The Beach, a Lake and a Pool at The Leta Hotel in Goleta

Goleta
The Leta Hotel is a beach-inspired hideaway in Goleta, CA

For those who love the beaches and beauty of Santa Barbara, but want a slower paced, less touristy atmosphere, the small town of Goleta is only a couple miles up Highway 1, on the same stretch of coast known as the American Riviera.

The family and I recently snuck away to Goleta and discovered a charming, boutique hotel and a compact and walkable beach community with everything we needed for a three day, two-night stay.

Our getaway began at The Leta Hotel, where I enjoyed a free local beer upon check-in and then stepped into room 154, a light and airy California beach-inspired unit. Covered in earthy, eccentric textures and fabrics that give a nod to surf-culture nostalgia, the room was welcoming and efficient. It came with a comfy king bed, mini-fridge, large TV, table and chairs, and huge windows overlooking the property’s pool and winding paths lined with tall palm trees and rich vegetation.

After unpacking, we hit the pool area where we swam and lounged against a beautiful backdrop of swaying palms and the majestic Santa Ynez Mountains. It was a gorgeous Goleta day and we could feel the cool sea breeze coming from the ocean about a mile away as the crow flies.

Goleta
The Leta offers laid back comfort with great views and a sea breeze

From the pool we explored the hotel. Formerly known as the Kimpton Goodland, The Leta is an easygoing, California-cool hideaway tucked between the Pacific Ocean and rolling mountains.

“If your idea of the ultimate Southern California retreat is longboards, poolside cocktails and coastal cuisine, you’ve found your place in the sun at one of the best Santa Barbara hotels around,” reads the hotel website. “Here at The Leta, we have a Golden State of Mind attitude, surf-inspired décor, and eclectic accommodations, plus a passion for music shared through our vinyl record shop and live music scene. All of our eccentric, laid back touches will no doubt have you enjoying the good life, one day at a time.”

Goleta
Room 154, like all rooms, offer a cool, tropical feel with easy pool access

Besides the pool, the 158-room hotel features a small fitness center, a restaurant / bar, 6,000 sq-ft of meeting space, free beer at check-in, and free record players for guests to use. There is a social hour each evening with complimentary wine.

In front of the lobby there is a classic old Woody station wagon and an iconic, silver Airstream trailer. One of the property’s best selling points is its fantastic location, within walking distance to great food, and a couple miles drive to the ocean, Santa Barbara Airport, and hidden gems such as Lake Los Carneros.

Goleta
Lake Los Carneros offers nature trails, bird watching and old trains a couple miles from the hotel

We heard about Lake Los Carneros from Barry Dorsey, general manager of The Leta. He said if we were looking for a nature walk, with beautiful scenery and animals, and lots of history then the lake was a must-see.

Located two miles from the hotel, the 136-acre Lake Los Carneros recreation area boasts numerous trails, small forests, and a bridge to explore. Los Carneros Park Trail is a 1 mile moderately trafficked loop trail that is good for all skill levels. The trail is primarily used for hiking, walking, nature trips, and birding and is accessible year-round. Dogs are also able to use this trail but must be kept on leash.

Goleta
Train history and rides are also available at Lake Los Carneros

Lake Los Carneros (https://www.santabarbara.com/activities/parks/lake-los-carneros/) is also great for bird watching. There are migrant Rufous and Allen’s hummingbirds, warblers, tanagers, and grosbeaks, who are attracted to the fruits of the shrubs planted along the pathways and around the lake. The lake itself is frequented by Soras, Great Blue Herons, Virginia Rails, and more. Anytime of year you will find raptors hunting for prey. This is a great place to watch the many varieties of ducks that migrate here in the winter.

If this isn’t enough, the lake also boasts an 1873 Victorian home named Stow House, an old Southern Pacific box car, and small train rides for kids at the nearby Goleta Depot.

After enjoying the lake, we headed back to The Leta Hotel for an afternoon swim. We then walked across the street and found Nikka Fish Market and Grill (www.nikkafish.com) for lunch. This popular local eatery serves up an exciting and eclectic seafood mix, with touches of Mexican, Japanese, Thai, and Sri Lankan spices.

For our lunch we split a bowl of Nikka Cioppino with sautéed salmon, mahi-mahi, shrimp, crab leg, scallops, clams, tomatoes, onions, zucchini, and bell peppers, in a tomato basil sauce. Served with fries or salad, the dish was delicious and memorable. We also sampled the spicy and tasty Pasilla peppers, stuffed with shrimp, brown rice, zucchini, bell peppers, and onions.

Goleta
Goleta Beach offers parking and plenty of room to stretch out on the sand

After lunch we drove 5 minutes from The Leta Hotel to Goleta Beach Park (www.santabarbara.com/activities/beaches/goleta/goleta-beach-park/). Here we found a lovely, sandy beach, with lots of free parking spots right next to the water. We also found plenty of room to toss our blanket down, relax in the sand, build castles and play in the water.

Goleta
The long, sandy beach is great for walks and fishing on the pier

Besides great surf and sand, Goleta Beach Park features 29 acres of grass, with numerous grills and picnic tables. There is also a paved bike path at the park that goes all the way to Santa Barbara and 1,500-ft-long Goleta Pier that is perfect for fishing and strolling.

For wine lovers, The Leta Hotel is also close to Santa Barbara’s world famous wine country (www.sbcountywines.com) a region known for some of the best Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Santa Barbara County vineyards produce more than 70 varietals, primarily Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Syrah, and Cabernet, in seven approved AVAs (American Viticulture Areas). More than 275 wineries speckle the landscape in rural northern Santa Barbara County and line the streets of cities, towns, and villages.

Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers Movie Review

Rescue Rangers

Flashback to 1988: Classic animation dominated the market, fans of all ages were coming off the high of the Disney Afternoon, and Walt Disney Animation Studios was preparing to enter a golden era of animation with the Disney Renaissance. Fans of all ages reaped the benefits, with clever adaptations springing up on the small screen in ways nobody could have ever dreamed of.

Whether we look at the Indiana Jones-esque inspired adventures of DuckTales, or the high flying hi-jinks that brought Baloo of the pages The Jungle Book for TaleSpin, there were so many incredibly iconic series being created that found a way to keep these beloved Disney characters in the limelight for a new generation.

One of these legendary series of course was Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers. The series hit all the right boxes, being a nice mix of the classic detective genre that still held onto the classic Disney charm and antics that you’d expect from an animated short.

It was funny, it was zany, and brought in a fresh take on two of Disney’s most recognizable characters while bringing everyone new favorites like Gadget and Monterey Jack. Disney took the 80s, threw it in a blender, and brought out a product that would stand the test of time. To this Day, Rescue Rangers is still one of the most beloved Disney animated series of all time.

It’s not even a surprise that after all these years, Disney would decide to revisit the series. In a time where nostalgia is dialed up to a dominant overload, and an era where live action remakes, reboot culture, and legacy sequels make us feel like we woke up in the early 90s, this film fits right in with the audience demand. Rescue Rangers was brought back, and the question that Disney Afternoon diehards have to ask themselves is: Is Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers worth it?

Rescue Rangers

To answer that question, we first take a look at the film that this film took inspiration from, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The film not only broke the fourth wall, it shattered expectations; and as a result, brought us a world where animation and live action lived side by side, creating a groundbreaking experience that set the example for animators for years to come.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit was in the purest sense of the phrase, a love letter to animation of all kinds. All these years later, Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers takes up that mantle, and in essence, breaks down the fourth wall even further, giving fans another glimpse into a world where our favorite animated characters coexist in our crazy reality. The result is a stunning display of remarkable and cutting edge animation that visits all eras of the medium and features a grab bag of fun easter eggs and funny moments worth revisiting beyond the first viewing.

Rescue Rangers

It also holds up a mirror to the vacuum of nostalgia, not being afraid to make fun of the very industry that created it. A perfect example of comparison would be the 90s action classic, Last Action Hero. Like the Schwarzenegger flick, Rescue Rangers plays with the commonly used tropes, gags, and cliches that help define the medium.

All the while, looking back at some of the industry’s not so successful moments and failed ideas, laughing along with us as we explore how truly weird the world of animation really is. So much has changed, and through the good, the bad, and the truly ugly, animation has been through so many iterations. It’s refreshing to get to look at it through this lens, being on the nose just enough to keep you intrigued and giggling versus running for the exit wondering why.

Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers brings the humor, and in some of the weirdest ways, provides us all some reassurance that despite all the truly bizarre things we endure, there is always a little room for the familiar to remind us that it is okay to laugh, start fresh, and enjoy the moment.

Rescue Rangers

Chip ‘N Dale Rescue Rangers streams on Disney+ May 20, 2022.

An intimate instructional documentary series, “Sketchbook” with Walt Disney Animation Studios takes us onto the desks and into the lives of talented artists and animators as they teach us how to draw a single iconic character from a Walt Disney Animation Studios film. Each episode focuses on a single artist illustrating a character that either they helped create or inspired them to want to be an artist at the Studio.

As we learn the steps to drawing these characters, we also discover that the artists each have a unique story to tell about how they made their way to Disney and their chosen character. From the creators of “Chef’s Table,” this exclusive experience will give viewers of all ages a new understanding of how these beloved characters come to life on-screen while introducing them to a new cast of real-life characters along the way.

Sketchbook

“This series is an unprecedented look at what it takes to bring these beloved characters to life,” says Jason Sterman, director and executive producer, Supper Club. “We are honored to feature this incredible group of artists who trusted us not only with presenting their skillset, but with sharing their personal, and often emotional, stories with the world. We’re looking forward to audiences becoming inspired to hopefully pick up a pencil and put it to paper themselves.”

“Think back to your favorite films from Walt Disney Animation Studios, whether from our earliest days, the films of our 1990s renaissance or the award-winning films of today like ‘Encanto’ and ‘Frozen,’ every film starts with an idea, a pencil and an artist. And within the thousands of artists who have created our 60 films over the last century, every person has a unique and special story,” says series executive producer Amy Astley, senior vice president, Publicity/Communications, Creative Legacy, and Brand Strategy for Walt Disney Animation Studios. “It was an honor to partner with Supper Club, whose projects such as ‘Chef’s Table’ create beautifully captured, intimate portraits of talented people.

Peter Pan “Captain Hook”
Growing up in South Korea, Disney animator and character designer Jin Kim was always fascinated by the villains of Disney’s films. As Jin teaches us to draw “Peter Pan’s” “Captain Hook” we learn that his journey to America and working at Disney almost didn’t happen because of his colorblindness.

Encanto “Mirabel”
Disney Animation story artist Samantha Vilfort teaches us how to draw one of the Studio’s newest characters, “Mirabel Madrigal,” from the award-winning hit film “Encanto.” Through her story we learn that her connection to Mirabel’s struggle of being different from everyone else in her family hits close to home.

The Lion King “Simba”
Storied Disney animator Mark Henn teaches us how to draw one of his favorite character designs, “Young Simba” from “The Lion King.” Through Mark’s story, we learn the importance of never giving up on your dreams, even in the face of rejection.

Disney’s Newsies Theatre Review

Newsies

Extra! Extra! Newsboys “Seize the Day” with a brand new production of the Tony-award winning musical as 3-D Theatricals presents “Disney’s Newsies” at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts!

Live theater is back and better than ever in Cerritos after a two year absence. The audience and especially the cast and crew of this state-of-the-art facility is ready to stop the presses and knock your socks off with this high-energy spectacular.

Based on the true story of the Newsboys Strike of 1899 and the 1992 Disney live-action musical film of the same name, this family-friendly production centers on Jack Kelly, a rebellious newsboy who dreams of being an artist far away from New York City for Santa Fe. When publishing giant, Joseph Pulitzer, raises newspaper prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack and his fellow newsies band together in protest with the help of a new reporter, Katherine, making New York wake up to the power of “the little man.”

It’s a classic and timeless tale of David vs Goliath. It’s a fascinating set of circumstances when a real-life event turned into an underappreciated live-action film musical with so much love and devotion from fans that found new life on stage. The behind the scenes story is just as fascinating as the story audiences will adore again and again. There’s no challenge the “Newsies” have yet to face and has overcome. There are even members of the cast that have waited two long years to be able to perform this show for fans.

Production designs consists of brick housing for the wings of the stage and metal scaffolding center stage. The scaffolding is manually pushed in, out, spins, and manipulated to fit the required settings providing the illusion of fire escapes, fenced gates, theater seating, backstage rigging, dreadful housing, and may appear limited at first glance, but the transfiguration and performers sell the space.

Several occasions call for the stage to open up for Medda’s stage show, Pulitzer’s office, and local restaurant. Thankfully projections are limited to a rooftop backdrop and animated chalkboard signage as the stage relies more on showcasing the performers interacting with the practical applications of the talented design team.

“Newsies” stacks up an impressive cast of performers who deserve front page news. Dillion Klena as dreamy “Jack Kelly”. Charming looks and deviant voice can only take him and his cohorts so far. Allison Sheppard as the sweet writer “Katherine”. Is her alliance a good sell? Norman Large as nefarious “Joseph Pulitzer” stirs up trouble retaining his power and influence.

The audience favorite and show-stopping numbers with “Carrying the Banner”, “Seize the Day” and “King of New York” will want to make you jump out of your seat to join the cast in flips, spins, and kicks. The gravity-defying acrobatics whisks the audience into a heart-pounding whirl of joy. You’ll buy into and eat up the irresistible toe-tapping, high-energy of “Newsies”. Outperforming the movie and surpasses the convenience of streaming services. This show is meant to be experienced live on stage with an excitable audience.

Disney and Pixar’s New Feature Film “Elemental” Details Revealed

Pixar Animation Studios revealed details about its 27th feature film, “Elemental,” which will release on June 16, 2023. Directed by Peter Sohn (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Partly Cloudy” short) and produced by Denise Ream (“The Good Dinosaur,” “Cars 2”), the film journeys alongside an unlikely pair, Ember and Wade, in a city where fire-, water-, land- and air-residents live together.

The fiery young woman and the go-with-the-flow guy are about to discover something elemental: how much they actually have in common.

Pixar

“Elemental” is an original film inspired by Sohn’s childhood in New York. “My parents emigrated from Korea in the early 1970s and built a bustling grocery store in the Bronx,” said the director.

“We were among many families who ventured to a new land with hopes and dreams—all of us mixing into one big salad bowl of cultures, languages and beautiful little neighborhoods. That’s what led me to ‘Elemental.’

“Our story is based on the classic elements—fire, water, land and air,” Sohn continued. “Some elements mix with each other, and some don’t. What if these elements were alive?”

Now out in theaters is Marvel Studios’ next step into Phase Four, the blockbuster Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Doctor Strange

In this continuation of the events following WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home, we find Stephen Strange wistfully confronting some of the various changes and sacrifices his life has absorbed from being snapped away for five years by Thanos in Avengers: Endgame.  In the middle of these musings comes barrelling in America Chavez–a young girl pursued by unknown forces for her power to travel all the myriad different parallel realities that make up the Multiverse.  Who is pursuing her?  For what purpose?  Strange must discover these answers while protecting Chavez and doing battle with and against alternate versions of everyone he knows…including himself.

To talk about the new hit film (while cagily avoiding spoilers,) cast and creatives from Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness met to field questions on evolving their old characters and introducing some new ones.  Those present included Benedict Cumberbatch (“Stephen Strange,”) Elizabeth Olsen (“Wanda Maximoff,”) Benedict Wong (“Wong,”) Xochitl Gomez (“America Chavez,”) Sam Raimi (Director,) Michael Waldron (Screenwriter,) and of course Kevin Feige (Executive Producer.)

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Press Conference highlights:

Raimi on creating the Multiverse:  “The most important thing is having great actors, like these two. Like this gentleman (Cumberbatch). Like this young lady (Olsen.)  And them knowing that the most important thing they can do is within themselves.  That’s how people connect to our superheroes…these are great actors and they know what it’s like to be a human being.  They’ve got a vast set of experiences that they’re not afraid to pull into their performances and they also know their characters very well.

“These three at least have played their characters for so many years now in so many important Marvel movies–it’s great to see that knowledge of their characters that they had in this film.  Because what they meet is the Multiverse.  In the Multiverse, it’s basically a mirror and they meet altered versions of themselves.  These actors are so good, they know they just have to change the slightest aspect of their character’s personality to make an interesting conflict with the alter-self.”

Cumberbatch on developing Stephen Strange:  “I think we see in the film an iteration of somebody who we’ve seen very omnipotent…and yet, we haven’t really understood what the cost of that is–what it is that’s fueling that, both him as a person, but also within this mysterious realm of sorcery and magic.  So, this one is about examining that and finding his flaws, his faults, his humanity, as well as his strengths and renewing our understanding of him and deepening our understanding of him.

“But, I will say this:  He’s far better at being a collaborator, at working with others, at realizing he can’t always be the one to hold the knife and control all himself…he’s evolving. There’s that.”

Doctor Strange

Cumberbatch on Strange in No Way Home “That was him trying to be an adult.  Trying to be a sort of guardian, I guess and getting it very wrong, to be honest.  You know, there was some poor parenting in that film.  I mean, he got angry with the kid.  He tried to take the toy back.  It all went a bit wrong but he’s not rigid.  He’s a very flexible character who is malleable to his experience.  He’s a very quick learner as we know.  Not just intellectually, but I think emotionally now as well.  He’s deepening his emotional language.”

Doctor Strange
Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff in Marvel Studios’ DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Photo courtesy of Marvel Studios. ©Marvel Studios 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Olsen on Wanda after WandaVision “I feel like in the previous films before WandaVision, I took up a lane for storytelling that was more grounded in sincerity, love, loss, grief…and with WandaVision, I got to become anything and everything and really, really grow her into a woman, leading her to accept that she is this mythic woman and that that is her destiny.  I hope that in this film people see that continuation of her acceptance of who she is and the journey that she has taken to get to this moment.  I feel like she has way more clarity now than ever in this film.

“I just think that my biggest goal for everything is to play the lawyer to my character. And to defend, defend, defend.  So whether or not their greatest strength is their greatest weakness, wherever they’re coming from, or whatever they’re processing, my goal is to just defend their perspective.

“But I do think she’s constantly processing, and I enjoy that even in WandaVision, and all of the films I’ve gotten to do, she’s constantly straddling this line.  And usually in her biggest emotive losses or griefs is when something’s born.”

Doctor Strange
Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez in Marvel Studios’ DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Photo by Jay Maidment. ©Marvel Studios 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Feige on America Chavez’s LGBTQ+ status:  “Well, it’s important.  We always say that these films represent the world as it is and the world outside your window, as they used to
say in publishing.  That aspect of America’s character is from the comics, so we always want to adapt them as well and as truthfully as we can.  I think when people see the movie, much like in life, it is not, you know, any one thing that defines any one character.  As Xochi said, she’s a 14-year-old girl figuring out this very traumatic element of her life, which is not the LGBT issue.  It is the fact that she keeps being tossed around the multiverse multiple, multiple times and being truthful to that and showcasing that.  And again, that is not what the movie is about, but it is an important part of the character she becomes in the comics, so we wanted to touch up on that.”

Doctor Strange
Benedict Wong as Wong in Marvel Studios’ DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS. Photo courtesy of Marvel Studios. ©Marvel Studios 2022. All Rights Reserved.

Wong on Wong:  “I think when I first took the job six years ago, we moved away from the old source material, which was old, and we developed and crafted this no-nonsense midfield general librarian, who’s continued through four or five of the movies and now is the no-nonsense Sorcerer Supreme.  I love where we’re going with this and the character progression of that. And, we’ll see what unveils with this.

“You work on fries for a while, then you get to be area manager.”

Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters everywhere.

Review Top Gun: Maverick Soars Above Expectations

Top Gun

Revving up your engines, Top Gun: Maverick is finally here, filled with plenty of epic and nostalgic nods, all while breaking new ground and introducing the next generation of fans to the wonders of naval aviation. After fans were surprised with the teaser trailer for Top Gun: Maverick at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, the world would have to wait 3 years to see Pete Mitchell back in the cockpit and on the back of his iconic motorcycle. In that time, there’s been plenty of speculation, anticipation, and curiosity.

Times have changed, and with it, plenty of legacy sequels have come and gone. Some have hit us right in all the right places, while others have crashed and burned. Does Top Gun: Maverick have what it takes to be best of the best? Let’s shove it into overdrive and take a look at what fans can expect from Tom Cruise’s latest adventure!

Top Gun

Maverick is back, and with him, so are the iconic aviators, his fast moving Kawasaki Ninja, and his legendary leather jacket. 36 years years since his historic toe to toe battle with Russian MiGs over the Indian Ocean, Maverick is still flying and now taking on a top secret mission that will put him to the ultimate test.

Along with Maverick, comes a new generation of hot shots, all the best of the best in their own right. Tensions will rise, challenges are set, and relationships are tested. The stakes couldn’t be higher, especially when Maverick comes face to face with his past through the eyes of his late copilot’s son, “Rooster”. Maverick will have to face his fears and relive the trauma of Goose’s death.

Top Gun

It’s an epic, emotional battleground, and one that really brings depth to the picture. It takes more than fancy flying to make a good film, but with Top Gun: Maverick, the full package comes together, giving the audience a dazzling combination of cinematography, editing, and truly organized chaos that will take you directly to the Danger Zone.

It’s a breathtaking and invigorating thrill ride that only gets better each and every time the film punches you back above the hard deck and into the skies.

The pacing of the story takes its time to play out the drama both in the skies and on the ground. With the new cast’s dynamic really shining through, staying focused on the story at hand while not veering too far off the scopes into a campy and cheap 80s grab bag of nostalgia.

Top Gun

Instead, the film crafts the nostalgia in a way to pay homage to the original, instead of taking away or becoming a distraction from what’s new. The end result is a narrative that actually carries the weight of the story quite well, while reminding fans what made the original such an iconic hit.

For those curious, Val Kilmer does indeed make an on-screen impressionable appearance. Iceman returns, and with him, a true wingman and foil, helping Maverick getting out of tight spots whenever he can as a commander.

Kilmer’s return was done with such grace, hitting all the right marks and proving to be an essential part of the film. The chemistry between Cruise and Kilmer remain strong, really pulling the heartstrings in awe, keeping us all grounded and focused on these two legendary characters.

Top Gun

The new action drama is a worthy sequel that manages to both takeoff beautifully and makes a solid landing. Everything a fan would want in this long-awaited follow-up is given and then some. At the same time, the film works as a standalone for new audience members walking in without having seen the original.

The CGI is kept to a minimum and hardly noticeable at times. That is clearly appreciated with the actors flying the planes themselves. It makes the scenes feel all the more authentic, which was exactly Tom Cruise’s goal. The entire project was a work of pure marvel, pushing the edge of practical effects in a way that like its predecessor, will allow Top Gun: Maverick to stand the test of time. This is a true theater going experience, that’s top notch and soars above all expectations. Tony Scott would be proud!

Top Gun: Maverick releases in movie theaters worldwide on Friday, May 27. Tickets are now on sale.

Movie Review Marvel’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness”

Marvel

The multiverse has been unleashed in full fury, bringing with it plenty of chills, thrills, and mind bending questions through Marvel’s latest release, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. It feels like just yesterday when fans came together for the 2019 San Diego Comic Con presentation, getting a full view of Marvel’s post-Endgame plans, all leading up to the the big reveal of Doctor Strange through the mysterious and ever evolving multiverse.

For almost three years now, fans have been teased with build up, going back to WandaVision, to Loki, and finally, Spider-Man: No Way Home. Each project leaving breadcrumbs, making fans wonder what was next, what variants, turmoils, and “strange” alternate timelines we would be venturing into. Rest assured, there are no spoilers to be found in this review, but we still have quite a lot to say about Doctor Strange’s latest adventure.

From the very beginning, this film breaks out of the Marvel formula with wit and style. Every element brings back the tone and freaky musings of Sam Raimi in the best way possible. Whether or not you were a fan of the original Spider-Man films (Doc Ock’s horrific ER Scene in Spider-Man 2 being a great example), or go back to his Evil Dead days (Bless you Bruce Campbell), Raimi achieves a truly remarkable feat: Giving his signature horrific twist, while still holding onto enough of that classic Marvel charm that will keep both horror and non-horror fans engaged. It’s a great gateway to the darker side of cinema and a welcome reprieve from the classic super hero formula.

As we venture through the wacky twists and turns of Multiverse of Madness, what stands out is Raimi’s decision to stray from the expectations of social media forums. Instead of  using an endless list of over the top cameos and nods to nostalgia driven character introductions, Raimi decided to keep things more focused in scope. Though cameos and easter eggs can be a lot of fun for the viewer, too many can bloat the story and create too many loose ends to keep the story moving. It was a total blast to see the epic Spidey reunion of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home, and the chaos of all the Tom Hiddleston variants that came from Loki, but to continue on that same path on repeat may spell disaster.

Instead, Multiverse of Madness really takes the time to hone in on the peril and consequences for all caught up in the insanity rather than the larger scale of the multiverse itself. That’s not to say there aren’t some fun surprises in store, or fan wishes fulfilled, but this film definitely doesn’t allow those moments to take away from the core of story. The mix is just right and though there were some disappointed murmurs from some more classic Marvel formula driven fans, there was still plenty of exciting energy in the theater looking at what this film had to offer.

Marvel

As a result, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen shine brightly, bringing a fresh take on their characters that really commits to the spooky elements of this much darker take on their previous Marvel iterations. With so much at stake for both in this story, it was absolutely thrilling to see how well these two worked throughout the fabric of the story, bringing the best out of each other, and challenging fan expectations of what to expect from both Wanda and Strange in a way that many not have guessed.

That being said, let’s not forget the supporting work done by newcomer to the Marvel Universe, Xochitl Gomez. Gomez fits perfectly in with the veteran cast, with a standout performance that is both vulnerable and genuine. She hits all the marks for Marvel, bringing both a fresh perspective to the franchise, as well as a steady and light hearted element that really makes you want to root for her. Her chemistry with Cumberbatch is electric. Rachel McAdams and Benedict Wong also steal the limelight, making this team up an even more powerful mix of awesome.

Another element that cannot be missed is the musical stylings of Danny Elfman, a long standing partner with Raimi and a legendary name in the world of film score of his own right. Elfman’s zany and truly one-of-a-kind instrumentals really carry the film from one insane jump to the next, diving off the deep end to bring Marvel that much closer to the ever familiar darker genre of the bizarre.

Marvel

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a truly enjoyable adventure that proves without a doubt that Marvel has more to tell than a traditional superhero flick. Though the film may not be everyone’s cup of tea, it really bursts open a sea of possibilities, leaving plenty of room for fans to stay, eagerly waiting for the next chapter and look for hints in the end credits. Yes, there is both a mid and end credits scene for this film…But, any Marvel veteran could tell you that leaving during the credits is not an option. For those yet to see the film, a maddening masterpiece and delightfully dark tale await. The multiverse is here and with so many things yet to explore, we cannot wait for Strange and company to return!
