Ralph Breaks the Internet Movie Review

BUSTED – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” Ralph and Vanellope find themselves in need of making some serious cash in order to purchase a replacement part for her game, Sugar Rush. Following a tip from a local Netizen, the two venture into the gritty online racing game Slaughter Race to swipe the prized car of Shank, the game’s tough-as-nails boss – but she’s not about to let them get away that easily. Featuring John C. Reilly as the voice of Ralph, Sarah Silverman as the voice of Vanellope, and Gal Gadot as the voice of Shank, “Ralph Breaks the Internet” opens in U.S. theaters on Nov. 21, 2018. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

When Wreck It Ralph burst into the scene in 2012, it was a game changer, pun very much intended, because it was a perfect mix of family fun, clever nostalgia, and cutting edge animation. The story pushed beyond the basics of video game references, building a world all its own and 6 years later, the impact and connection the film has made still remains strong and true. Now we have finally arrived at the expected sequel, and in short, it does not disappoint.

The times are changing for Ralph and his video game companions. We are no longer in the golden era of arcade games, past the time of after school high score bragging rights, and are now thrust into the nonstop evolution of the digital age. Ralph Breaks the Internet brings that front and center, being the pendulum of old school and new age, finding new barriers to break along the way. That Wreck It Ralph charm from the first film is definitely there, but in a lot of ways, we get a richer and stronger focus in the writing that really drives this one home. Yes, we get the fun and humor filled moments you’d expect, flashy new Easter Eggs and the glitz and glam of the Internet, but take all that away and you still get so much out of Ralph Breaks the Internet. The beating heart of this movie comes from Ralph and Vanellope alone, no matter how cool everything else still is.

Friendship and the foundations of what it means to be a friend are what really make this film soar beyond expectations, giving us all a little more than we could have hoped for. It all starts with a need for balance and compromise. Ralph, who loves his life in the arcade, just wants things to remain the same. All the while, Vanellope struggles with her own desires to find something more than she has, something challenging and exciting. Yet, those differences are not the end game, at least, not right away.

Right off the bat, Ralph steps in and tries to help Vanellope by creating a new course path for Sugar Rush. Despite those efforts blowing up in Ralph’s face, as we can guess from his previous schemes, the intentions are golden in virtue, showing us how important Vanellope’s happiness is to Ralph. Their partnership is put through the ultimate test, and through the help of Disney magic throughout the film, Ralph and Vanellope come out stronger and more interesting than ever before.

Both endure bumps and bruises along the way, fighting self doubt, selfish temptations, and more personal obstacles. There’s a lot more at stake than before, and viewers are taken on a much more emotional journey. Pay close attention to these two throughout the film, as once again John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman strike gold with their performances, finding new ways to make us laugh, cry, and beg for more.

PAYING THEIR DUES – In “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” video game bad guy Ralph and fellow misfit Vanellope von Schweetz venture into the expansive and thrilling world of the internet. In an effort to find a replacement part for Vanellope’s arcade game, Sugar Rush, Ralph and Vanellope successfully bid at eBay, only to learn they’ll actually have to pay for their purchase. Featuring the voices of John C. Reilly as Ralph, Sarah Silverman as Vanellope, and Rebecca Wisocky as eBay Elayne, the cashier, the follow-up to 2012’s “Wreck It Ralph” opens in theaters nationwide Nov. 21, 2018. ©2018 Disney. All Rights Reserved.

Though we do get some well deserved cameos from a few of our old favorites, like Felix and Calhoun, it’s all about Ralph and Vanellope this time around which shifts the formula slightly but doesn’t stray too far off the race track. There are still plenty of new faces to keep you occupied, like Gal Gadot’s fierce street racing queen, Shank. She’s powerful, witty, and basically a video game version of Gadot’s Diana from Wonder Woman. Still, Shank, like many of the new faces and supporting characters we run into, each serve a clear goal to help our heroes find their way.

This includes, of course, our pack of Disney Princesses. The trailer does showcase them quite prominently, but the film hones in and gives us just enough to tease without dominating the film. What we get instead is a chance for Vanellope to discover her own path, and with the advice of the princesses, she finds that moment in the spotlight and makes it her own. Though, without giving away any spoilers, it definitely breaks convention, leaving you with a wacky and quite interesting satire on what it means to be a princess. Just like Mister Toad’s Wild Ride, we get thrown and tossed in every direction, break every wall, and knock down anyone in the way, making a beautiful and very memorable mess.

We don’t get a villain, a evil force that threatens to take over the world and destroy everything in its path, or even an over the top plot twist. Ralph Breaks the Internet doesn’t need them and instead allows both Ralph and Vanellope to fight their own battles and have some real time to discover what matters most to them. There is a balance between self and others, between your own needs and those of your friends. This movie plays into that idea, and crafts it all together beautifully.

We all need something to relate to, something more than a simple animated feature. Ralph Breaks the Internet has that depth, but doesn’t forget the fun that got us all in the theater in the first place. If any lesson is to be taken from this film, it’s that sometimes we need to take a step back and look into the mirror. We all have our struggles, our faults, and trials, but in the end, we can work towards a better version of ourselves by finding our flaws, listening to others, and putting someone else first once and a while. Though, let’s not forget to take a few seconds every now and then to look up funny memes and viral videos, because trust me, there’s always time for that.

It’s a sugar rush of excitement, and a story that will stay close to your heart right up until a surprise sneak peak comes your way at the end. Make sure to stay behind when the credits begin to role, you won’t be disappointed.

In this version of the classic tale, circus owner, Max Medici (Danny DeVito), enlist the help of former star, Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell) and his children Milly (Nico Parker) and Joe (Finley Hobbins) to care for a very familiar newborn elephant with ears that are larger than life. Just like the original story, the poor elephant is a laughingstock and it isn’t until the family discover Dumbo’s special ability of flight that the circus finds a glimmer of hope in its survival.

However, Dumbo’s high flying antics attract the attention of cunning and persuasive entrepreneur V.A Vandevere. Played by Michael Keaton, the businessman recruits Dumbo to be part of his latest scheme, an over the top entertainment venture named Dreamland. THAT’S SHOW BUSINESS – In Disney’s all-new, live-action feature film “Dumbo,” persuasive entrepreneur V.A. Vandevere (Michael Keaton) recruits a flying elephant named Dumbo for his newest, larger-than-life entertainment venture, Dreamland. Dumbo soars to new heights alongside a stunning aerial artist, Colette Marchant (Eva Green). But Holt Farrier (Colin Farrell), who was originally enlisted to care for Dumbo with his kids (Nico Parker and Finley Hobbins), soon discovers that beneath its shiny veneer, Dreamland is full of dark secrets. Directed by Tim Burton, “Dumbo” flies into theaters on March 29, 2019. ©2018 Disney Enterprises, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The trailer gives us a good glimpse at our new family, fresh off the pages of the new adaptation, moving beyond the original tale of Timothy Mouse. However, we do get a mouse sized cameo, which may indicate the iconic friend and mentor isn’t gone for good. We also get an opportunity to see more of Dumbo’s relationship with his mother and what could be a larger story revolving around their separation. Just make sure to prepare for tears and tissues, as the infamous lullaby scene is shown, bringing back a wave of longing and sad parting that we are all too familiar with.

The new film is directed by Tim Burton and comes from a screenplay by Ehren Kruger. Justin Springer from Tron Legacy is the producer and has the help of an all star team to bring the animated classic to new heights. Dumbo soars into theaters on March 29th, 2019.

Remembering Stan Lee

There was never going to be a time where saying goodbye to the legendary comic book creator Stan Lee was going to be easy. It was a day that many fans, myself included, didn’t want to believe would come. The day that the man of unbridled passion and energy for comics, entertainment, and honestly, the betterment of humanity that we’d come to love over our lives was lost to the great beyond. Within life, sadly, comes the inevitably of death, and today we say our goodbyes to Stan Lee, who passed away at the age of 95.

Few people can span generations as a powerhouse in entertainment, but Stan Lee managed to be do just that. As a pioneer of the comic book industry, Lee created Marvel Comics, and with it, many of the most famous comic book characters of all time. But more importantly than creating characters like Spider-Man and Captain America, he used his characters to be a mirror of our world, and to use them to reflect on ourselves. Much like Rod Serling with The Twilight Zone, Lee used his power in comics to reflect on the important issues at play in an ever changing world. From Spider-Man and DareDevil, to the X-Men and Fantastic Four, Lee’s characters were often damaged individuals who were looking for acceptance in a world that wasn’t ready for them. The X-Men in particular became a catalyst to explore racism and prejudice in the height of the Civil Rights movement.

As a kid, Stan Lee’s writing had a profound impact on me at an early age. Growing up in the 1990s, the comic industry was in a state of flux, so I found myself unsure of how to jump on. While my gateway comic was Star Wars: Han Solo at Stars End, it would be earliest issues of DareDevil that would push me fully into the world of comics, creating my obsession and passion for the medium. The story of Matt Murdock, a kid who is blinded by radioactive substance, but learns to overcome his disability to become a hero bent on justice, I was enthralled with the story. He was a tragic hero, and the more I read those stories, the deeper I fell into Lee’s world. DareDevil would wind up pushing me to read Spider-Man, Uncanny X-Men, and Fantastic Four, as I devoured whatever I could by Stan Lee and the Marvel brand. His words, and many times the art of Jack Kirby, would spark my imagination to great heights, and they’d take me on incredible journeys to far off lands, with characters I could relate to as I grew older.

For many, myself included, Stan Lee was the modern day Joseph Campbell, and his mythology and world building played a huge part in what we learned we wanted in entertainment. The Marvel Universe became an expansive and ever growing, but always interconnected world that all our heroes resided in. This ended up being the launching pad of the current day Marvel Cinematic Universe, a world of interconnected adventures that could see heroes teaming with other heroes, but still having the more personal stories that a single issue could take you on. Kevin Feige was clearly a student of Lee’s storytelling and world building in the same way, but decided to tackle it in the scope of a film series. Every Marvel film feels like a new issue of an ongoing series, taking me back to my earliest days of reading comics, and feels like it’s fulfilling the promise of what Stan Lee’s creations could be not just on the comic book page, but the silver screen as well.

While Lee’s final years were plagued with many tabloid rumors and drama, that could never change how important Lee’s impact was on me from an early age. While his life was truly complicated, he still had an impact on me that completely changed me to my core. He wasn’t just a Stan Lee, the creator of many of my favorite Marvel characters. To me, he was Stan Lee, a man who unlocked the potential of the universe with wonder that you was unrivaled by anyone else. With the help of guys like Jack Kirby, Stan Lee absolutely shaped my life in ways I could never understand until I got older. Without Stan, comics and entertainment would be a much sadder place. But more importantly, the world would be as well. Stan Lee used comics to shape the world, trying hard to make it a better place as best he could.

Stan, you were a king among geeks, a true visionary. But more than that, you were a trailblazer, and you used your power for good to try and shape the world. As was written in Amazing Fantasy #15, “…with great power there must also come — great responsibility!” You lived by those words, and changed many generations with your incredible work. This legacy will live on for many more generations to come as your characters continue to traverse many different mediums of entertainment, inspiring kids at every turn. Thank you, Stan Lee, for everything you’ve done for us. You were one of a kind. Excelsior!

Toy Story 4 Teaser Trailer Surprises Fans

Giddy Up Partner, Pixar has just released a new teaser trailer for Toy Story 4, set to debut next summer. The new trailer can be seen below, which may come as a bit of a surprise for even the most hardcore Toy Story fans.

The new film takes us back to Bonnie’s with Woody, Buzz, and the rest of the beloved gang after the emotionally overwhelming ending events of Toy Story 3. “Like most people, I assumed that ‘Toy Story 3’ was the end of the story,” said director Josh Cooley. “And it was the end of Woody’s story with Andy. But just like in life, every ending is a new beginning. Woody now being in a new room, with new toys, and a new kid, was something we have never seen before. The questions of what that would be like became the beginning of an entertaining story worth exploring.”

Yet, things will be a little different this time around, as Woody and the gang encounter a new toy, Forky, who is of Bonnie’s own design. He persists, pulling away from the other toys, wanting to go back to the simple life of being a spork. Unfortunately for Forky, every time he tries to escape the world of toys, he gets thrown back into the mix for a new adventure.

“The world of Toy Story is built upon the idea that everything in the world has a purpose,” said Cooley. “A toy’s purpose is to be there for its child. But what about toys that are made out of other objects? Forky is a toy that Bonnie made out of a disposable spork, so he’s facing a crisis. He wants to fulfill his purpose as a spork, but now has a new toy purpose thrust upon him.”

Comedian Tony Hale will voice Forky, who can’t wait to jump in and join the Toy Story legacy. “It’s a huge thrill to be part of the Toy Story family,” he said. “But it’s going to take a while for it to really sink in.”

The new trailer will debut with Ralph Breaks the Internet, which comes out on November 21st. The toys are back in town next June. Stay tuned for more!
