Plaza Point

Plaza Point is the all-new holiday store on Main Street, U.S.A. in Disneyland park, and it opens today (Thursday, October 21) at the Disneyland Resort! For those who enjoy every aspect of the holidays, this new store is a must-visit location while they are in Disneyland park, as it is a home for the holidays all year long!

Inside Plaza Point, guests will find fun seasonal items from ornaments to home décor, collectibles, and more! And, throughout the year, the store will change seasonally to showcase additional holidays as well, such as Lunar New Year, Easter, and Halloween, to name a few.

Plaza Point

That means guests will want to make a stop in Plaza Point each time they visit to not only see the latest décor but also shop the current seasonal merchandise!

One favorite item in the new holiday store are the ornaments that guests can get personalized, which also serve as great holiday gifts! It’s so fun watching the artistry in action as cast members hand paint a name on each ornament. And the ornament personalization will be available for purchase year-round.

Plaza Point

Want to know a little bit more about the story of Plaza Point? This welcoming space is brought to guests by the store proprietress, named Miss Evelyn Toro. She is a world traveler, collecting unique pieces of holiday décor as she goes, and brings the treasured items back to display in her store. The warm, wood-paneled store fits perfectly in the Victorian era of Main Street, U.S.A.

Here to tell you more about the story of Plaza Point is Disney Imagineer Kim Irvine, who served as Executive Creative Director on this new holiday store.

We hope you get a chance to visit the all-new Plaza Point during your next visit to Disneyland park!

Theatre Review: Sh-boom: Life Could Be a Dream

Sh-boom

Laguna Playhouse resumes its postponed 100-year celebration with the season debut of Sh-boom: Life Could be a Dream, written and created by Roger Bean.  Mr. Bean may be best known for creating The Marvelous Wonderettes. Denny and the Dreamers perform favorite songs from the ’50s and ’60s from the comfort of Denny’s basement of his mother’s house.

Denny and the gang want to enter a radio contest to realize their dreams of making it to the big time.  The ’60s hits say it all: “Fools Fall in Love,” “Runaround Sue,” “Earth Angel,” “I Only Have Eyes For You,” “Unchained Melody,” “Lonely Teardrops,” “Do You Love Me?” and more.

The jukebox musical will appeal mostly to an audience that is generally 50 years of age and up. The performers put a lot of heart on stage. But the paper-thin story and characters merely are there to faintly glue and carry the songs together in a small but presentable showcase of talent. It’s a proven yet predictable serving of the 1950s and 1960’s Americana nostalgia.

A youthful singing group dreams of becoming famous singers, they seek out a sponsor, conflicted with a new member of the group, a sole female eye-candy, someone drops out but returns before the show end with enough time to get the girl. The show ends with a big radio contest, but there are no other competitors and no real resolution to wrap everything up.

The show mainly wants to retain a good-feel atmosphere for the baby boomer generation. Although not crude, the real star is the toe-tapping musical performances highlighted by the short cast list. This is actually quite well situated given the current world event. The characters of Denny, Wally, and Eugene play as youthful but overexaggerated and eager to perform for an audience.

The greaser mechanic Duke and beautiful sponsor’s daughter Lois play more straight for balance and contrast to the boys. The cast is no stranger to the stage and boasts an impressive resume from Singin’ in the Rain, Hello Dolly!, Anything Goes, Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia, and more.

Olaf Presents

Olaf steps into the spotlight and goes from snowman to showman as he takes on the roles of producer, actor, costumer, and set builder for his unique “retelling” of five favorite Disney animated tales in “Olaf Presents,” a series of new animated shorts from Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Olaf

The charismatic and versatile Olaf demonstrates his theatrical flair, taking on such iconic roles as a mermaid, a genie, a lion king (and most of the parts in between), as he entertains Arendelle with his delightful abbreviated versions of these beloved tales. Josh Gad returns to voice Olaf with veteran Disney animator Hyrum Osmond directing and Jennifer Newfield producing.

“Hawkeye” on Disney+ Launches with Two Episodes on Nov 24

hawkeye

Subsequent episodes will launch each week on Wednesday. Check out a new 60-second spot that offers fans a glimpse of Clint Barton and fellow archer Kate Bishop in action.

Marvel Studios’ “Hawkeye” is an original new series set in post-blip New York City where former Avenger Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) has a seemingly simple mission: get back to his family for Christmas.

But when a threat from his past shows up, Hawkeye reluctantly teams up with Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), a 22-year-old skilled archer and his biggest fan, to unravel a criminal conspiracy.

The series also features Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James, and newcomer Alaqua Cox as Maya Lopez.

Helmed by Rhys Thomas and directing duo Bert and Bertie, “Hawkeye” debuts exclusively on Disney+ on Nov. 24, 2021.

Disneyland

The “highway in the sky” is finally back! Available now, you will once again be able to ride the classic Disneyland Monorail, as it officially returns to its daily operation as a part of the phased reopening of the Disneyland Resort.

The Disneyland Monorail has been a beloved attraction for decades, ever since it first debuted at Disneyland in 1959 which is more than 60 years ago. At that time, it was the first daily operating monorail in the Western Hemisphere.

The Disneyland Monorail not only serves as a fun transportation experience but also offers a unique way to see elevated sights around the resort, including areal views of Tomorrowland and Fantasyland in Disneyland Park and Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure park.

Disneyland

For those who might not know, there are two locations to board the Disneyland Monorail; one station is located in the Downtown Disney District and the other station is in Tomorrowland. If you’re staying at one of the three hotels of the Disneyland Resort, hopping on the Disneyland Monorail is a fun way to bypass the main entrance and ride your way directly into Disneyland park!

If you do decide to board from Downtown Disney, just remember to make sure you have your valid ticket and theme park reservation ready, since this will serve as your official entry into Disneyland park.

For additional details on the Disneyland Monorail, including hours of operation, be sure to check the Disneyland app or Disneyland.com. And don’t forget a face-covering will be required to ride this attraction since it is an enclosed vehicle. Now, who’s ready to hop on board on a round-trip journey? Welcome back, Disneyland Monorail!

L.A.’s Haunted Hayride is Spooky Fun Time

Haunted Hayride

The spooky town of Midnight Falls returns to L.A. Haunted Hayride with new scares in an all-new location. But those who have traveled to the L.A. Haunted Hayride in years past will be glad to know parking is still relatively in the same lot.

Haunted Hayride

Midnight Falls manifested itself at the bottom of the Griffith Park hill away from the old L.A. Zoo. Additional parking is down the street at L.A. Zoo and thankfully provides regular shuttle service.

sh-boomThe new location takes full advantage of its new digs. Although still settled in a grass and dirt lot, at least there are more flat surfaces to work with compared to traversing the hills and slopes of the old location. Wide-open spaces to social distance. Plenty of picnic tables to use once you grab a festival snack such as fried shrimp, jalapeno poppers, crepes, pretzels, cinnamon rolls, and more. A large screen plays horror movie trivia for those who are too frightened of the scare mazes. A massive stage to better accommodates the gruesome performances out of Monte Revolta and his Band of the Living Dead. The stage is also conveniently nearby the expansive queue for the hayride so guests in line can still listen in on the rockin’ band. The citizens of Midnight Falls also join in the fun as they mingle with guests throughout the grounds.

The fan-favorite Scary-Go-Round with its skeleton horses centers itself between three scare mazes ready to frighten your soul to its rotten core. Midnight Mortuary invites guests to tour the funeral home and its adjoining cemetery. Weave your away past the office, gravesites, and morgue to avoid becoming the next customer. Dead End Diner cooks up a meal at this roadside establishment with juicy meat. Human meat, that is. The townsfolk will chase you from the dark back alley, a maze of chain link fences and haystacks, a fledgling farmhouse, and a creaking barn that is home to demonic livestock. The final scare maze is a returning theme in Trick or Treat. Guests navigate the neighborhood ringing doorbells to find a trick or treat waiting for them around every turn. You never know what the homeowner may have in store. The satanic frat house at the end of the street looks promising.

sh-boomMidnight Mortuary and Dead End Diner are hands down the best scare mazes L.A. Haunted Hayride has produced in years. Perhaps the new owner Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group is on the right track in returning this popular seasonal offering to his glory nights. Trick or Treat is probably best suited to be less of a scare maze and more of a scare zone. Spreading the houses throughout the property to get the guests to go door to door and ring the doorbell. Or designed to be special photo-ops while waiting for your ride time or band showtime. A supernatural town with scare mazes themed to a mortuary and diner works very well with the overall theme of Midnight Falls. But a new maze for 2022 to retire and repurpose Trick or Treat could really seal the deal.

Of course, we can’t forget about the main attraction: The Haunted Hayride. Filled to the brim with thrills, chills, and curiosities. Tractors pull your wagon full of hay past show scenes that both frighten and delight guests. The vehicle of conveyance acts as your portal to a variety of show stops pulling away from a gasoline station. The assortment of scenes has always been a hit or miss with patrons as they do not necessarily tie into one another. But that’s part of the fun as the shows unfold to reveal their tactics. There’s everything from a mechanical animal band coming to life, a tentacle-filled lake, beheading by guillotine, giant arachnid infestation, cosmic dancing, and a freaky carnival.

The new location is an absolute win for L.A. Haunted Hayride that thankfully shows a large improvement over its decimation in the years since its previous occupation. But that doesn’t mean it is totally in the clear as there is still promising room for expansion. The lighting design suffers from patches of areas that were noticeably too dark to light a path, highlight intriguing props and sets, or even just to illuminate the food stands that were open but appeared deserted. The future is still very hopeful as L.A. Haunted Hayride thrives in its new locale.
