The Disney Diaries: Disneyland After Dark 90s Night!

Where are all my 90s kids?!

It’s time to turn back the clock, grab your fanny pack, and prepare your mix tape, Disneyland has gone totally 90s. Let’s take a closer look at Disneyland’s exclusive Disney After Dark event! The start of the evening had us gathered outside the gate, eagerly waiting to enter a “whole new world” of excitement. As soon as saw the train station lit up in bold neon colors, we knew we were in for a unique experience.

The event kicked off with a special fireworks show set to the tune of Disney Afternoon shows such as DuckTales and the Gummy Bears. My group and I took it all in at “It’s a Small World”, which was an appropriate setting since that path was turned into “Disney Afternoon Avenue”, filled with special themed photo ops.

90s Nite
We met our fave 90s hunk Hercules at the Royal Theater!

Characters were out in droves throughout the park and you could find yourself bumping into Scrooge McDuck, singing about squashed bananas with Rafiki, hanging out with Timon and the Fantasmic Monkeys. My personal favorite of the evening was getting to meet Goofy and Max, dressed as the pop sensation, Powerline. The wait time to meet each character was pretty long, but Disney made sure there were plenty of other ways to enjoy the evening.

90s Nite
Main Street U.S.A. got a 90s night makeover with some new projections

Music played a huge part of setting the tone for 90s Nite. Tomorrowland Terrace featured a “punk band”, which was really more like a cover band that featured 90s artist such as No Doubt and Smashmouth.  A DJ was stationed right in front of the ‘Partners” statue facing up Main Street USA, playing 90s hits from N*SYNC, Backstreet Boys, and Britney Spears.

Yet, the highlight of the night came from my journey to the Mark Twain. Every hour on the hour, the R&B group, The Sound, sang acapella hits from hit artists like TLC and Boys 2 Men. You may recognize the group from the Festival of Holidays in Disney California Adventure. The experience truly was the most unique and memorable trip I’ve ever had around the Rivers of America.

90s Nite
The Sound serenading guests on the Mark Twain Riverboat, my favorite moment of the evening

The fun didn’t stop there, as Disney also offered us exclusive themed food items, bringing that classic childhood vibe front and center. Some of the standout items were the bacon cheddar popcorn, PB&J churro, donut holes nachos, and bagel pizza bites. There was so much to try, though it was safe to say that the tropical punch dip pickles were a bit of a miss for me. Even so, I appreciate Disneyland bringing back the tropical punch craze.

If that wasn’t enough, some exclusive merchandise made its way into the parks for the evening. Right off the bat, there was a huge line to get into Emporium to snag a 90s Nite shirt and pin. Both items sold out, which was no surprise. Annual Passholders also received an exclusive button, featuring the 90s Nite print logo on it.

90s Nite
As you enter the queue for Indiana Jones, they passed out decoders to reveal the hidden messages inside.

One of the best offerings of the night came from a throwback to the opening of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye”. When the ride first opened in 1995, a special decoder was handed out when you got in line, allowing guests to make sense of the phrases and symbols written on the temple walls throughout the attraction. For one night only, we got a chance to relive that experience, which gave us all something to do while waiting to join Indy on his latest adventure.

Overall, the night was a success, giving Disneyland a chance to fit in a lot of classic material and memories. The 90s were such a unique time for Disney and the Disneyland Resort. It was exciting to see how they brought that vibe back to us in 2019. This is one super rad event I hope they bring back in the future. Until then, we will just have to wait and see what other magic awaits!

First Look: The Highly Anticipated and Innovative New Epic Adventure, “Jurassic World—The Ride,”

Universal Studios Hollywood unveils the first look of its eagerly awaited mega-attraction, “Jurassic World—The Ride,” as anticipation grows for its grand opening this summer.

Leaping from the silver screen to the theme park, “Jurassic World—The Ride” will immerse guests into newly themed environments and breathe new life into dimensional animatronic dinosaurs, including some all-new fan favorites featured in the Jurassic World films from Universal Pictures and Amblin Entertainment.

This ambitious ride is being reimagined under the direction of the award-winning and inspired minds at Universal Creative, the Academy Award®-winning special-effects visionaries at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), a division of Lucasfilm, Ltd., the brand stewards at Universal Pictures and acclaimed filmmakers Steven Spielberg, Colin Trevorrow and Frank Marshall.

The state-of-the-art attraction will debut an original storyline that takes place within the theme park as depicted in Jurassic World. It will feature additional new dinosaurs from the film, lush scenic design, and ground-breaking technology that has yet to be experienced within a theme park.

The aesthetics of “Jurassic World—The Ride” will be dramatically enhanced, welcoming guests to a reimagined space reflective of the Jurassic World films. A fresh, new entry statement, stonework landscaping and a contemporary redesign of the iconic pillars illuminated with billowing flames will support a prominent “Jurassic World” marquee logo.

Engaging queue-line videos featuring facts and information about the dinosaurs within the ride set the tone for the adventure ahead, as guests learn more about these imposing prehistoric inhabitants that first roamed the earth more than 65 million years ago.

And the daring expedition begins.

Once aboard specially designed rafts, guests will navigate the lush environs of dense vegetation, traversing new areas besieged with towering dinosaurs meandering just an arm’s length away from visitors. Encounters with such docile creatures as the Stegosaurus and Parasaurolophus will quickly turn awry as predatory Velociraptors and Dilophosaurus begin to wreak havoc, turning guests from spectators to prey. When the Tyrannosaurus rex begins to battle one of the attraction’s new behemoth dinosaurs, the rafts will spill down a treacherous 84-foot waterfall as the sole means of escape.

Located adjacent to the ride will be a new elaborately themed “Raptor Encounter” where Blue, the most beloved and deadly Velociraptor from the Jurassic World franchise, and her beta Raptors will engage guests in daring face-to-face encounters.

In addition, a new interactive “Dino Play” area will incorporate educational components within an inspired space where children of all ages can partake in excavations and investigate giant dinosaur fossils.

With so much to see and do at Universal Studios Hollywood, the all-new 2019 Season Pass invites guests to experience the fun throughout the year for $149 when purchased online. Blackout dates and restrictions apply. Visit www.UniversalStudiosHollywood.com for more details.

Your Intergalactic Guide to Star Wars Celebration Chicago

We are now less than a month away from Star Wars Celebration Chicago and to help prepare you for the biggest Star Wars event in the galaxy, we have put together a special intergalactic field guide piecing together some of the exciting facts, details, and surprises revealed so far leading into next month’s epic extravaganza into one place.

New Ticketing and Queue-Based System

Celebrations past have tried multiple ways to bring the world of Star Wars to the thousands of fans who are lucky enough to venture the convention hall, including traditional queues, wristbands, and overnight campouts. From JJ Abrams’ iconic pizza feast to Rian Johnson’s surprise overnight visit to fans, each Celebration has done something different. Celebration Chicago is no exception, bringing a new virtual queue reservations system and lottery to the table.

Flashback to Celebration Anaheim's wristband system for the Celebration Stage panel events.

The full details, which can be reviewed in detail here, go over new setup for the convention’s largest events, happening on the legendary Celebration Stage, as well as exclusive merchandise offerings that will be a test pilot for the event’s new system.

For the first time, fans will make virtual LIGHTSPEED panel reservations through the soon to be released, Celebration App. For the convention’s largest events, held on the Celebration Stage, fans will be put into a lottery for their chance to be part of the event, with those who do not make it in being given the option to view the main event at the Galaxy and Twin Suns Stages through live stream.

The event badges are tied in the system, having a special QR code for the first time in Celebration’s 20 year run. Each code will allow a one time, non-transferable registration that will allow reservations to be submitted. It’s a well-conceived plan, but there is a great risk, as this is definitely a much larger world than fans are used to.

Stage Setup

For those new to Celebration, or even for those who need a refresher, here is a full list of stages that will be used at this year’s event. Each convention to date has had an almost identical structure for some of the convention’s most popular panels and presentations. In Celebration’s past, we have been awed with live performances by John Williams, intimate talks with Star Wars legends, as well as epic trailer reveals. With the big reveal of Episode IX just days away, who knows what Celebration Chicago will bring. A full list of stages is found below!

Breaking: Toy Story 4 FULL Trailer Now Available!

The toys hit the road in “Toy Story 4” alongside friends—new and old—foes and, of course, Forky. Filmmakers welcomed Christina Hendricks, Keanu Reeves and Ally Maki to the toy box today, revealing the three new characters they help bring to life.

Among the new faces is GABBY GABBY, an adorable, talking pull-string doll from the 1950s. But unfortunately for her, a manufacturing defect in her pull-string voice box has left her sounding anything but adorable. She has spent more than 60 years forgotten in the depths of a jam-packed antique store—her only companions are a band of voiceless ventriloquist dummies. Gabby Gabby knows someone will want her if only she can find a working voice box to repair hers.

Gabby Gabby is voiced by Christina Hendricks. “It became obvious right away that Christina was the perfect actress to play Gabby Gabby,” says director Josh Cooley. “She has the ability to sound inviting and friendly, then subtly become cold and terrifying in just a few words. It still gives me chills when I see Gabby’s introduction in the film. Also, Christina told me that she preferred playing with ventriloquist dummies over dolls as a kid. That’s when I knew it was meant to be.”

DUKE CABOOM is a 1970s toy based on Canada’s greatest stuntman. Riding his powerful Caboom stunt-cycle, Duke is always prepared to show off his stunt poses with confidence and swagger. However, Woody learns quickly that Duke has an Achilles heel: He has never been able to do the awesome stunts advertised in his own toy commercial. For years, Duke has been sitting in an antique store, constantly reliving the failures of his tragic past.

Duke Caboom is voiced by another great Canadian, Keanu Reeves. “The first time Josh [Cooley] and I talked with Keanu about the role, Keanu became Duke Caboom,” says producer Jonas Rivera. “Keanu was asking great questions that dug deep to find the soul of the character. At one point he stood up on the table in the middle of Pixar’s atrium and struck poses while proclaiming victory. It was so funny. It’s all in the movie and it’s all Keanu.”

GIGGLE MCDIMPLES is a miniature plastic doll from the 1980s Giggle McDimples toy line. Giggle is Bo Peep’s best friend. Small enough to perch on Bo’s shoulder, Giggle is Bo’s confidant, supporter and advisor. “Giggle is Bo’s Jiminy Cricket—we’re able to get insight on Bo through their relationship together,” says Cooley. “Giggle is definitely the smallest toy in the Toy Story universe. She’s been stepped on, vacuumed up, and probably put up a kid’s nose in her time.”

Ally Maki voices the tiny character. “Giggle McDimples literally pops on the screen because of Ally’s personality and infectious energy,” says Cooley. “Nobody can laugh like Ally Maki.”

BENSON is a classic, antique ventriloquist dummy, and Gabby Gabby’s right hand. He leads a small group of ventriloquist dummies that serve as Gabby’s henchmen. With no person to give them a voice, these silent toys patrol the antique store with a looming quietness that is inherently unsettling.

“The dummies are, by far, some of the creepiest characters we’ve ever created,” says producer Mark Nielsen. “Our animators really leaned into the truth in materials for how our ventriloquist dummies move. Dummies’ bodies are soft with no structure, so our dummies’ arms just dangle and their legs bend backwards. Throw in their fixed expressions with their wide eyes and big hinged jaws and they’re nightmare material—in the best way possible.”

Woody (voice of Tom Hanks) has always been confident about his place in the world, and that his priority is taking care of his kid, whether that’s Andy or Bonnie. So when Bonnie’s beloved new craft-project-turned-toy, Forky (voice of Tony Hale), declares himself as “trash” and not a toy, Woody takes it upon himself to show Forky why he should embrace being a toy. But when Bonnie takes the whole gang on her family’s road trip excursion, Woody ends up on an unexpected detour that includes a reunion with his long-lost friend Bo Peep (voice of Annie Potts). After years of being on her own, Bo’s adventurous spirit and life on the road belie her delicate porcelain exterior. As Woody and Bo realize they’re worlds apart when it comes to life as a toy, they soon come to find that’s the least of their worries.

Directed by Josh Cooley (“Riley’s First Date?”), and produced by Jonas Rivera (“Inside Out,” “Up”) and Mark Nielsen (associate producer “Inside Out”), Disney·Pixar’s “Toy Story 4” ventures to U.S. theaters on June 21, 2019.

Aladdin Debuts Full Length Trailer and New Theatrical Poster

A whole new world of imagination is just around the corner, as Disney has released it’s first full-length trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Aladdin. In the trailer, fans get a closer look at the expansive story, including a better glimpse of Will Smith’s genie.

The film’s previous teaser, which was met with mixed reviews, was the first time viewers were given a chance to look at Smith’s version of the classic blue character we’ve all grown to cherish. This trailer gives Disney the opportunity to silence any doubts about the character, providing much more screen time for Genie while not forgetting to showcase the film’s lead characters and iconic moments.

With just month’s away from the Aladdin’s big debut, are you excited for the film? Aladdin stars Will Smith as the Genie; Mena Massoud as Aladdin; Naomi Scott as Jasmine; Marwan Kenzari as Jafar; Navid Negahban as the Sultan; Nasim Pedrad as Dalia and Billy Magnussen as Prince Anders. Bathing in Beauty and Luxury at Belmond El Encanto in Santa Barbara

Belmond El Encanto is a luxurious hideaway in the Santa Barbara hills (photo - Greg Aragon)

The Belmond El Encanto hotel has welcomed discerning guests since 1918. Perched in the hills above Santa Barbara, this iconic hideaway offers serene seclusion in a relaxed, yet luxurious setting of lush gardens, winding paths and private bungalows. It is has been described as Hollywood glamour in a modern classic and after my recent visit, I can see why the likes of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard were regulars to the resort.

My getaway to El Encanto began recently when a friend and I checked into a gorgeous, deluxe premier bungalow. Immersed in a forest of gardens and trees, the 650-sq-ft bungalow was private and elegant. It was highlighted by a large main room with hardwood floors, a king bed, sofa and chairs, a cozy fireplace and lots of windows. The room also boasted a mini-fridge, Nespresso coffee-maker, iPod dock station, office desk with Wi-Fi, and a widescreen HDTV.

The bungalow also came with a private patio with tranquil garden views, and a huge, marble bathroom with heated stone floors, deep soaking tub, and a separate, glass shower.

When not relaxing in the room in my Belmond bathrobe with a glass of Santa Barbara wine, I enjoyed the rest of the seven-acre hotel property. A landmark since the 1920s, the Belmond El Encanto completed a $134-million renovation in 2013 to become Santa Barbara’s only Forbes Five-Star resort for three consecutive years. Today the hotel features 92 California-styled suites and bungalows, overlooking the Santa Barbara “American Riviera” and the Pacific Ocean. The architecture is a mixture of Craftsman-style and Spanish Colonial.

The zero-edge pool offers relaxation and great ocean views (photo – belmond.com)

One of my favorite hotel spots beside my room was the zero-edge pool. Overlooking the ocean, the heated, outdoor, saline pool is a great place to absorb the Santa Barbara sun and charm. Below the pool is the hotel gym, where I worked out after lazing poolside.

For dinner, my friend and I experienced the Belmond Dining Room. Offering contemporary California-coastal cuisine, the restaurant is known for artisanal ingredients and rich flavors, matching the region’s culinary abundance. For our meal we sat on the outdoor terrace, admiring the lights of Downtown Santa Barbara twinkling below.

Our dinner began with Hawaiian kampachi sashimi appetizer with lime caviar, celery, black olive, pineapple vinaigrette, and sumac. We followed this with a glass of Flor De Campo Pinot Noir from Santa Barbara County and an heirloom beet salad with cooked and raw beets, halloumi cheese, local figs, caramelized sesame seeds, and tahini dressing.

For the main course, I devoured wild king salmon with cauliflower espuma, heirloom carrots, crispy quinoa, and smoked tomato jam. My friend enjoyed Wagyu ribeye steak with fingerling potatoes, seaweed tapenade, watercress, and miso mustard.

The El Encanto has a classy dining room, bar and lounge area (photo – Greg Aragon)

After dinner, we retreated to the lounge/bar area, where we sipped wine beside a large fireplace and listened to a classical guitarist. We concluded the evening by the fireplace in our own room.

In the morning I had an incredible, rejuvenating deep tissue massage at the El Encanto Spa. The full-service spa offers a range of treatments and services including a romantic couples treatment room, manicure/pedicure stations, dedicated facial suites, massage and wet rooms, private outdoor terrace and relaxation lounge. My relaxing, 50-minute rubdown was a perfect complement to the luxurious Belmond surroundings I found myself in.

After the massage, I joined my friend for a 10-minute walk to the Old Mission Santa Barbara (www.santabarbaramission.org). Founded by Spanish Franciscans in 1786, the mission sits on 13 acres overlooking the ocean. The grounds include the beautiful Mission church, Historic Cemetery and Mausoleum, and multiple lush gardens, including La Huerta Historical Garden, which features authentic and ancient Mission-era plants, trees and paintings.

The Mission also houses a nine-room museum of historical artwork and artifacts, which includes the Chumash Room, featuring Native American artifacts, along with traditional crafts and tools; a re-creation of a 17th century kitchen with original 1790’s adobe wall and 1805 front stone wall; a Padre’s bedroom with chess set, Bishop’s glasses, staff and desk set; and a Trades room with agricultural, blacksmithing, and weaving tools, as well as historical mission-era photos.

Back at the El Encanto ,we had lunch in the lounge and then watched the turtles play frolic in super slow-motion in the lily pond.
