Oswald Returns With All-New Animation Short

Oswald

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit returns to the studio that bears his creator’s name – Walt Disney Animation Studios – with an all-new animated short, over 94 years since Disney’s last Oswald cartoon.

Created by Disney Animation’s hand-drawn animation team to help celebrate the start of Disney 100 Years of Wonder that marks 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, the short, appropriately titled “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit,” is directed by famed animator Eric Goldberg (“How To Stay At Home (Starring Goofy),” “Pocahontas,” “Fantasia/2000”) and produced by Emmy Award®-winning producer Dorothy McKim (“Prep & Landing,” “Get A Horse!,” “Meet The Robinsons”) and available on Walt Disney Animation Studios’ YouTube channel.

“On the eve of Disney’s 100th anniversary, it was such a joy to create the first new Oswald short from our studio since 1928,” says McKim. “Our hand-drawn animation team – including our hand-drawn legends Mark Henn, Randy Haycock and Eric Goldberg, as well our wonderful team of 2D apprentices, had a ball animating in the style of Oswald’s era.”

“Oswald is such a plucky scamp. We wanted to bring Oswald back, and in the short, he literally returns to his original home, the movie screen,” says Goldberg. “We wanted to have Oswald do all of the ‘squash-and-stretch,’ ‘rubber hose’-animation style, celebrating that first generation of Walt Disney’s artists.”

Oswald

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is considered Walt Disney’s first breakout animated star, and widely considered one of the first characters in animation history to feature a unique personality. Walt Disney introduced Oswald to moviegoers in 1927 with the short “Trolley Troubles.” 26 Oswald short films were created by Walt Disney and his team, with the final Disney shorts starring the character releasing in late summer 1928, the same year Walt lost creative control over his beloved rabbit.

In 2006, Disney CEO Bob Iger made an unprecedented deal with NBC/Universal, that included permitting sportscaster Al Michaels to contract with NBC in exchange for the return of Oswald to his original home. Since then, Oswald has appeared in video games and merchandise, an animated short, and in Disney theme parks globally.

In conjunction with the animated short, Disney is also today launching an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit Snapchat lens globally that allows users to channel Oswald using AR technology.

Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Unveils New Scene Details

Tiana
A First Look at a new scene from Tiana's Bayou Adventure coming to the Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts in 2024.

We are going down the bayou and learning some of the newest details for Disney Parks’ upcoming attraction, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, which will feature familiar characters and elements from the hit animated film, Princess and the Frog, as well as bring fans their first look at new characters that are being created exclusively for this new imagined experience.

Courtesy of the Disney Parks Blog, a new scene has debuted, giving guests the chance to explore the exciting and music filled world of Mardi Gras season, with Princess Tiana and her jazz-loving friend, Louis preparing for a one-of-a-kind celebration for the people of New Orleans.

Tiana

The new scene will act as the first drop for the attraction, where guests will encounter these new characters, alongside fan favorites. Here´s an excerpt of some of the exciting things that guests will soon get to experience directly from Carmen Smith, Senior Vice President of Creative Development-Product/Content and Inclusive Strategies.

As you can see here, fireflies will light up the night and invite you deeper into the bayou … almost like they’re waving you forward. What you can’t tell from this rendering – so you’ll just have to trust me on this one – is that beautiful zydeco music will fill the air. Zydeco is a special blend of rhythm and blues that was born in Louisiana, and when you hear it, you’ll feel like you’ve truly stepped into Tiana’s world.

Here you’ll find Louis, who explains where this amazing music is coming from. Tiana made some new friends out here – a band full of adorable critters, including an otter, a rabbit, a racoon, a beaver, a turtle and others. The band members sing and play instruments made of natural materials they found in the bayou. It feels like they may have a bigger role to play in this story … but we’ll just have to wait and see on that one.

Like so many musical genres, zydeco brings together the sounds and styles of many cultures. We wanted that spirit reflected in this scene (and throughout the attraction) so that all our guests feel welcome to join in the celebration. It’s emblematic of what we’re always striving for with our attractions – bringing people of different backgrounds together through timeless Disney stories. This new musical adventure provides us with a song sheet to write that concept into reality.

For anyone visiting the Disneyland or Walt Disney World Resorts, please note that Splash Mountain will be closing to help bring this attraction to life, and as the Parks Blog has revealed, Disney World has announced that Splash Mountain in Magic Kingdom Park will close on January 23rd, 2023. Additional information about Splash Mountain at the Disneyland Resort will be shared at a later date.

Winnie the Pooh: The Musical Review

Disney

As once so famously said by a bear of very little brain, “sometimes the smallest things take up the most room in your heart”, and when looking at the West Coast debut of Disney’s Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation, it’s hard to disagree. Our favorite silly old bear is bringing all of his pals from the Hundred Acre Wood and preparing for a new adventure that is very clearly as sweet as honey.

Much like Pooh himself, this production has a very big heart, sticky stuck full of touching moments and family-filled fun that is perfect for Winnie the Pooh fans both young and ninety nine. Bouncing and trouncing into a 60 minute runtime, the show creates a splendid mix of theatrical artistry that is all made possible with the stunning use of life sized puppetry, practical stage elements, and an endless amount of imagination.

The entire production excels by staying simple, giving its small and mighty ensemble of players the chance to unlock a very genuine and special connection with the audience without the heavy use of over the top effects and distracting smoke and mirrors.

Owl Pooh Musical

It all comes down on the shoulders of five puppeteers, each taking on multiple roles to bring Pooh, Piglet, Tigger, Eeyore, Rabbit, Owl, Kanga, and Roo to life on stage with ease, delivering a magical experience that pulls the audience right into the story; making it no challenge at all for these players to blend into the background and allowing their plush counterparts to shine through. You really believe in these characters, just as you would if they were on the silver screen or in the pages of your cherished book of adventures.

Yet, it would be hard not to notice the level of enthusiasm that is placed in each and every part of the production, creating a contagious sense of joy. It really speaks to the level of care that went into bringing this story off the pages of A.A Milne’s classic tales onto the stage for all to experience in this new format. The end result is a straightforward and flawless performance that plays right into the very center of the honey pot that Pooh covets so tenderly.

WINNIE THE POOH 10 5 21 0533 PJZEDIT v001

This production also makes sure to hold onto the magical musical musings that have helped made Winnie the Pooh such a staple in the Disney community, bringing forward a brand new score for fans to experience. Composed by Nate Edmondson, the new score features iconic elements of songs written by the legendary Sherman Brothers, including Winnie the Pooh, The Blustery Day, The Wonderful Thing About Tigger’s, Whoop-De-Dooper Bounce, and A.A. Milne’s The More It Snows.

Tigger and Piglet Pooh Musical

It also lends itself to many familiar story and character elements that are presented in an easy-to-follow series of mini expositions, making this the perfect introduction into musical theater for even the smallest of children. It’s an incredibly fun and memorable experience, staying true to the core of what has made Pooh and all the creatures of the wood so special for over 95 years. It’s a gift that you will not want to miss this holiday season!

Winnie the Pooh: The New Musical Stage Adaptation will run on a limited engagement with showtimes through December 30th at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Ticket prices range from $35 to $99 with special VIP and Meet and Greet packages. Make sure to come see what will be sure to be one of the most fun and charming live experiences of the holiday season before another blustery day blows it away!

Willow Revives Legacy in Disney+ Debut

Willow

Legacy and legend, two epic words that are filled with mythos, power, and expectation; one cannot help but wonder what that has in store for Disney Plus’ newest adventure, Willow. Thankfully, fans will come to find that they can breathe a sigh of relief when jumping into the series.

With a story that directly follows up the cult 80s fantasy classic, Willow is a brilliant addition to the classic film, branching into a new generation that will excite fans new and old. Lucasfilm has really outdone themselves in this mystical adventure for the ages that blends together plenty of classic nods to the original, fun surprises, and edge of your seat action that doesn’t steal away from the rest of the story. Though in a world dominated by Star Wars and Indiana Jones, where did the idea come for Willow to return?

The tale began early in Disney’s reign over Lucasfilm vault, and according to Willow himself, Warrick Davis, was in talks a lot longer than fans may have anticipated. It all comes back to the production of Solo: A Star Wars Story, and in an exclusive press interview, Davis and head writer for the Willow series, Jon Kasdan, discussed what it took to bring the world of Willow back for a new adventure.

Disney

“I mean, there was the… there was the impulse certainly between Ron and Warwick and myself to continue this story, and return to this world. And I came at it as a fan, and they came at it both as the creators, and they found a champion in me, and I kept fighting and sort of hoping that we’d get a chance to go back,” Kasdan shared.

Though Davis also admitted he didn’t know if he would ever get to see Willow return, but the interest was definitely always there, never forgetting the masses of loyal fans who helped make Willow stand out in a crowd filled with fantastical stories and tales.

“For years it’s been talked about, not by anyone official but by the fans. They’ve constantly pestered me, saying “when are we going to see a sequel to that movie?” And it’s a question that I could never answer…until I met Jon Kasdan, who I understood was also a fan. And I wondered on the set of Solo who had let him onto set. You know, no fans allowed here, because he was obsessed, talking about Willow.

In an era filled with exclusive streaming content, it takes a special kind of magic to stand out with powerhouse franchises such as Amazon’s Rings of Power, HBO’s Game of Thrones adaptations, as well as Netflix’s School for Good and Evil. What separates Willow from the ever growing competition is its deep connection to its roots, and the magic touch of Lucasfilm’s creative team.

Like many of the early ILM era films, this project has a real sense of craftsmanship and world building, brought to life in a way where fans can recapture that sense of whimsy seen in the Lucas era, all the while pushing forward into the unknown through the use of this new cast.

It’s a passing of the torch done right, with a huge gamble in doing so paying off. As fans watch the story unfold, it will be difficult not to see how genuine the connections are through the use of veteran storytelling and the new cast willing to take the leap and make their own mark within the legacy of Willow.

“With every episode you’re sort of walking the line between, between making it familiar and satisfying what fans expect from the brand Willow, and then trying to push it forward and tell a story that’s surprising and unexpected. And you know, the great weapon we had with us was Warwick, who just lent the whole universe of Willow credibility, and the moment you see him on screen, you suddenly believe these six other foolish kids could somehow fit into that world, and really inhabit it. And they did so so beautifully and with such gusto and enthusiasm. And authenticity, that it was sort of an amazing thing to watch all these things come together, and become something that feels like a progression from the movie as much as a love letter to it”, said Kasdan.

Disney

Davis is joined by Solo alumn, Erin Kellyman, as well as newcomers Dempsey Bryk (Airk), Ruby Cruz (Kit), Ellie Bamber (Dove), Amar Chadha-Patel (Boorman), and Spider-Man star Tony Revolori (Graydon).

Kellyman is a true standout, bringing in the same powerful energy felt in both her outings in Solo, as well as her work in the Marvel’s Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Yet, she’s not alone with Chada-Patel and Ruby Cruz brandishing their swashbuckling skills in stunning fashion.

Don’t let that distract you from the slower moving moments in their story though, as every member of this new ensemble comes together and lends some much needed heart that helps unfold a beautiful balance of drama and action in this early introduction to the series. A big portion of that comes from Ellie Bamber, who introduces a new perspective for fans in her role as Dove and definitely is a player to keep an eye on as the series continues.

Davis spoke about his new ensemble with an abundance of admiration, helping him overcome the challenges of returning to his legendary role all these years later. “The rest of the cast there, these dare I say young cast, were great support to me, and immensely helpful getting me through the whole process.”

“But yeah, I mean, they’re the challenges. Also, doing the original material justice, I suppose. You know, having the kind of, the weight of the… the fans with me, wanting to do the very best job that we could, and deliver a series that everyone could enjoy, be it the fans of the original and the new audience we hope to bring to this show as well.”

In looking back at his time on set, Davis also reminded everyone of what makes this so special, even looking beyond just the initial episodes of this new series. “What makes projects special are the people, not the… not the material, the character, it’s the people you work with.

You know, this amazing ensemble cast we have here, and Jon our writer, the various directors we had throughout the series as well. And also the creatives at the top of the ladder, namely Kathleen Kennedy and Ron Howard himself as well, presiding over everything. He was kind of like our Yoda, I suppose.

You can experience the first two episodes of Willow, now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Stay tuned for more exclusive details on Willow, coming soon right here on SocalThrills!

“Annie” Theatre Review

Annie

Leapin’ Lizards! Annie is back in town! Annie is the heartwarming story of an orphan named Annie in a 1933 New York Orphanage who is an optimist at her core. She was left at the orphanage with two clues that suggest her parents will return for her, but 11 years later, they have not. Miss Hannigan, the head of the Orphanage, is cruel to the children, as she sees her role as a means to an end and not a passion.

Oliver Warbucks, the richest man in the United States, is set to have an orphan brought to his home for two weeks over Christmas. In that time, Warbucks grows close to Annie and decides to adopt her, but the two weeks are not quite as seamless as they thought.

From the moment the house rules were delivered by the child actors, my heart was warmed. However, for me, the vocal delivery in Annie—specifically by Annie—can make or break the show. The show opens with “Maybe” and Bronte Harrison was a stand-out immediately as Molly. Her performance broke my heart! Ellie Pulsifer gave an amazing and heartfelt performance as Annie that was sung with soul, and not with a cheesy over-the-top-accent. “It’s the Hard Knock Life” was presented wonderfully with the right amount of theatrics and dancing to showcase the talents of the actors.

Pulsifer continues to deliver crisp and emotional vocals through “We’d Like to Thank You”. Addison, a rescue dog, wooed the entire audience in her performance as Sandy, the street dog Annie finds when she first escapes the Orphanage. Miss Hannigan is a complicated character because she is written so funny, but you’re also supposed to hate her.  Stefanie Londino delivered on both in a way that was refreshing from other performances I’ve seen. Londino (Miss Hannigan) delivered a performance that was physically funny and well-spoken/sang without going too far into being a caricature.

Hands down, the stand-out vocalist on this tour is Julia Nicole Hunter as Grace Farrell, WOW! What a voice! Every song she sang was an absolute delight. Christopher Swan as Oliver Warbucks was great. Despite his character’s gruff demeanor on introduction, Swan performed in a way that allowed Warbucks to be warm and likeable from the start; a foreshadowing to the person we would eventually know him to be. “Easy Street” was a hilarious number, carried primarily by Stefanie Londino (Miss Hannigan) and Krista Curry (Lily). Curry’s character voice for her role as Lily is grating in the best way, reminiscent of Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors or Lina Lamont in Singin’ In The Rain.

Mark Woodard also did a great job in the role of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. How quickly I got completely engrossed in caring about these characters said a lot about the acting prowess of the Cast. I cried at least three times, maybe it’s seeing the show again as a mom.

The sets were beautiful, simple, and effective. Minimal set pieces were utilized and were able to be quickly moved in and out of scenes by the ensemble. Wilson Chin did a great job building not only the setting, but the feeling of a scene, through use of color and props. Chin’s sets and the actors were beautifully highlighted by the lighting design of Philip Rosenberg.

The costume design by Alejo Vietti was lovely, especially for the celebration at Oliver Warbucks’ home over Christmas. Annie’s purple coat stood out against the blandness of a New York winter in a way that is symbolic of her bright-eyed optimism in the face of never-ending adversity. If you are looking for some optimism to kick off this Holiday season, head down to grab your tickets to share in the wonder of Annie.
