A Spring Adventure to Ventura Harbor Village

Ventura

I love visiting a place where you can check into a hotel, park the car for a couple of days, and then explore on foot and walk to everything you need. Such is the case with Ventura Harbor Village in the seaside city of Ventura, California. This charming little enclave has great restaurants and shops, quaint hotels, and incredible ocean views.

I began a recent getaway to the waterfront village at the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Ventura Harbor, where the family and I checked into a beautiful king suite, overlooking the water and hundreds of beautiful boats.

The large room was highlighted by a huge, king bed, comfy sleeper sofa, big screen TV, cozy lounge chair and an office desk with high-speed Internet. The suite also came with a small refrigerator, microwave, Keurig coffee maker and a spacious bathroom with a walk-in shower. One of the best features of the room was the private patio, overlooking the harbor. From here we could sit and watch gorgeous yachts and fishing boats bob in the water about 50 feet away from us.

When not lounging in the room we were enjoying Harbor Village, where restaurants, shops and water activities abound. To get to the village, we walked about 5 minutes along the sidewalk lining the harbor. This lovely stroll passes hundreds of old fishing boats, yachts and sailboats docked in slips or heading out to sea. The walk also passes Ventura Harbor Boatyard (www.vhby.com/), which uses massive cranes to pick up boats of all sizes out of the water. These fascinating sights give visitors a cool behind-the-scenes look at the process of repairing and cleaning boats.

At the village, we found lots of delicious food options, from seafood and Italian to Greek, Cuban, Sushi, American and more. We were craving fish and chips for lunch and ended up at Brophy Bros. (www.brophybrosventura.com), a local favorite specializing in fresh seafood. This was a fortuitous find because the food was wonderful. The fish was light and crunchy and the poke was deliciously marinated in a soy dressing and served on a bed of cabbage, mixed greens, daikon sprouts, snow peas, crispy wontons.

After lunch, we walked to Ventura Boat Rentals (www.venturaboatrentals.com) and rented a paddleboat shaped like a big white swan. We then peddled our way around the harbor, cruising near million-dollar yachts and old sea ships; waving at large curious sea birds; and looking for fish in the water. The swan boats can hold up to 4 – 5 passengers, dependent on weight limitations and they also come with lights for a fun or romantic night cruise. Our hour-long voyage was not only exciting but was also a great workout on the legs!

Our next stop was Coastal Cone (www.coastalcone.com) ice cream parlor, where we split a giant hot fudge sundae and walked across the street to the sandy beach to eat it. After devouring the scrumptious dessert, we played on the sand dunes and explored the tide pools near the long, rocky jetty. We then strolled along the uncrowded shoreline, before heading to the hotel.

For dinner, we were back at Brophy Bros. for more fish and chips and a memorable bowl of Cioppino stew with shrimp, which fish, clams, and a rich broth, all topped with parmesan. After our meal, we sat on our patio at the Holiday Inn and watched the sun slowly fall into the Pacific Ocean behind the bobbing sailboats.

In the morning, we enjoyed a full, complimentary hotel breakfast, which included burritos, oatmeal, bagels, coffee, juice and yogurt. With our bellies full we strolled to the Channel Islands National Park Visitor’s Center, where we learned about the fascinating Channel Islands National Park. Known as “The American Galapagos,” the park encompasses five remarkable and remote islands off the Ventura coast: Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel and Santa Barbara. The Channel Islands and encircling waters are home to over 2,000 plants and animals, of which 145 are found nowhere else in the world including the Island Fox.

Established as a National Park in 1980, each of the islands is a fascinating world unto itself. World-class diving, hiking, kayaking, sea cave exploration, photography, snorkeling, camping, wildlife and wildflower viewing, the Channel Islands offers uninterrupted time with family and friends while relaxing to the soothing sounds of the natural world. To get to the islands, most people use Island Packers (www.islandpackers.com), the official company taking visitors to the islands.

We concluded our visit with a handcrafted chocolate bar from Top This Chocolate (www.topthischocolate.com), a customized shop using only luscious premium chocolate made with 100% cocoa butter. Here I watched a skilled chocolatier make me a divine and decadent milk chocolate bar with walnuts. She began by pouring the chocolate out of a big machine into a mold and then used a top-secret technique to transform it into a firm, incredible bar rivaling anything I’ve had a See’s Candy.

Universal Studios Hollywood to Reopen on Friday, April 16

Universal

At long last, Universal Studios Hollywood rolls out the red carpet to resume operations and welcome guests back to the theme park beginning on Friday, April 16. The momentous occasion will commence with a special park preview for Annual and Season Pass Members starting on Thursday, April 15.

While most rides will be operational, some rides and attractions will reopen at a later date as the theme park complies with government restrictions. Universal Studios Hollywood continues to work in partnership with health and government officials to implement new health and safety procedures that include controlled capacity to enforce physical distancing and required face coverings.  In accordance with government guidelines, only California residents may visit the theme park at this time

“We are incredibly thrilled to finally be able to open Universal Studios Hollywood, return team members to work and welcome guests back to enjoy our amazing rides,” said Karen Irwin, President & COO, Universal Studios Hollywood. “It has been a very challenging year and we are overjoyed to have arrived at this moment.”

Tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood will be available to California residents only and can be purchased online beginning on Thursday, April 8. The theme park will also celebrate Annual and Season Pass Members—who will be among the first to visit—with a series of complimentary Bonus Days on select days from Thursday, April 15 through Sunday, May 16; these Bonus Days can be reserved by Annual and Season Pass Members online starting on Monday, April 5.  Annual and Season Pass Members will be able to resume regular use of their passes starting on Monday, May 17.

Due to capacity limits, until further notice, guests with unredeemed tickets purchased prior to April 8, 2021 will need to make an advance reservation at www.UniversalStudiosHollywood.com for their visit dates.

For more information about Annual and Season Passes, including Pass Members Bonus Days and re-activation of Passes, reservations for previously purchased tickets or to purchase theme park tickets, visit www.UniversalStudiosHollywood.com.

After more than a year of closure, Universal Studios Hollywood is ready for its close-up and set to call “action on the all-new “The Secret Life of Pets:  Off the Leash!” and “Jurassic World—The Ride,” which features the spectacularly realistic new dinosaur, Indominus rex.

Universal Studios Hollywood Guest Expectations:

A stroll along the cleverly themed Pets Place will bring guests to the front of Katie’s NYC apartment building where the innovative “The Secret Life of Pets:  Off the Leash!” ride resides.

Universal

This all-new tech-savvy adventure inspired by Illumination’s blockbuster The Secret Life of Pets films, answers the question, “What are your pets really doing when you’re not at home?”

This impressive new ride combines 64 technologically-advanced animated figures with hyper-realistic media and projection mapping designed to take guests on a journey to meet some of their favorite Illumination characters from the movies, including Max, Snowball, Gidget, Chloe and Duke, along with a host of other animal friends, who have all been transformed and transported into the live-action world. From blinking eyes to eyebrow movements, from head tilts to head nods, from moving mouths to smiles, from ear curls to lip curls, from full torso twists to physically walking, the depth of mobility and function programmed within each of these loveable characters creates an experience unlike any other theme park ride.

The grand reopening of Universal Studios Hollywood also brings guests face-to-face with “Jurassic World—The Ride’s” all-new, extraordinarily realistic dinosaur, the Indominus rex, who stakes her claim at the ride’s finale in a forceful battle with her arch-rival, the Tyrannosaurus rex.

Universal

Breaking new ground with highly complex innovations, this fully-articulated lifelike Indominus injects intense new thrills, excitement and intrigue to the already dynamic ride.  Spanning nearly 55 feet horizontally from head to tail and over 22 feet vertically, the Indominus’ imposing presence will be amplified by the fluidity of her motions and synchronized movements that deliver an unprecedented level of authenticity.  From the subtle blinking of her eyes, the flexing of her arms and claws and clenching of her jaw as she bears her razor-sharp teeth, the colossal Indominus rex will lunge from her hillside setting, stalking guests just before they descend the giant waterfall drop to escape her grasp.

Of course, these new experiences are among the many welcoming attractions and themed environments that await guests upon their return to Universal Studios Hollywood, including “The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™” which features a bustling Hogsmeade village and the critically-acclaimed rides, “Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey™” and “Flight of the Hippogriff™”, “Transformers™:  The Ride-3D,” “Revenge of the Mummy:  The Ride,” Despicable Me’s “Super Silly Fun Land,” and “Springfield, U.S.A.,” home of America’s favorite animated family, “The Simpsons.”

The theme park’s signature attraction and world-renowned Studio Tour, which takes guests behind-the-scenes of an authentic production movie and television studio and where they can experience such thrill rides as “Fast & Furious—Supercharged” and “King Kong 360 3D,” will also open.

Because the safety and well-being of guests and team members is a top priority for Universal Studios Hollywood, the following guidelines outline the theme park’s new health and safety protocols, also highlighted in this video and detailed on the Universal Studios Hollywood website.

  • Temperature checks for all Guests upon arrival. If temperatures exceed 100.4° Fahrenheit / 38° Celsius or greater, Guests will not be permitted to enter.
  • Face coverings required for all guests throughout their visit. Face coverings also will be available for purchase.
  • Controlled capacity within the theme park, and limited occupancy at all CityWalk venues to help enforce physical distancing. Some areas and programs may remain temporarily closed.
  • Rigorous cleaning and disinfecting at all food locations, restrooms, and all other high touchpoints.
  • Physical distancing practices at all locations throughout the park and at rides and attractions.
  • Eating and drinking permitted only in designated dining areas.
  • Contactless payment options wherever possible.

OC Fair Makes Triumphant Return in 2021

oc fair

The excitement is just beginning, as the OC Fair just announced their triumphant return this summer, bringing back the Southern California staple to fair fans of all ages. The OC Fair returns on July 16th and will thrill fairgoers through August 15th with a brand new theme, “Time for Fun”. After the challenging summer that followed the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the news comes as a breath of fresh air and brings back a sense of optimism that is needed now more than ever.

“We are grateful to plan for an exciting, and safe, OC Fair this year,” said OC Fair Board Chair Natalie Rubalcava-Garcia. “This milestone will allow the community to come together to celebrate the future and generate much-needed opportunities for economic development and growth in Orange County. The Board and staff have done a fantastic job of responsibly managing our finances and preparing to meet safe reopening guidelines to not just make it through the pandemic, but to emerge resilient and ready for 2021 and beyond.”

Safety is key this year, as OC Fair officials have been working diligently with public health agencies to develop a covid-safe environment and protocols to keep fairgoers safe while bringing back popular carnival rides, fair foods, entertainment, competitions, animals, and much more. The plans currently follow local health projections for the summer season but are made to adapt to adhere to local health conditions and changes.

OC Fair

Advance ticket sales will be required, limiting capacity and giving fairgoers a fun and socially distanced experience that will bring peace of mind to families big and small. The number of concessions, rides, and shopping vendors will also be at a reduced capacity to allow for a safer experience. Tickets will go on sale May 1st through the OC Fair Official Site.

“We have worked through many different scenarios for the 2021 OC Fair and we are so excited to move forward with this plan because it means that we really can bring back the fun, and that’s why I love this year’s theme,” said Michele Richards, OC Fair & Event Center CEO. “We want everyone to continue to follow health guidelines and get vaccinated so we can finally celebrate summer together again.”

OC Fair

The Fair Board voted to keep ticket prices at the 2019 OC Fair rates, $12 general admission and $7 for children and seniors on weekdays (Wednesday, Thursday), and $14 general admission and $7 for children and seniors on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday). The current plan is for the fair to be closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, as it traditionally has been. There is a change to move Friday into weekend pricing and OC Fair will absorb the online ticket sale fees.

Announcements regarding concerts in Pacific Amphitheater and The Hangar will be coming soon. Are you ready for the fun? Stay tuned for more details!

Disneyland Dazzles Fans with Explosive News and Exciting Expansions

Disneyland

As Walt Disney so famously put, “as long as there is imagination left in the world, Disneyland will never be complete” and after Disney Parks and Resorts just released the explosive news that big changes are coming to the Disneyland Resort, we could not be more excited for the future of the Happiest Place on Earth.

After the long-hoped-for announcement of Disneyland’s reopening this spring, the newest details will rock the very core of every Disney Parks fan, as big and imaginative ideas are about to bring a new wave of memories and expansive horizons. The project dubbed, “DisneylandForward” is already underway as Disney is in talks with city officials and community leaders to prepare the necessary work permits and approvals to bring their creative ideas off the page and into reality.

According to the new project website, officials are going full gear to prepare for what comes next at the Disneyland Resort. “We want to bring more Disney investment to Anaheim. However, this simply isn’t possible under current inflexible planning restrictions unless we remove and replace treasured rides and attractions in our Parks today. Without updates, new Disney experiences and place-making, created from our beloved stories, will likely never find their way to the Disneyland Resort as they have to other parks throughout the world. With DisneylandForward and more flexibility within our existing properties, new lands and adventures like those underway at Tokyo DisneySea and Shanghai Disneyland could inspire new experiences here.”

New Lands and New Adventures!

DisneylandForward is also bringing the best of Disney storytelling with new lands, expanding the reaches of Disneyland Park in three major areas. Taking inspiration from Tokyo DisneySea, fans have a lot to be excited about! Take a look at the full details below:

Artist rendering imagines Arendelle and it's castle as a new possible addition to Disneyland

Frozen

Guests visit Arendelle, the home of Elsa and Anna, and explore this ‘Frozen’ land filled with a thrilling boat adventure as well as a restaurant set inside a castle.

Artist rendering takes us to the land of Rapunzel's home featuring her tower.

Tangled

Rapunzel’s tower overlooks a charming forest where guests board gondolas to the lantern festival to live Rapunzel’s “best day ever” with Flynn. A restaurant where she befriended a band of thieves in the film is also featured.

Artist rendering imagines additional Peter Pan adventures with a pirate ship and skill island.

Peter Pan

The Neverland area features two attractions: one that, with the help of Tinker Bell, takes guests on a boat ride following the Lost Boys down a river; and the other taking guests on a journey to the middle of Pixie Hollow, where Tinker Bell and her fairy friends live. The area also includes a restaurant with spectacular views inspired by the Lost Boys’ iconic hideout.

It also appears that Disney California Adventure will be getting in on the fun, with new details being shared about what could come to the resort in the future based on expansive lands that are already in Disney Parks around the globe as well as in production. This includes Shanghai Disneyland’s immersive land dedicated to the hit film Zootopia as well as the exciting updates to Walt Disney World’s own Toy Story Land and Tron Roller Coaster.

With so many possibilities, there is bound to be something for every level of Disney fan that will keep them coming back for more fresh and exciting experiences.

With DisneylandForward and updated approvals, the Disneyland Resort will continue to be an industry leader in bringing first-of-a-kind offerings to Anaheim.

Parking & Transportation

To support future development over the next few decades, Disney plans to significantly invest in transportation, parking, transit and pedestrian safety measures to improve mobility throughout The Anaheim Resort. In the future, Disney envisions creating a new parking destination on the east side of The Anaheim Resort, which would include a pedestrian bridge with upgraded entrance accessibility for hotels and businesses located along Harbor Boulevard. In addition, Disney will continue to work with area businesses and the city to invest in and encourage the use of public transit and ride-sharing for our cast and guests.

Check out the full community letter released earlier in reference to the New DisneylandForward Project below:

Community leaders like you play a pivotal role in Anaheim and that has never been more true than it is today. As we navigate our shared COVID-19 recovery, we again are looking at ways to pair robust leadership with bold ideas to ensure the Anaheim Resort Area stays vibrant for generations to come. In truth, it’s hard to believe an entire year has passed since Disneyland Resort closed its gates to guests and joined all Californians in trying to slow the spread of COVID-19. The economic and human toll on Anaheim, our cast members, and the region as a whole has been monumental, forcing the city and residents to make difficult economic choices to make ends meet. But today there is a reason for hope, and we know we will make it through this together. Thanks to the incredible efforts of so many, from healthcare workers to scientists and the mask-wearing public, we look forward to reopening the gates very soon. At Disneyland Resort, we are taking this time to dream beyond the now and think boldly about the future because bold ideas and thoughtful leadership aren’t just our legacy, they’re our best path forward. Although the Disneyland Resort currently has the development approvals to build additional theme park attractions, hotel rooms, entertainment, retail, dining, shopping and parking, our existing development approvals severely limit the ways in which we can expand and locate our offerings. That is why we are launching DisneylandForward, our public planning effort with the city of Anaheim to update our development approvals the meet the current and future demand in entertainment. With these updated approvals, Disneyland Resort will continue to be an industry leader in bringing first-of-a-kind offerings to Anaheim, which in turn will create thousands of new jobs and help support Anaheim’s funding for important services such as fire, police and public schools. To be clear, Disneyland Resort is not seeking any public funding in this effort, nor are we seeking to develop any additional square footage or hotel rooms beyond what is already allowed. We are simply working with the city and community to update existing approvals to allow for integrated, immersive experiences to be appropriately placed and built throughout Disney properties. If you would like to learn more about our exciting plans for the future, please visit our website at DisneylandForward.com.

Though the full details and reveals are not yet available, this could be one of the most pivotal points in Disneyland’s legendary history. Where we go from here is only the beginning and from what we have seen so far, it is definitely going to be a great big beautiful tomorrow for all Disneyland fans. Stay tuned for the latest!

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Dominates with Record Breaking Disney+ Premiere

Falcon

The Mandalorian and Grogu have met their match now that Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has flown to the top of the ratings with an epic record-setting premiere that makes the new Marvel series the most-watched series premiere in the streaming service’s history.

The series joins both smash hits Wandavision and the Mandalorian Season 2 as one of the most-watched series-opening weekends to date. Being only the second streaming series released to Disney+ from Marvel, this is a huge win for the blockbuster machine, leaving fans eagerly thirsting for more exclusive content.

After the explosive response to Wandvision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will continue to take fans into the next frontier of Marvel’s epic franchise, following the aftermath of The Blip and the loss of Captain America through the eyes of Steve’s best friends, Sam Wilson and former Winter Soldier, Bucky Barnes. The two will team up and embark on a global adventure that will not only put their abilities to the test but challenge them in ways they have never before imagined and bring them face to face with old foes from their star-spangled hero’s past.

Black Widow Release Battle Ends with Disney+ Release

Black Widow

The fate of Marvel’s Black Widow has finally been revealed after Disney released some big news relating to whether or not the film would be brought to streaming versus remaining a big screen exclusive release. Black Widow will now be released simultaneously via Disney+ as well as mainstream theaters this summer through Premier Access.

For Marvel fans across the globe, the news does not come as a surprise, but after a hard hit year due to the coronavirus pandemic, it makes perfect sense that the highly anticipated standalone feature would make its way into the streaming game after Hollywood delays and nationwide theater closures prevented it from its original 2020 debut.

The film will be joining the ranks of Raya and the Last Dragon, as well as Pixar’s Academy-Award nominated feature, Soul, on Disney+ Premier Access. For international movie fans where Disney+ is not yet available, future dates will be announced for the films’ debuts overseas.

Black Widow

Black Widow will be available on July 9 , before that, Disney’s new live action tale, Cruella, starring Emma Stone, will premiere on May 28. Disney also revealed other release date shifts, including the comedy adventure, Free Guy, starring Deadpool alum, Ryan Reynolds.

Disney and Pixar’s “Luca” is now set to Release Exclusively on Disney+ on June 18 and will be included with the streaming service.

Review: Marvel’s ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Series Premiere – Back to Basics

Falcon

When we last saw Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes at the finale of Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame, they were speaking with an old Steve Rogers after he had successfully returned the infinity stones and lived out his life with Peggy Carter. Steve hands his shield to Sam and tells him to try it on. “How does it feel?” Steve asks. “Like it’s someone else’s,” Sam replies. Steve looks at him, with a slight grin – “It isn’t.” And thus, the mantle of Captain America is handed off to someone else…or so we thought.

Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the second MCU series to hit Disney+, though it was actually the first to begin production. After several months of delays due to the pandemic, the limited series is finally here. Although it takes place at the same time as WandaVision, it is thematically very different. And like the Captain America films, it starts off with a bang.

Returning to the title roles are Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan respectively. The show seeks to explore the personal lives of our heroes as they struggle to adjust to a post-Endgame society. With half of humanity gone for 5 years, the chaos left in its wake can’t be overlooked. New extremist groups have emerged, regular people who survived the blip have fought for their livelihoods, and those that returned are looking for their place back in the world.

Marvel

Sam Wilson feels he is unequal to the task of becoming Captain America. Despite Steve’s wishes, he chooses to give the shield to the Smithsonian as a part of the Captain America exhibit and wants to continue life as a private citizen. As a former soldier, Sam feels he owes it to his country to continue serving and assist the military with dangerous missions. He also checks in with his sister Sarah down in Louisiana, who is trying to pull her life back together after the effects of the blip.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes is struggling to come to terms with decades of being an assassin for Hydra. Although he was rehabilitated in Wakanda and received a pardon by the government for his crimes, Bucky attends therapy sessions in an effort to move on from his dark past as the Winter Soldier. He lies about the nightmares he has and tries to secretly make amends with those he inadvertently harmed. But he cannot shake the guilt he feels.

Although the show is certain to be action-packed, it also feels deeply personal. Until now, the audience has known nothing about Sam Wilson’s life beyond his time as a soldier. This series gives us an opportunity to interact with his family and see how real people struggled during the blip to make ends meet.

And through the trailers, it’s clear we’ll also see Sam rethink his decision of turning down the Captain America mantle. For Anthony Mackie, who is actually from Louisiana, it gives him a unique chance to inject his real background into the character.

For Bucky Barnes, we get to see him as a normal person for what feels like the first time. His appearance in Captain America: The First Avenger was relatively brief and since then, we’ve mostly experienced him as the Winter Soldier or in the midst of an epic battle. Now he’s grappling with PTSD, trying to start anew and figure out who he wants to be. It’s a rare opportunity for a character to get a second lease on life and an essentially clean slate. Sebastian Stan has always been great at the intense but conflicted duality of Bucky / Winter Soldier. His moments in therapy are intimate, and really allow his acting chops to shine.

Returning from the MCU as supporting characters are Emily VanCamp as Sharon Carter and Daniel Brühl as Helmut Zemo. And there are some exciting newcomers as well, including Adepero Oduye as Sam’s sister, Wyatt Russell (Lodge 49), and Erin Kellyman (Solo: A Star Wars Story). And there will surely be some additional surprise cameos along the way.

For me, the first episode was an exciting return to form. While WandaVision was an undoubtedly excellent series, its unique storytelling approach may not have been for everyone. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is sure to be more in-line with what Marvel fans come to expect. It feels like the previous Captain America films, which in my opinion were the strongest of the MCU solo films. And given the buddy cop vibe between Sam and Bucky that we’ve seen, it will surely be action-packed, but full of heart and humor.

Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Premieres on Disney+ on Friday, March 19.

Score: 9/10

‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’ Press Conference

The Falcon and the winter Soldier

In preparation for the debut of Marvel Studios’ The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on Disney+, Kelley Carter from ESPN sat down with the cast and crew for insight and questions related to the production. In attendance were Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, director Kari Skogland, head writer Malcolm Spellman, and Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier picks up shortly after the events of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers, presumed dead to the world but secretly retired after living out his life with Peggy Carter, has handed over the shield and Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson, aka Falcon (Mackie).

Feeling unequal to the title, Sam chooses to give the shield to the Smithsonian and make it part of the Captain America exhibit. Sam continues to participate in military missions and do his duty for the country.

Meanwhile, Bucky Barnes aka the Winter Soldier (Stan) is struggling to come to terms with decades of being an assassin for Hydra. After his rehabilitation in Wakanda and recent pardon by the government for his crimes, he attends therapy sessions in an effort to move on from his dark past. But his previous actions continue to gnaw at his conscience as he tries to live a normal life.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

These two characters have been through a lot together, and not always positive. Sam has had to fight against Bucky when he was still the Winter Soldier, but also (begrudgingly) fought with him as part of Team Cap in Civil War. The link between these two characters was always Steve, and with him now gone, we get the opportunity to see a new relationship develop and also learn a bit more about them individually.

Originally intended to be released in late summer 2020, the series was delayed due to the pandemic. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige mentioned the fact that it was actually their first project before WandaVision started filming, which posed new personal challenges: “It’s really meant to prove…that just because it’s on TV, doesn’t mean it’s not going to be as big…as a movie. This first episode…really starts off with a bang. If we’re going to do a series with Falcon and the Winter Soldier, then we need to start off with the best possible action.”

In discussing how to approach the “buddy-cop” dynamic of the show, writer Malcolm Spellman found the opportunity to be a blessing: “What we loved about them is the range tonally; you can go from as gritty as 48 Hours to as comedic as Rush Hour. But in between, there’s sort of like that first Lethal Weapon and Bad Boys, and what we liked about it was, it allows it allows Sebastian and Anthony to do what they do and create that magic. But also allows the broader creative to…take on real issues or if you need to get into something very Marvel-y, it’s a very durable form of storytelling.”

In talking about some of the more serious tones like PTSD, Sebastian Stan discusses the commonality between both main characters: “The whole subject of PTSD and the experience that they both share as soldiers, as men who have served, is one of the things that brings them together and there’s sort of a bit of an honor code between them. Even though they come from different…ideas or opinions about things, there’s mutual respect. And as everybody knows PTSD is…something that one has to continue to grow with and to become better at dealing with. Obviously, it’s a major part of our show and it grounds both of these characters in very realistic ways.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

On the differences between making a 2-hour film vs a 6-hour series, director Kari Skogland highlights the breathing room she was afforded: “It’s a lot more work….you know what is terrific I’ve been calling the movies…the snack and this is like the meal. You really can get involved with the characters in a way in 6 hours that you’re just not able to in a film, particularly because the films are often very…high octane already and they’re immersed in some world-saving event. So it’s very hard to…go off on a little tangent with the character. But on a series, you’re able to meander a little bit and we’re able to get inside the lives of our characters.”

In regards to stunt work on the show vs the movies, Anthony Mackie explains new ways they looked at fighting: “The great thing about what we were able to do with this was nothing was jeopardized or watered down. The same stunt guys we work with on the films are the same guys who choreographed and did all of our stunts on the show. Because of that, the stunts are really amazing. Taking the idea of weaponry away so it’s more hand-to-hand combat, it’s more physical, it’s more assertive. It’s more of us utilizing our strengths instead of something else.”

All in all, the cast and crew are excited for the opportunity to dive deeper into these characters. From learning more personal backstory of Sam Wilson to seeing Bucky Barnes adjusting to a new life, to some of the repercussions of Endgame and the effects it had on everyday people. Stay tuned for our full review of the first episode.
