tale about climate change, but the characters, at least in the few episodes I saw, didn’t seem particularly groundbreaking in personality or design.  We’ll have to wait until its streaming debut in January 2023 to see how it develops.

In keeping with the new VTuber phenomenon, another large part of Crunchyroll Expo was the holoMeet Experience Zone, in which there were living photo opportunities featuring 24 prominent VTubers, and the holoMeet Showcase Theater where hololive production talent had made exclusive presentations just for convention attendees.

As a whole, Crunchyroll Expo continues to be one of the most well-run conventions on my annual slate.  The fact that it’s generally a smaller convention than behemoths like SDCC helps to make it a much more chill experience.  I was impressed that out of all the events I’ve been to this year, this one had the highest rate of mask compliance with almost everyone I saw wearing them correctly–likely a contributing factor to this also being the only event I’ve been to this year where I didn’t get a COVID exposure warning afterward.

Despite having over 60 guests, programming still felt a little light, as you might expect for this first year back for everyone.  The majority of the panels with overseas talent were pre-recorded videos which was definitely a safer situation for them, but had the feel of the virtual conventions we’ve gotten a taste of these past two years.  There is something about seeing live guests that really can’t be replicated through video, as their panels with IRL guests from Oddtaxi and Spy x Family demonstrated.

For people interested in going to an anime convention with a more intimate/less crowded feel than the large and mostly mask-avoidant ones we’ve had earlier this year, I can strongly recommend Crunchyroll Expo.  I still have hope that as time goes by more of the programming from past years will return, such as the all-day anime viewing rooms and the Thursday night pre-convention reception, but this year was a nice step back towards business as usual, that felt safe and provided a lot of interesting content.

Folks interested in attending Crunchyroll Expo next year, August 4-6, 2023, should sign up for the newsletter at http://CrunchyrollExpo.com and keep an eye open on the website for information about ticket sales.

Knott's Scary Farm

Myths of the terrifying horrors that lurk within the cave have often been whispered but never confirmed.  Did the crew meet their demise at the hand of vicious creatures that live within the cave? Knott's Scary Farm

Escape the dark entities before their deadly force eliminates all living forms aboard the station. There’s nowhere to escape when time is running out!

Returning Scare Zones

Knott’s Scary Farm is far more than a collection of haunted attractions. Every night monsters spill out onto the streets and turn theme park midways into murderous scare zones. From the world-famous Ghost Town Streets to the Boardwalk area filled with evil clowns, there’s nowhere to hide in Knott’s Scary Farm.

Knott's Scary Farm

Step back into the dark decadence of a by-gone era as the scare zone The Gore-ing 20’s terrorizes even the bravest and most brutal souls. Here gangsters run illicit hooch for the ghostly revelers as the otherworldly musicians play the music of the damned. Tell the Bouncer the secret password, and you’ll have the time of your life for as long as it lasts.

Ghost Town Streets is the original and largest, most terrifying scare zone that started it all. Bands of half-human, half-animal monsters prowl the streets and inhabit the fog, and beware the notoriously stunning sliders, who lunge from fog-filled corners of the land.

On the Boardwalk, deviant clowns crave your undying attention in the CARNEVIL scare zone.

Saddle up for one final ride through the bramble filled passageways of The Hollow scare zone. The treacherous Witches of the Hollow, and their armies of creatures have risen once again to battle with the Witch Hunter.

The Lake underneath Silver Bullet recedes to reveal the Forsaken Lake scare zone, where gothic creatures ravaged by the dark and murky waters wander from their crypts preying on unsuspecting visitors, looking for victims to drag back to their watery graves.
