New Cast Face Coverings Provided for Domestic Cast Members

Cast Face

Wearing a cast face covering has become part of our new normal. It’s also an important piece of Disney’s multi-layered approach to health and safety, and one of the ways to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Disney is excited to share a peek behind the magic and an innovative way the cast members are helping their fellow cast stay comfy and protected with stylish and functional new face coverings, designed for cast, by cast.

Face Cast

Designed in partnership across the Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World costuming teams – Disney Parks Live Entertainment, Worldwide Safety Services, and Global Applied Technology – these face coverings were developed remotely through a bi-coastal effort between cast members at both resorts.

“Over the past several months, we’ve spent significant time and brainpower to provide our cast members with face coverings that are both functional and comfortable, and I’m proud of the incredible results,” said Dr. Pamela Hymel, Disney Parks Chief Medical Officer. “They fit well, feel great, and can last for more than 50 washes.”

Drawing from their own experience, the project stemmed from a need for a more unified and breathable face covering. With the full support of their leaders at Disney, this group seized the opportunity to create the unique, reusable face covering, specifically made for cast members at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort.

“The unified design speaks to the fact that we are still one unified Cast, one Disney ‘world,’” shared Yonit Olshan, Costume Designer, Disneyland Resort Costuming. “As a creative team, we gained so much from each other’s experience and exposure to different types of problems and projects.”

Face Cast

Offered exclusively for cast members in two styles, pleated and contoured, and in multiple sizes, the design team sourced and tested a wide range of fabrics, styles, and features with a focus on comfort and function. Both styles feature adjustable spandex over the ears, extended nose pinch to the face, contoured shape under eyes, and lightweight, quick-drying material.

Drawing inspiration from classic Disney characters, films, and television shows, the pattern unifies what every dreamer and cast member have in common – joy, magic, and a little pixie dust. They sparkle with pixie dust and Mickey constellations, recalling that the second star to the right shines in the dreamy night and reminds us to keep wishing upon that evening star.

Face Cast

Together, as a Disney family, there are many important ways that we can all help promote each other’s safety. Disney wants to thank the guests and cast members for all they do to care for one another and doing their part.

Tom and Jerry
Produced by Spike Brandt (Duck Dodgers) and Tony Cervone (Space Jam), Tom and Jerry:  A Nutcracker Tale Special Edition tells the story of Jerry Mouse, who is a devoted fan of “The Nutcracker” and is magically transported into his own version of the classical ballet one Christmas Eve. The film is inspired by classic Tom and Jerry cartoon shorts that were originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. It is a heartwarming, and hilarious take on the world-famous holiday ballet about a little girl who goes to the Land of Sweets on Christmas Eve with her favorite gift, a toy nutcracker, which ultimately transforms into a handsome prince.
After watching the season’s final performance of “The Nutcracker” ballet on Christmas Eve, Jerry dreams of dancing with the beautiful prima ballerina, who captivates him with her graceful performance. After the theater patrons leave, Jerry climbs onto the stage and begins to dance on his own, as Tuffy Mouse cheers him on. Through the magic of Christmas Eve, Jerry is suddenly transformed into one of the dancers. Costumed to look like regal prince, he takes center stage, which turns into a winter wonderland, as all the toy props around him come to life, and music from Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” begins to play. A petite music box ballerina springs to life and joins Jerry as the two of them dance their way into the Nutcracker’s magical realm. It seems as though Jerry’s “The Nutcracker” fantasy has finally become a reality. That’s until Tom and his band of alley cats enter through the theater’s stage door, capture all the toys and lock the beautiful ballerina in a cage.
“For many, The Nutcracker is a holiday tradition and this entertaining film captures the essence of that classic story with its own unique adaptation,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Senior Vice President, Originals, Animation and Family Marketing. “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” Coming to Disney+

On Friday, September 25, Disney+ debuts its next original series from National Geographic, “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” giving viewers an all-access pass to explore the magic of nature within Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge and The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT. Narrated by the award-winning fan-favorite Josh Gad (“Frozen,” “Frozen II”), the eight-episode docu-series is the ultimate tribute to the parks’ magnificent array of more than 300 species and 5,000-plus animals and the herculean tasks their animal care experts undertake to keep things running day and night.

Since Walt Disney first introduced the world to Mickey Mouse in 1928, animals have been at the heart of Disney storytelling. We’ve ventured deep into the forests with Bambi; swung through the jungles of Africa with Terk and Tantour; stood atop Pride Rock with Simba; and swam under the sea with Sebastian. Now, through “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” Disney+ viewers peek behind the curtain of the most-visited theme parks in the world to explore Earth’s iconic animal kingdoms with Disney’s dedicated and highly skilled animal care experts and veterinary teams as guides.

Animal Kingdom

The docu-series introduces viewers to enchanting animals that have their own unique personalities and family dynamics, inviting fans of Disney, nature and animals to spend time with all the parks’ residents in brand-new ways, including the following:

  • Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail — Hang out with the newest member of the gorilla troop, baby Grace, named after the GRACE (Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center) gorilla sanctuary in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and help her dad and troop leader, Gino, celebrate his 39th birthday.
  • Harambe Wildlife Reserve — Meet animal keeper Rory and come face to knee with his best friend, supermom Masai giraffe Kenya; play fetch with black rhino Badru and his keeper, Katie.
  • Kilimanjaro Safaris — Swing past a day spa as keeper Nicole gives two hyenas a bath in the hopes that they’ll be as endearing to guests as they are to her; watch Dakari, the alpha male African lion, reign over his land; and meet Kinsey, the alpha lioness, who’s the real ruler of the pride.
  • Discovery Island — Stop by the love nest of Carri and Bones, an endangered vulture couple, as animal keeper Tricia sets the mood for mating and steps up as eggsitter.
  • Tiger Temple — Witness animal care experts employing extra creativity to keep critically endangered Sumatran tigers Anala and Sohni entertained.
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends at EPCOT — Plunge in with some of the 3,000 ocean animals that call it home, including an injured wild sea turtle, Harry; rescued manatees Lil’ Joe and Lou; Darby, a pregnant spotted eagle ray; and aquarist Amanda, who is also expecting.

“‘Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom’ captures the spirit of these two world-famous parks and its animals and ushers that feeling directly into viewers’ living rooms,” says narrator Josh Gad. “Each episode, we get to know these animals intimately and are immersed in the magic of Disney, and it’s been a joy-giving voice to this ultimate adventure.”

“Whether you have visited our parks hundreds of times, or you are being introduced for the first time through “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom,” viewers will get an unparalleled, all-new experience as they meet some of the most intriguing animals in our care,” says Dr. Mark Penning, Vice President, Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment, Disney Parks. “I’m extremely proud of the work our team does to accomplish and deliver on Disney’s commitment to best-in-class animal care and conservation as we aim to live in harmony with nature and protect the wondrous wildlife on our planet.”

Filmed across five months, the series incorporates cutting-edge technology, including custom-built GoPro enclosures, 18-foot cranes and underwater camera systems, to highlight the magic found in every crevice of the kingdom. “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” dives into the details of each park, unveiling the multifaceted aspects of animal care, operations and Imagineering. Viewers get up close to veterinarians working in one of the world’s most advanced animal health facilities as they solve a menagerie of medical mysteries and revolutionize the care they give to their animals.

Groundbreaking conservation remains a critical component of The Walt Disney Company’s mission, and “Magic of Disney’s Animal Kingdom” also highlights the parks’ commitment to protecting the magic of nature. Since 1995, the Disney Conservation Fund has directed $100 million to support nonprofit organizations working with communities to save wildlife, inspire action and protect the planet. In addition, Disney Conservation Team Wildlife works hand-in-hand with the animal care teams to deliver best-in-class scientific programs to conserve wildlife in Disney’s backyard and beyond and inspire people from around the world to care for the planet through everyday actions.

“The Proud Family” Cast and Creative Team Reunite

The Proud Family

The cast and executive producers of the groundbreaking animated series “The Proud Family” participated in a virtual reunion during the NAACP’s Arts, Culture & Entertainment Festival. Moderated by Keke Palmer, who announced that she will be joining the cast of Disney+’s upcoming series “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder,” the panel featured Kyla Pratt (Penny Proud), Tommy Davidson (Oscar Proud), Paula Jai Parker (Trudy Proud), Jo Marie Payton (Suga Mama) and Cedric the Entertainer (Uncle Bobby), creator/executive producer Bruce W. Smith and executive producer Ralph Farquhar.

Their conversation included reminiscing about the cultural impact of the Disney Channel series which premiered 18 years ago, and a glimpse of the exciting new series coming exclusively to Disney+.

The Proud Family

Palmer will play the role of Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, a 14-year-old activist who relentlessly marches to the beat of her own drum. She is extremely mature for her age and will not hesitate to shut anyone down with her blunt honesty and wisdom.  The adopted daughter of mixed-race parents, Maya is new to town, and initially disassociates herself from Penny and her crew because she is skeptical about what she perceives to be the superficiality of social cliques. However, Penny eventually gains her hard-earned respect and the two become good friends.

The Proud Family

Picking up the story of its central character Penny Proud, “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” will also include her madcap family: parents Oscar and Trudy, twin siblings BeBe and CeCe, and her grandmother Suga Mama (and Puff!). Of course, it would not be “The Proud Family” without Penny’s loyal crew Dijonay Jones, LaCienega Boulevardez, and Zoey Howzer, among others.

The Proud Family

All seasons of “The Proud Family” are currently available on Disney+. “The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder” are currently in production.

Disney+ Premieres “Howard” an Original Documentary Film

Howard

Disney+ will premiere the original documentary film “Howard”  exclusively on Friday, August 7, 2020. The film, which first premiered at the 2018 Tribeca Film Festival, follows the captivating life story of Disney Legend and Academy Award-winning Lyricist Howard Ashman.

“Howard” is Directed by Don Hahn (“Beauty and the Beast”), of the untold story of Howard Ashman, the amazing lyricist behind Disney classics like “Aladdin,” “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Little Mermaid” and creator of musicals including “Little Shop of Horrors.” Featuring never-before-seen archive footage, personal films, and photographs, as well as interviews with Howard’s friends and family, the film is an intimate look at the Disney Legend’s life, his creative drive, and the process behind the music.

Born in Baltimore, Howard Ashman grew up loving musical theatre. After studying at Boston University and Goddard College, he earned his Master’s degree at the University of Indiana. In 1978, Howard came to New York and opened an Off-Off-Broadway theatre, which he initially subsidized by writing cover copy for book publishers before it became the talk of the town.

His success adapting a Kurt Vonnegut novel, God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater, led Howard and his songwriting partner, Alan Menken, to adapt the Roger Corman film Little Shop of Horrors for the stage which quickly became a cultural phenomenon in New York City and beyond.

During a recent interview with Director Don Hahn, we had the opportunity to hear and learn what it took to make this movie.

Q: What inspired you to make this film, and especially now for Disney+?

Hahn: It was an untold story, people don’t know this man and this was a great way to introduce him. The more I dug into it the more story it was. We stand down with his sister and talked to her about making this documentary 4-5 years ago. Many parts were complicated and interesting, the joy and struggles and what was going through Howard’s head.

Howard

Q: Were there any lessons from your projects you applied to Howard?

Hahn: I pretty much let the storytellers tell their story. And we were fortunate to have one of the best storytellers of the 20th century, Howard Ashman, in this movie. I did was to also go on a treasure hunt to try to find sound bites and film clips and things that people maybe haven’t heard before and then to really just stay out of the way that we don’t need kind of classic elements of documentaries like taking Heads.

I just wanted his family, his colleagues, his, you know, people like John Musker experiments and people who worked with him at Disney. Let’s let them talk about him because we were all close to him and let’s find out what our recollections are. So that was the approach. And a lot of that comes from the lessons learned from previous projects.

Q: Well, you just talked about structuring and coming up with these moments of conflict. Did the story change for you as you progressed through this process?

Hahn: Yeah, I might have had it more Disney based at the beginning, just because that’s my background and I was interested in it and I knew the audience would be interested in that. But the more I dug into theater and Rosewater and the Little Shop of Horrors and the kind of theatrical background of Howard and when he got to school at 22 or 23 years old, he moved to New York City, from Baltimore, and opens a theater. It’s insane.

But, you know, there’s so much unproduced material, that he wrote that didn’t make it to the screen in terms of Disney songs and other material. I tried to put as much of that in as I could. And the last thing I wanted to do is let Howard be instructive.

Q: How difficult a process was it to turn Howard’s background, which was very non-Disney in the beginning, into basically a Disney produced a documentary that you said that originally thought it was going to be more Disney focused?

Hahn: Well, it fell into place mainly because it was never a Disney film, I did it as an independent film, not with any, you know, evil purpose, but I just felt like I want to have the license to put the story together in the way that I think is best. And then if I do my job right, it will be an interesting story because it deals with some difficult issues. It deals with a gay man from Baltimore who writes songs for Disney movie, is afraid of getting fired because he’s contracted AIDS, and eventually dies of AIDS is a difficult subject, but it’s paired with a lot of joy and a lot of amazing work.

The film features interviews with Ashman’s longtime musical collaborator Alan Menken, who also scored the film, Bill Lauch (Ashman’s Partner), Jodi Benson (“The Little Mermaid”), Paige O’Hara (“Beauty and the Beast”), Sarah Gillespie (Ashman’s Sister), and more.

“You may not know his name, but you sure know Howard Ashman’s music,” said Director, Writer, and Producer Don Hahn. “He’s one of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century who helped to revitalize the American musical and re-energize Disney Animation. He left us a songbook that still lives on in us today, yet his personal story has never been fully told until now.”

Q: Often storytellers don’t like to inject themselves fully into the story, but obviously with documentaries, you kind of actually have to. Because you knew Howard, how did your emotion get the best of you and what kind of emotions were going through your head as you were piecing together this film?

Hahn: That’s a tough question to answer. I think I’m pretty analytical when I’m making films and really work on the story. But a story like this, since I knew Howard and worked with him well, it can’t help but get you emotionally. And a lot of times it would happen. When I interviewed other people, like Jodi Benson, we talked for a long, long time. And it was a very clear field conversation about the joy and struggle of working with Howard. And sometimes that’s what gets to me is how it moved other people.

Howard

Q: Could you describe the moment when he won an Academy Award, what that was like for you?

Hahn: He first won the Academy Award for a little mermaid, you know, which was great. We were slaving away on the beach at the time that happened. So we really happy for him.

Howard left us during the making of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST. Since then, I’ve wanted to tell his story. I could never forget my time with Howard from watching him in story meetings articulate what was right or wrong about a moment and why to work with Linda Woolverton on the script to BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

I watched him get sicker and sicker before my eyes until he couldn’t speak or see or write anymore. And since then, I’ve watched his work entertain and inspire audiences in a profound way.

HOWARD is a story of a brilliant man, like no other I had known—a man who lived a joyful life with a tragic ending, a man who, with Menken, brought back the musical and in doing so brought back the moribund animation business at Disney.

“Howard” is now streaming on Disney+. To subscribe click here.

Pixar’s New Original Film “LUCA” Coming in 2021

Luca

Pixar Animation Studios has announced that its next feature film release will be “Luca.” Directed by Academy Award nominee Enrico Casarosa (“La Luna”) and produced by Andrea Warren (“Lava,” “Cars 3”), “Luca” is set to open in U.S. theaters June 18, 2021.

Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta, and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.

“This is a deeply personal story for me, not only because it’s set on the Italian Riviera where I grew up, but because at the core of this film is a celebration of friendship. Childhood friendships often set the course of who we want to become and it is those bonds that are at the heart of our story in ‘Luca,’” said Enrico Casarosa, director.

“So in addition to the beauty and charm of the Italian seaside, our film will feature an unforgettable summer adventure that will fundamentally change Luca.”

Other Pixar’s movies include “Soul” which is slated to premiere on Nov. 20. Disney delayed that film, which was originally scheduled for June, because of theater closures due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“Soul” follows a middle-school music teacher (voiced by Jamie Foxx), whose dreams of being a jazz performer are put on hold after he gets in an accident that causes his soul to leave his body.
