Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo

A multi-purpose transport shuttle docked on top of a large hangar will beckon guests into Docking Bay 7 Food and Cargo, a designated location for traveling food shuttles. Docked in the hangar is Tugg’s Grub, a “traveling diner for diners traveling” run by Chef Strono “Cookie” Tuggs. In high-demand for his cooking skills, he moves from site to site in a modified Sienar-Chall Utilipede Transport that can be transformed into a mobile kitchen and restaurant. His travels across the galaxy allow him to fill his pantry with exotic ingredients which he uses to make new and unusual dishes inspired by his time on Takodana.

Oga’s Cantina

Run by the boss of the Black Spire Outpost underworld, Oga Garra, Oga’s Cantina is an establishment that attracts some of the most interesting and disreputable characters in the galaxy. Very little is known about Oga herself. She’s not usually at the Cantina, preferring to collect payments remotely, and most of the locals have never laid eyes on her before. Her patrons come from across the galaxy to sample the famous concoctions offered here. These beverages are created with unique ingredients using “otherworldly” methods. In addition, Oga regularly procures unique shipments of beers, cider, and wines. While partaking in these thirst-quenching concoctions, guests can enjoy the musical stylings of DJ R-3X (also known as REX), the former Starspeeder 3000 pilot droid we first met in Star Tours. He’s reinvented himself as the cantina’s resident DJ and is quirky and talkative as ever, just trying to do his best on the job.

‘Fiddler On The Roof’ Plays Loudly in OC

Fiddler on the Roof

One of the all-time musical classics has returned to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. This new production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is filled with talent, along with updated choreography from Broadway newcomer Hofesh Shechter. Pulling from the original works of Jerome Robbins, the choreography remains fresh and the star of the show. Retaining the bottle balancing wedding dance with some added flair and the inclusion of such staples as “If I Were A Rich Man”, “Matchmaker”, and the opening act, “Tradition”, keeps this production celebrated.  However, those not familiar with the show should be warned of the near 3-hour long runtime and have a little understanding of the music. I’ll say it, it’s not for everyone and is not something I will find myself listening to later, but it does work for the show.  It’s updated from its 1964-self, but is it enough to appeal to a new audience?

Those already in love with FIDDLER ON THE ROOF and familiar with the music will surely find this production satisfying. I, however, have a tough time with its length when there are apparent areas that could easily benefit from slimming. I understand this viewpoint may come across as juvenile, but it’s tough to find myself okay with such slowness to a show with a lack of showstoppers.

Yes, I said it. While the voice talent is good and the music… fine, it does not generate any breathtaking moments. This is something expected from an old-school Broadway production that you won’t find in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. There are some beautiful numbers, but I am not leaving the theater talking about amazing “Matchmaker” was sung.

Intergalactic

I am however leaving praising the Israeli actor and theatre director, Yehezkel Laraov, who plays Tevye, essentially the lead and main protagonist. His charm is captivating and his story easy to follow. We find him struggling with losing three of his five girls to a decline in traditional marriages, but also find him relatively tolerant and gentle until the line is crossed. It’s a story of growth and understanding not only for a traditional Jewish father but also an entire township.

The audience finds themselves toasting “To Life” before finding out the Jews are not welcome within their Russian shtetl of Anatevka in 1905. Grappling to find comfort in the independent choices of his daughters,Tevye also must find what’s right for his family, and his community. Whether it’s going against the traditions of Yente (Carol Beaugard) the matchmaker, or giving his blessing for a daughter to marry a poor tailor, Motel (Jesse Weil), FIDDLER ON THE ROOF shows the importance of accepting someone’s choice even when against tradition.

Laraov along with the singing and the choreography is what keeps FIDDLER ON THE ROOF strong in a today’s saturated modern stage-musical climate, BUT its pace and length may still find it challenging to find new love. Perhaps a viewing on Friday night opposed to Tuesday may have helped my droopy eyes for when the intermission came in around 9:30 pm.

The fiddler may be on an unstable roof like Tevye and his communities traditions are, but we all have our support around us to help us see a loving and accepting future. Almost 60 years later and society is still humming to the same tune striving to get through today and to a better tomorrow.

FIDDLER ON THE ROOF is playing through May 19th. Tickets start at $29 and are available for purchase at SCFTA.org.

The Disney Diaries: “Get Your Ears On” Snacks Revisited

With Mickey and Minnie’s “Get Your Ears On” Celebration still in full swing at the Disneyland Resort, we thought we’d take a quick snack break and take a look at some of the amazingly delicious offerings throughout the resort.

If you haven’t had a chance to visit, there are so many tasty and creative Mickey and Friends themed snacks resort wide. A full list of foodie favorites can be found here, but for this trip, we wanted a chance to take a closer look at a few select favorites. Each item is special in its own way, with the best part being that it won’t make a major blow on your pocketbook. (None of the items shown are over $10) Let’s get started with something sweet!

Oh boy! Check out this delicious Mickey Mouse premium doughnut at Jolly Holiday Bakery in Disneyland Park.
Oh boy! Check out this delicious Mickey Mouse premium doughnut at Jolly Holiday Bakery in Disneyland Park.

Mickey Mouse is featured prominently in this Mickey Mouse chocolate layered doughnut. The doughnut brings the colors of our favorite mouse front and center with sweet candied buttons and silky chocolate mousse filling. It’s a fantastic snack and can be found at Jolly Holiday Bakery along with other daily doughnut creations, such as the Fruity Pebbles Doughnut. The donuts will remain at Jolly Holiday for the time being, as the Main Street Donut Cart was removed during pathway refurbishments and upgrades to the guest walkways around Frontierland and Adventureland.

Jolly Holiday is also home to another special Mouse treat, focusing on Mickey’s lovely partner in crime, Minnie Mouse. Minnie’s signature bow and polka dots take over the classic Jolly Holiday brownie recipe and we are absolutely in love with the results. Take a look at this beautiful creation, which is almost too dazzling to eat. This brownie definitely adds a whole new definition to #RockTheDots

The Minnie Mouse brownie is the perfect treat to share in a sweet moment with your loved ones.

Still, it wouldn’t be a true celebration of Mickey Mouse without Donald Duck trying to steal the spotlight. New to the resort this spring, Jolly Holiday has debuted a Donald themed lemon blueberry bundt cake that steals the show. Topped with whipped cream, mini blueberries and a candied sailor hat, Donald fans have a new reason to flock to the parks.

The original angry duck gets his own dessert. Are you going to try it?

Meanwhile at Disney California Adventure, the perfect way to wash this all down remains. Mickey has his own “Cookies and Cream” shake over at Schmoozies, and with the Southern California sun, what better way to stay cool and look cool doing it? Though make sure to grab your photos fast, because if you love chocolate, you won’t be able to resist polishing this off before it’s too late.

This shake features Mickey sprinkles, oreo mouse ears, and plenty of whip cream!
This shake features Mickey sprinkles, oreo mouse ears, and plenty of whip cream!

The best part of this shake is the Oreo mouse ears, which are great to share, or to recharge yourself on your next solo trip through Hollywoodland. It takes “Get Your Ears On” to a lovely, chocolatey level.

One of the best parts of these seasonal celebrations is the food. Every trip provides a unique experience, and one that only Disney food can provide. What are some of your “Get Your Ears On” favorites?

Hurry and make your way to the Disneyland Resort before it all vanishes into Disneyland yesteryear! Keep your eyes and ears open though, as more Disney Diaries are coming your way with exciting videos, photos, and personalized content! Pardon our dust and get ready for what’s coming next!

Beautiful Beasts and a Beastly Ball at the Los Angeles Zoo

The LA Zoo is home to 1,400 mammals, birds, amphibians, and reptiles, representing more than 270 different species (photo by Greg Aragon)

There is some big news going on at the Los Angeles Zoo. Last month a rare baby zebra was born, and later this month the zoo will host its annual “Beastly Ball” fundraiser party, which raises money and awareness for animal conservation and habitat preservation for some of the world’s most rare and vulnerable species.

With this in mind, I knew it was time for a return visit to one of my favorite Los Angeles attractions.

One of the highlights of my visit was the Chimpanzees of Mahale Mountains exhibit. Lauded by primatologist Jane Goodall as one of the finest zoo habitats, this one-acre environment is home to a large troop of chimpanzees. It is designed to resemble the native environment of Tanzania’s Mahale Mountains in Africa and features mountainous rock formations, waterfalls and streams, palm trees and soft green grass. The facility also features a chimpanzee penthouse with heated bedrooms for the apes and an outdoor playground that has a jungle gym.

After studying the chimpanzees, we stopped at Campo Gorilla Reserve. Home to seven western lowland gorillas, the enclosure is highlighted by a forested pathway that visitors walk along to see the animals living among waterfalls and lush plants. There are two separate troops of gorillas, a family, and a bachelor group. Glassed viewing areas and planted moats are all that separates Zoo guests from the largest primate in the world.

From the gorillas, we stepped into Red Ape Rain Forest, a multi-level tropical region, where orangutans of the Southeast Asian rain forest roam through 20-foot-tall bamboo, fruit, and ficus trees. The main viewing area is a large platform that allows Zoo guests to view these arboreal apes as they climb to canopy level.

After hanging out with the primates, we walked to see the Grevy’s Zebras, to see if we could get a glimpse of the new baby foal that was born last month. As the first successful baby zebra born at the zoo since 1988, the foal was born to father Khalfani and mother Jamila.

Grevy’s zebras are the largest and most threatened of the three zebra species. They inhabit semi-arid and open scrub grasslands in Africa. The baby was bonding with her mother when we got there, but we still got to see another zebra roaming around.

From the zebras, we headed to see one of their biggest predators – the African lion. At this enclosure we watched a large male and female, strolling around the shade of their habitat. And although he seemed a little tired during our visit, the male managed to give the crowd a few roars.

Other cool zoo exhibits include Rainforest of the Americas, the newest state-of-the-art exhibit, which immerses visitors in the theme, “the rainforest is a home;” Elephants of Asia, which is dedicated to the health and welfare of the elephants; Meerkat Manor, featuring a mob of friendly meerkats; and Flamingo Mingle, where guests can step into the flamingo habitat, feed them, and become one of the flock during a fifteen-minute, $25 interactive experience.

On Saturday, May 18, the zoo will host its annual Beastly Ball, a fundraiser for the preservation of endangered animals, including the California condor, mountain yellow-legged frogs, and peninsular pronghorn. This star-studded event brings together celebrities, industry executives, city officials, and zoo supporters for a wild night of food, fun, and fundraising.

Guests of the Beastly Ball are treated to rare after-hours Zoo access and activities. There will also be cuisine prepared by some of LA’s most notable restaurants; a mobile-bidding silent auction; roaming entertainment; and more. Beastly Ball tickets are $1,500 per person. For more info, call (323) 644-9105 or visit: www.lazoo.org/beastlyball

Cirque du Soleil on Tour with “Amaluna”

Prepare yourself for a Cirque du Soleil experience like no other with their new traveling show, Amaluna. The big top performance will bring you ever closer to the spectacle, taking you on a journey of everlasting courage and bravery through mesmerizing feats of strength.

Loosely based and inspired by William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, Amaluna tells the story of an island of goddesses that is uncovered by a group of weary travelers washed by up a terrible storm. As time passes, love blooms between the native princess and one of the young men. Though love comes at a price, as their connection is tested throughout with themes of femininity, renewal, rebirth, and balance.

Intergalactic

With the clever use of a revolving stage, every seat offers a clear view of the awe-inspiring performance. Every moment is filled with stunning visuals, bringing the story to life in a way that only Cirque du Soleil can.

Intergalactic

The performance opens and closes with a mesmerizing silk-like ribbon that floats mid-air on stage with the use of multiple fans installed in the stage.  The tranquility is met with a pair of uni-cyclists that blends seemingly comparable to a figure skating duet.  A storm rages on with aerial strap artists that fill the upper half of the big top.  The princess’s nanny makes a humorous love connection with one of the sailors throughout the show.  A needed shift in tone to break the intensity between the series of death-dying acts.

Intergalactic

Navigating thru a forest of pole dancers, the princess is found expressing her physicality in and around a water bowl that is used numerous of times with other acts.  Her strength is shown with balancing feats of whimsy and her serenity by effortlessly flowing thru the water bowl.  The island’s warriors demonstrate their tenacity with a series of interchanging uneven bars.

Intergalactic

After the brief intermission, the hits just keep on coming.  The shipwrecked sailors propel themselves on the teeter board escaping capture.  Palm fronds of various lengths are balanced on one another in an act everyone will want to hold in their breath.  Tipping over the smallest stick sent a chain reaction that demonstrated the delicate balance of any relationship.  This patient act single-handily brought the audience to their feet.

Intergalactic

A single row of performers gets a surreal bonus with the use of the rotating stage that helps the audience grasp the illusion of a thousand arm dancer.  The love struck sailor utilizes a long pole in a bid to win the princess’ affections.  In a visually appealing gesture, the princess’ pet lizard quite literally peals a layer “skin” off his arms before engaging the audience with his juggling skills atop the water bowl set piece.

Intergalactic

In the final act, a group of acrobatics ends with evening with a high note.  A delicate mix of gymnastics and ballet that crescendos with a woman atop of three men on standing on top of one another.  There was even a moment of what can only be described as a four-person handstand (three men on the stage floor and one woman on top).  It’s safe to say that every performer on stage brought the audience up in a wave of standing ovations.

Intergalactic

It must also be noted that the individual members of the live band were notably brought away from confinement in an area off or slightly on stage.  At various points in the show, they were right there on the same stage and steps as those of the acrobats.  A very much appreciated acknowledgment of their skills and equally valuable members of the show not shown to be cast out of audience view.

Intergalactic

Amaluna is visual and audio wonder not be missed for any fan of the Cirque du Soleli brand.  It will leave you with piecing together the themes and symbolism of each act that brings together a sense of awe. Make sure to book your tickets and see the show, now playing at the La Waterfront until May 26th.
