The Play Disney Parks App will become the Star Wars: Datapad, giving guests the opportunity to earn galactic credits that have the power to unlock activities and adventures within the land. Take a look at the four primary functions of the Datapad, all which will be at your fingertips upon your first visit to Galaxy’s Edge!
Hack- Interact with certain droids, blinking door panels, and other scenic elements throughout Batuu.
Scan- Explore hidden contents of cargo crates and containers, collecting virtual items as you go.
Translate- Understand written languages, such as Aurebesh, from across the Star Wars Galaxy.
Tune- Tap into the signals from satellite dishes and antenna arrays, giving you the inside information on character’s conversations and activities throughout Galaxy’s Edge.
Using these features also unlocks other fun activities within the land, including, “Outpost Control”, which is an interactive game that occurs several times throughout the day. The First Order has cleverly installed surveillance devices in the door panels to spy on the Resistance. Meanwhile, the Resistance seeks to destroy them.
Star Wars: GalaxyÕs Edge is the first land within a Disney park designed to integrate with the Play Disney Parks mobile app, which debuted last year. Guests who choose to use the Play Disney Parks app in Star Wars: GalaxyÕs Edge at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, and at Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, will be able to transform it into their very own Star Wars: Datapad. The app provides new opportunities for guests to engage with the land. (Richard Harbaugh/Disney Parks)
Guests will get the chance to support either side by hacking the panels for either the Resistance or the First Order. The game comes to an end when one side successfully hacks the majority of the available panels.
Meanwhile, guests may also join the ranks of pirate, Hondo Ohnaka while waiting to board the Falcon in Millennium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run. Through the use of certain functions, guests will be able to keep themselves occupied and prove their worth to pilot the famous freighter.
There will be plenty of other amazing features, including the ability to perform certain functions that will trigger physical effects within the land. It’s all part of the larger goal of creating a fully immersive experience that brings you right into the world of Star Wars. How your journey plays out is up to you, so choose wisely when you make your journey to Batuu!

Madrid, Spain is full of history and culture, great food, beautiful plazas and exciting nightlife (photo - Will Bilton)
As Spain’s largest and most populous city, Madrid might sound too big and touristy to have an authentic Spanish experience. But as I learned on a recent trip to the ancient, European capital, if you just take your time and explore, you can encounter a great amount of the history, culture, and fun.
My getaway to Madrid began a couple of weeks ago when a friend unexpectedly came across an extra plane ticket and invited me on a last-minute business trip (or should I say mini-vacation). The next thing I knew I was strolling around a giant public square, eating tapas and practicing my Spanish on locals.
After landing in Madrid, our first stop was the Holiday Inn Madrid-Piramides, where we made camp for the next three nights. A modern hotel near Madrid’s La Latina quarter and the Pirámides railway and metro station, the place offers easy access to the historic city center by foot or mass transit. Like other Holiday Inn’s that I’ve stayed in, the room was clean and efficient. Ours came with two beds, free WiFi, mini-bar, coffee maker, large TV, office/workstation and friendly staff.
Once settled into the hotel, my friend went to work and I went exploring. As the capital of Spain, Madrid is where the government and the Spanish monarch reside and it is seen as the economic and cultural center of the country. The city sits on the River Manzanares and is full of historic architecture, art museums, beautiful plazas, countless restaurants and shopping, and more.
A few local landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Royal Theatre with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro Park, founded in 1631; and the 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain’s historical archives.
One of the highlights of my visit was a walk to Plaza Mayor, one of the most popular public spaces in the heart of Madrid. Originally built between 1580 and 1619, during the Habsburg period of Philip III‘s reign, the rectangular-shaped plaza has hosted public executions, bullfights, and soccer games. Today it is the site of the annual Christmas market and is where locals and tourists meet to shop, walk around, eat, and enjoy being outside.
The architecture of the plaza features hundreds of balconies lining long, three-story residential buildings that are capped by towers. In the center of the square is a large statue of Philip III on horseback from 1848. Near the plaza is the Royal Palace, an imposing building dating from the 17th century and featuring a mixture of Baroque and classicist styles.
Another must-see attraction near the Plaza Mayor is the historic Sobrino de Botín (www.botin.es/en), which was founded in 1725, and according to Guinness Book of Records, is the oldest restaurant continuously operating in the world. Mentioned in an Ernest Hemingway novel, the restaurant is known for its house specialty, suckling pig, cooked in the original ovens dating back to 1725.
Sobrino de Botín was too crowded when we were in town, so we found a tasty alternative called Venta El Buscon. Here we enjoyed a pitcher of sangria and split a plate of paella with shrimp. I also sampled the oxtail soup and it was awesome, with deep, rich flavors and a side of French fries. We had so much food we took some with us back to the hotel.
Venta El Buscon serves great sangria, paella and atmosphere (photo by Will Bilton)
The next day I walked to another famous public square, the Puerta del Sol. Originally the site of one of the city’s main gates, Puerta del Sol is home to the famous New Year’s Eve clock that sits atop the Casa de Correos building. Other interesting things to see at the square include the starting point for Madrid’s longest street, Calle Alcalá; the Oso y Madroño statue of a bear eating from a strawberry tree; the King Charles III statue; and the legendary Tio Pepe neon sign, which has dominated the skyline of Madrid’s central square since 1936. The 50,000-pound sign, which promotes a popular sherry brand, sits on top of a building and stands about 26 ft-tall and stretches nearly 80 ft-wide.

The attention to detail is fantastic, providing plenty of picturesque views of the local scenery and really setting you up for a truly authentic frontier experience. As travelers make their way through the trail, they are met with countless creatures, including woodpeckers. threatening rattlesnakes, and a lone wolf that howls towards passerby as they embark on their river journey.
An abandoned moonshine operation along the nature hike
There are so many stunning scenes, a personal favorite being when you get the chance to stumble upon a fallen piece of timber, home to a majestic bear seeking their meal from the river. The bear stands on a rushing riverbank, making a fresh catch of fish. The entire buildup to the attraction’s climax is so immersive, it’s hard not to fall in love with the imagery throughout the entire experience.

The attraction’s new theme adds that next level of charm, fitting in perfectly with the unique qualities that make Knott’s Berry Farm stand out. It also delivers from different perspectives, building up anticipation on what comes next, giving each rider a chance to ease into the adventure.

Even if you aren’t on the attraction, you can still be involved, as the experience welcomes spectators to join in the fun and soak riders as they go by. All it takes is a simple push down on the handle and aim away. But beware, as the plunger may backfire, leaving you running for cover from the downpour.
Rafts traversing treacherous waterways
For those who may not know, Calico River Rapids is an updated version of the original Knott’s attraction, Bigfoot Rapids. Though the mysterious creature was heavily alluded to in the past, fans never got the chance to see more than subtle hints of its existence, such as footprints throughout the ride’s queue. After 30 years, the veil is lifted, as we get our first look at the creature in the ride’s grand finale.
A lone wolf howls at explorers aboard their vessel
After flowing under the Pony Express track that looms overhead, the river follows a straight path past a wrecked covered wagon. Travelers then are taken right past the Bigfoot’s homestead, where they get to lock eyes with the legendary creature.
The new story line really ties the aging rapids ride to the rest of Ghost town. Thematically for years, Bigfoot Rapids felt like an out of place outcast that didn’t feel like it belonged. Knott’s Berry Farm and Garner Holt Productions can be proud the goal they set out to do has been accomplished.
The queue winds its way thru this new path. This area used to be a series of switchbacks in the outdoors. A night and day difference between being an amusement park versus a theme park.A raft rips thru the raging river
This is a very welcome and fun addition to a sorely needed attraction that was a prime candidate for a facelift. A job well done for reinvigorating life back into this corner of park. Make sure to visit for yourself during Knott’s Berry Farm’s Seasons of Fun event. There’s so much to see and do. Happy trails! Can’t wait to join you on the adventure.
