Camping and Glamping at San Diego KOA Resort

San Diego

Some destinations have a way of putting you in vacation mode the second you arrive. San Diego KOA Resort is one of these places. The moment we pulled into the campground, the sight of shimmering pool water, luxury cabins, rustic tent sites, and colorful RVs put me in a state of happy relaxation.

My recent getaway to the KOA began when we checked into a spacious Deluxe Cabin overlooking the pool. With enough room to sleep six people, the cabin came with a full bedroom, a small room with bunk beds, a loft with a bed, a bathroom with tub and shower, and full kitchen with fridge, microwave, coffee maker, stove and oven, pots and pans, silverware, and a small bar with chairs.

The cabin, more “glamping” than camping, also boasted a large wooden porch with couch and chairs, and a side yard with fire pit and a BBQ with a full tank of propane.

When not relaxing in the cabin, we had fun playing around the 40-acre campground, which offered everything we needed for a mini, three-day glamping adventure. We enjoyed renting a four-wheel bike, jumping on a giant bouncy pillow, mining for treasures, playing in a kiddie playground, sipping local beer, and lounging by the huge swimming pool.

Located a few steps from our cabin porch, the resort swimming pool was an oasis. The area is surrounded by lush trees and features a shallow walk-in ramp into the water that is perfect for little kids. The area also offers private cabanas and two Jacuzzis. Right behind the pool is a playground with sand, slides and a big play structure.

Next to the pool is the Kids Club, where parents can purchase fun arts and crafts for the little ones. This is where we rented a four-wheel surrey bike to thoroughly explore the campsite. For an hour each morning, we pedaled around the property admiring beautiful, new RVs and stopping to chat with friendly fellow campers. The bike has a steering wheel, four sets of pedals and enough seats for four adults and two small kids up front. Not only is the bike fun for the whole family, but it is also a great workout for the legs!

Another exciting adventure at KOA San Diego is the Beach Treasure Dig, a realistic little mining operation where kids can hunt for treasures. As water rushes down two ming flumes into tracks filled with sand, kids use sifters to find precious gems and other valuables. In our case, I hid some coins in the sand that my son was super thrilled to find.

After mining, we walked a few feet to the Sand Castle Cafe for fresh pizza and cold local beer. Featuring al fresco dining with a farm-to-table Southern California flare, the cafe serves warm baked goods, pancake breakfast, breakfast burritos, burgers, gourmet pizza, farm fresh salads and treats.

While eating I overheard two gentlemen behind us talking about the campsite and its history. They turned out to be Ted Bell and his son Mike, the owners of the KOA San Diego. Ted, who is 92 now, founded the campsite in 1968, while working as a police officer for the City of Chula Vista. Back then the camp was five acres with only a few dozen sites.

“When we opened up in 1968 we were kind of an outdoor motel for tourists coming to San Diego,” says Mike Bell. “ But in the late 80s into the 90 we started transitioning into recreation and family resort focused. And a lot of people that come to the campground these days come to stay and spend all of their time in the park. They are not going to Sea World or the zoo or the beaches.”

Bell says that his guests now come from literally all over the world to experience San Diego weather and KOA comfort and outdoor charm.

After talking with the Bell’s we walked across the campsite to the giant red and yellow bouncy pillow. Measuring about 30 feet long by 15 feet wide, the air-filled pillow is like a big trampoline that makes you feel like you are jumping on mars. Next to here is a basketball court where I played a pick-up game with fellow campers.

Back at the cabin, we fired up the BBQ that came fully-equipped with a tank of propane. For dinner we grilled baby back ribs, potatoes, beans and veggies. We then had a memorable meal outside on our patio. After dinner, we threw some wood in the fire-pit, grabbed some extra long skewers, and made smores with marshmallows, graham crackers and chocolate bars.

Whether you have an RV, a camper van, or a tent, or want to sleep in a deluxe cabin or a rustic hut, the San Diego KOA Campground is one of San Diego’s most popular camping resorts and is a top-rated destination for family fun. The campground is located about 20 minutes from major San Diego attractions such as Sea World, The San Diego ZOO and San Diego Zoo’s Safari Park. The campsite is also pet-friendly and boasts a 7000 square-foot dog park.

The San Diego KOA Resort is located at 111 North 2nd Avenue, Chula Vista, CA 91910. For reservations call 888-566-1165 or visit: www.koa.com/campgrounds/san-diego

Review: Halloween Horror Nights 2022 at Universal Studios Hollywood

Halloween

Halloween Horror Nights has emerged at Universal Studios Hollywood with new haunted houses, new addition to the Terror Tram, returning favorites, and sinister wizards to scare up a frightful evening. There’s much to experience for the 2022 season building anticipation for many fans of this annual theme park tradition.

The streets are lined with Sideshow Creeps at New York Street as guests enter the park. It wouldn’t be a complete welcome without the billowing inferno of flame throwers bursting overhead atop of shipping crates. No live commentator or go-go dancers like in previous years, but turns out not sorely missed either. The Dia de los Muertos themed open area returns with open arms to the Universal Plaza. It’s a well-suited respite from rest of the park events with a bar, food, carnival game, and decorated set pieces for photo opportunities.

There’s even a backdrop that explains the legend of La Llorona for those not familiar with the fable tale before experiencing the accompanying and well-received haunted house. The character has been brought to life in previous seasons of the Halloween event, but it’s such a fan favorite to resist. And thankfully has been well-put together commanding respectable wait times. In the streets of Little Europe, and the exit of the La Lorona haunted house for that matter, is El Pueblo del Terror scare zone dedicated to Hispanic creatures of the night like el cucuy, chupacabra, el cadejo, mictlantecuhtla, tlahuelpuchi, and, of course, the weeping woman.

Stealthy bog monsters lurk in an eerily lit and wickedly decorated Haunted Forest tucked in the Animal Actors show plaza, just before the solitude of the restrooms. This area makes for a relatively quiet recluse from the main pathways and people watching.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is not only open to a pathway to more haunted houses, but also to Death Eaters lurking in the dark corners of Hogsmeade. Death Eaters Encounter abound in search of their next victim, or perhaps new followers to their cause. Green lighting and fog add-on to intimidating posture. Be on your guard and arm yourself with a wand and protection spell at the ready.

La Llorona: The Weeping Woman brings the tale of a woman who drowned her children and then herself back to terrify. Will you be the next children she tries to drown her sorrows? This haunted house is a huge fan favorite from past years, and for good reason. Easily the longest wait in the Upper Lot. Tucked around every corner is the decaying set design of a discarded mission. The weeping woman appears in various stages reaching from a horse-headed stilt walker to over-sized body devouring children from their beds. And along with the Dia de los Muertos plaza and El Pueblo del Terror scare zone, this center of the theme park made for a very cohesive thematic backdrop.

Universal Horror Hotel replaces The Walking Dead haunted house. The pathway is virtually unrecognizable with the exception of the first portion of the queue. A video clip plays to provide a back story of a 1920s Hollywood hotel owned and operated by a serial killer. Everything after the old “Don’t Open, Dead Inside” double-doors feels fresh. An elevator attack scene now makes its home here with a convincing thrashing of legs mid-air.

The scares inside has a The Shining meets Bates Motel atmosphere passing through hallways past doors to hotel rooms, bathroom, bedroom, and kitchen. A bloody reoccurring pattern shows up on walls and doors suggesting a sort of participation within a cult. A valiant effort to update the space for original content that fits with the surrounding area of the theme park. However, the entrance wasn’t very noticeable and the second half of the interior feels like there is much to be desired.

The Horrors of Blumhouse features a new double feature of scares with Freaky and The Black Phone. Freaky follows the body-switching horror comedy between a teenage girl and a serial killer. The Black Phone follows a cunning kidnapper to his hideout. Given the space the Blumhouse experience being placed in the queue for the Waterworld stunt show, the facade was cleverly fitted to be that of an abandoned video rental store. Another challenge was balancing the comedy into the horror of Freaky.

Turns out, it’s really, really hard to do because no portion of this house would make anyone chuckle. There were however plenty of sight gags to feast your eyes upon with a glass wine bottle shoved down a throat, toilet seat death, impalement to a wall, and body-switching action behind a false wall. Black twisting hallways and title cards move the days along as well as transitions between movies. The Black Phone segment seemed to have gotten less attention.

Guests will be able to pass through posters of missing children, the black phone, the kidnapper’s living room, the kitchen, and basement with bed mattress on the floor. But noticeable iconic moments from the movie such as a black van, black balloons, and basement staircase are absent. The takeaway here seems like the guests are supposed to have the perspective of the child victim.

The only scare character to make an appearance is the kidnapper. Unfortunately doesn’t use a spray can on his victims like depicted in the film adaptation. The experience begins and ends with a series of black twisting hallways, which we find less than favorable. Some other people will find that to be scary.

20220908 205220

Halloween is another returning favorite amongst diehard horror fans. And is quite relevant with the upcoming new “Halloween Ends” movie release in mid-October. This year focuses on the first movie with Dr. Loomis tracking down his murderous patient Michael Myers while stalking babysitter Laurie Strode.

Visitors inside the Myers house will be immersed in iconic moments like the tombstone of Judith Myers in the bedroom, billowing bed sheets, and a claustrophobic encounter with Michael switching his blade at you in the closet. The performers for Michael kept their body posture respectfully in character, the same could not be said of the Dr. Loomis performance. The haunted house easily wins over its execution and will not disappoint.

20220909 000722

Scarecrow: The Reaping comes high anticipated as a new incarnation of an original favorite maze to the event’s Orlando counterpoint. So this has a lot to live up to. Set in the Depression Era and events of the Dust Bowl, farmers are being overrun not only by famine, but by crows and scarecrows coming to life to make them on of their own.

It is obvious how much care was taken to creating this experience. Guests are taken back in time to a farmhouse and barn surrounded by all the fixins of corn, hay, and farming equipment. Be ready to navigate through curtains of cornstalks and animal intestines. This is a house worth going around for a second helping.

20220908 231827

Universal Monsters: Legends Collide pits Dracula, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man together like never before and lets them loose. While Orlando’s version centers its set location in the Egyptian dig site as part one of an overarching story, Hollywood’s version is part two taking place in London from a trading dock to a museum.

The creative team did not skip out on the prop design with everything contributing to the storytelling from maps of London, glowing amulets, and even screen-used statues from The Mummy film franchise. It helps when a haunted house based on Universal Monsters is built in a theme park attached to a working film studio with a giant warehouse full of movie props. Music artist Slash of Guns N’ Roses fame collaborates again with Universal for another banging, head-bobbing original soundtrack.

Can we get an album of Slash’s work of Universal haunted house music created already? I’m sure fans would love a copy produced on vinyl record. Notable set pieces sees Dracula emerging on an office window sill, a projection of flying bats coming together in the form of Dracula, then having the head vampire himself appear, and the “zombie sled” effect used effectively for Dracula’s brides and a swarm of mummies.

A lot of the set design choices were based on the classic monster pictures as seen from the Universal film library and then taking even more inspiration on real locations like Highgate Cemetery. Be sure to keep an eye out for Anubis inspired creature reinterpreted with the head of a wolf instead of a jackal.

20220908 233542

The Weeknd: After Hours Nightmare takes inspiration from the music artist and invites guests onto the set of his many music videos. I will admit, I am not the target audience for this experience as I am not familiar with the music industry. Having said that, the long waits seem to have captured the attention of those in the know. Being an outsider, I did not walk out hating it.

Felt more like I was walking from one twisted music video into another. A guest expressed it was a cool experience, especially if it was music that she actually listened to. Which I would have to agree with that statement. The concept of a music artist bringing his music videos and mindset to a lively ghoulish delight will appease fans of that genre.

20220908 232812

Killer Klowns From Outer Space returns to Halloween Horror Nights just as colorful and full of dark humor as ever. Not only a cult favorite, but a favorite with Universal fans as well. If you haven’t seen the 1988 horror-comedy movie, it’s widely available on many free streaming services. The title pretty much says it all. Alien beings in the form of over-the-top demonic looking clowns have come down from outer space, trap humans in cotton candy, and liquify them for consumption. Simple as that.

First you board the alien space ship shaped like a circus tent and into a blacklit fun house. Nothing sinister about that. Along the way will be shadow puppets, bathroom attacks, and pies ready to melt your entire body. Complete with cherry on top for the full effect.

Terror Tram features something both old AND new this season! Hollywood Henry returns to exact his revenge on the studio lot. Taking over the Psycho path from the Bates Motel to the mansion and the War of the Worlds set. Chainsaws buzz by your scampering feet. Cross paths with black cats for luck. A gruesome pumpkin patch lights your way. Traveling past the old tram pick-up spot, guests get to walk even further along the front lot and actually into the world of Jordan Peele’s NOPE and US.

The Tethered from the movie US crosses the globe and find their way into the aftermath of Jupiter’s Claim from the film NOPE. The screen-used set location of a small business Western theme park is now overrun by survivors and people clad in red broiler suits.

The body movements of the Tethered was choreographed by the same instructor from the movie US. Admirers of Jordon Peele’s movies will certainly be awe-struck with this real-life merging of his cinematic universe. We hope this walk-through of a real movie set receives enough praise to return next year.

Also in 2023 will be the spring opening of TRON/Lightcycle Run in Magic Kingdom, and the live appearance of EPCOT’s mascot Figment for meet and greets.

What If?

For this segment, D’Amaro was joined by Disney Animation Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee and Imagineering Portfolio Creative Executive Chris Beatty to explore some of the “blue sky” possibilities for the parks.  Potential changes included changing out DinoLand USA at Animal Kingdom for an area themed to Zootopia and/or Moana.

D23 Expo

Another expansion teased by the panel was the concept of “Beyond Big Thunder Mountain.”  An area on the other side of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom could potentially be developed into an adventure-themed area with lands incorporating a guided tour of the house in the valley of Encanto or a flight into the Land of the Dead from Coco or the often-rumored Land of Villains.

Disney 100 Years of Wonder

Finally, D’Amaro offered a look at Disney100–the biggest celebration in the company’s history–which will kick off in January.  New nighttime spectaculars are coming to several of the parks:

  • World of Color – One will be a new version of World of Color with a new story celebrating Walt Disney’s storytelling legacy.
  • Wondrous Journeys will be a new fireworks show that will kick off in late January at the  Disneyland Resort.  It will feature nods to all 60 Walt Disney Animation Studios films to date.
  • Magic Happens, the popular parade whose run was terminated early by COVID, will return this spring.
  • The relatively new World Showcase Lagoon show Harmonious, at EPCOT, will be retired and replaced in late 2023.

The panel concluded with a performance of the new song “It’s Wondrous” from the upcoming Wondrous Journeys show.

165186 RH9 3736

All in all, a lot of additions/replacements coming to Disney Parks and Resorts all over the globe.  How many will come to fruition?  Only time, and perhaps another D23 Expo, will tell.

Disney Studios Day 2 at D23 Expo Explodes with Exclusives

disney studios

The Walt Disney Studios continued to fuel the fire ignited at the Saturday Sept 10th showcase with a jam-packed presentation from the teams at Lucasfilm, Marvel Studios and 20th Century Studios at the Anaheim Convention Center as part of D23 Expo 2022.

Thousands of fans were among the first to hear new announcements, see never-before-seen footage and hear from the stars of the industry’s biggest streaming and theatrical titles slated for the coming months and beyond.

studiospanel

Alan Bergman, chairman, The Walt Disney Studios, welcomed a fired-up crowd to Hall D23. Bergman reflected on the 13-year history of D23 Expo and the evolution of the Studios group. “That [first] year, none of the iconic studios you’ll hear from today were part of the company,” he said. “It was just Disney Animation, Disney Live Action and Pixar. We announced the Marvel acquisition just before our first Expo in 2009.

Then three years later, we added Lucasfilm, and in 2019, 20th Century Studios. I’ve been at Disney for 26 years, so it’s been incredibly exciting to welcome each of them to our Studio family. And like Disney and Pixar, each of these studios has a phenomenal legacy of storytelling.”

Joining Bergman to walk fans through the upcoming slate of films were studio executives Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm; Kevin Feige, producer and president of Marvel Studios; and James Cameron, director of 20th Century Studios’ “Avatar: The Way of Water.” The showcase included the following highlights.

LUCASFILM
Bergman introduced Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, who guided the audience through the incredible lineup ahead. “As you can see, there is an immense amount of exciting new Star Wars storytelling to come from Lucasfilm. The quality, creativity, and variety these teams are bringing to Disney+ is absolutely remarkable, and I can’t wait for everyone to experience each of them.”

First up, “ANDOR” a 24-episode spy thriller that features one of the central characters in “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Kennedy welcomed to the stage stars Genevieve O’Reilly, Kyle Soller, Adria Arjona and Cassian Andor himself, Diego Luna, as their character posters were unveiled. A highlight for all was the showing of the final trailer for the spy thriller filmed over two 12-episode seasons.

The era featured in “Andor”—the five years before the events of “Rogue One”—is filled with danger, deception and intrigue where Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a rebel hero. “Andor” presents Star Wars from a different perspective, focusing on everyday people whose lives are affected by the Empire.

The decisions they make have real consequences, and the stakes for them—and the galaxy—couldn’t be higher. The series also stars Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, Denise Gough, Fiona Shaw and Faye Marsay. Toby Haynes, Susanna White and Benjamin Caron direct specific episodes, and Kathleen Kennedy, Tony Gilroy, Sanne Wohlenberg, Diego Luna and Michelle Rejwan executive produce.

Tony Gilroy is also the creator and showrunner. With action, adventure and suspense filmed against a cinematic landscape, the first three episodes of season 1 premiere exclusively on Disney+ on September 21.

Kennedy reflected on the world created in 1988 by George Lucas and Ron Howard that inspired the next step in the magical journey—a new live-action fantasy-adventure series “WILLOW,” from Lucasfilm and Imagine Entertainment. Disney+ has unveiled the key art and trailer for the sophomore season of the Original series, “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” from Disney Branded Television and 20th Television, which will return with a two-episode premiere on Wednesday, October 26 on Disney+.

This season, Reynie, Sticky, Kate and Constance, the four gifted orphans who were recruited by the eccentric Mr. Benedict (Tony Hale), embark on another mission to save the world from the nefarious plans of his twin brother Dr. L.D. Curtain (also Hale). The Original series, based on the New York Times bestselling book series by Trenton Lee Stewart, will debut new episodes weekly on Wednesdays, streaming on Disney+.

When the kids discover that Mr. Benedict and Number Two have been kidnapped, they must piece together the riddles and clues within a perilous scavenger hunt set by Mr. Benedict to foil Curtain’s latest scheme. Relying on only their wits, intellect, and empathy, the charming group of misfits embark on a globe-trotting adventure by air, land, sea and pie truck, calling upon their special skills to solve the mysteries and rescue their lost comrades.

Along the way, the kids experience the growing pains that come along with being part of their new “found family”, while remaining true to their unique selves. In the process, they discover what true happiness really means.

In addition to Hale, “The Mysterious Benedict Society” stars Kristen Schaal as Number Two; MaameYaa Boafo as Rhonda Kazembe; Ryan Hurst as Milligan; Gia Sandhu as Ms. Perumal; Seth B. Carr as George “Sticky” Washington; Emmy DeOliveira as Kate Wetherall; Mystic Inscho as Reynie Muldoon; and Marta Kessler as Constance Contraire.
