The Palm Springs Aerial Tram is pulled by 12,000 feet of cable up the side of Mt San Jacinto (photo by Greg Aragon)
The Palm Springs Aerial Tram (www.pstramway.com) is often called the 8th “Wonder of the World” because of the groundbreaking engineering behind its construction. This year, the modern marvel is celebrating its 60th anniversary, so I thought it would be a great time to visit, while also spending a couple of days relaxing in the warm paradise of Palm Springs.
My getaway to the area began at the beautiful Renaissance Palm Springs Hotel, where the family and I checked into a luxurious suite for two nights. The spacious room came with two queen beds, a mini-fridge, a coffee maker, an office desk, comfortable chairs, a spacious bathroom with a tub/shower combo, and a balcony overlooking the property’s large, sparkling pool.

Beyond the suite, the Renaissance Hotel also features onsite restaurants and bars, a fitness center, a convenience store, a meeting space, and free Wi-Fi. My favorite spot at the hotel was the giant outdoor pool area, where guests can lounge beneath umbrellas or in private cabanas between dips in the water.

The hotel is located in Downtown Palm Springs and is set against a backdrop of swaying palm trees, giant spinning windmills, and the majestic San Jacinto Mountains. Once acquainted with the hotel, we drove a couple of miles through town to the Aerial Tram for a thrilling ride up the mountain.

Our adventure began at the base of Mt San Jacinto, at Valley Station at an elevation of 2,643 feet. Here we picked up our tickets and boarded a pumpkin-shaped tram car, which can hold up to 80 passengers. Once inside, the conductor closed the doors and the tram began climbing straight up a mile of rocky cliffs.
The tram is pulled by 12,000 ft of cable and passes through five huge support towers along the way. At each tower, the car shimmies and shakes, giving riders a roller coaster thrill. Inside the tram, all passengers get great views of Coachella Valley because the car rotates 360 degrees. According to officials, these are the world’s largest rotating tram cars!
The tram ride begins at Valley Station at an elevation of 2,643 feet (photo by Greg Aragon)
During the ascent, visitors are transported through five unique ecosystems – a change in landscape and life, equivalent to a drive from Sonora, Mexico to the Arctic Circle in Alaska. It makes this trip in about 11 minutes!
While enjoying the ride, I marveled at the views and thought of the immense challenge it was to build this project. It all began in 1935 when a young engineer named Francis Crocker was sweating in the Palm Springs desert heat when he looked up and noticed that there was snow atop Mount San Jacinto. There must be an easy way up to that snow, he thought. And with that, the dream of a mountain tram was born.
Each tram car can hold up to 80 people and rotates 360 degrees, so everybody gets a great view (photo by Greg Aragon)
After years of planning and political hurdles, a bill was signed in 1945 to build a tram up the mountain. By 1950, engineers were hammering out designs and preparing construction until the Korean War caused a 10-year delay.
To overcome the challenges of building up the side of a rock mountain, engineers ingeniously employed helicopters to help erect four of the five supporting towers. Because of this, the tram was labeled the “Eighth Wonder of the World” and was designated a historical civil engineering landmark. The tram was officially completed in 1963.
The tram ride up the cliffs ends at Mountain Station at 8,516 ft above sea level. Here there is a lodge-like visitor’s center with two restaurants, a gift shop, a small museum, and lots of spots to look out over the valley below.
At the top of the mountain, there is another visitor’s center, with a restaurant and cafe, and more than 50 miles of hiking and trails (photos by Greg Aragon)
Outside the visitor center is Mt. San Jacinto State Park, which offers 54 miles of hiking trails and a few primitive campsites within a 13,000-acre pristine wilderness. The weather is usually about 30 to 40 degrees cooler up here, so riders should bring a coat. When we got outside, we hiked Long Valley, following a three-quarter-mile-long loop trail through a large meadow.
The temperature was about 55 degrees and the meadow was lined with tall pine trees and native plants and grasses. Along the trail, we scratched the dark brown bark of a Jeffrey pine tree (the most common tree in the valley) and breathed its natural vanilla and butterscotch scent. There was also a small, raging stream flowing through the valley.
After hiking we returned to the visitor’s center and had lunch at Pine’s Cafe, where we enjoyed chicken tenders, a deli sandwich, and some of the best pizza I’ve had in a long time. The Aerial Tram also offers a special ride and dinner combination ticket from 4:00 p.m. daily with meal service from 4:30 p.m. Prices for the combination ticket are $38.00 for adults and seniors and $24.50 for children ages 3-10.
Cabanas are a great way to escape the sun and relax poolside (photo by Greg Aragon)
After lunch, we bought a t-shirt at the gift shop, and a commemorative gold coin for $5, and then relaxed on the Mountain Station terrace, looking down over the entire Palm Springs desert valley, with views from the Salton Sea to the San Gorgonio Pass.
Back at the Renaissance Hotel, we lounged by the pool in our own private cabana, which comes with a small fridge, comfortable sofas, deck chairs, and plenty of shade and privacy. The cabanas are available for rent from the front desk. For more info on the hotel, visit: https://www.marriott.com/en-us/hotels/pspbr-renaissance-palm-springs-hotel/overview/
The Palm Springs Aerial Tram is located at One Tram Way, Palm Springs, CA 92262. Tickets are $29.95 for adults, $17.95 for kids 3 – 10, and $27.95 for seniors. For more information call 888.515.TRAM or visit: www.pstramway.com
What an evening. I try my hardest to go into every musical blind, having not heard music or storylines ahead of time, but this phenomenal story of Tina Turner’s life challenged that. Still, I was not completely sure what to expect from this show, aside from the fact that it tells Tina Turner’s story, and continues to sell out in London. Tina Turner to this day has a fervent fan base, many of which were elated to also be in the audience tonight, wearing costumes and/or wigs to look like the singer at various performances over her illustrious career.
Tina – The Tina Turner Musical begins with her in adulthood, and seemingly takes you into her memories going back to her childhood, where you quickly learn that the tragedies of her life began very early on. Born Anna-Mae Bullock, Tina had parental struggles that preceded her well-known tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner. Her life in Tennessee was complicated, and her fateful move to St. Louis allowed her to follow her dreams, though at the expense of much of her joy. Ike’s abuse toward her continues and intensifies, until she reaches deep inside herself, and allows herself to fight back.
Assisted by her more recent Buddhist faith, her “Nam-myoho-renge-kyo” chants bring her courage and strength to endure and eventually escape Ike’s grasp. With a Las Vegas show and very little income, Tina felt lost, as she continued to work for almost no income trying to support her sons. Her luck turned when her longtime tour manager and assistant Rhonda Graam got in touch with songwriter Terry Britten and artist manager and music producer Roger Davies who saw her promise and chose to manage her despite ongoing challenges with Capitol Records executives at the time.
The hit song “What’s Love Got to With It” was Tina Turner’s first #1 hit, topping the charts, with the album being nominated for a Grammy. In this process, she met the true love of her life, her second husband Erwin Bach. It took a long time, but the story ends happily, as Tina Turner realizes her dreams and finds the love she deserved.
Her story was too long to be limited to such a short time (about 2 hours and 45 minutes with a 15-minute intermission), but nonetheless, I understood the premise. In a sense, the quick whirlwind storytelling really demonstrated Naomi Rodgers’ acting and vocal prowess, as she was able to effortlessly portray many emotions, and age her voice with the character.
First off, Ayvah Johnson, as young Anna-Mae, is such a powerhouse, owning the stage for multiple solos in an arrangement of “Nutbush City Limits” reminiscent of a vibrant church choir. Anna-Mae’s (Naomi Rodgers) duet with her grandmother (Carla R. Stewart) of “Don’t Turn Around” was heartfelt, really serving as a turning point for the trajectory of Anna-Mae’s life. “Shake a Tailfeather” was such a fun number, well danced and visually appealing. Rodgers’ vocal abilities quickly apparent in “She Made My Blood Run Cold” and the audience was really feeling the excitement and power of the vocals. “Let’s Stay Together”, between Tina and Raymond (Gerard M. Williams) was a huge hit with the audience; the chemistry between Rodgers and Williams was palpable. “I Want to Take You Higher” was visually fascinating, using the song to illustrate the tragic timeline of Tina and Ike’s (Roderick Lawrence) relationship over the first 10 years, with Ike habitually cheating on her and getting into some dangerous habits, it is at this point that she is shown Buddhism.
The recording process for “River Deep – Mountain High” with Phil Spector was interesting to watch, knowing that Spector, however eccentric, was a pioneer in music history. As Ike grows more and more unhinged, you feel deeply for Tina’s struggles, as he continues the circle of abuse singing “Be Tender With Me Baby” hoping to keep her from standing up for herself and staying with him. “Proud Mary” (another huge audience hit), transitions us into the 1970s with a high energy number, followed by “I Don’t Really Wanna Fight No More” which was a purposefully jarring juxtaposition to “Proud Mary”, demonstrating the difference between her private life and her public persona.
The entire performance of “I Don’t Really Wanna Fight No More” and the storytelling around it brought me, and most of the audience, to tears. I overheard someone sitting near me tell his seatmate that he held it together well until that song.
Act II moves us into the late 1970s, as Tina was working as a house cleaner and playing shows in Las Vegas to make enough money to support her sons alone. “Private Dancer” was used to illustrating this period of her life, but the lyrics and theme of the song I felt did not make sense, making her house cleaning work seem more sexual than it likely was. “Disco Inferno” was a complete delight, with plenty of sequins, disco balls, and fun choreography. The Abbey Road studio sessions to record her new album is so funny and cringey in the best way.
The blocking and use of past characters on stage, but barely illuminated, portrays her returning to her memories and using her past experiences to push her forward. This was used heavily in “I Can’t Stand the Rain” and “Tonight”. “Tonight” is especially poignant, with Turner reaching to her inner child and past self, as well as her grandmother who, at that point, was one of the only people in her life who truly loved her.
Naomi Rodgers is, of course, the standout as Tina Turner. Her abilities are insane, as I mentioned before, where a simple wig and outfit change was enough for you to believe Tina was older, based on Rodgers’ performance. Her singing abilities are unmatched, with phenomenal control and emotion. Roderick Lawrence was fantastic; in that, it only takes a few minutes for you to absolutely despise Ike Turner.
His range of being suave, manipulative, and completely enraged and unhinged is impressive, and truly created Ike on stage. Roz White, playing Tina’s mother Zelma, was great at embodying the complexity of her character, struggling with her own parenting, and still managing to be funny throughout. Zachary Freier-Harrison was as endearing as Roger Davies. His performance made the character especially endearing and his great relationship with Tina believable.
I would also be remiss to not talk about Aynah Johnson again, who clearly held her own on this stage, and will certainly continue to do so for years to come, should she choose to do so—What a talent.
The set design was multi-layered, yet fairly simple. Backgrounds were done with projections but were different in that they often presented somewhat blurred, distant-looking landscapes, which was a visually appealing choice to keep the sharp details on the characters and physical sets and not overwhelm the eye. Physical sets were moved on and off stage by actors in seamless scene transitions and mostly consisted of doors and furniture.
Despite the simplicity, the choices allowed my imagination to take me to their settings, and it sometimes still felt cinematic. The band plays on the stage behind the projection screen and sometimes plays on stage with the actors as stage musicians if the scene calls for it. Their actual setup is not revealed until the final number when you see their formal setup as Tina’s New York concert musicians.
I have to say that the finale number made me feel a lot, especially still in the very recent wake of Tina Turner’s passing. The set, song choice and Rodgers’ performance made me feel as though the audience got to go back in time and steal one last moment with Tina Turner giving the performance of a lifetime.
When you go see the show, you should ensure you plan to stay past the finale for the most exciting mini-concert. Audience participation is strongly encouraged, and you find yourself dancing and singing along with Tina for two more songs before the curtain finally falls on what will be an unforgettable night of music, heart, and soul, telling the complex and beautiful life story of musical legend Tina Turner.

Bhutan: Land of Mysticism and Mythology
The first day in Bhutan includes a visit to a monastery where a monk will offer a blessing for safe travels. This blessing is a common Bhutanese practice and is your introduction to the local culture.
The journey on this 11-day excursion continues to Thimphu, the Phobjika Valley, Punakha, and Paro.
In Thimphu, guests will stop at the Zangdok Pelri Temple, see the 169-foot Buddha Dordenma statue, hear from Buddhist practitioners, and even participate in a butter lamp lighting ceremony. Following lunch, at the Institute of Thirteen Arts and Crafts, guests will see amazing artwork and a traditional painting demonstration. One of the most significant elements of this trip happens at the Folk Heritage Museum. Here guests will meet with a member of the King’s Court for a question-and-answer session followed by dinner at the museum.
Next, the beautiful Dochula Pass and its spectacular views will greet you as you stand in awe of the Himalayan mountains. In the Phobjikha Valley, touring a 450-year-old monastery, hiking in the forested areas to spot birds and wildlife, plus visiting a local farming community, and having butter tea and lunch with a local farmer are just a few of the special moments in this region. Guests will also learn about the Black-Necked Crane and the local efforts to preserve and protect their roosting areas.
In Punakha, guests will engage with local villagers as they explore the countryside, Buddhist monasteries, the 520-foot suspension bridge, and the Punakha Dzong, an architectural wonder and the most important fortress in Bhutan.
Through hands-on experiences and interactions with local people, travelers on the National Geographic Expeditions Signature Land trip in Bhutan will gain exclusive access and understanding of the country’s culture and natural wonders. (Credit: National Geographic Expeditions)
Paro is also a delight. Here, guests will tour the National Museum to view the finest Bhutanese art collection of more than 3,000 pieces spanning 1,500 years of the country’s history and visit the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery.
This is a dream trip for many reasons — the country has long protected its culture and has limited tourism. Known for its Gross National Happiness (GNH) Index, tourism and overall lifestyle are closely monitored by the government to contribute to the collective happiness of its people. For example, there are nine key markers that are measured, including culture, community, and the environment.

“Six: The Musical” turns the pages of history and flips a golden crown into an electrifying musical concert for the ages. The interweaving contemporary culture of fashion, dating, song, and dance is forever entangled with tales of toxic relationships and abusive power as told by sultry muses tied with a common link. That link happens to be King Henry VIII – husband of the six ex-wives each spinning their “her-story” ballad of their outlandish marriage to the prominent royal.
Their fate is forever remembered in divorce, beheading, death, and one survival. Tune in LIVE on stage at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts to hear their powerful voices above the rowdy audience. Dazzle in the sparkle of the glimmering rhinestone-covered handheld microphones, stomping footwear, and colorful costumes.
2022 Aragon Tour Production Photos
The live performance is graced by the presence of an all-female and non-binary cast and musicians. Khaila Wilcoxon as Catherine of Aragon. Storm Lever as Anne Boleyn. Natalie Paris as Jane Seymour. Olivia Donalson as Anna of Cleves. Courtney Mack as Katherine Howard. Gabriela Carrillo as Catherine Parr. The Ladies in Waiting is composed of a four-piece band. Conductor Valerie Maze on keyboard. Janetta Goines is on bass. Rose Laguana on guitars. Paige Durr is on drums.
The rock concert approach with minimal scene changes permits the queens to address and interact with the audience directly. The dance numbers are solid with the queens rotating as each other’s backup dancers and singers. There is no show without the whole cast and crew pouring talent visibly onstage for the majority of the show’s running time.
The lovely sirens shower the stage with 80 minutes of banging instruments and inspiring vocals, remixes, and hybrids. Influences of many popular female artists can be picked apart and sewn together. Beyoncé and Shakira. Lily Allen and Avril Lavigne. Adele and Sia. Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. Ariana Grande and Britney Spears. Alicia Keys and Emeli Sandé. Music fans will rejoice at the inventive homages.

The lack of an intermission leaves ample time between music numbers for sassy mean-girl jabs in light of spiritual fun amongst the ex-wives duking it out to be crowned who had it worst. Their unwavering and unconventional sisterhood type relationship can be related somehow in some way to someone listening in the audience. The harmonious perfect pitches and emotional tones bring the house together.
The expansion pack of Cell Block Tango from “Chicago”. Less political than “Hamilton”; less romantic than “Hadestown”. “Six: The Musical” raises the voice of the voiceless. An astonishing musical tribute to women linking relatable struggling relationships past and present. This Tony Award winner for Best Costume Design and Best Original Score was written by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss. “Six: The Musical” is now playing until June 25, 2023, at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Are you looking to trade in white snow for white sand beaches? If so, Disney Cruise Line provides the perfect tropical setting for a family holiday getaway. With two brand-new entertainment experiences, Disney characters dressed in jolly new looks, and fun-filled activities for the whole family, the high seas will be brimming with the spirit of the holidays later this year.
New Tree Lighting Ceremony
On the first night of all Very Merrytime sailings, guests will gather around the three-deck-tall tree in the ship’s atrium for a brand-new tree lighting ceremony. Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, and Goofy will invite families to sing along to classic holiday tunes, followed by a countdown that will not only make the tree merry and bright but also introduce the guests of honor for the cruise.
“Deck” the Halls at Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party
Mickey and Minnie’s Holiday Party, another brand-new experience on these specialty sailings, will invite families to the upper decks for a one-of-a-kind celebration at sea filled with tidings of good cheer. This high-energy deck party – thrown by Mickey and Minnie – will feature favorite Disney friends as they celebrate friendship, love, and family with a fresh mix of classic and original holiday songs.
Can’t get enough holiday décor? In addition to these new entertainment offerings, the Disney Cruise Line decks and halls will be filled with boughs of holly from bow-to-stern during Very Merrytime cruises. Aboard these seasonal sailings, guests will also find beloved Disney characters debuting new holiday attire, themed Very Merrytime activities for the entire family, carolers singing contemporary versions of songs that celebrate a myriad of holidays, commemorative merchandise, and festive food and beverage items.
With cruises from Florida and California, adults and children alike will discover the wonder of the holidays at sea in 2023.
Disney Cruise Line will set sail from a new South Florida home in Fort Lauderdale, offering four- and five-night Very Merrytime cruises aboard the Disney Dream to tropical locales in the western Caribbean and Bahamas. Also from Florida, the Disney Wish, and Disney Fantasy will continue sailing from Port Canaveral to The Bahamas and Caribbean. The Disney Magic will set sail to Baja and the Mexican Riviera from San Diego for holiday sailings before wrapping up the season in Galveston, Texas with Very Merrytime cruises to the western Caribbean.
The Flash has returned and through the power of the speed force is bringing together a new band of super friends on what is sure to be a wild ride for DC fans. Ezra Miller is back and this time, making us all take a double take as Barry Allen and as you guessed it, Barry Allen.
The duality of Miller is the focus of the new film, weaving a story that becomes more compelling as the film sprints to the epic finish. Portraying Allen in two universal variants, we are once again brought into the multiverse, but before you think this is like what we’ve seen before, you may want to think again. For comic book and super hero movie fans alike, this movie really makes it work, bringing the pivotal elements of the iconic storyline, Flashpoint, to life. This makes The Flash the best multiverse movie of the year.
The Academy Award-winning formula for movies as portrayed in last year’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once” has set a new standard for what makes for a compelling multiverse film, personal stakes, and a story with heart. This superhero movie has both while also containing some of the most exciting sequences ever brought to a superhero movie.
All this is done so wonderfully by a fantastic cast. There are two portrayals of the fastest man alive, while also getting two of the best portrayals of Batman back to the big screen, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck.
The driving force of the Flash in this film is his personal tragedy, the murder of his mother when he was a child. For fans familiar with Flashpoint, this film drives the themes into overdrive, bringing Allen face to face with his tragic past, pushing him down a path that puts the very fabric of the multiverse in the balance.
Unlike Bruce who has become Batman to spare others of the tragedy he faced, Barry has come to his motivation to become a hero in a very different way. He adopted his alter ego, while Bruce created his to help others. It is this difference that gives the story personal stakes as our main character ends up committing an act based on this which sets the story into motion.
The opening sequence aside from being large as well as one of the most exciting comic book sequences in recent memory is one of the only sequences that portray the DECU as we know it. Superhero action and drama are masterfully directed by Andy Muschietti in the world where we know Bruce Wayne’s Batman being portrayed by Ben Affleck as well as other familiar DECU regulars. It is not only in the main DECU timeline that he directs his cast but especially in the alternate past which our main character creates.
It’s only after Barry tries to change his tragic past that we meet some scene-stealing versions of our favorite characters. Keaton’s return as Batman is what gives the film some of that extra movie magic while also helping ground the personal stakes in this film. It really is exciting to see Keaton’s Batman suit up again and even if mostly assisted with CGI rendering, it is awesome to see him kick butt. Ultimately Barry Allen’s character development and motivations here are most influenced by the wisdom of the first and the most iconic Batman on the big screen.
The introduction of Sasha Calle as Supergirl is less exciting in thisfilm, but her inclusion in the story can be recognized as valiant as the character’s action sequences are also what adds to this being one of the best superhero movies of all time. In the film her power level and strength are great and the action sequences that move forward are awesome to watch, but her character does not convincingly reach the heights and the humanity the rest of the cast takes us.
Calle plays well against this great cast and even goes toe to toe with the first villain of the DECU, General Zod. Michael Shannon makes a return as an alternate version of his character, however, this Supergirl’s stakes aren’t enough to leave the same impact when faced with Keaton’s Batman. Ultimately both characters are along for the ride and you are left wanting more, even if one is a newcomer and one is now a film icon.
The CGI makes Miller’s performance convincing and is done well, after a few minutes, you’ll find yourself more engaged with their story than the movie magic involved in getting them there. It is the dynamic that these two characters that Miller plays develop that make for a great movie, that presents what it is to struggle to move beyond personal tragedy. The heart and soul that many superhero films lately have been lacking are found here and work almost flawlessly.
Beyond that, it is these performances from Miller that make this film one of the best superhero stories told. The Flash is back and the fans are going to love him. What Andy Muschietti has been able to do here is nothing short of fantastic. So Run don’t walk to watch The Flash Only in Theaters on June 16.
