Theatre Review: Get ‘On Your Feet’ at La Mirada

La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts & McCoy Rigby Entertainment presents a new musical production of “On Your Feet! The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan”. The original jukebox musical of Cuban-fusion pop songs is based on the life of a 26-time Grammy Award-winning husband-and-wife team with music, lyrics, and orchestrations by Emilio and Gloria Estefan.

Book by Academy Award and Golden Globe winner Alexander Dinelaris (“The Bodyguard” musical). The two stunning leads of this production also originated the world premiere Spanish language version of the show.

Besides being an original Broadway performer, Luis Salgado was also the Assistant Latin Choreographer of “In the Heights” on Broadway and returns now as director and choreographer for the La Mirada Theatre production. Emilio and Gloria Estefan inspire their true story to live music, dancing, singing, and drama about heart, heritage, and two people who believed in their talent, and each other. The show is bookended by Gloria’s (Gaby Albo) concert performance balancing her life backstage with her husband Emilio (Samuel Garnica). The story begins with young Gloria impressing her father through a recording of her singing talent. Growing up in Miami, Gloria’s grandmother Consuelo (Adela Romero) introduces the two foreseeing a potential for success.

However, Gloria’s mother Gloria Fajardo (Kristen Tarragó) has reservations about her daughter pursuing a musical career. Believing a life on the road would pull her away from family and tradition. Gloria and Emilio defy the odds against an uphill climb of self-doubt, expectations, loss, success, exhaustion, tragedy, and recovery. “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” comes to Disney+ in 4k

The feature film that started it all, “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs,” comes to Disney+ in a beautiful 4K restoration on October 16, celebrating The Walt Disney Company’s 100th anniversary. This restored version of the 1937 classic is the result of the combined efforts of the Walt Disney Studios Restoration and Preservation team, working closely with key artists from Walt Disney Animation Studios, the same team who recently worked together on the critically acclaimed restoration of Walt Disney’s 1950 animated classic, “Cinderella.”

Disney Animation artists Michael Giaimo (production designer for the upcoming animated musical adventure “Wish,” as well as “Frozen” and “Frozen 2”) and animator/director Eric Goldberg (head of hand-drawn animation for Disney Animation’s newest short, “Once Upon A Studio,” director, “Pocahontas,” “Fantasia/2000”) were honored to re-team with their colleagues at Walt Disney Studios on the project.

“The opportunity to help restore Snow White was both an honor and a challenge,” said Goldberg. “As the very first Walt Disney feature, Mike Giaimo and I felt we owed a debt to history to get it looking as beautiful, and as accurate to the original colors, as we could. The muted palette and the delicate watercolor backgrounds evoke the illustrated fairy tales that Walt so loved, and the story and characters continue to resonate to this day. I hope our work inspires future generations of animation artists to fully appreciate the masterful talent and care that has gone into this landmark film.”

Kevin Schaeffer, director of Restoration for Walt Disney Studios, said. “We are incredibly excited to go back to Walt’s original negative and use current state-of-the-art technology to restore this stunning classic to its original beauty.”

“Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” stands as one of the greatest triumphs in animation history, as the first full-length cel animated feature in the history of motion pictures. The film was recognized by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences with a special honorary Oscar – one large Oscar accompanied by seven smaller ones – which was presented to Walt Disney by Shirley Temple.

The film is the highest-ranked animated feature on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years…100 Movies” list and was inducted into the National Film Registry in the registry’s inaugural year, 1989.

Disney+ and Disney Parks have revealed the official trailer and key art for season two of the Disney+ Original docuseries “Behind the Attraction,” premiering November 1 on Disney+.

The series, from Disney Branded Television, takes viewers on a ride behind Disney Parks’ most iconic and beloved attractions, featuring the Imagineers who designed them and the Cast Members who operate them.

On the heels of season one’s exploration of staples including Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, “it’s a Small World,” and Space Mountain, season two will continue to showcase more quintessential Disney Parks’ attractions including Pirates of the Caribbean, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Indiana Jones Adventure, EPCOT, The Food, and Nighttime Spectaculars.

The series hails from Dwayne Johnson & Dany Garcia’s Seven Bucks Productions and The Nacelle Company and is narrated by Paget Brewster (“Criminal Minds”).

Six Flags Magic Mountain Celebrates Fright Fest 30th Anniversary

Six Flags Magic Mountain celebrates three decades of Fright Fest with mazes, scare zones, photo props, food, and merchandise. Long-time visitors can expect many stables to continue the scares. Some new and old effects would amuse both frequent and new visitors.

Unlike other major amusement parks, Six Flags does not close daytime operations from the evening frights. Instead, the park remains open and guests are able to obtain Haunted Attractions Pass wristbands (online or in-person) at an additional cost to access the scare mazes. Express is also an option to bypass the general queue. These passes are separate from regular park admission.

Scare zones will be familiar from the clowns in City Under Siege, mariners at Devil’s Triangle, carnivHELL in Bugs Bunny World, cyberpunk zombies roaming in The Deadzone, TERRORtory Twisted towards Twisted Colossus, the walking undead on Exile Hill, and dark fairy tales in Nightmares: A Twisted Fantasy. They all vary in the number of actual actors you’ll be able to encounter. There are a couple of outdoor DJs spinning dance tunes as far as live shows go.

Unleashed sees the scare actors come out at opening hour in the DC Universe area of the park. A slider show also occurs later in the evening. Props designed around the 30th anniversary stand lonesome. By far the mazes with the longest waits are also some of the most recognizable horror movie franchises for today’s audience. New for the 2023 season are SAW X and The Conjuring.

The Conjuring commanded the longest wait through the whole evening. Expectations were high and met for many fans. You are welcomed into the Warrens home to view the paranormal collection. The Annabelle doll sits behind a locked case. Something is alive in this room and runs you down the hallway.

Did the painting on the wall just move? The bedroom is no longer safe. Try hiding in the closet. A priest attempts to ward away the evil presence. Victims get dragged across the floor by an invisible entity. Scared yet? The details in the set design take guests back to the world of The Conjuring.

SAW X was also high on the guest list. The flat facade with spiral symbols appears to be the hospital set outside Mexico City in the newest film. The first two empty rooms are dressed as such with a waiting room and medical equipment. The next several rooms are filled with victims in recognizable traps from the horror movie franchise. Billy the Puppet taunts, mannequins used for testing traps, the boiler glows red, swinging dead pigs, and bloody walls of inscriptions.

Pig-masked apprentices pop out from behind black curtains and then stroll back to their ready positions. The final two traps are more promotional scenery for the new movie. The victims acted out the pain of their entangled situations well, the actual scares need more menace and curiosity.

Aftermath 2: Chaos Rising has Ash City in a post-apocalyptic state from a deadly poison. Wander the crumbling downtown to avoid danger. Not even the hazmat area can keep you safe. The visuals of the fallen landscape will keep you in awe as the zombie herd closes in for the kill.

Truth or Dare casts you on the next episode of the popular game show. Wander backstage of the studio soundstage to auditions, wardrobe, electrical room, and props. Then face challenging dares with poisonous gas, water traps, insects, laser beams, tangled ropes, and even the dreaded cut of cancellation. This is a more fun and amusing theme that adds a twist to an innocent premise. A vast improvement from last year with more clearly defined immersive rooms strengthening the story division between backstage of a television studio and on-set game show tasks.

Willoughby’s Resurrected once again returns to the Victorian mansion filled with unholy spirits. A major mainstay to the Six Flags Fright Fest lineup, the detailed interiors and scare actors keep guests coming back. Stroll down the hallways with hanging portraits, eerie organs, ticking grandfather clocks, dim dens, flickering candles, horse-drawn carriages, and more. One of the best scares comes from a falsely safe ghostly projection only to be shaken by the pounding of a live actor.

Sewer of Souls takes you to the damp depths of the underground. Mole people reside beside the backlit glow of radioactive waste. Follow the pipes deeper past leaking oil barrels, and step on a bridge over dizzy heights.

Condemned: House Party is the frat house party that can’t be missed even for undead college students. Red plastic cups, a trashed home, an unkept kitchen, unmade beds… was the house like this before or after death? Anyways, a simple retheme of an otherwise long-time physical stable to Fright Fest actually changes the vibe just enough to warrant a revisit of the same layout of this scare maze. The party atmosphere lightens the mood a bit more akin to a dark comedy.

The physical layout of Vault 666: Unlocked is essentially the same as another horror movie theme that previously occupied this maze in 2018 with Hell Fest. The theme is changed to that of a cross between an oddity museum and an auction house for strange items open for bids.

Specialty food offerings for Fright Fest season can be found at various locations with cocktails, blood bags, funnel cakes, pudding, potatoes, fries, wings, mac and cheese, cheese balls, and more. Merchandise mostly focused on hoodies, shirts, drinkware, beanies, and photo frames.

As the season progresses and more guests come closer to Halloween, the actors will have a better sense and more play in their rooms. But in other cases, the veteran scare actors clearly jump right into it and bring on the frights. Newcomers will have plenty to chew while seasoned visitors will be attracted to new offerings with The Conjuring and SAW X as well as revisit new and old twists on returning mazes. The Villas at Disneyland Hotel features a variety of themed accommodations for families large and small including duo studios, deluxe studios, one- and two-bedroom villas, and multi-level grand villas. Each room celebrates the creativity of Disney films including “The Jungle Book,” “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Fantasia” and more.

The stunning, 12-story tower is the 16th Disney Vacation Club property and the first dedicated Disney Vacation Club property at Disneyland Resort since the Villas at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa opened in 2009. The property also marks the first new tower at the award-winning Disneyland Hotel since 1979.

The official opening was celebrated with a fun-filled ceremony highlighted by dedication remarks from Bill Diercksen and Dan Coleman, general manager of the Disneyland Hotel. The two were joined by Disney cast members and characters from the stories featured throughout the tower’s artwork such as Baloo and King Louie from “The Jungle Book,” Anna and Elsa from “Frozen,” and Princess Tiana from “The Princess and the Frog.” To close out the celebration, Disney on Broadway actress Kissy Simmons performed the new Disney Vacation Club anthem “Where We Belong (Welcome Home).”

Immersive Disney Storytelling: Step Inside The Villas at Disneyland Hotel

When entering the lobby, members and guests are greeted by a mural created exclusively for this property by beloved Disney Animation artist Lorelay Bové. Bové is known for her visual development work on Walt Disney Animation Studios films such as “The Princess and the Frog” and “Encanto.”

Walt Disney Imagineers have taken inspiration from the animators’ storytelling process to create distinctive accommodations that celebrate the magic of creativity. From color palettes based on animation stills to concept art, guests are instantly immersed in the storytelling process.

Perfect for two guests, the newly imagined duo studios are inspired by “The Jungle Book” featuring a split bathroom with themed tile accents and a queen-size bed that conveniently tucks into the wall to reveal a sofa when not in use.

With enough space for up to four guests, the deluxe studios celebrate the timeless tales of “Sleeping Beauty” or “The Princess and the Frog” and feature a kitchenette, split bathroom, and two queen-size beds to sleep up to four guests.

One- and two-bedroom villas offer roomier accommodations for larger families, sleeping up to five and nine guests, respectively. The villas include a full-size kitchen and living areas with comfortable sofa seating that can be easily pulled down to reveal a queen-size bed, complete with a story-themed mural inspired by “The Princess and the Frog” or “Fantasia.”

The comfort continues into the main bedroom, which includes a spacious en-suite bathroom featuring double vanities, a soaking tub with a themed mosaic-style tile mural, and a spa-like shower.

The three-bedroom grand villas feature multi-level accommodations for up to 12 guests. On the first floor, families can enjoy a full-size kitchen, a large dining area, and a double-sided fireplace connecting the living area to a private outdoor balcony. The first floor is also home to the primary suite inspired by “Bambi.” Guests will discover more magic as they venture up a spiral staircase to discover a full-size washer and dryer and two themed bedrooms. One bedroom is inspired by “Frozen” and one by “Moana,” each with two queen-size beds and en-suite bathrooms.

Making Magical Memories: Fun Activities for the Whole Family

The brand-new Palette Pool area offers an inviting oasis perfect for relaxation and play. Guests can unwind in the crystal-clear, palette-shaped swimming pool or enjoy refreshing snacks and drinks at the Palm Breeze Bar (opening later this season). This delightful outdoor space boasts decor inspired by the distinctive artistry of Disney Legend Mary Blair. Little ones can cool off at the whimsical “Steamboat Willie” splash pad inspired by the iconic short film. Kids can star in their own stories by joining the iconic Mickey Mouse at the helm of the boat brought to life with waterfalls, fountains, and misty fog effects.

Citizen Releases two new Disney100 Collection Watches

Citizen celebrates 100 years of Disney through an exploration of the Wonder of Time. The year-long tribute to the wonder of Disney will unfold with all-new Disney | Citizen watches, plus featured watches that mark each decade through the year. The latest watches released celebrate Disneyo’s 2000s era.

Featuring everyone’s favorite rat chef extraordinaire Remy, the new Pixar Ratatouille watch will transport you to the streets of Paris through a detailed illustration of Remy (by Disney artist extraordinaire Jeff Shelly) concocting his famous soup against a romantic skyline. The dial uses stylized features with fantastical curled numerals with the 7 o’clock hour marker illustrated as a noodle floating in Remy’s soup. Ticking atop the colorful illustration are three Parisian-inspired rose gold-tone hands indicating the hour, minute, and second. This colorful timepiece has three Parisian-inspired rose gold hands and is available now for $325.

Another mouse also steals our hearts with the all-new Disney Mickey Mouse Classic “Windswept” timepiece. In this gold-tone stainless steel design available for $375, the silver-white dial is the perfect backdrop for this crisp illustration of Mickey swept up in love with a bouquet of vibrant flowers. The crisp illustration is complemented by Roman numeral hour markers and three simple gold-tone hands. Again, Disney artist Jeff Shelley designed this charming piece to incorporate the modern look of Disney’s Mickey Mouse which debuted in the early 2000s TV show, Mickey Mouse Works, while still using touches of Mickey’s old-school design from the 1936 short “Thru the Mirror.”

His career with the Walt Disney Company brought him to Los Angeles, CA where he was Director of Character Art for Imagineering-Disney Parks, Experiences, and Consumer Products for 28 years. His work can be seen on product lines developed for Citizen, Coach, Apple, and Pottery Barn to name a few. He has worked for various animation studios and his illustrations can be seen in children’s books, magazines, educational publications, and advertising. Jeff works out of his studio in the Hollywood Hills illustrating, writing, and painting.
