Halle Bailey Performs ‘Part of Your World’ at Disneyland

Part of Your World

Halle Bailey performed Part of Your World from Disney’s “The Little Mermaid.” The singer-actress, who stars as Ariel in the upcoming live-action film, performed the song for hundreds of fans in front of Sleeping Beauty’s castle at the Disneyland Resort. The Little Mermaid,” helmed by visionary filmmaker Rob Marshall, opens exclusively in theaters nationwide on May 26, 2023.

“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea and, while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden from interacting with humans, Ariel must follow her heart.

She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy. The film stars singer and actress Halle Bailey (“grown-ish”) as Ariel; Jonah Hauer-King (“A Dog’s Way Home”) as Eric; Tony Award® winner Daveed Diggs (“Hamilton”) as the voice of Sebastian; Awkwafina (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) as the voice of Scuttle; Jacob Tremblay (“Luca”) as the voice of Flounder; Noma Dumezweni (“Mary Poppins Returns”) as The Queen; Art Malik (“Homeland”) as Sir Grimsby; with Oscar® winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men”) as King Triton; and two-time Academy Award® nominee Melissa McCarthy (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” “Bridesmaids”) as Ursula.

Theatre Review: SIX The Musical

Six the Musical

Wow. What can I say about SIX the Musical? The number of costumes spotted in the audience told me this show has several fans already. I was really looking forward to this one from all the hype and boy did it deliver!

A word used in the show to describe the experience best is “Historemix”, as it’s a telling and retelling of the stories of the infamous six wives of King Henry VIII.  However, the other important play on words they use is “Her-story” because the point of this show is to highlight the wives and retell their stories in a way that is not focused on Henry but focused on them as women. In fact, this show is so focused on spotlighting women, that the entire band and the conductor are also women!

If you are coming to this show not really knowing what to expect, expect to go through every emotion while watching a 90-minute concert chock-full of bangers with no intermission (you won’t miss it). The pacing is great, the energy is high, and WOW can these queens SING! While there are three great songs highlighting all six queens, each of them also has its own song to tell their story.

Please take an opportunity before the curtain to open the Playbill and read a quick synopsis of their legacy and a hint of what to expect from their performance. In 9 amazing songs, you are taken on a delightful and emotional journey that will—If you’re like me—send you down a Google rabbit hole when you get home about the other 5 wives (we all know Anne Boleyn).

Haunted Mansion

The show begins with an upbeat musical summary of the outcomes for each of the wives and a proposal that they should compete to see which queen will win the night with the audience based on how unfortunate their story was compared to the others, later realizing that they now have the power in this retelling to rewrite their own endings and unite against Henry VIII instead of each other.

It’s difficult to really find a standout performer in this show. It honestly gives both the warm fuzzies of a musical and the rush of attending an A-list pop concert. The format allows each performer to showcase their insane vocal prowess. My favorite number was “Get Down” performed by Anna of Cleves (Olivia Donalson) because it was just SO good. It was well performed and funny with high-energy physical comedic and dancing.

It was preceded by, in my opinion, the most charmingly outrageous number in the show, “Haus of Holbein”. TikTokers may recognize this song as a sound that was viral in 2022, but if you’ve never heard it, you will be delighted by the silliness…don’t forget your green sunglasses! “No Way” sung by Catherine of Aragon (Khaila Wilcoxon) was the best way to open the competition.

Wilcoxon absolutely nails this song, and it’s so exciting and high-energy, people were already starting to dance in their seats, except for one who danced in the aisle! Storm Lever as Anne Boleyn is officially my favorite Anne Boleyn, her performance of “The One You’ve Been Waiting For” was just so bubbly and hilarious. It is wonderful to have Natalie Paris on the tour! As the original Jane Seymour, she expertly breaks your heart with her performance of “Heart of Stone”. Did I tear up? Yes, yes I did. “All You Wanna Do” is reminiscent of Britney Spears’ Circus era, and Courtney Mack as Katherine Howard does an amazing job of performing this song fully.

Haunted Mansion

It’s raunchy, funny, and very physically demanding, and she just kills it. “I Don’t Need Your Love” sung by his final wife, Catherine Parr (Gabriela Carrillo) was another soulful and heartbreaking performance. Her marriage to King Henry VIII meant she couldn’t marry the man she really loved, Thomas Seymour and her song reminiscent of Alicia Keys reflects the torch she held for Thomas. Their “Histo-rewrite” is heartwarming, and I only wish it lasted longer.

The set was very simple and minimalist, relying on the performers to set the scene with some lightning design to fill in. Like many modern Broadway shows, the band was on stage with the performers the entire show and was sometimes looped into the performance. In fact, the performers broke the 4th wall not only in dialogue with their band but with the audience.

I found myself occasionally watching Drummer, Paige Durr, as she expertly switched between a physical drum kit and electronic drums to create the sounds for each song. Gabriella Slade’s costume design is really something and a critical part of the show. Many fans in the audience were wearing their own interpretations of her visions. The dresses worn by the queens were fun and modern with futuristic colors and historical nods.

SIX is modern, energetic, and wonderful! The lyrics are ridiculously clever with puns, wordplay, and suggestiveness that is honestly unmatched in anything I have ever seen. There are many nods to other musicals and musical acts. If you haven’t bought tickets to see it this month, don’t lose your head over it, go grab your tickets now. This is one to remember.

Haunted Mansion

SIX will play five weeks in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Pantages Theatre from May 9 to June 10 with tickets available at www.BroadwayInHollywood.com and www.Ticketmaster.com, or by phone at (800) 982- 2787. The show will then play two weeks in Costa Mesa at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts from June 13 to 25 with tickets available at www.scfta.org and by phone at 1-714-556-2787.

Colombia

The beauty and storytelling of Colombia, the magnificent coastlines and historical sites in Eastern Canada’s Maritime Provinces, plus an enhanced New Zealand itinerary packed with action and adventure welcome guests traveling with Adventures by Disney in 2024.

Headlining the new destinations is Colombia, whose people and cultures sparked the imaginations of Disney storytellers as they created the Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Academy Award-winning film “Encanto.” Now, the travel experts at Disney have curated a one-of-a-kind adventure filled with new discoveries and experiences inspired by the film, and families can go “set-jetting” on their dream trip and see the movie come to life.

An All-New Adventure to Colombia: Bogota, the Coffee Region, Cocora Valley and Cartagena

On this new adventure, guests will be immersed in the diverse cultures and landscapes, get a true taste of the local cuisine, and discover the unique characteristics and beauty of this destination. The brilliant colors found in neighborhoods and architecture, the lush, green landscapes with towering wax palm trees and a kaleidoscope of butterflies, family recipes, traditional customs and music will surround guests as they embrace the splendor of the second most biodiverse country in the world through access and experiences as only Disney can provide.

From the moment “Encanto” directors Byron Howard and Jared Bush visited Colombia, they felt an immediate connection to the country and its people and knew it would be the home of the Madrigal family.

“Every Disney Animation film begins with research, and the trip we took to Colombia as we were developing ‘Encanto’ with Lin-Manuel Miranda immediately brought the story of this magical place and our wondrous Madrigal family to life,” said Howard and Bush. “Colombia is a crossroads of Latin America, and what we learned about family, tradition, music, food, and dance was central to the development of the film. Our hope was always that ‘Encanto’ could celebrate just some of the many different people and cultures we experienced in Colombia – we are thrilled and touched that so many people have felt seen by the Madrigals’ story and now have this opportunity to experience its magic for themselves.”

Haunted Mansion

Highlights of this eight-day, seven-night itinerary include:

  • Visit the capital city of Bogota, where guests will embark on privately guided tours of the Paloquemao Market and Historic City Center.
  • Enjoy Colombian coffee and visit a coffee farm in the Coffee Region to see the process for growing and harvesting coffee beans. The nearby town of Salento is part of the inspiration for the setting of “Encanto,” and the Cocora Valley features the tall, towering wax palms and butterflies as depicted in the film.

Haunted Mansion

  • Experiencing a hands-on arepa-making class, a traditional Latin American dish showcased in “Encanto” by Mirabel’s mother Julieta.
  • Playing the country’s national sport of Tejo, as seen in the film.
  • Exploring the city of Cartagena, which inspired the film’s colorful architecture and fabrics. Central to “Encanto” is the Afro-Caribbean influence, prominent in this city.
  • Trekking the dry forest near Proyecto Titi, an organization dedicated to the preservation of the cotton-top tamarins, a project supported by the Disney Conservation Fund. It was Colombia’s rich biodiversity that inspired the magical ability of the “Encanto” character Antonio, who has the power to communicate with animals.
  • Snorkeling among the Rosario Islands, a collection of 27 islands home to more than 1,300 species of marine animals, vibrantly colored fish and plants.

Haunted Mansion

Each travel party booked on the inaugural 2024 Adventures by Disney Colombia season will receive a signed lithograph of never-before-released artwork from Walt Disney Animation Studios. This piece of visual development artwork by “Encanto” Associate Production Designer Lorelay Bové set the early concept for the new door to Casa Madrigal that would be revealed at the end of the film – a symbol of the new miracle that Mirabel and her family create together through honesty and love. Bové’s work includes such Walt Disney Animation Studios films as “The Princess and the Frog,” “Tangled,” “Zootopia,” “Big Hero 6” and more.

Adventures by Disney is opening new doors, creating even more ways for families to discover a different kind of magic: the magic of the world around them.

Peru

Haunted Mansion

It only feels right to start with the opening scene of “Raiders of the Lost Ark”- this excitement is what got us all hooked from the start! During this sequence, we got our first glimpse of the archeologist’s skills as he navigates booby traps inside an ancient Peruvian temple to reach a golden idol.

The Peru: Land of the Inca trip and Wild Galapagos and Peru Escape Expedition Cruise also brings travelers to amazing ruins and archeological sites – without booby traps, of course. With the help of local experts, travelers can explore archeological sites in the Sacred Valley that have yielded incredible historical insights into a thriving Inca community and see the famous ruins at Machu Picchu.

Portugal

A quest to recover a long sought-after artifact finds Indy on board an enemy ship along the Portuguese coast during a very stormy evening at the beginning of “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.”

The coastline is a beautiful spot to sail, and travelers on the Culture and Cuisine: From Oporto to Basque Country by Sea expedition cruise will get to experience that voyage as they make their way from Portugal all the way to Bordeaux, France.

During their time at port in Lisbon, travelers will learn about Portugal’s seafaring history with a tour of monuments from the Age of Exploration, including the 16th-century Belém Tower. This incredible shoreside UNESCO World Heritage Site was once used to defend the city!

Egypt

Haunted Mansion

In “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Indy’s search for the Ark of the Covenant brings him to Cairo. The Egypt: Ancient Wonders of the Legendary Nile trip will head there as well, along with National Geographic Experts that share rare behind-the-scenes perspectives and insights.

Just like Indy and Marion, travelers will discover ancient architectural marvels in Cairo. Brave explorers will be thrilled to embark on an excursion into an interior burial chamber inside the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the largest structure in the Pyramids of Giza.

Along the way, travelers also have a chance to discover treasures of their own at a local market called Khan el-Khalili. This well-known market has a wide variety of goods for sale and a great selection of food options, just like the one that Indy and Marion visited.

Still excited to keep exploring after some time in Egypt? There’s an opportunity for travelers to extend their trip with a five-day post-trip extension to discover neighboring Jordan, a country with incredible natural wonders and ancient cities. A highlight of the itinerary is a visit to an iconic royal tomb in Petra called The Treasury, which travelers might recognize as the home of the Holy Grail in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Get all of the important details in the extensions section of the Egypt itinerary page!

Austria

There’s action and betrayal around every corner when Indy ventures into an Austrian castle to save his father in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” The duo’s eventual escape by motorcycle, however, leaves the castle in flames.

National Geographic Expeditions travelers on the Danube River Cruise: Budapest to Vilshofen will get to enjoy all the beauty and amazing architecture of nearby castles during their time in Vienna – and travelers won’t want to miss the guided tour of Schönbrunn Palace. The property was the summer residence of the imperial family, and the well-preserved décor truly takes travelers back in time.

India

In “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom,” Indy and his companions make a crazy descent into India by jumping out of an airplane on an inflatable raft and sledding down the side of the Himalayan Mountains. I definitely wouldn’t recommend this method of exploring this picturesque country, but we can recommend exploring India by train!

Traveling to places not easily accessible by road is a huge perk of embarking on India’s Fabled Rajasthan by Rail trip with National Geographic Expeditions. From meeting locals in small villages to taking in the majesty of the iconic Taj Mahal, this itinerary helps everyone experience all the aspects that make India a can’t-miss country for travelers.

Italy

Haunted Mansion

The search for the Holy Grail brought Indy to the city of Venice in “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.” Audiences saw the amazing city in a flash as the characters expertly dodged foes through the streets, waterways and even the Venetian catacombs.

Venice is a popular stop on the Italy: Renaissance Cities and Tuscan Life trip with National Geographic Expeditions. During a guided (and much slower) tour of the city, travelers will explore the UNESCO World Heritage site with the insights of National Geographic Experts.

Remember the scene where Indy pops out of a manhole right in the middle of an outdoor café? Travelers probably won’t see a recreation of this scene during your private, after-hours dinner at Saint Mark’s Basilica in the very same Piazza San Marco, but it’s always fun to dream!

Morocco

Although Indiana Jones hasn’t gone to Morocco yet, he will soon! The hero is coming back to the big screen for a final time in “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which premieres on June 30, 2023 – and we’ve been told that some of the filming happened in beautiful Morocco. It’s time to go set-jetting to this amazing location!

Have travelers heard of this trend? Set-jetting is when one visits the places where their favorite movies or shows are filmed, and the Morocco: Legendary Cities and the Sahara trip with National Geographic Expeditions is a great chance to discover the region where the cast and crew filmed the latest installment in this beloved franchise.

In 2021, each film was remastered from 4K scans of the original negatives with extensive work done to ensure the most pristine and highest quality image. The pictured work was approved by director Steven Spielberg. In addition, all four films were remixed at Skywalker Sound to create the Dolby Atmos soundtrack.

Each disc will be beautifully packaged with artwork inspired by the original theatrical posters and will include access to a digital copy of each respective film.

There are more than a few ways to celebrate Indiana Jones and his adventures this summer before the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny which opens in theaters on June 30th. With a new director at the helm and a new creative team behind the scenes, time will only tell if the magic behind Indiana Jone’s other adventures can be captured again on the big screen.

Harrison Ford has stated this will be his final outing as Indy and the character’s final outing period on screen. Ford has shared his wish on the role that made him a star, that Indiana never be reprised by any other actor. Time will tell if more adventures that feature Ford’s famous archaeologist will ever appear on the big screen. One thing is for sure, fans have more than a few options to celebrate at home and on the big screen.

The Los Angeles iteration of Immersive Disney Animation will be housed in Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles – the same venue that was home to the popular Original Immersive Van Gogh – in the iconic former Amoeba Music Building at 6400 Sunset Blvd.

Tickets for the Los Angeles presentation of Immersive Disney Animation start at $29.99 and go on sale May 12 at 10 a.m. PT at lighthouseimmersive.com/Disney.

The creative team behind Immersive Disney Animation is led by Oscar®-winning producer J. Miles Dale (Best Picture 2018 -The Shape of Water), Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim (Oscar®-nominated, Get A Horse!), who is spearheading the project for Disney Animation, Lighthouse Immersive’s Global Creative Director David Korins (Tony Award®-nominee for Hamilton, Emmy Award® winner for Grease Live), and Mexico City-based Cocolab.

Immersive Disney Animation was called “jaw-dropping” by Axios, “a peek behind the curtain that you would just never otherwise get” by the Boston Globe, with Elite Daily remarking, “you really feel like you’ve stepped inside your fave film.”

Immersive Disney Animation saw its celebrated world premiere in Toronto in December of 2022. The exhibition is now open in 13 North American cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Cleveland, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Nashville and San Antonio and its first intercontinental presentation in Tokyo, with additional cities soon to be announced.

Haunted Mansion

“The rollout of Immersive Disney Animation has been met with overwhelming positivity and tremendous acclaim in the 13 cities we’ve debuted the show so far,” said Disney Animation Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim. “And we are proud to announce that we will be presenting this spectacular exhibition in the birthplace of Disney Animation, where our studio’s first creations took shape. We can’t imagine a more fitting locale for this celebration of Disney animation, and the incredible artists and animators that bring these worlds to life.”

“Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles has housed one of the most impressive stagings of Immersive Van Gogh for the better part of two years,” said Corey Ross, producer and founder at Lighthouse Immersive Studios. “It is one of the most popular, best-selling venues of the 20+ other Lighthouse ArtSpaces we’ve opened across North America, and Immersive Disney Animation is going to take it to a whole new level.”

Haunted Mansion

Lighthouse ArtSpace Los Angeles is hosting a final slate of showings for Immersive Van Gogh from June 1 – 11 before Immersive Disney Animation takes over as the standalone experience. Tickets are on sale now at vangoghla.com.

Creating iconic animated stories for all ages for nearly a century, Walt Disney Animation Studios has joined forces with North America’s top creator of experiential projection exhibitions (including The Original Immersive Van Gogh) to present the music and artistry within Disney Animation’s canon of films—from hits of today like Encanto, Zootopia and Frozen, to all of the classics including The Lion King, Peter Pan and Pinocchio. Audiences will feel like they’ve entered the incredible worlds of beloved Disney characters and become one with them.

The creative team for the Immersive Disney Animation is led by Oscar®-winning producer J. Miles Dale who said, “As a filmmaker, I am always seeking out ideas that can engage an audience in new and interesting ways, and to show them something that they have never seen before. Using the new technology that the immersive experience offers is exciting, but it’s important that it not interfere with the emotional investment that Disney fans have in the characters and storylines that audiences have come to cherish.

This groundbreaking approach that Lighthouse Immersive Studios has created does exactly that by giving the viewer the sensation that they are actively sharing the space with the characters they most love from the Disney Animation library. Most of our guests have seen these films multiple times, but they tell me that they feel as though they are seeing them in an entirely new way, and that was always our goal.”

Haunted Mansion

Mexico City-based Cocolab worked with Dale and the Creative Legacy team at Walt Disney Animation Studios to develop the program for Lighthouse Immersive Studios. Special Projects Producer Dorothy McKim is spearheading the project for Disney Animation. “Having been a part of Disney Animation for over 40 years, I truly consider this one of the great joys within my career, partnering with Lighthouse Immersive to bring our characters, stories and films to audiences in thrilling and new ways,” said McKim. “Watching the joy and delight the show brings to audiences is what dreams are made of.”

Beyond the unparalleled projection design that Lighthouse Immersive is known for, Immersive Disney Animation is further enhanced by expansive environmental design by Lighthouse Immersive’s Global Creative Director David Korins.

Haunted Mansion

Additional interactive features within the projection show include a responsive floor projection design that moves with the audience and custom bracelets that light up in sync with the projections and are based on the audience’s movements through the galleries. In a particularly show-stopping moment, the Gazillion Bubbles special effects team fills the 500,000 cubic feet of galleries with bubbles.

Ross captures the excitement both Disney and Lighthouse Immersive feel for the project as he describes how it begins: “Just imagine journeying through Zootopia with Judy Hopps, diving to the ocean floor with Ariel, flying on a magic carpet with Aladdin, and stepping into Casita with Mirabel and the family Madrigal. This is where the Immersive Disney Animation takes you.”

Collaborating with Lighthouse Immersive is the Creative Legacy team of Walt Disney Animation Studios, helping bring their library of films to audiences in a manner never before experienced.

Mantis is joining in the fun and can be spotted right out front of Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout along with her brother, Starlord, taking in the Terran sights and busting out a few new dance moves.

Unlike other Avengers and super powered friends you may encounter in Avengers Campus, the Guardians come out exclusively to blast their favorite tunes in the fan favorite show, Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Dance Off.
