A Wrinkle In Time Movie Review

Storm Reid is Meg Murry and Levi Miller is Calvin O'Keefe in Disney's A WRINKLE IN TIME, an epic adventure based on Madeleine L'Engle's timless classic directed by Ava DuVernay.

“Be a Warrior”

Disney’s latest live action film, A Wrinkle in Time, is a non-stop visual spectacle that will challenge your idea of the modern narrative. Adapted from the 1962 novel by Madeleine L’Engle, it follows the story of a young girl’s cross dimensional quest to find her missing father with the help of her brother, friend, and three magical beings known as Mrs. Who, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs. Which. From start to finish, Meg, who is played by actress Storm Reid, is challenged to question her reality and learn to accept who she is to become a warrior that can help defend the world from an ever growing darkness.

In simplistic terms, it sounds just like a hero’s journey narrative, and one we are all too familiar with. Surprisingly, it isn’t that straightforward. A Wrinkle In Time is not a traditional tale, and just like the original story, the film pushes the boundaries on that structure in a way that makes you think beyond standard cinematic convention. Director, Ava DuVernay, deconstructs and stylizes the film in a way that is best described as dreamlike. Each sequence is intense, jaw dropping, and beautifully pleasing. The film’s visuals are vast and really draw you in, keeping you engaged playfully from moment to moment. DuVernay and her entire visual effects team deserve praise for their work, as it will be hard to argue that they are anything but top notch.

Yet, with those visuals, the narrative may not feel as in sync for viewers. This poses real hesitation, as the story is pushed along at a quick pace and the expected backstory and development feels shallow. From the first introduction of the mysterious women, Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey), Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon), and Mrs. Who (Mindy Kaling), the audience is left to wonder what’s going on and may feel a little disoriented.

The first reaction is that the movie is failing to present the narrative clearly. With so many modern films following the same conventions in storytelling, it is easy to judge and make assumptions when a film does not meet that criteria. Yet, the trick for A Wrinkle In Time is to let go of those assumptions. That feeling of confusion and the quick pace are intentional. For those who haven’t read the original novel, this may not make a whole lot of sense. Yet, even if you were to gaze at the summary of the original story, you can see that the idea was not as concrete and tangible as we see in other children’s stories. As previously stated, the idea is to generate a realistic feeling of a dream and is more abstract.

The reason comes down to the central character of the story, Meg. Meg feels at odds with herself at the start of the movie, is struggling with the disappearance of her father, is being bullied by her classmates, and isn’t able to shake the feeling that something isn’t right with the world around her. That uncertainty is being presented to us directly on screen through the plot and presentation of the story.

Because Meg is confused, the depiction on screen presents that confusion to the rest of us visually. The story is splintered when Meg’s confidence is splintered. We are following Meg’s internal struggle, and that’s a huge factor into whether or not the movie will work for audiences. It is not as easy of a story to comprehend, but that hurdle comes directly from the original story and is a daunting challenge for any filmmaker to adapt.

It is safe to say, the style will find resistance with older viewers, who will want a more traditional story. DuVernay has reminded the media that this is a film for children and the young at heart, which she has promoted heavily along with her cast leading up to the film’s release. Kids don’t usually ask for thorough backstories, kids don’t need a fully enveloped story to have fun. Children will take the film at face value and just enjoy the ride.

The film asks you to interpret openly, rather than have it served directly to you. The basic structure is there, with a beginning, middle, and end, but the rest is fluid and very seldom in perfect harmony. Will it make sense for everyone? Not likely.

Thankfully, this film doesn’t need to do that to give you the main themes and goals the film tries to achieve. The fun and heart are definitely felt in this picture, and the divide will most likely be between younger children and adults.

As expected, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy Kaling provide solid performances. There are plenty of laughs, smiles, and inspirational moments between them. The only fallback is that their characters are not the forefront of the story. They appear to be more subtle guides than actual players in the turnout of the narrative. The same can be said with the entire adult ensemble for this picture. With big names like Chris Pine, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, and Zach Galifianakis, you would expect them to stand out prominently. Instead, these big players are there to compliment the performances of their younger counterparts. The focus of the film falls to Storm Reid and the rest of the younger talent.

Reid provides a great complexity that really draws you into Meg’s strength and intelligence. Meg has a very scientific and analytic background, she questions everything and is hesitant. All the while, she has heart and lets that shine brightly. As the story grows, she grows, and it’s a nice balance given Reid’s performance.

That is strongly supported by Deric McCabe’s character, Charles Wallace. As her adopted younger brother, he is both her inspiration and optimism. As McCabe’s first role, he stands out brilliantly, giving a refreshing, warm , and passionate take both parents and children will enjoy.

Other supporting roles come from Girl Meets World alum, Rowan Blanchard, as well as Aussie teen, Levi Miller. Blanchard plays Meg’s Bully, Veronica, who may have something more going on than meets the eye. Miller plays Meg’s new found friend, Calvin, who reverses the gender roles as the supportive counterpart for Reid. He doesn’t overpower her presence, and relies on her to make it through the adventure. It’s a unique element to say the least. Overall, what stands out with this picture is the risk taking Disney has taken with the project. It’s a difficult adaptation that uses a story not everyone is familiar with. Even Oprah had not heard of the story until she was approached to take part in the film.

It’s important that Disney took the chance on DuVernay to make this film a reality. Risks are needed to keep the hope of artistic originality alive. Especially at a time where remakes and reboots are a dime a dozen. It also generates more opportunity for filmmakers to provide a chance for stronger diversity and empowerment to creators. This film features an African American woman as director, an African American lead actress and one of the most diverse casts of any major science fiction release in recent memory. This is a huge step forward in a medium desperate for change and fresh perspective.

Regardless, it’s still a huge gamble. Disney’s previous gambles came from films like Tomorrowland and John Carter. These are stories that were original and different than the standard Disney slate. Yet, both films fell short and failed to bring in interest. Critics weren’t impressed and fans didn’t provide the following needed to keep them alive.

The difference this time around boils down to the push for diversity and representation. Many will go out and see this film for that reason alone.  That will provide a significant boost that may be the greatest hope this film will have at impressing a conventional audience. Whether or not the bet will pay off for A Wrinkle In Time, is yet to be seen. One thing is certain, it’s an artistic and cultural achievement.

Lady and the Tramp Walt Disney Signature Collection: Blu-Ray Review

“In the whole history of the world there is but one thing that money can not buy…to wit-the wag of a dog’s tail”

Lady and the Tramp is the latest addition to the Walt Disney Signature Collection. The follow up to the recent Diamond Edition releases on Blu-Ray, this is Disney’s second release on the Blu-Ray format.

This film has a special place in the collection, as it connects to Walt Disney in a very personal way, which is touched upon in the features list. The set brings Walt front and center, partnering directly with the Walt Disney Family Museum to remind us what it means to be part of the Signature series.

The first feature, “Walt and His Dogs”, highlights the strong connection Walt had with his family and his four legged companions. From his earliest days, to the front lines of WWI, to his final moments, Walt couldn’t imagine a world without a dog by his side. It’s a heartwarming segment that features Walt himself as well as beautiful shots and clips provided by the Walt Disney Family Museum. Lady and the Tramp becomes that much more of a personal story, which many hardcore Disney fans will love and appreciate.

Walt’s presence can also be felt through a special feature that takes you through his famed office at the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank. Recently restored to its former glory, we get to see the delicate and painstaking work at recapturing the creative energy and atmosphere of Walt’s most influential moments. Every item was reviewed and catalogued with the help of the Disney Archives, bringing us all back to the days of Lady and the Tramp, Mary Poppins, and so much more.

In previous releases, the focus has been more on the feature elements and behind the scenes. Thor Ragnarok: Blu-Ray Review

ThorRagnarok58c9d18fef1c7
ThorRagnarok58c9d18fef1c7

“GOD OF THUNDER!!!”

With Black Panther dominating the box office, Marvel is on cloud nine right now, which is only added by the release of Thor Ragnarok on Blu-Ray/DVD. Following the psychedelic third installment into the Thor story, there is plenty of entertainment and laughter to go around. What sets this installment of the franchise apart is the difference in tone, which to compare, more closely matches the humor levels of Guardians of the Galaxy. This set is filled with little amusements that pair well with the main feature, which will be sure to be a quick smile for any hardcore MCU fans.

One of the main featurettes, “Finding Korg”, brings you into the wacky and unique mind of director, Taika Waititi. He guides you on a tour of how the new character was brought to life and how much of an impact he has made on the attitude of the cast. Playing both director and Korg, Waititi has proved to be one of the most interesting things about the process of this film. He’s playful, a bit on the odd side, and open to playing with the team’s imagination to bring forth the full capability of the film. It’s a nice change of pace, and definitely provides some new life into the series.

Team Darryl comes back into the mix, as The Grand Master is featured in his own new storyline with Thor’s former Aussie roommate. It appears that Goldblum’s character has managed to survive, which may lead to other cameos in the future. It would be fantastic to see him up to his foolish schemes with the likes of The Collector.

This set is also unique in the sense that it has a whole feature dedicated to the “unstoppable women” of the film. It’s a great nod to the impact and power of both Valkyrie and Hela on the series and the shift towards empowerment and equality in the MCU. It’s light and to the point, which is a great way to share in with the cast and crew on their thoughts on bringing these characters into the larger scope of the cinematic universe.

Other quick surprises include two special 8 bit scenes from the film. The retro styled moments were created by the crew to help the special effects team plan out some key sequences in the film. Laced with dialogue and arcade references, it’s entertaining and very unorthodox from a production standpoint. It’s a great add on, which is fast and easy to watch.

Here’s a list of full features available on the Blu-Ray set!

  • Director’s Introduction
  • Deleted/Extended Scenes – Deleted Scenes: The Sorcerer Supreme, Skurge Finds Heimdall & Hulk Chases Thor Through Sakaar and Extended Scenes: Thor Meets the Grandmaster, Stupid Avenger vs. Tiny Avenger & Grandmaster and Topaz
  • Gag Reel – Watch a collection of goofs, gaffes and pratfalls starring the cast
  • Exclusive Short/Team Darryl – Fresh off being unseated as the ruler of Sakaar, the Grandmaster makes his way to Earth to start a new life. It’s been over a year since Thor left Australia and Darryl has been struggling to pay his rent. Now Darryl needs a new roommate to help make the monthly payments. Unfortunately for Darryl, the Grandmaster was the only one who answered Darryl’s “Roommate Needed” ad and with no viable options, the Grandmaster moves in.
  • Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years – The Evolution of Heroes – Marvel’s universe is vast and transcends both time and space. We’ll examine the Cinematic Universe as a whole and revisit each of our heroes’ current location and their place in the current MCU timeline, as it all leads up to the one culminating event: “Avengers: Infinity War.”
  • Getting in Touch with Your Inner Thor – “Thor: Ragnarok” director Taika Waititi has brought his unique sensibility and sense of humor to the film in a great many ways but it is the evolution of Thor’s own sense of humor, which stands out the most in the new film. This piece explores the impact Chris Hemsworth has made on the development of his widely-loved character and celebrates the mighty cast and crew who reveal the fun and hard work that went into assembling Thor’s eccentric counterparts.
  • Unstoppable Women: Hela & Valkyrie – This piece explores the strong female characters in “Thor: Ragnarok,” their importance in the MCU, their incredible casting and their epic comic origins.
  • Finding Korg – A tongue-in-cheek interview with Taika on casting Korg. He describes the difficult search for just the right evolution of the character design, and the nuances of this instantly classic character in the MCU. This conversation will also delve into all the extraordinary visual effects that brought Korg, Sakaar and the worlds of “Thor: Ragnarok” to life.

Some of the director’s commentary can be seen below, which includes a look at the incredible strobe effects used for the flashback battle scene between the Valkyrie and Hela.

  • Sakaar: On the Edge of the Known and Unknown – Sakaar is the collection point for all lost and unloved things. This documentary will answer all known and unknown questions while also exploring the hard work and creativity that went into creating the look and feel of Sakaar. From design inspired by Jack Kirby’s classic artwork to the dedication of the visual development team to the awe-inspiring physical and digital production, you will see this distant world come alive.
  • Journey into Mystery – A deep dive story piece with the writers, director and producer Kevin Feige about the inspirations for “Thor: Ragnarok” within the comics. Most notably, the contest of champions limited series where the Grandmaster pitted our favorite heroes against one another as he does in the film. • 8bit Scenes – Final Bridge Battle + Sakaar Spaceship Battle. Dive into these climactic sequences presented in retro video-game format.
  • Directors Commentary

This additional piece of commentary highlights the bright colors and inspirations provided in the ship design for the film. Both Australia and New Zealand were heavy influences on the aesthetics of the picture.

The party kicks off on March 7 with “The Happiest Show on Earth”—a runway fashion event featuring a Mickey-inspired collection designed by couture brand Opening Ceremony founders Carol Lim and Humberto Leon. The show will also serve as Opening Ceremony’s Spring 2018 runway show and close out fashion week celebrations around the world. Select items from the Mickey collaboration will be immediately available for sale following the runway show at shopDisney.com, OpeningCeremony.com and Opening Ceremony stores, while the remaining ready-to-wear looks will hit stores in November. The iconic story of Minnie Mouse, who shares this milestone anniversary with Mickey and recently received her official star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, will also be celebrated at the fashion show.

Disney’s collaboration with Opening Ceremony will serve as the launch of “Mickey the True Original”—a global celebration of Mickey’s heritage, personality and status as a pop-culture icon. The campaign will come to life through fashion collaborations with other true original brands, as well as engaging content and events that embrace Mickey’s impact on the past, present and future.

The celebration continues throughout 2018 and beyond:

·       This fall, ABC will air a star-studded celebration of Mickey in honor of his birthday, with special guests, musical performances and more.

·       Disney Channel will debut season five of the Mickey Mouse animated shorts, taking the series total to more than 90 shorts, including a special seven-minute extended-length birthday episode that will air later this year.

·       Walt Disney Parks and Resorts around the world will celebrate Mickey’s 90th on November 18, marking the day with commemorative merchandise, photo locations and more.

·       Beginning in late 2018 and into 2019 the World’s Biggest Mouse Party, saluting Mickey and Minnie, will take place at Disney Parks worldwide.

Disney On Ice will salute Mickey as the “True Original” host of Disney On Ice since its inception in 1981 by creating Mickey’s 90th pre-shows for productions touring the United States, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Disney On Ice presents Mickey’s Special Celebration, a new production showcasing Mickey Mouse’s memories throughout the years, will launch in Japan in July 2018 and continue touring throughout the Asia-Pacific region until August 2019.

• In France, 38 design and art schools will take part in “Mickey Is Art,” a unique contest in which students will craft works of Mickey, inspired by their favorite artistic movement. The winning designs will be displayed this summer in 12 major train stations in France and for sale this September at Galerie Glénat in Paris.

·       Disney store will continue to celebrate milestone moments for Mickey Mouse with the Mickey Mouse Memories Collection (launched Jan. 2018), a monthly, limited-release series of 12 collectible plush, mugs and cloisonné pins inspired by Mickey’s most memorable movie roles.

·       Disney Publishing Worldwide will introduce more than 30 titles globally as part of Mickey’s 90th, including books, arts & crafts and comics.

In addition, D23: The Official Disney Fan Club will be celebrating Mickey’s 90th throughout 2018:

·       D23 and the Walt Disney Archives, in partnership with Walt Disney Animation Studios, have commissioned legendary Disney animator Mark Henn to paint Mickey’s official 90th birthday portrait. Henn follows in the footsteps of artists such as Disney Legend John Hench, who crafted five of Mickey’s official portraits. Henn animated Mickey for Mickey’s Christmas Carol (1983) and is currently at work on Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It Ralph 2 (2018). The new portrait will debut on the cover of the fall issue of Disney twenty-three, a quarterly publication from D23.

·       This November, D23 will present Destination D: Celebrating Mickey Mouse, a two-day event at Walt Disney World Resort featuring panels, presentations and fun-filled entertainment.

·       This year’s annual D23 Gold Member gift is an exclusive box set of 23 special Mickey Mouse mementos—authentic reproductions of such treasured keepsakes as pages from the script of Steamboat Willie and a miniature animation cel from Parade of the Award Nominees (1932).

To join the conversation on social, fans are encouraged to use the hashtag #Mickey90.

Mickey’s birthday is celebrated in honor of the release of his first theatrical film, Steamboat Willie, on November 18, 1928, at the Colony Theatre in New York City. Since then, he has starred in more than 100 cartoons and can currently be seen on Disney Channel in the Mickey Mouse cartoon series and on Disney Junior in Mickey and the Roadster Racers.

‘The King and I’ Sets Sail for Costa Mesa – Review

The delightfully charming and captivating tale of THE KING AND I has made its way to Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa. The Lincoln Center Theater Production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s THE KING AND I won four 2015 Tony Awards® including Best Revival of a Musical. It’s a musical that has been revived several times and has stood the test of time with such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You”, “Shall We Dance” and “Something Wonderful”. Filled with star-filled talent and beautiful music, THE KING AND I still captures the hearts of several generations with no sign of losing its luster, etc. etc. etc. (I’m not being lazy, it’s a cliche reference).

This national tour stands strong with a cast of extraordinary talents with the likes of Jose Llana returning to his role after two engagements as the King of Siam and THE Laura Michelle Kelly as Anna Leonowens. Best known for her role in FINDING NEVERLAND and the incomparable MARRY POPPINS, Laura Michelle proceeds her work with one of the loveliest voices in musical theater. The role follows her style of show as THE KING AND I remains a very traditional-style musical with warm ballads and timeless conventional melodies. Those that stick to new contemporary theater may want to be aware that THE KING AND I is your more classical approach at theater.

Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam (Thailand) and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher, whom the modernist King is an imperialist world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

It’s easy to see why Anna and the King don’t tend to see eye to eye on most things, but there is one thing they do share… the discernment that knowledge of the world is important. Through much parading and chivalry of the King’s world within his palace walls, Anna fights to bring understanding and westernized morals to the kingdom.

As I imagine many of you are already aware of much of the story, we will end the explanation here. For a person that doesn’t fancy the film of the same name, nor really remember the story going into this show, this production held my interest and immersed me in this fun, yet otherworldly society.

Filling the stage with colorful lighting and exotic routines, to a creative set design that allows for a large cast, Director Barlett Sher has rounded out many stage principles to create one of the finest musical experiences. THE KING AND I holds to high standards with an entire stage production that is worthy of the shows hype and fame.

Given the show not being my typical cup of tea, I cannot say enough good things about every element in the show. The entire ensemble was remarkable, though off-balance at times (literally). Vocal talent is stellar throughout with standout performances from the roles of Lan Tha and Tuptim played by Kavin Panmeechao and Q Lim respectively. A subplot that feels a little lost in the mix, this forbidden love and escape story remains an important element for the story arc, and a welcome mainstay to the show due to their phenomenal duets of “We Kiss in a Shadow” and “I Have Dreamed”.

The shows comedic elements are perhaps overshadowed by the overuse of “etcetera”, but The King of Siam is hilarious and the royal children help with the cuteness comedy. But above all else, I will always fall back to Laura Michelle Kelly’s onstage warmth and demeanor that is practically perfect in every way… shoot, wrong show.

THE KING AND I is a no doubter for fans of classical musical theater and will likely hold up to those already fans of the musical and movie. There’s no glitz or glamour, no show-stopping number that will have you dancing in you seat, but instead a beautiful tale that is more about morals and ones-own character compass than any sort of love story. Set sail for Bangkok before this show departs.

THE KING AND I is now playing at Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa thru March 11th.
